The Story of the Computer
Computers have come a long way since the 19th century. In 1837, Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace designed the first machine with a computer program. Ada realized that a computer could do more than just add numbers, making her the first computer programmer.
In 1936, Alan Turing created the Turing machine, which became the basic design for all modern computers. The machine could perform different calculations and run various programs. Then, in the 1940s, scientists built the first early computers in England and Germany. These machines were huge—as big as a room—and very slow.
The next big change came in 1971 when Ted Hoff invented the microprocessor (or “microchip”). This was a major breakthrough. Thanks to the microchip, computers became much faster and smaller. By 1981, the first personal computers (PCs) were sold to the general public. Experts didn’t think people would want computers at home, but thousands were sold in just two years.
Today, smartphones have taken over. They are small computers that can connect to the Internet and run apps. In the future, quantum computers will be the next big thing. They will be much faster and more powerful than today’s computers. Who knows what new inventions will come next?
1. What did Ada Lovelace realize about computers in 1837?
A. They could only add big numbers
B. They could do more than just calculations
C. They would never be useful for people
D. They could run video games
2. Why was the Turing machine important?
A. It was the first personal computer
B. It could only do one kind of calculation
C. It became the basic design for modern computers
D. It was invented by Charles Babbage
3. What effect did the microchip have on computers?
A. It made them bigger and slower
B. It made them faster and smaller
C. It made them impossible to use at home
D. It made them only work in large rooms
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The history and development of computers over time
B. How smartphones changed people’s lives
C. The problems with early computers
D. The future of quantum computers
