The Old Man and the King

The old man said slowly, “If I win, I’d like one grain of rice for the first square of the chessboard, two for the second, four for the third… and double the amount for each of the rest of the squares.”
The king laughed and thought, “That’s too little! Why not ask for gold or silver?” The old man replied without hesitation, “No, just rice.”
They played for a long time, and the old man won. The king ordered his men to collect rice. They put one grain on the first square, two on the second, and so on.
