Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect. On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about. Even if my electricity was cut off, I still woke up at 5:30, because I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me. Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths couldn’t bring me closer to my goal. Being poor could not take away my power to decide what I chose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to send emails to about 50 Harvard students to ask for feedback on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SAT when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when 180 others had already turned me down. Every day, I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!” A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land. Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow? 11. He spent more time preparing for the exams. D. He turned to his teacher when facing problems. 13. Which words can best describe the author’s character? A. Determined and diligent. B. Generous and selfless. C. Courageous and friendly. D. Intelligent and humorous. B After South American cane toads (甘蔗蟾蜍) were introduced to Australia in the 1930s to control pests (害虫), they damaged the country’s ecosystems — and their disturbance continues today. These animals release poison from their skin, killing pets and other animals that eat them. The yellow-spotted monitor, a big lizard (蜥蜴) found mainly in Australia, has been especially hard-hit; populations have declined by more than 90 percent in most areas where cane toads invaded (侵扰), with chain effects on the entire ecosystems. Now, to address the problem, scientists are experimenting with a surprising way to keep the lizards from eating the toads. For a study in Conservation Letters, researchers tested an idea: releasing cane toad eggs and youngsters in areas where monitors are present and adult toads are about to invade. Previous research had shown that monitors are only sickened — not killed — when they eat young cane toads, and that they therefore have a chance to learn to avoid the more poisonous adults in future encounters. For the new work, the researchers first identified seven areas in Australia’s Kimberley region that would soon be overrun by cane toads. They then released a total of about 200,000 eggs and young cane toads across three of the seven sites during two years’ wet seasons. The study found that monitor populations exposed to the young “teacher toads” often survived the adults’ invasion. In completely unexposed areas, however, the lizards virtually disappeared after the big toads showed up. “It’s a management strategy that’s now being adopted by wildlife management agencies based on our study,” says Georgia Ward-Fear, lead author of the study. “This research provides much hope for reducing the impacts of invasive species on native biodiversity,” says Jodi Rowley, a conservation biologist who wasn’t involved in the study. She adds, however, that although this approach is “extremely exciting,” each invasive species is likely to interact with its surroundings in different ways, and specific research is needed to find effective methods for protecting other animals and ecosystems. 14. How can the effects of introducing cane toads to Australia be described? A. Unexpected. B. Satisfying. C. Temporary. D. Insignificant. 15. What can we infer about cane toads? A. They use poison to hunt. B. Adults travel far to lay eggs. C. They are more active during wet seasons. D. Youngsters pose less of a threat than adults. 16. What can we say about the researchers’ experiment? A. It confirmed their assumptions. B. It changed their research goals. C. It disagreed with previous research. D. It inspired research on invasive species. 17. What is Jodi Rowley’s attitude to the new method? A. Unclear. B. Indifferent. C. Approving. D. Objective. C In the early hours of March 13,1964,Kitty Genovese was attacked violently near her New York apartment despite neighbors hearing her screams. The case made headlines in The New York Times, which reported that 38 witnesses heard the attack but took no action. To figure out the reason, social psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latané conducted two classic experiments. Their first experiment showed that the more bystanders there were, the more an individual’s sense of responsibility diffused — 85% of participants helped in a one-on-one situation, while only 31%did so in a group of six. In their second smoke experiment, 75% of people alone sought help when smoke filled the room, but just 10% did so with passive bystanders around. They pointed out that the bystander effect mainly springs from people’s failure to