Dear Mathew,
I’m glad to hear you’re planning a trip during the May Day holiday. I strongly recommend Chengdu, a charming city in southwest China.
Chengdu is home to cute giant pandas, and you can get up close to them at the Panda Base. Besides, Chengdu has delicious Sichuan food like hot pot, which is a must-try. For your trip, book your hotel and tickets in advance as it’s a peak travel season. Also, learn some simple Chinese phrases to make communication easier.
Hope you have a wonderful time!
Yours,
Li Hua

【参考范文】
Josh stood and asked if the man was searching for something. The man rushed over, explaining it was his workers’ payroll — eight hundred dollars. When Josh held out the envelope, the man collapsed in relief, and then he looked at the boy in wonder. Noticing Josh’s worn-out bicycle and thin coat, he insisted on driving him home. Although Josh politely refused, the man was firm because he was unwilling to let this honest child ride through the darkness and cold. During the short ride, Eason learned about the family’s struggles.
The next morning, Eason visited Josh’s house with a brand-new bicycle. He told Josh’s parents how their son’s honesty had saved his workers and his business. Josh’s mother wiped her tears while his father stood tall. Eason explained that this gift wasn’t out of pity, but out of respect for their values. Greatly moved, they finally accepted the gift. Eason also offered Josh’s father a stable job at his factory. This simple act would put an end to their rent worries, proving that honesty, even in poverty, sows the seeds of change.

At 67, Joyce Faulkner thought she was looking for a holiday. Her husband, Jim, had recently died and exploring possible house swaps on the Home Exchange website felt less painful. In the end, it was not a vacation Faulkner found but a job. She left her home in Edinburgh to become mother’s help to seven-year-old twins in Varese, Italy.
“It’s halfway crazy,” she says. A house swap she was interested in didn’t work out, but the owner, Rachel, asked: “‘Do you know anyone who might help me with the children?’ I wrote back and said: ‘Tell me what that involves!’ She wrote me a little list, and I said: ‘I could do that!’ We seemed to believe in each other.”
Two months later, when Faulkner reached Varese, “the dad, Andrea, was walking towards me with the children hiding behind his legs, kind of shy, thinking: ‘Who is this woman in a long black coat?’ I don’t think it was quite Mary Poppins, but the atmosphere was immediately warm and friendly.”
Eighteen months on, Faulkner’s job no longer feels like a job. “I just feel like part of the family.” They joke: “You think you’re going back to Scotland? No, you’re staying here!” She gives English lessons, helps with the housework, meets the children from school, plays chess or table tennis with them, and takes them to the park. “It never feels like work,” she says. “It has been absolutely the perfect match.” Faulkner’s son, Steven, who lives in London, has visited her and they have cycled around the northern Italian lakes. She feels no more distant than when she lived in Edinburgh.
“You have to take the opportunity when it presents itself,” Jim once said.
“I’ll be 70 in January, but in my head, I’m 30. I still feel the same person, I have the same enthusiasm for life, the same interest in people and things. In that sense, I wish I had another 70,” Faulkner jokes.
24. Why did Joyce Faulkner search the Home Exchange website?
A. To hunt for a job. B. To buy a house in Italy.
C. To explore holiday resorts. D. To find a holiday home for exchange.
25. What probably caused Faulkner to be hired by Rachel?
A. Good luck. B. Mutual trust. C. Common interests. D. First impression.
26. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Faulkner feels less close to her son
B. Faulkner feels quite at home while babysitting in Italy.
C. Faulkner returned to her old business despite her advanced years.
D. Faulkner was thought of as a typical baby-sitter at the first meeting.
27. Which of the following can best describe Joyce Faulkner?
A. Caring and outgoing. B. Strict and responsible.
C. Devoted and passionate. D. Humorous and independent.

