Encyclopaedias are useful tools for learning. The word “encyclopaedia” comes from a Greek word meaning “general education”. We use them to find information about different subjects. Nowadays, most people use online encyclopaedias, but some still prefer paper ones.

China has a long history of creating encyclopaedias. One of the first was the Huanglan (The Imperial Anthology), created around 220 CE. Another important one was the Yongle Dadian (Yongle Encyclopaedia), completed in 1408. It had over 11,000 volumes and is probably the largest encyclopaedia in history. Both included important writing about history, art and science.
