A lot of people think their mothers’ food is the best in the world. A new study from the UK says this may be true for everyone.
“It is hard to say what the ‘best food’ is. But the study finds that people like food from their loved ones more than other food,” Charles Spence, head of the study, says. He is a scientist who does experiments (实验).
In the study, people wear blindfolds (眼罩). They cannot see. Everyone eats two cakes. Both cakes use the same recipe (配方). One cake is made by a restaurant cook and the other is made by someone they love, like their mothers.
Before the experiment starts, the scientists put heart rate monitors (心率监测器) on these people. They also watch their faces while they eat.
Every person picks the homemade cake as their favourite. Many have faster heartbeats (心跳) when they eat it. They smile a lot too.
These people answer questions about home cooking too. About 30% say their mothers’ food tastes the best. 90% say food is better when it is made by someone they love. 40% say cooking with a loved person makes them feel close.
Cooking is not just about taste. “It’s about the love and care that go into it,” Spence says. “That’s what people taste, and that’s what makes home food so special and meaningful.”

第一段第2句提到“A new study from the UK says this may be true for everyone.”,第二段Charles Spence解释说“people like food from their loved ones more than other food”。
原文第三段最后一句“One cake is made by a restaurant cook and the other is made by someone they love, like their mothers.”明确指出,一块蛋糕由餐厅厨师制作,另一块由“someone they love, like their mothers”制作。为了与前面的“a restaurant cook”对应,此处填someone they love/their mothers。
表格第四行左侧空白处,右侧内容列举了实验的具体观察结果,如第五段第2-3句“Many have faster heartbeats (心跳) when they eat it. They smile a lot too”,第六段第3句“90% say food is better when it is made by someone they love”。 因此,该栏目的标题应为Findings/Results。
原文第五段第1句提到“Every person picks the homemade cake as their favourite.”,意为每个人都选家常蛋糕作为最爱。此处需要一个副词修饰动词like,表示“最喜欢”或“最”,需填best/as their favourite。
最后一段第2-3句“It’s about the love and care that go into it...That’s what makes home food so special and meaningful.”

Elephants have amazing trunks. They can use their trunks to pick up food, find water, and spray (喷洒) water on their bodies to stay cool. The wrinkles (褶皱) on the trunks help them move easily.
But you know what? Just like some people are left-handed and some are right-handed, elephants can be “left-trunked” or “right-trunked”. You can tell (辨别) which kind of elephant it is by looking at the wrinkles on its trunk. The side (边) with more wrinkles is the side the elephant uses more.
Elephants often bend (使弯曲) their trunks to one side when eating. They pick up food and put it into their mouths this way. Over time, the side they use more gets more wrinkles, just like your hand gets stronger if you use it a lot.
About half of elephants are left-trunked and half are right-trunked. It’s a 50-50 chance (可能性). So, it’s no surprise that half of elephant trunks have more wrinkles on the right and half on the left.
So, next time you see elephants, look closely at their trunks. You can guess which is left-trunked and which is right-trunked by looking at their wrinkles. And remember, just like us, elephants have their own ways of doing things!
57. What do elephants use their trunks to do?
__________________________________________________________________________________________
58. How can you tell if an elephant is left-trunked or right-trunked?

For Manette, it is a new experience (经历). “When the plane door opens, it is a little scary,” she says. “But then I think, ‘I have no choice but to jump now.’ So I just jump!”
