Teen Saved Grandmother’s Life
On a cold afternoon, Ryan Long, a 14-year-old boy from New York, was at home with his 68-year-old grandmother Michelle. Suddenly Michelle felt very sick. She could hardly breathe and her face turned pale (苍白的). Before they could leave for the hospital, Michelle stopped breathing.
In an interview, nurse Linda later said that every time Ryan felt like he couldn’t do it, they encouraged him to keep going.
For nearly 10 minutes, Ryan kept doing chest compressions (胸外按压) on his grandmother. His arms ached and he felt very tired, but he didn’t give up. He remembered what the nurse told him and kept going. Finally, the ambulance (救护车) arrived and took his grandmother to the hospital.
The doctors said Ryan’s quick action saved his grandmother’s life. “If he hadn’t done CPR right away, she might not have made it,” one doctor explained.
Later, Ryan’s school gave him the “Eagle of Excellence Award” for his bravery. The hospital also named him a “Healthcare Hero.”

Positive thinking is a great way to manage stress and keep your body healthy. It doesn’t mean you ignore (忽略) the bad things in life, but face them in a positive way and believe the best will happen. It usually starts with self-talk (自我对话) — the unspoken thoughts in your head, which can be positive or negative. More positive self-talk makes you an optimist (乐观主义者), while more negative one makes you a pessimist (悲观主义者).
Positive thinking brings many health benefits. It may help you live longer and feel less sad, upset or painful. It also makes you better at fighting illnesses and keeps your heart healthy. Besides, it helps you deal with hard times and stress more easily. One reason is that positive people deal with stress better, and they often live healthier lives — they exercise more, eat well and don’t smoke or drink too much.
There are common kinds of negative self-talk, like only seeing the bad parts of things, blaming yourself for bad things, or expecting the worst to happen. Luckily, you can learn to turn negative thinking into positive thinking after a long-term practice.
★
◆ First, find the life areas you think negatively about, like work or relationships, and start small by changing one area. Check your thoughts regularly during the day. If they are negative, try to look on the bright side.
◆ Be open to humor and allow yourself to smile or laugh, even when things are hard, as laughter can reduce stress.
◆ Keep a healthy lifestyle: do 30 minutes of exercise every day, eat healthy food, and get enough sleep.
◆ Surround yourself with positive and supportive people because negative people will add to your stress.
◆ Most importantly, practice positive self-talk: speak to yourself as kindly as you speak to others, and focus on the things you are thankful for in life.
Positive thinking is a new habit to build. With daily practice, you’ll be more optimistic and better at handling stress in life.
27. What can we learn about positive thinking from the first two paragraphs?

B. It starts with self-talk and can help us manage stress.

D. It makes people become pessimists with more negative thinking.
8. Which of the following is the best title for “★”?
A. Ways to develop positive thinking
B. Kinds of positive self-talk in life
C. Health benefits of positive thinking
D. Differences between optimism and pessimism
29. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Practicing positive self-talk is the least important thing to do.
B. Staying with negative people can help us keep a positive mind.
C. People can have positive thinking by practicing it very often.
D. People can turn negative thinking into positive one at once.

AI has become a part of children’s daily life. Ying Xu, a very famous professor, has studied how AI affects (影响) children’s study and social skills. Her research shows that if AI can follow scientific learning rules, it can help children learn well. She says that learning with AI partners can help kids understand better and learn more words. In some cases, the learning effect is even as good as learning with people, and it greatly broadens children’s ways to get knowledge and helps them learn better.
But Xu emphasizes (强调) that AI can never take the place of communicating with people. “AI can’t really copy the special good things of real talks with other people,” she says. Different from real communication with humans, AI doesn’t have true care for others and can’t talk with kids in the way kids want. When children talk to people, they are more willing to share their ideas and ask more questions. These things are very important for their language and social development, and AI still can’t make up for this weakness now.
AI also brings possible dangers to children’s growth. as Xu points out. Children may forget to be polite when they order AI, and such speaking habits may affect their real-life communication. If they rely (依赖) too much on AI for homework answers, they may stop thinking by themselves and miss the “useful hard work” that is the key to learning deeply. She also raises a big worry: “Perhaps children would like to be with AI more than with the people around them.”
Facing these problems, Xu stresses that learning about AI is necessary for children, even the preschool (学前) kids. Her research has proved (证明) that young kids can be taught to understand AI. This helps them see AI limits, not believe all the information AI gives blindly.
Cultivating (培养) kids who grow up with AI needs everyone’s efforts, Xu believes. Teachers should teach children knowledge about AI and skills to judge information carefully, while AI makers need to make products for kids, adding tips to make them think and functions to guide them to be polite. Only in this way can we let AI help children learn better and keep the human connections that help children grow healthily.
30. What does the underlined word “broaden” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Avoid. B. Add. C. Describe. D. Show.
31. What can we learn according to the passage?
A. Young preschool kids can learn to understand AI.
B. AI makes kids develop their polite speaking habits.
C. Relying on AI is always good for kids’ deep learning.
D. AI can copy the whole good things of real human talks.
32. What does Ying Xu think of AI for children’s growth?
A. AI is useless and it’s not necessary to design AI for kids.
B. AI is so good that children should use it as often as possible.
C. AI is harmful so that parents should stop children from using it.
D. AI is helpful but it can’t replace the important human connections.
33. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell people how AI changes young children.
B. To ask parents to stop children from using AI tools.
C. To call on people to work together to make AI better for kids.
D. To let people know how to make different AI products for kids.

When students at a primary school in Sichuan heard they would enjoy their first spring break in early April and with no homework to worry about, they cheered loudly with great joy.
The idea of spring and autumn breaks for schools first emerged (出现) in Hangzhou. As early as 2004, the city took the lead in spring and autumn breaks.
Spring break schedules are different in the whole China this year: the break usually lasts two or three days, but falls at different times. In some areas, such as Deyang, the break comes just before the three-day Qingming Festival in early
April, while in others it extends (延伸) into the May Day holiday or is combined with weekends, resulting in a break of five to eight days.
The new vacation is very popular. Data (数据) from Chengdu East Railway Station show that it handled 336,000 passenger trips on April 1, the first day of the city’s spring break. On the same day, children from six to 14 accounted for (占) 50 percent of passengers on trains departing (出发) Chengdu for Beijing.
The new vacation not only creates a window for family travel, but also allows children to connect with nature in spring and reduces students’ stress. Ma Xingzhi, a primary school student in Chengdu, traveled to Wuzhen, a water town in East China’s Zhejiang province, with his parents. “I didn’t realize until I got here that the houses in Wuzhen were built over the water,” Ma said. “I felt especially happy over my first spring break. It was fantastic!”
Different spring-themed (春天主题的) activities are organized to offer visitors a fresh taste of the season, such as digging and cooking bamboo shoots at a Sichuan bamboo forest resort, or hiking among tea plants at Mengding Mountain to experience tea tradition. Governments hope that these colorful activities can meet different needs of students and their families.
34. Which city took the lead in spring and autumn breaks?
35. How long does spring break usually last?
36. How did Ma Xingzhi feel about his first spring break?
37. What kind of spring-themed activities would you like to choose for your next spring break? Why? (Give at least two reasons.)