interpret a situation as an emergency due to others’ inaction. The second reason for the bystander effect is that when multiple bystanders are present, each person feels less personal commitment to act, as they assume others (especially those with professional skills like doctors or police) will intervene. This phenomenon is more common in urban areas with many strangers, unlike in small communities where people feel a clear sense of responsibility to help others they know. Recent research has cast doubt on the universality of Darley and Latané’s classic bystander effect theory. Using real-world CCTV footage from three pairs of culturally diverse cities — Lancaster, Amsterdam, and Cape Town — Dr, Richard Philpot of Lancaster University and his team analyzed 212 violent incidents. Their findings showed that bystanders intervened in 91% of cases, and in direct contradiction to the original theory, the presence of more bystanders actually increased the likelihood of intervention, with multiple people often stepping in together. The consistent types of intervention across different cities suggest we are born with the wish to help others, driven by social conventions and a desire to understand, protect, and assist others. 18. What does the underlined word “diffused” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Weakened. B. Shifted. C. Continued. D. Increased. 19. The bystander effect occurs primarily because people _________. A. are unwilling to help strangers B. are influenced by urbanization C. are discouraged by professionals D. are unable to recognize an emergency 20. Which statement does Philpot probably agree with? A. Protecting others should be advocated. B. Bystander responses rely on intervention types. C. The tendency to help is rooted in human nature. D. Cultural differences lead to the bystander effect. 21. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Cold Shoulder B. The Blind Eye C. A Willing Heart D. A Still Tongue Going green while travelling is an effective way to protect the Earth’s natural and cultural resources. As a delivery rider, he had just finished a few smooth orders, his hands warm from the hot milk tea cups he’d been carrying, and his spirits fairly good. Stepping out of a milk tea shop, he found the spot where his second-hand electric bike had been parked now empty. In an instant, his heart sank, and a wave of hopelessness swept over him, turning his calm evening into a nightmare. That bike was far more than just a vehicle; it was his lifeline, the only way for him to earn daily income and cover his living expenses. Panic set in as he remembered the undelivered orders — especially a cup of hot milk tea for Ms. White, a regular customer. His hand trembled as he pressed the voice button, his words laced with sorrow and anxiety as he apologized repeatedly, offering to pay for the undelivered drink. To his great surprise, Ms. White did not respond with anger or complaint, but with gentle kindness. Ms. White told him not to worry and to take his time finding his bike. Her understanding words calmed him, but also deepened his sense of responsibility. “She is so kind. I cannot let her down,” he thought. For nearly two hours, he searched every nearby street, but there was no sign of his bike. As night grew darker and the wind bit harder, Jack clenched his fists and made a firm decision. He took out his poor savings, bought a bag of fresh apples and a new cup of hot milk tea, then set off on foot to Ms. White’s apartment, several kilometers away. The wind bit into his thin jacket, and his old shoes grew heavy with mud, but the thought of keeping his promise and maintaining his integrity kept him moving forward through the dimly lit urban landscape. Finally, breathless, Jack reached Ms. White’s doorstep and rang the bell. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Deeply moved by Jack’s action, Ms. White decided to share the story online that night. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025~2026学年度第二学期期中考试 高二英语 说明:本试题共四大题,满分150分,考试用时120分钟 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分20分) 第一节 听力理解(共5小题,每题2分,满分10分) 每段播放两遍。 1. 11. C. Approving. D. Objective. A 15. D 16. A 17. 根据第一段“After South American cane toads (甘蔗蟾蜍) were introduced to Australia in the 1930s to control pests (害虫), they damaged the country’s ecosystems — and their disturbance continues today.(20世纪30年代,为了控制害虫,南美洲的甘蔗蟾蜍被引入澳大利亚,它们破坏了该国的生态系统——它们的干扰一直持续到今天)”可知,甘蔗蟾蜍引入澳大利亚的影响是意想不到的。故选A。 根据第二段“Previous research had shown that monitors are only sickened — not killed — when they eat young cane toads, and that they therefore have a chance to learn to avoid the more poisonous adults in future encounters.(先前的研究表明,当它们吃小蔗蜍时,它们只会生病,而不会被杀死,因此它们有机会学会在未来遇到更有毒的成年蔗蜍时避开它们)”可知,蜥蜴吃幼年蟾蜍只会生病而非死亡,从而学会避开毒性更强的成年蟾蜍。 