Every one of you knows that the rate of change slows over the human life, that the children seem to change by the minute, but parents seem to change by the year. But what is the name of this magical point in life is IT teenagers is IT middle age IT. Turns out for most people is now whatever now happens to be. So here's a study of change in people's personal values over time. There are three values, pleasure, success and honesty. Well, we asked thousands of people about how much their values would change in the next ten years and have changed in the last ten years. Here's what we found. Change does slow down as we age, but IT doesn't slow nearly as much as we think at every age from eighteen to sixty eight, people are wrong with how much change they would experience over the next ten years. Why does this happen? It's probably because most of us can remember who we were ten years ago, but we find IT hard to imagine who we are going to be. And then we mistakenly think that because it's hard to imagine, it's not likely to happen. Time is a powerful force for most of us. The present is a magic time. It's the moment at which we finally become ourselves. Thank you. Man: I wonder why the office is still not open. It is also difficult to find water in the Sahara. In 2006, Kevin Lin, Ray Zahab and Charlie Engle decided to do something very difficult. They made the decision to run across the Sahara Desert 4,300 miles (6,920 km). It seemed impossible to do, but they wanted to try. The three men liked to test themselves, and this would be a very big test. On the morning of November 2, Kevin, Ray and Charlie started their trip across the Sahara. Every morning they began running at 5:00. At 11 a.m. they stopped and rested until 5 p.m. Then they ran again until 9:30 in the evening. Each day they ran about 40 miles (64 km). B One of the most common types of nonfiction, and one that many people enjoy reading, is stories about people’s lives. These stories fall into three general categories: autobiography, memoir, and biography. An autobiography is the story of a person’s life written by himself or herself. Often it begins with the person’s earliest recollections and ends in the present. Autobiography writers may not be entirely objective in the way they present themselves. However, they offer the reader a good look at the way they are and what makes them that way. People as diverse as Benjamin Franklin and Helen Keller have written autobiographies. Other writers, such as James Joyce, have written thinly fictionalized accounts of their lives. These are not autobiographies, but they are very close to it. Memoirs, strictly speaking, are autobiographical accounts that focus as much on the events of the times as on the life of the author: Memoir writers typically use these events as backgrounds for their lives. They describe them in detail and discuss their importance. Recently, though, the term memoir seems to be becoming interchangeable with autobiography. A memoir nowadays may or may not deal with the outside world. Biographies are factual accounts of someone else’s life. In many senses, these may be the hardest of the three types to write. Autobiography writers know the events they write about because they lived them. But biography writers have to gather information from as many different sources as possible. Then they have to decide which facts to include. Their goal is to present a balanced picture of a person, not one that is overly positive or too critical. A fair well-presented biography may take years to research and write. 55. This passage is mostly about . A. the characteristics of autobiographies, memoirs and biographies B. famous autobiographies C. why biography can be difficult to write D. differences between autobiographies and memoirs 56. Helen Keller wrote A. a memoir B. an autobiography C. a work of fiction D. a biography 57. The word “diverse” in Paragraph 2 means . A. able to swim in deep water B. similar or alike C. varied or different D. enjoying poetry 58. Autobiography writers are not always objective because they . A. feel they have to make up details to make their books sell B. constantly compete with biography writers C. want to present themselves in a good light D. have trouble remembering the good times C The story of Cleopatra, a beautiful 17-year-old girl when she became the powerful ruler of ancient Egypt, has interested people for thousands of years. Now new information about Cleopatra’s life is coming to the surface. Parts of her ancient royal court have been found near Alexandria, Egypt. All of these ruins are underwater. Ancient Egyptian writings and drawings show that Cleopatra owned a royal (王室的) palace on an island named Antirhodos. The island was near Alexandria, the capital city of Egypt during Cleopatra’s rule in the first century B.C. Although the city of Alexandria still exists today, floods and earthquakes buried Antirhodos under water more than 1,600 years ago. But it wasn’t lost for good. In 1996, undersea explorer Franck Goddio found it beneath just 18 feet of water, off the shore of Alexandria. He found the ruins of Cleopatra’s palace in mud, seaweed, and garbage. Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII began to rule Egypt together in 51 B.C. But Ptolemy did not want to share the power, and he forced Cleopatra out of the palace. The clever young woman saw her chance to regain power when Rome’s main leader, Julius Caesar, traveled to Egypt. In order to meet with him, Cleopatra is said to have sneaked (潜行) into the palace rolled up in a carpet! Caesar soon fell in love with Cleopatra. He helped her push Ptolemy aside and take control of Egypt. After Caesar was murdered by his enemies, a new Roman leader, Mark Antony, met Cleopatra. Just like Caesar, Antony fell in love with her. He moved into Cleopatra’s palace at Antirhodos. Soon people back in Rome feared that Antony was more interested in Egypt than in his own empire. They turned against him and Egypt and sent a huge army by sea, which eventually defeated Egypt. In despair, Cleopatra and Antony took their own lives. Ancient Egypt’s last queen died at the age of 39. 59. How did Cleopatra’s life catch people’s attention again? A. Through ancient Egyptian writings and drawings B. Through the finding of the underwater city. C. Through the recent floods in Alexandria. D. Through the retelling of old stories 60. What does “it”(underlined in paragraph 3) refer to? A. Egypt. B. Alexandria. C. Antirhodos. D. Ptolemy XIII. 61. Who helped Cleopatra regain power after Ptolemy XIII forced her away? A. Franck Goddio. B. People in Egypt. C. Mark Antony. D. Julius Caesar. 62. Which of the following words best describes Cleopatra in the passage? A. Warm-hearted. B. Cruel. C. Quick-minded. D. Selfless. D In a world where we are tweeting, texting, Googling and checking e-mail all the time, technology addiction (沉迷) is a real concern for today’s kids. Yet parents are often unable to unplug from their own digital devices, research suggests. A recent national survey conducted by Common Sense Media, which included nearly 1,800 parents of children aged eight to 18, found that parents spend an average of nine hours and 22 minutes every day in front of various screens — including smartphones, tablets, computers and televisions. Of those, nearly eight hours are for personal use, not work. Perhaps even more surprising is that 78 percent of parents surveyed believe they are good role models for how to use digital technology. Multimedia are designed to be engaging and habit-forming, so we do not even realize how much time we spend when we warn people against the overuse of our devices, says Catherine Steiner-Adair, a clinical psychologist and author of The Big Disconnect. This can be bad news for children, who not only feel that their parents are not caring for them or do not find them as engaging as the screen but who also learn to follow their parents’ behavior, Steiner-Adair notes. Studies show that greater use of technology among teens results in a preference for digital time over physical activity and worse performance in school. Babies also have a harder time learning emotional (情感的) and nonverbal cues because their parents always have what is called “still face phenomenon” from concentrating on mobile devices. The good news, however, is that if parents use screen time for shared activities with a child watching a movie or playing an educational game together, for example — it can enhance the child's learning. According to the survey, 94 percent of parents recognize that technology can be used to support their children’s education. The key is to limit and track kids’ time with technology and set rules for themselves, too. Modeling healthy media habits can start with something as simple as making the family dinner table a device-free zone. 63. Why do parents spend so much time every day on digital devices? A. They have to use them for work. B. They just follow the national rules. C. They’ve just got the habit to do so. D. They like using them with their kids. 64. What can we infer about Catherine Steiner-Adair’s feeling from her words? A. Surprised. B. Worried. C. Scared. D. Excited. 