Why Many Young People Today Prefer to Stay Unnoticed
Many young people today don’t want to be noticed by others. Why do they feel this way? Three students from different countries share their ideas.
I think there are two main reasons. First, social pressure is increasing. In China, students like us face heavy stress from schoolwork and future expectations. Being noticed often brings more pressure, which can be tiring.
Second, young people want to protect their privacy. With the rapid development of the Internet, personal information can easily be exposed, so staying low-key helps avoid unnecessary trouble.
I sometimes feel the same way. When I perform poorly on exams, I prefer to stay unnoticed, which helps me calm down, relax and feel more comfortable.
At my school in the US, some classmates dislike being the center of attention. They stay quiet in class and avoid speaking up. I think pressure is a key reason.
When you’re young, being noticed can feel anxious because mistakes are clear to see. Social media makes this feeling stronger. Everyone online seems confident and perfect, making real-life attention more stressful.
I’m quite different, though. I enjoy being noticed when I’m doing something I love. This became clear during a Chinese language competition in China, where I happily stood under the stage lights and felt energized by the audience.
In Germany, being quiet is not a weakness. Students who listen carefully and don’t try to stand out are often seen as serious and reliable. That’s why many young people here avoid attention, including me.
Once, I had to present my project in class. Standing in front of everyone made me uncomfortable. I spoke quickly and avoided eye contact. It wasn’t fear — it was the pressure of being watched.
This comes from our culture. In Germany, we value order, teamwork, and modesty. For me, confidence means being calm and thoughtful, even without attention.
1.Where are the three students from?
2.In Liyan’s opinion, why do young people prefer to stay low-key on the Internet?
3.When does Ivana enjoy being noticed?
4.How did Johanna present her project in class?
5.What does confidence mean to Johanna?
6.Do you like to be noticed or unnoticed? Please give an example (not included in the above text) and one reason.
【答案】1.They are from China, the US and Germany. 2.Because staying low-key helps protect their privacy and avoid unnecessary trouble. 3.When she is doing something she loves. 4.She spoke quickly and avoided eye contact. 5.Being calm and thoughtful, even without attention. 6.I prefer to stay unnoticed when reading, as it helps me focus better without pressure.
【导语】本文介绍来自中、美、德三国的学生分享年轻人不愿被关注的原因及个人感受。

The Mystery Locker
①Every student at Riverwood School has a locker, but Mia’s locker is special. Not because of the stickers on the door or the bright blue paint inside—it is special because someone keeps leaving small surprises in it.
②The first gift appeared in September: a tiny paper star with a note, “Hope you smile today.” Mia looked around the hallway, but nobody acted differently. She thought it was a mistake and forgot about it.
③Two weeks later, she found a bookmark with a drawing of a cat. In October, she discovered a packet of hot chocolate. Each item was simple but thoughtful. Her friends joked that she had a “secret locker friend”. Mia liked the idea but still had no clue who it was.
④One rainy morning, Mia arrived at school feeling tired. When she opened her locker, she found a small card: “Rainy days can still be bright. Hang in there—things will get better soon.” There was also a tiny sunflower sticker. For some reason, these words warmed her heart more than the others.
⑤Mia started paying more attention. She noticed that every surprise appeared on days when she seemed stressed or quiet. Someone was watching—but kindly, not in a strange way.
⑥Before the winter holidays, Mia decided to leave a note inside her locker door: “To my secret friend, ”
⑦After the break, she found a final note waiting for her: “You’re welcome. Sometimes people need a little light.”
⑧There was no name, but Mia no longer needed to know. She realized that small acts of kindness can change someone’s day — and that was the real mystery behind the locker.
1.Mia’s locker has stickers on the door, doesn’t it?
2.What was the first gift Mia found in her locker?
3.What idiom in the fourth paragraph means “don’t give up”?
4.When were the surprises most likely to appear?
5.What can be filled in the blank?
6.Do you think the “secret locker friend” did the right thing? Why or why not? (Give 2 reasons)
【答案】1.Yes, it does. 2.A tiny paper star with a note. 3.Hang in there 4.On days when Mia seemed stressed or quiet. 5.Thank you for all your kind surprises. 6.Yes. First, it made Mia feel warm and happy. Second, it taught people the importance of kindness.
