Can you imagine plants asking for help when they’re in trouble? It sounds strange, but new technology might let us “hear” their “calls”!
Keeping plants alive through seasonal changes is a difficult task. In the past, scientists checked if plants were stressed by taking small samples (样本) from them or by carefully watching changes in their fluorescence (荧光). However, taking samples can harm the plants, and changes in fluorescence are hard to see clearly. Now, a new plant-wearable device (装置) can solve these problems.
This tiny device can be placed on plant leaves. And it can also sense (检测) H₂O₂-a chemical that plants produce when they are under environmental stress. When the device senses H₂O₂, its special material will turn the chemical into an electric current (电流). In this way, farmers can quickly learn how stressed their plants are, with almost no harm to the plants.
In tests, the device was put on different plants. Some plants got sick, while others stayed healthy. The device on sick plants quickly showed signs of H₂O₂, which meant the plants were stressed. The best part is that the device can be reused up to 9 times, and each test costs less than $1. That’s cheap enough for farmers to check their plants for diseases (病虫害) every day!
With technology like this, we can protect nature better and live in peace with the world around us. After all, plants are important for our planet. Taking good care of them is taking good care of ourselves.
43. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a joke. B. By listing numbers.
C. By raising a question. D. By sharing experience.
44. What is the problem with taking samples from plants to check stress?
A. It is too expensive. B. It needs special tools.
C. It takes too much time. D. It can harm the plants.
45. What are the advantages of the plant-wearable device?
① It is low-cost. ② It can be reused several times.
③ It hardly causes harm to plants. ④ It can be made easily by farmers.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①②③④
46. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The secret language of plants B. New Al robots: the future of farming
C. How to protect plants from diseases D. A new device to “hear” plants’ “calls”
D
China has made a big step forward in airplane technology by introducing a new super-light miniature turbojet engine (微型涡喷发动机). This engine, produced mainly through 3D printing, has successfully completed its first single-engine flight test.
During the test, the engine powered a small target drone (目标靶机). The drone flew for a full 30 minutes, climbing to 6, 000 meters and reaching a speed of Mach (马赫) 0.75, which is about 75% of the speed of sound. What’s more, the engine worked smoothly the whole time with zero problems.
In fact, there was an earlier test in July last year, when the engine was carried under a plane but didn’t power the flight. Now, this real flight has proved (证明) that the engine can work well and even fly higher in difficult conditions. It also showed how well it fits with the drone.
This is China’s first 3D-printed, super-light turbojet engine in the 160-kilogram thrust (推力) class to pass a flight test. Engineers used smart design methods, along with 3D printing, to make it light yet powerful. In fact, more than 75% of the engine’s parts were created with 3D printers. This reduced the total number of pieces, and made the engine lighter and easier to use and fix.
This progress helps China improve its skills and keep up with other countries in the field of engine-making. With these cool technologies, maybe one day you will help design even better engines!
47. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The design of the new 3D - printed engine.
B. The problems of the drone test flight.
C. The process and results of the drone test.
D. The speed of the target drone.
48. What do we know about the engine in an earlier test in July last year?
A. It didn’t fit well with the drone. B. It failed to work in high places.
C. It successfully powered a target drone. D. It was carried along but didn’t work.
49. How did engineers reduce the engine’s total number of pieces?
A. They used 3D printing. B. They painted the engine.
C. They made the engine by hand. D. They used glue to stick parts together.
50. What can we infer (推测) from the passage?
A. This progress helps China improve its skills in engine-making.
B. This new engine may have more practical uses in the future.
C. More than 75% of the engine’s parts were created with 3D printers.
D. The engine can fly higher and faster than any other plane in the world.