The Central Axis of Beijing runs 7.8 kilometers from north to south through the historic part of the city. It stands as an important part of Chinese cultural heritage and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2024. It is now China’s 59th world heritage site.
Built in the 13th century and fully finished in the 16th century, the axis includes many well-known buildings, including the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. These places show the traditional Chinese ideas of harmony and order in city planning. The whole heritage site covers 589 hectares, with a large buffer zone to protect its environment.
UNESCO has praised China’s long-term protection work. It says the axis still keeps its real historical look and is managed very well. Different from some old relics, it is still a lively part of modern Beijing. Local people go on with their daily lives here, and all kinds of cultural events are held along the axis every year.
To protect the historic site, the government has made strict rules for the area. New buildings nearby must follow clear height limits to keep the old city’s appearance. Workers repair old buildings in traditional ways carefully. More young people take part in volunteer work to tell visitors about its great value.
This special heritage shows the wisdom of ancient Chinese city design. Protecting it helps us pass on traditional culture and show the beauty of Chinese civilization to the world.
28. How does the government protect the Central Axis?
A. Builds more modern tall structures B. Takes official steps to protect the site
C. Stops different cultural events yearly D. Changes the look of ancient buildings
29. What does UNESCO think of the protection work?
A. It pays little attention to the site B. It shows strong dissatisfaction with it
C. It values China’s protection efforts D. It advises rebuilding parts of the axis
30. What can we infer from the text?
A. The axis still influences people’s daily life. B. Young people know little about cultural heritage.
C. Few cultural activities are held along the axis. D. The axis has a history of fewer than 200 years.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Ways to protect ancient buildings in Beijing
B. The introduction and protection of the Central Axis
C. Advice on holding events along the Central Axis
D. The development of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Wildlife around the world faces growing threats from human activity. Natural habitats are being lost quickly, and many species are declining at a worrying speed. As cities expand and farms become larger, wild animals lose their homes and main food sources. Pollution and illegal hunting further damage their living environment. Although the challenge is severe and complex, conservation (保护) projects in several countries have achieved encouraging and hopeful results in recent years.
Scientists first try to fully understand the needs and behavior of targeted animals. They spend months or even years observing the animals in their natural environments and collecting data on their population changes and living conditions. They record how the animals live, feed and raise their young in detail. This careful and systematic information helps them create effective, targeted plans instead of relying on simple, short-term methods that may not solve real problems.
Including local communities is widely considered necessary for long-term success. When local people can make money by protecting wildlife, such as through eco-tourism (生态旅游), they will strongly support protection efforts instead of harming the environment. In this way, wildlife protection becomes a shared social goal, not just a difficult task for scientists or the government alone.
A successful example can be clearly found in European grassland birds. Many kinds that were once very common have become rare because of intensive farming and landscape changes. Researchers worked closely with local farmers to keep certain areas of land undisturbed. These areas provided safe and peaceful places for birds to feed and breed. As time passed, the population of several bird species began to rise slowly and clearly.
Wildlife protection is a long and difficult task that requires continuous effort and close cooperation. However, the progress made so far shows that well-planned human action can really help endangered animals survive and recover. It proves that people and nature can live and develop in a balanced and healthy way.
32. What can be inferred about wildlife protection from the text?
A. It depends mostly on short-term plans. B. It needs joint efforts from different groups.
C. It has solved most wildlife problems already. D. It brings little benefit to local communities.
33. Why do scientists collect data on wild animals?
A. To change the animals’ living habits. B. To help create effective protection plans.
C. To stop all forms of human activity. D. To increase the number of farms quickly.
34. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How local people help with wildlife protection. B. How to run successful eco-tourism businesses.
C. Why wild animals are in great danger. D. What short-term protection methods are like.
35. What can we learn from the whole text?
A. Simple actions are enough to protect wildlife. B. Governments should solve all problems alone.
C. Proper human efforts help wildlife survive. D. Animals can recover well without human help.

Ten-year-old Josh came from a poor family. His mother was a part-time cleaner and his father fixed small appliances for his neighbors. Though the family’s clothes were faded and patched (打补丁的), and the rent was a constant worry at the end of the month, Josh’s parents always taught him that honesty cost nothing but was worth everything.
One afternoon, Josh walked his bike to old Mr. Black’s repair shop. The chain was broken again, and Mr. Black, who was familiar with their struggles — charged only two dollars for the repair. Before Josh left, Mr. Black warned that the frame was nearly worn out. Josh thanked him and promised to ride carefully.
On the way home, Josh discovered something at the bus stop — a thick envelope half-buried in snow. He picked it up and took a look inside. His eyes widened. It was full of cash, more money than he’d ever seen: Hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands.
His first thought was about his mother’s worn-out shoes and the rent that was due. He could slip the envelope into his jacket, and no one would know. But then he remembered his father’s words: “We might be poor, Josh, but we must be honest.” His heart raced as he weighed the wrong that was easy against the right that was hard. Then he sat down on the frozen bench, holding the envelope tightly, and waited.
An hour passed, then two. Josh’s toes grew numb (麻木的) as the setting sun painted the sky orange and pink. Occasionally, strangers walked by, eyeing him curiously, but he just held the envelope tighter. A woman asked if he was okay, but he simply shook his head and stayed put. His nose was red from cold, and he shivered uncontrollably, but he didn’t move. Finally, just as Josh began to worry about his parents’ concern, a black car stopped. Then a man named Eason in a suit jumped out, urgently scanning (察看) the ground.