【导语】本文讲述了Mia的储物柜总会收到神秘人留下的暖心小惊喜,最终她明白小小的善意举动就能温暖、改变他人一天的暖心故事。
1.根据第①段“Not because of the stickers on the door…”,可以确定Mia的储物柜门上确实贴有贴纸,故作肯定回答。
2.根据第②段“The first gift appeared in September: a tiny paper star with a note”,可直接提取该信息作答。
3.根据第④段“Hang in there—things will get better soon.”,这个固定口语表达的含义就是“坚持下去、不要放弃”,符合题目释义。
4.根据第⑤段“She noticed that every surprise appeared on days when she seemed stressed or quiet”,直接点明惊喜出现的时间。
5.前文Mia一直收到对方的匿名善意礼物,后文对方回复“You’re welcome”,所以空白处Mia的留言核心为表达感谢,合理通顺即可,答案不唯一。
6.本题为开放性主观题,观点言之有理即可。

Discover the Joy of Kidulting: It’s Time to Play!
Do you still get excited when you see a box of colourful crayons? Have you ever secretly wanted to jump into a ball pit? If you answer “yes”, congratulations—you are a “kidult”! It is a fun trend (趋势) where adults do kid things, and it is totally awesome.
Why does everyone suddenly act like a kid again? It is because we are all so busy with work and responsibilities that our brains feel tired. Kidulting helps us remember the good old days when our biggest worry was which cartoon to watch. Missing the past is a powerful thing! Big companies know this, too. Now, you can buy “Happy Meals” designed just for adults with cool toys inside. Who says only kids get the prizes?
Kidulting is not about being childish; it is about being joyful. When you do something fun, like building a Lego castle or playing a video game, your brain releases happy chemicals. These chemicals wash away stress and make you feel alive again. Psychologists say that playing helps us think better and feel more creative. It also gives our overworked minds a much-needed vacation.
Even better, kidulting can also work like a time machine. Maybe when you were little, you couldn’t _________________ or you didn’t _______________________. Buying it now or doing that activity can make those old painful feelings go away. It is like giving a high-five to your younger self.
So, why should you try it? Because being a grown-up is hard work, but finding happiness shouldn’t be! Go ahead, blow some bubbles, laugh at a silly cartoon, or challenge your friends to a game. Life is too short to be serious all the time. Let your inner child come out and play!
1.The word “kidult” is a mix of two single words. What are they?
2.What will a kidult probably like to do, watch cartoons or study in the library?
3.Why has kidulting suddenly become a fun trend?
4.In what way is playing good for us according to psychologists?
5.What examples does the writer use to explain that kidulting can also work like a time machine? Fill in the blanks in paragraph 4.
Maybe when you were little, you or you .
6.What do you think of kidulting? Is Kidulting necessary, or is it just a strange behavior? Why?
【答案】1.They are “kid” and “adult”. 2.Watch cartoons. 3.Because people are busy with work and responsibilities, their brains feel tired. Kidulting helps them remember the good old days of childhood, and missing the past is a powerful driving force. 4.Playing helps us think better, feel more creative, and gives our overworked minds a much-needed vacation. 5. afford a toy you liked have time to play your favorite games (答案不唯一) 6.I think kidulting is necessary. Because modern adults face a lot of pressure from work and life, kidulting can help them relax, release stress, and keep a positive attitude towards life. It’s not strange, but a healthy way to take care of their mental health. (答案不唯一)
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要围绕“成人童趣行为”这一潮流展开,介绍其定义、流行原因、对心理的益处等内容。
1.根据第1段“Do you still get excited when you see a box of colourful crayons? Have you ever secretly wanted to jump into a ball pit? If you answer “yes”, congratulations—you are a “kidult”! It is a fun trend (趋势) where adults do kid things, and it is totally awesome.”可知,kidult是合成词,由“kid”和“adult”组合而成。
2.根据第1段中的“It is a fun trend (趋势) where adults do kid things, and it is totally awesome.”可知,kidult会做孩童的事,“watch cartoons”是孩童的活动,在图书馆学习“study in the library”是成年人的常规活动。
3.根据第2段中的“It is because we are all so busy with work and responsibilities that our brains feel tired. Kidulting helps us remember the good old days when our biggest worry was which cartoon to watch. Missing the past is a powerful thing!”可知,是因为我们都忙于工作和责任,我们的大脑感到疲倦。成人童趣行为有助于我们回忆起过去的美好时光,那时我们最担心的是看哪部动画片。怀念过去是一件强大的事情!