根据第二段“For a study in Conservation Letters, researchers tested an idea: releasing cane toad eggs and youngsters in areas where monitors are present and adult toads are about to invade.(在《保护快报》上的一项研究中,研究人员测试了一个想法:在有监视器和成年蟾蜍即将入侵的地区释放蔗蜍卵和幼崽)”以及倒数第二段“The study found that monitor populations exposed to the young “teacher toads” often survived the adults’ invasion. In completely unexposed areas, however, the lizards virtually disappeared after the big toads showed up.(研究发现,接触到年轻“老师蟾蜍”的监测种群通常在成年蟾蜍的入侵中幸存下来。然而,在完全未暴露的地区,大蟾蜍出现后,蜥蜴几乎消失了)”可知,研究人员的实验证实了他们的假设。故选A。 根据最后一段““This research provides much hope for reducing the impacts of invasive species on native biodiversity,” says Jodi Rowley, a conservation biologist who wasn’t involved in the study. She adds, however, that although this approach is “extremely exciting,” each invasive species is likely to interact with its surroundings in different ways, and specific research is needed to find effective methods for protecting other animals and ecosystems.(“这项研究为减少入侵物种对本地生物多样性的影响提供了很大的希望,”Jodi Rowley说,他是一位没有参与这项研究的保护生物学家。然而,她补充说,尽管这种方法“非常令人兴奋”,但每种入侵物种都可能以不同的方式与周围环境相互作用,需要专门的研究来找到保护其他动物和生态系统的有效方法)”可知,Jodi Rowley提到了新方法的好处以及存在的问题,说明对新方法的态度是客观的。故选D。 C In the early hours of March 13,1964,Kitty Genovese was attacked violently near her New York apartment despite neighbors hearing her screams. A Still Tongue 【答案】18. A 19. D 20. C 21. 根据第二段中的“Their first experiment showed that the more bystanders there were, the more an individual’s sense of responsibility diffused — 85% of participants helped in a one-on-one situation, while only 31%did so in a group of six.(他们的第一个实验表明,旁观者越多,个人的责任感就越分散diffused——一对一情境下有85%的参与者会提供帮助,而六人小组中仅有31%的人会这样做。)” 故选A项。 根据第三段中的“They pointed out that the bystander effect mainly springs from people’s failure to interpret a situation as an emergency due to others’ inaction.(他们指出,旁观者效应主要源于人们因他人的不作为而无法将当下情况判定为紧急事件。)” 根据最后一段中的“The consistent types of intervention across different cities suggest we are born with the wish to help others, driven by social conventions and a desire to understand, protect, and assist others.(不同城市中一致的干预行为表明,我们天生就拥有帮助他人的意愿,这受社会习俗以及理解、保护和帮助他人的渴望所驱动。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Kitty Genovese was attacked violently near her New York apartment despite neighbors hearing her screams. The case made headlines in The New York Times, which reported that 38 witnesses heard the attack but took no action.(基蒂·吉诺维斯在纽约公寓附近遭到暴力袭击,尽管邻居们听到了她的尖叫。这起案件登上了《纽约时报》头条,报道称有38名目击者听到了袭击却没有采取任何行动。)”以及后文对旁观者效应的阐释,文章核心围绕人们面对紧急事件视而不见、不予干预的现象展开,因此“The Blind Eye(视而不见)”最适合作为文章标题。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Going green while travelling is an effective way to protect the Earth’s natural and cultural resources. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Finally, breathless, Jack reached Ms. White’s doorstep and rang the bell. The door opened, revealing a woman whose expression shifted from curiosity to surprise and then to heartfelt sympathy as she saw the exhausted man before her. His clothes were dusty, but the gifts in his hands were held with care. “Ms. White, these are for you,” he grinned, offering the apples and milk tea. “Wishing you happiness and good health. I am truly sorry about the delay.” Tears welled up in Ms. White’s eyes. “Oh, Jack! You shouldn’t have walked such a long way just for this!” she said, her voice soft with emotion for his unshakable honesty, even amid his own misfortune! Deeply moved by Jack’s action, Ms. White decided to share the story online that night. She posted a video describing what happened, writing, “Even when caught in his own storm, he still reached out to warm others.” The post quickly went viral, receiving millions of likes and shares. Strangers were touched by the ordinary man’s extraordinary act. The wave of kindness soon reached his delivery company. They promptly responded, providing Jack with a brand-new e-bike and a cash reward to support his honest work. Even more wonderfully, with the help of numerous alert eyes online, his original bike was located and returned. 词汇激活 行为类 ①展示:reveal/show/display ②走红:go viral/spread widely/become popular ③定位,找到:locate/find/discover/track down 情绪类 ①由衷的同情:heartfelt sympathy/sincere concern/genuine pity ②疲惫不堪的:exhausted/tired out/worn-out/fatigued 【点睛】[高分句型1] The door opened, revealing a woman whose expression shifted from curiosity to surprise and then to heartfelt sympathy as she saw the exhausted man before her. (运用了现在分词revealing作状语,whose引导的定语从句和as引导的时间状语从句) [高分句型2] Even when caught in his own storm, he still reached out to warm others.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句的省略) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
