Huang Xuhua, the main designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away on February 6th, 2025 in Wuhan, Hubei Province. He was 99 years old.
Huang Xuhua was born in March, 1926. His parents were doctors and they lived in Guangdong Province. Huang was their third child. He grew up during the war. Then he studied ship design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After graduating, he began working on ships for China. In 1958, he was selected to help create China’s first nuclear submarines.
At first, Huang’s team had very little information. They read newspapers and magazines to find clues (线索). “It was so hard to find useful facts,” Huang said later. “We couldn’t even tell if the information was true.” The team studied two American submarine models and finally made five possible plans.
In the following years, Huang led the team to build China’s first nuclear submarines called Type 091. These submarines could stay underwater much longer than regular ones.
People didn’t know Huang’s full name until 1987. Before that, his work was kept secret because of national security (安全) reasons. The first Type 091 submarine that Huang Xuhua helped build has served for 40 years. Now it is on show at a military (军事) museum in Qingdao. Because of his great work, Huang received China’s top honor — the Medal of the Republic — in 2019.