65. How are small babies affected according to paragraph 3? A. They are likely to move less. B. They tend to make faces more. C. They’ll be slow in expressing feelings. D. They won’t see their parents clearly. 66. What does “the good news” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Dinner tables can always be device-free. B. Kids can use digital devices to play games. C. Parents can make good use of digital devices for kids. D. There are rules to guide kids how to use digital devices. Fast-forward to the present, and the economy has not fully recovered. Thus, it’s of vital importance for job seekers to carefully strategize their approach to job application. And it is especially important for those new to the workforce. They should look at making themselves as attractive as possible to employers. For young people, information technology skills will play an increasing role in the future. As the generation to have grown up in the Information Age, they are quite confident when it comes to showing off their interests and skills in this field. This makes them a natural fit for companies seeking expertise in technology, marketing, and networking. They should emphasize these skills when applying for jobs that require the ability to multitask. Another attractive quality is experience. It is important that an applicant’s resume list any activities that involved teamwork and goal-driven responsibilities. Membership in a sports or social club and participation as a volunteer are good examples of this. These activities involve goal management and planning, along with the ability to focus while competing on a team. When hiring committees see this, they see a candidate who is capable of working in a variety of environments. Finally, an attractive quality when job-hunting is a great attitude toward a potential job. Young job seekers are known to be overconfident because they have been praised for everything they have done. But they must realize that the employment market is about how an employee will be a good fit for a company, not the other way around. Changes in people. B. Changes in life. C. The force of time. D. Memories about time. 19. What does the speaker consider as the magic point in life for most people? A. Teenager years. B. Middle ages. C. The future. D. The present. 20. What does the speaker think as difficult? A. Clear memories about the past. B. Imagination about future. C. Realization of mistakes. D. The development of brain power. C 19. D 20. Why do we make decisions that our future selves so often regret? Now, I think one of the reasons is that we have a wrong idea about the power of time. Every one of you knows that the rate of change slows over the human life. That the children seem to change by the minute, but parents seem to change by the year. But what is the name of this magical point in life? Is it teenage years? Is it middle age? It turns out for most people, is now wherever now happens to be? So here is a study of change in people’s personal values over time. There are three values: pleasure, success and honesty. Well, we asked thousands of people about how much their values would change in the next 10 years and had changed in the last 10 years. Here’s what we found. Change does slow down as we age. But it doesn’t slow nearly as much as we think. At every age from 18 to 68 people are wrong with how much change they would experience over the next 10 years. Why does this happen? It’s probably because most of us can remember who we were 10 years ago, but we find it hard to imagine who we’re going to be. And then we mistakenly think that because it’s hard to imagine, it’s not likely to happen. Time is a powerful force. For most of us, the present is a magic time. It’s the moment at which we finally become ourselves. Thank you. It stretches across Africa from Senegal to Egypt. The Sahara Desert is an unfriendly environment. During the day it’s very hot, and at night it’s sometimes very cold. Every day it was the same thing. They got up and ran. They listened to music on their iPods, and they ran and ran. Kevin Ray and Charlie needed to eat a lot of food during their trip. Most people need about 2,000 calories of food each day. Kevin, Ray and Charlie needed between 6,000 and 9,000 calories every day. That’s a lot of food! They also needed to drink a lot of water. The three men had some problems on their trip, and many times they wanted to quit and go home. It was often very hot (140°F/60℃) during the day, and the heat made them sick. Their legs and feet hurt. Sometimes it was very windy, and they couldn’t see. One time they got lost. But they didn’t quit. After 111 days, Kevin, Ray and Charlie successfully finished their trip across the Sahara Desert. They hugged each other and put their hands in the water of the Red Sea. Then they ran to a hotel to take a long shower. 