4.根据第3段中的“Psychologists say that playing helps us think better and feel more creative. It also gives our overworked minds a much-needed vacation.”可知,心理学家说,玩耍有助于我们更好地思考,感觉更有创造力。它也为我们过度劳累的大脑提供了一个急需的假期。
5.根据前文“Even better, kidulting can also work like a time machine.”和下文“Buying it now or doing that activity can make those old painful feelings go away. It is like giving a high-five to your younger self.”可知,“time machine”是指童年无法做/拥有的事,成年后可以实现,这是一道开放性的试题,答案不唯一,比如:①afford a toy you liked;②have time to play your favorite games。
6.这是一道开放性的试题,答案不唯一,结合文中关于“Kidulting”对心理的益处回答,言之有理即可。

Dear Bella, Long time no see. How are you and your three puppies? Do you remember the graduation study tour I told you about? I’ve just returned from Singapore. There’s so much to share!
We spent the first two days at a local school. On Day 1, we had to introduce ourselves in front of everyone. I shook like a leaf. Luckily, everyone encouraged me by clapping and cheering. I made many friends after playing group games. I found that two of my new Singaporean friends love watching music shows just like me!
On Day 2, we had classes with the students. We joined their English, Maths and Science lessons. We learnt about their school life and how it’s different from ours. It was an interesting experience.
We also visited some famous tourist spots. On Day 3, we went to a theme park. Then, we went to Merlion Park. The Merlion has a lion’s head and a fish’s body. I got you a postcard of it! At night, we watched the Supertree music and light show in Gardens by the Bay.
On the last day, we went to a zoo. We saw penguins, giraffes and zebras. I wanted to hear the lions’ roar! Sadly, they were sleeping. Before going to the airport, we visited a hawker centre and had chicken rice. It was delicious!
We should visit Singapore together! Please check when your next holiday is. Bye for now. Let’s keep in touch.
Best wishes,
Jane

Taking part in a “citizen science” project, and you’ll work with other people and do small but meaningful things to protect our planet.
◆ What is citizen science?
Citizen science projects are led by scientists and supported by the public. They can include many activities, from stargazing (观星) to whale watching. You don’t need to be an expert to join in — anyone can be a citizen scientist. By counting, measuring, watching and listening, citizen scientists collect information that helps professional scientists and researchers to understand the world better.
◆ How is helping good for you?
Being a citizen scientist isn’t just great for the planet, it’s good for you too. Sabrina Romanoff, a psychologist (心理学家), says taking part in the projects helps you learn new skills. Her research also shows it makes you feel happier and more confident. When you take action on a problem that matters to you, you are helping to find a solution. You are also making new discoveries. Citizen science projects encourage people to do simple and helpful research. When you realize that you’re making a positive difference, you can be proud of yourselves.
◆ What project can you take part in?
There are many different citizen science projects you can join, each focusing on a different part of nature. For example, The Big Garden Bird-watch project asks you to spend one hour counting the number of birds you see. Your results help scientists record bird species (物种) in the UK: which ones are doing well and which are having trouble. The Big Seaweed (海藻) Search project asks people to photograph 14 species of seaweed on UK beaches. The findings help scientists understand how healthy our seas are. Nick Wilson, one of many citizen scientists, says taking part in such projects means a lot to him. It not only ____________ but also ____________.
1.Are citizen science projects supported by the public?
2.How do citizen scientists collect information?

A service of love
Delia was a young pianist with a kind heart. Her husband Joe was a hardworking painter. They lived in a small apartment in New York. Both were taking expensive lessons — Delia with a famous German pianist, and Joe with a well-known art teacher. They didn’t have much money, but they believed that when you love art, no cost is too high.
Soon, however, their savings ran out. One afternoon, Delia told Joe she had met a man whose daughter wanted piano lessons. She would earn $ 50 an hour teaching the girl. Joe wasn’t happy about it. “I’d rather you continued your lessons,” he said. But Delia insisted, “When I’ve made some money, I’ll start again.” Hearing this, Joe decided to stop his own lessons and try to sell his paintings instead.
A few days later, Joe came home happily with $ 200. “A man from Vermont bought one of my paintings!” he told Delia. Delia became very pleased, and for a while, their money worries disappeared. They missed their lessons, but life seemed easier.
