In the wild, horses are prey (猎物) for many animals. To survive, they’ve developed a very strong sense of smell. That helps them find danger before other animals attack them.
Humans started riding horses more than 4,000 years ago. For a long time, people have believed that horses can “smell” people’s feelings, and riders should relax in order to keep their horses calm too. To check whether this is true, a team of researchers recently did a study.
First, the study invited 30 people to watch happy videos with special pads (软垫) under their arms to collect their sweat (汗). Then they watched a scary film while wearing new pads. Next, the researchers separated 43 horses into three groups. They made the horses wear masks to cover their noses and mouths. One group had masks with “happy sweat” pads, one group had “fear sweat” pads, and the third group had unused pads. The team then tested how the horses reacted (反应).
The differences were clear. The horses with “fear sweat” pads became scared more easily, and their hearts beat faster. They were also less curious about new objects and less willing to get close to people.
The researchers hope the study will help improve horses’ happiness and health, and also keep humans safe. Understanding horses better can help people live more positively with them.
42. Why do horses develop a strong sense of smell?
A. To guard their living places. B. To look for more food to eat.
C. To protect themselves from attacks. D. To communicate with other animals.
43. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Horses can “smell” people’s feelings. B. Horses are good at hunting in the wild.
C. Horses can understand people’s words. D. Humans started riding horses long ago.
44. How did the horses with “fear sweat” pads act?
A. They moved quickly and happily. B. They became calmer and friendlier.

A. It helps train horses to behave well. B. It tells people to avoid dangerous horses.
C. It lets people realize more values of horses. D. It helps people and horses get along better.
D
As a teacher from the US, when I arrived in China to teach, I didn’t expect to come home with so much tea. One student gave me tea that her parents mailed from Anhui, and another student handed me tea from her hometown in Henan. They didn’t do this for better grades. These were simply thanks from the bottom of their hearts.
Some of the most unforgettable moments during my stay in China happened with a teacup in my hand. In Chengdu, I joined two students for tea at Daci Temple. When they prepared the tea, they poured away the first round of tea. When I asked why, they said it was what their parents and grandparents did. For them, this habit was more about continuing a family tradition than about keeping clean or taste. In Beijing, a friend invited me to a traditional teahouse. Over a cup of tea, we chatted about life, family, travel and dreams. In this busy world, tea acts as a language of friendship and offers people a chance to slow down, talk face-to-face, and truly listen to each other.
In all these moments, I realized that tea is more than a drink in China. In the West, we usually see tea as something that gives us energy or helps us calm down. Yet in China, tea carries respect, history, and warmth.
46. Why did the two students pour away the first round of tea?
A. To make the tea cleaner. B. To improve the tea’s taste.
C. To follow a family tradition. D. To show respect for the writer.
47. How does the writer support his idea that “tea is more than a drink in China”?
A. By telling the history of tea in China. B. By describing his experiences with tea.
C. By listing the good effects of tea on health. D. By introducing different traditional teahouses.
48. What’s the main difference between tea in the West and in China?
A. The price of tea. B. The way of making tea.
C. The meanings behind tea. D. The time people drink tea.
E
Teenagers today are making a real difference to the world. Many are doing this through volunteering. They spend time and effort assisting others without being paid. But they get even more in return.
Through voluntary work teenagers can learn new skills, discover what jobs they might like, and develop a stronger sense of duty. Volunteering also gives teenagers the chance to make real friendships and connect with different kinds of people. In this way, they learn to get along with others.
Want to volunteer and make a difference? Before you jump in, here are a few things to think about.
First, be honest with yourself. Make sure you have the time and energy for the voluntary work you choose. If you don’t, you may not be able to give your best, and that’s not good for you or the people you’re trying to help. Also, know yourself by writing down your strengths and interests. For example, if you really love animals, you can volunteer at a shelter (庇护所).
Second, keep yourself safe by learning more about the organization. When you’re ready to start, you’ll probably search online for “volunteer chances for teenagers”. The Internet is truly a great way, but be careful with online information. You can ask your parents or teachers to help you judge.
Volunteering can be a life-changing experience for teenagers. If you’re considering it, start today!
49. What does the underlined word “assisting” most probably mean?
A. Visiting. B. Helping. C. Joining. D. Changing.
50. What’s paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The ways to make a difference.
B. Different types of voluntary work.
C. The good points of volunteering for teenagers.
D. Teenagers’ personal growth and job choices.
51. What does the writer think of volunteering?
A. It’s valuable, but teenagers should be careful.
B. It’s challenging, but older teenagers can do it.
C. It’s full of risks, and teenagers should do it wisely.
D. It’s good, and anyone can do it anytime, anywhere.
52. What could be the best title for the text?
A. How Teenagers Learn to Be Volunteers
B. Where Teenagers Do Volunteer Work
C. The Reasons to Do Volunteer Work for Teenagers
D. The Meaning of Volunteering for Teenagers