51. The Sahara Desert is not fit for people to live because of its . A. feel they have to make up details to make their books sell B. constantly compete with biography writers C. want to present themselves in a good light D. have trouble remembering the good times 【答案】55. A 56. B 57. C 58. 根据第一段中的“These stories fall into three general categories: autobiography, memoir, and biography.(这些故事大致分为三类:自传、回忆录和传记。)” 根据第二段中的“People as diverse as Benjamin Franklin and Helen Keller have written autobiographies.(像本杰明·富兰克林和海伦·凯勒这样不同的人都写过自传。)” 根据第二段中的“People as diverse as Benjamin Franklin and Helen Keller have written autobiographies.(像本杰明·富兰克林和海伦·凯勒这样diverse人都写过自传。)” 根据第二段中的“Autobiography writers may not be entirely objective in the way they present themselves. However, they offer the reader a good look at the way they are and what makes them that way.(自传作者在描述自己时可能并不完全客观。 C The story of Cleopatra, a beautiful 17-year-old girl when she became the powerful ruler of ancient Egypt, has interested people for thousands of years. D. Selfless. B 60. C 61. D 62. 根据第一段中的“Now new information about Cleopatra's life is coming to the surface. Parts of her ancient royal court have been found near Alexandria, Egypt. All of these ruins are underwater.(现在,关于克利奥帕特拉生平的新信息正在浮出水面。 根据第三段中的“Although the city of Alexandria still exists today, floods and earthquakes buried Antirhodos under water more than 1,600 years ago. But it wasn’t lost for good.(尽管亚历山大城如今依然存在,但1600多年前,洪水和地震将安提罗多斯岛埋在了水下。 根据第四段中的“But Ptolemy did not want to share the power, and he forced Cleopatra out of the palace. The clever young woman saw her chance to regain power when Rome’s main leader, Julius Caesar, traveled to Egypt. In order to meet with him, Cleopatra is said to have sneaked (潘行) into the palace rolled up in a carpet! Caesar soon fell in love with Cleopatra. He helped her push Ptolemy aside and take control of Egypt.(但托勒密不希望分享权力,他将克利奥帕特拉赶出了宫殿。 根据第四段中的“The clever young woman saw her chance to regain power when Rome's main leader, Julius Caesar, traveled to Egypt. In order to meet with him, Cleopatra is said to have sneaked into the palace rolled up in a carpet!(当罗马的主要领袖尤利乌斯·凯撒来到埃及时,这位聪明的年轻女子看到了重新掌权的机会。 D In a world where we are tweeting, texting, Googling and checking e-mail all the time, technology addiction (沉迷) is a real concern for today’s kids. C 64. B 65. C 66. 根据第二段中“Multimedia are designed to be engaging and habit-forming, so we do not even realize how much time we spend when we warn people against the overuse of our devices, says Catherine Steiner-Adair, a clinical psychologist and author of The Big Disconnect.(临床心理学家、《大脱节》一书的作者Catherine Steiner-Adair说,多媒体的设计就是为了吸引人并让人养成习惯,所以当我们警告人们不要过度使用设备时,我们甚至没有意识到自己花了多少时间)”可知,家长之所以每天在数字设备上花费大量时间,是因为他们已经养成了这样的习惯。 根据第二段中“Multimedia are designed to be engaging and habit-forming, so we do not even realize how much time we spend when we warn people against the overuse of our devices, says Catherine Steiner-Adair, a clinical psychologist and author of The Big Disconnect. (临床心理学家、《大脱节》一书的作者Catherine Steiner-Adair说,多媒体的设计就是为了吸引人并让人养成习惯,所以当我们警告人们不要过度使用设备时,我们甚至没有意识到自己花了多少时间)”以及第三段中“This can be bad news for children, who not only feel that their parents are not caring for them or do not find them as engaging as the screen but who also learn to follow their parents’ behavior, Steiner-Adair notes. 根据第三段中“Babies also have a harder time learning emotional (情感的) and nonverbal cues because their parents always have what is called “still face phenomenon” from concentrating on mobile devices. 根据最后一段中“The good news, however, is that if parents use screen time for shared activities with a child watching a movie or playing an educational game together, for example — it can enhance the child's learning.(然而,好消息是,如果父母利用屏幕时间与孩子一起进行共享活动,比如一起看电影或玩教育游戏,这可以促进孩子的学习)”以及“According to the survey, 94 percent of parents recognize that technology can be used to support their children's education. yourself cost learn order work pay nobody inform settle pick willing everybody A friend’s grandfather came to America from Eastern Europe. In fact, in an interview, an important question to ask is: “What would be expected of me as an employee?” In today’s tough job market, young job seekers need to provide a potential employer with good reasons to hire them. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考答案 How can young people attract their future employers?