Then one evening, Joe noticed a bandage on Delia’s hand. “What happened?” he asked. Delia explained, “My student Sally asked for coffee, and I accidentally spilled it. She bought this bandage for me.” Joe looked into her eyes and asked her to sit down. “Tell me the truth, Delia. What have you really been doing these two weeks?”
Delia tried to stay calm, but then tears filled her eyes. “I couldn’t find any students, so I took a job as a waitress. Today, I burned my hand with hot water and lost my job. I’m sorry… But at least we still have the money from your buyer in Vermont, right?”
Joe held her hand gently. “There is no man from Vermont,” he admitted. “I didn’t sell any paintings. I’ve been working at a drugstore. Today, someone came in to buy a bandage for a waitress who burned her hand. When I saw your bandage, I understood everything.”
For a moment, they were silent. Then they both smiled. “So we both told lies,” Joe said softly. “But when you love your art…”
Delia touched his lips. “No, Joe,” she whispered. “Just ‘when you love…’”
1.Delia and Joe spent much money on their lessons at first, didn’t they?
2.Why was Joe unhappy after he heard Delia would stop taking piano lessons?
3.How did Delia feel when Joe went home with $ 200?
4.Where did Joe actually work?
5.What did Joe understand when he saw Delia’s bandage?
6.Do you think Joe and Delia were wrong to tell each other lies? Why?
【答案】1.Yes, they did. 2.Because he didn’t want Delia to give up her piano lessons and her dream. 3.She felt very pleased and happy. 4.He worked at a drugstore. 5.He understood that Delia had been working as a waitress and burned her hand at work, just like he had been working at the drugstore and lying to her. 6.No, I don’t think they were wrong. They lied because they loved each other deeply and wanted to support each other’s dreams, even if it meant hiding the truth to protect each other.
1.第一段指出“Both were taking expensive lessons — Delia with a famous German pianist, and Joe with a well-known art teacher.”及“they believed that when you love art, no cost is too high.”,明确说明他们都在上昂贵的课程且认为为了艺术花费再多也值得,因此他们在课程上花了很多钱。
2.根据第二段Joe的话“I’d rather you continued your lessons,”可知,他不开心是因为他更希望Delia能继续她的钢琴课程,而不是为了赚钱去教别人。
3.第三段指出“Delia became very pleased, and for a while, their money worries disappeared.”,因此当Joe带着200美元回家时,Delia感到非常高兴/欣慰。
4.第六段Joe承认“I’ve been working at a drugstore.”,所以他实际工作地点是药店。
5.第六段描述Joe看到Delia的绷带后,联想到“Today, someone came in to buy a bandage for a waitress who burned her hand.”,并结合Delia之前的谎言和受伤的手,他推断出Delia并没有找到学生,而是在做服务员并烫伤了手。
6.本题为开放性试题,答案不唯一。可从“善意谎言”的角度理解,他们的谎言源于对彼此的爱与牺牲,目的是减轻对方负担;亦可从“诚信”角度认为即使是善意的谎言也可能带来问题。

After helping at the small soup kitchen on Maple Street, CJ went outside to rest. The building was old. The bricks were faded, and the sign said, “Welcome-All Are Loved Here.” The sun was setting, and the sky was orange, pink, and purple. The city looked different, now less grey, more alive.
CJ saw a little girl chasing bubbles on the cracked sidewalk. She laughed as the bubbles floated and popped. A man sat on a worn bench under a streetlamp, playing a guitar. It was the same gentle song CJ had heard on the bus. He smiled-the music had followed him here.
Nana came out and sat next to him on the steps. She gave him a bottle of water. “Tired?” she asked.
CJ drank some water. “A little. But I feel good.”
“That is what helping does,” Nana said. “It fills your heart.”
CJ looked around. The streets looked tidy. The buildings had old, cracked paint. But he saw other things too. A painting of a big tree was on one wall. Children laughed in the nearby park. A cat walked by, rubbing against a bicycle. He could smell fresh bread from the bakery across the street.
He looked at Nana. “I used to think this part of the city was ugly. But it is not. I just didn’t look carefully.”
Nana smiled. “Sometimes, you need more than eyes to really see.”
CJ sat quietly. The warm breeze touched his face. He listened to the music, the laughter, and the city sounds. For the first time, he understood.
When they went home, CJ looked around one last time. The city was the same, but he had changed.
1.When did the story take place?
2.Why did CJ step outside the soup kitchen?
3.Did the city look ugly or beautiful to CJ when he looked carefully?
4.How did CJ feel after helping at the soup kitchen?
5.What did Nana mean by saying, “Sometimes, you need more than eyes to really see.”?
She meant that
6.What changes had happened to CJ by the end of the story? (At least two points)
【答案】1.It took place when the sun was setting. 2.Because he wanted to rest. 3.It looked beautiful. 4.He felt a little tired but good and his heart was filled. 5.we need to use our hearts to feel the beauty of things instead of just looking with our eyes. 6.First, he changed his opinion about the city (from thinking it ugly to finding it beautiful). Second, he learned to truly see things with his heart.
3.倒数第四段CJ说 “I used to think this part of the city was ugly. But it is not. I just didn’t look carefully.” 明确说明仔细看后城市是美丽的,答案是对原文的直接提取。
4.第三段CJ和Nana的对话“Tired?” “A little. But I feel good.” 以及第五段“That is what helping does,” Nana said. “It fills your heart.”可概括出CJ帮忙后的感受,答案整合了原文信息。
5.倒数第三段Nana说 “Sometimes, you need more than eyes to really see.” 结合前文CJ一开始觉得城市丑,仔细看后觉得美,可推断出意思是 “we need to use our hearts to feel the beauty of things instead of just looking with our eyes”,答案是对原文含义的合理阐释。
6.本题答案是对最后一段信息的概括总结。该段提到两个事实:一是 “he changed his opinion about the city (from thinking it ugly to finding it beautiful)”(改变了对城市的看法),二是 “he learned to truly see things with his heart”(学会用心去看事物)。答案将这两点进行了整合。

A notice on the school notice board read: Track-and-Field tryouts (选拔赛) next Wednesday!
Brian was excited but worried about his performance. He got his parents to sign the forms, and his doctor said he was fine to try out. On the day of tryouts, Brian walked to the outdoor track and saw many boys and girls warming up. His heart started racing as he joined them.
A woman he recognized held a signboard and had a whistle around her neck. She blew it to get everyone’s attention. “Hello, I’m Coach Reed! We will have one hour of tryouts each day this week. I’m looking for strong jumpers for the hurdles (跨栏) and the long jump, and fast runners for the 100-meter, 200-meter, and more.”
Brian raised his hand because she hadn’t mentioned throwing events. “What about shot put (铅球)?” he asked.
“We don’t have enough money for throwing events this year. There is no javelin (标枪), no discus (铁饼), and no shot put.”
Brian was heartbroken. All that hard work for nothing, he thought.
Coach Reed noticed his disappointment. When the other kids walked toward the hurdles, she stopped him. “I know you really wanted to do shot put,” she said kindly. “But I need someone tall like you to try hurdling.”
Brian felt ________. He thought his height would only hurt his chances, but now it seemed like an advantage! During the tryout for the hurdles, he fell twice, but still finished in the middle of the group. Coach Reed smiled, “Nice job! Let’s see how good you are at the long jump, and then, I want you in the 800-meter.”
By the end of the week, Brian was exhausted but unexpectedly happy as he waited for the team selection to be posted. He thought about when he had first started this journey by trying to throw that heavy rock in the backyard. Whether he made the team or not, Brian was proud of himself.
1.Brian wasn’t in good health when he tried out, was he?
2.How did Coach Reed get everyone’s attention on the track?
3.Why was Brian heartbroken after Coach Reed’s announcement?
4.How did Brian feel when the Coach said, “But I need someone tall like you to try hurdling.”?
5.What do the underlined words this journey in the last paragraph refer to?
6.Why was Brian proud of himself even though he didn’t know if he would make the team?
【答案】1.Yes, he was. 2.She blew the whistle around her neck to get everyone’s attention./By blowing the whistle around her neck. 3.Because Coach Reed said they don’t have enough money for throwing events this year, and Brian had worked hard to prepare for it. 4.He felt surprised/hopeful/unexpectedly surprised/encouraged. 5.It refers to Brian’s journey of preparing for the track-and-field tryouts. 6.Brian was proud of himself because he didn’t give up when he faced problems./He also tried new events that he had never done before. He kept trying and worked hard to improve himself.
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了Brian原本为校运会铅球项目做准备,却因学校经费不足取消投掷项目而失落,后在教练的鼓励下尝试跨栏、跳远和长跑,最终收获成长与自信的故事。
1.根据文章第二段中“He got his parents to sign the forms, and his doctor said he was fine to try out.”,医生确认他身体状况良好,可以参加选拔,因此反意疑问句的回答为肯定。故填“Yes, he was.”。
2.根据文章第三段中“She blew it to get everyone’s attention”,教练通过吹口哨的方式让所有人安静下来,获得大家的注意。故填“She blew the whistle around her neck to get everyone’s attention./By blowing the whistle around her neck.”。
3.根据文章第四、五段,Brian原本为铅球项目做了很多准备,但教练宣布学校今年没有足够的经费开设投掷项目(包括铅球、标枪、铁饼),他的努力白费了,因此心碎。故填“Because Coach Reed said they don’t have enough money for throwing events this year, and Brian had worked hard to prepare for it.”。
4.根据文章倒数第二段,Brian原本以为自己的身高是劣势,没想到教练认为这是跨栏的优势,他的心情从失落转为意外和振奋。故填“He felt surprised/hopeful/unexpectedly surprised/encouraged.”。
5.根据上下文,“this journey”指代的是Brian为参加校运会选拔赛而付出的整个努力过程,从最初为铅球训练,到后来尝试跨栏、跳远、长跑等多个项目的经历。故填“It refers to Brian’s journey of preparing for the track-and-field tryouts.”。
故填“Brian was proud of himself because he didn’t give up when he faced problems./He also tried new events that he had never done before. He kept trying and worked hard to improve himself.”。

An eight-year-old boy, Alex, has a plan to help his best friend, Lily, live a more independent life. Lily was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a rare disease that makes her muscles (肌肉) very weak. She cannot walk or move by herself and must use a wheelchair. Her present wheelchair is old and uncomfortable, and it does not meet her daily needs, which makes it difficult for her to go to school or play with friends.
Alex decided to take action. He set a challenge for himself: to run a total of 22 miles over six weeks in order to raise enough money to buy Lily a new wheelchair. His father encouraged him from the beginning. “Helping others is important,” his father said, “and it makes you feel strong inside.” Alex trained carefully every day, even when the weather was cold or rainy.
Lily was very touched by his efforts. “I’m proud of Alex,” she said. “He runs so fast and raises money for me. I feel really happy. Every time he runs, we cheer together, ‘Go, Alex, go!’”
The new wheelchair costs £2,000, but Alex is already close to reaching his goal thanks to donations from neighbours, friends and schoolmates. When asked why Lily is such a good friend, Alex explained, “She is always kind to me. We play together, talk about everything, and share secrets. She’s my best friend.”
Alex also described how he finds strength during his runs: “Sometimes it’s really hard to keep running, and my legs feel tired, but I think ___________________. That thought keeps me going.”
Stories like Alex and Lily’s show that true friendship can bring out courage and determination. Helping a friend, even in small ways, can make a big difference. Their story reminds us that caring for each other and showing kindness are among the most important things in life.
1.Why does Lily have to use a wheelchair?
2.Did Alex plan to run 22 miles in one day?
3.Besides feeling proud, how did Lily feel about Alex’s efforts?
4.Who helped Alex reach his goal?
5.Complete the sentence about Alex’s thought in Paragraph 5 within 10 words.
6.The article says “Helping a friend, even in small ways, can make a big difference.”
Give one example to show how you can help a friend in your daily life in less than 30 words.
【答案】1.Because she was born with spinal muscular atrophy, which makes her muscles very weak and she cannot walk or move by herself. 2.No, he didn’t. 3.She felt really happy. 4.Neighbours, friends and schoolmates. 5.about Lily/I’m doing this for Lily/I want to help Lily 6.I can help my friend carry his/her schoolbag when he/she is tired.(答案不唯一)
1.第一段明确提到“Lily was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a rare disease that makes her muscles (肌肉) very weak. She cannot walk or move by herself and must use a wheelchair.”,这表明Lily必须使用轮椅是因为她生来患有脊髓性肌萎缩症,这种罕见疾病使她的肌肉非常虚弱,无法自己行走或移动,答案是对原文信息的整合。
2.根据第二段“He set a challenge for himself: to run a total of 22 miles over six weeks in order to raise enough money to buy Lily a new wheelchair.”可知,Alex计划在六周内跑完22英里,而不是一天跑22英里,答案为否定回答,是原文直接信息的判断。
3.从第三段“Lily was very touched by his efforts. ‘I’m proud of Alex,’ she said. ‘He runs so fast and raises money for me. I feel really happy.’”能直接得出,除了感到骄傲,Lily对Alex的努力还感到非常开心,这是原文具体表述的提取。
4.由第四段“The new wheelchair costs £2,000, but Alex is already close to reaching his goal thanks to donations from neighbours, friends and schoolmates.”可知,邻居、朋友和同学通过捐款帮助Alex接近目标,答案是对原文信息的提取。
5.结合前文Alex为帮助Lily筹集资金买新轮椅而跑步,以及后文“That thought keeps me going.”

BOOK OF THE WEEK
Anne of Green Gables
Anne of Green Gables is a great book by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
In the story, two siblings, Marilla and Matthew, live on a farm called Green Gables. They are getting old and need someone to help with the farm work. So, they decide to adopt a boy from an orphanage. But there’s a mistake. Instead of a boy, a girl named Anne Shirley is sent to them. Anne has red hair and a very big imagination. She loves talking a lot and often makes silly, funny mistakes. This story tells us how this lonely little girl finds a home at Green Gables. She grows up with love and hope around her. Lucy Maud Montgomery
Montgomery was raised by her grandparents following her mother’s early death. She began keeping diaries and writing poetry at the age of nine, and this creative practice helped ease her loneliness. She finished writing Anne of Green Gables in 1905, getting ideas from her own childhood stories. When the book was finally published three years later, it became an immediate hit among readers of all ages. When she died in 1942, she was buried in her hometown of Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. Some book reviews of Anne of Green Gables
Cathy:
Anne is smart, brave, and filled with feelings. She is not quiet or perfect she makes mistakes, gets angry, and dreams big. This made children see that girls can be strong and independent. Today, many books have strong girl characters, like Hermione in Harry Potter. Anne helped start this idea. Ben:
Anne sees magic in ordinary things—trees are “flower queens”, and lakes are “a sea of beauty”, which makes the story ________ and ________. Today, many children’s books use imagination to help kids see the world in a new way. Books like Where the Wild Things Are also show how imagination helps children deal with feelings. Linda:
Before Anne, many children’s books were about being good and obeying rules. Anne’s story is different—it is about being yourself, using your mind, and finding your place in the world. This new style has influenced many books we read today.
1.When was Anne of Green Gables published?

JUNE 23
I just got home from my weekly dinner with Dad. He had got a plan—we’re going on a six-day trip, camping and white-water rafting, just two of us. I’m not sure how I feel. Since my parents divorced (离婚) last year, the longest time Dad and I have spent together was a two-day weekend.
JULY 14
Dad picked me up this morning. At first, neither of us talked. I didn’t know what to say, so I just pretended to enjoy the view. Then Dad broke the silence and we started chatting. We chatted all the way. I didn’t even notice we had arrived at the campsite.
JULY 16
Yesterday was my first time getting into a raft. Our guide showed us how to paddle (用桨划船), but at first Dad and I couldn’t work together well. But soon we got it, and the raft started moving smoothly. Then we hit the rapids (急流). The guide shouted a warning, and suddenly waves were everywhere. The raft went up and down like a roller coaster. We got completely wet within seconds. It was so exciting and scary that I ________ at the same time. Behind me, I heard Dad yell, “You okay?” Then again, “You having fun?” He kept asking, over and over. It was a little annoying, but made me feel warm inside.
JULY 18
Wow, today was kind of scary! Our raft moved into a part of the river with huge rocks. The water pulled us one way, and then pulled us in the opposite direction. I got really frightened. I looked at Dad—he looked worried or scared, too. He leaned over, held my hand, and said, “We can do this. Together.” So we did. We shouted to each other—“Come on! Almost there!” “You’re doing great!”—as we found our way to calmer waters. We sat in the raft, breathing hard, and then we both started laughing.
JULY 19
I can’t believe the trip was over. Dad just drove me to Mom’s, and we waved goodbye. Something between us feels different now. But something else—something deeper—has never changed.

Robinson Crusoe, a young Englishman with a strong desire for adventure, was determined to sail across the seas. Despite his parents’ strong disagreement, he went on a voyage secretly. Unfortunately, his ship was destroyed by a huge storm. He became the only survivor and was washed up on an unknown island...
When I woke up, the storm was over. I found myself lying on a strange island. The sun was shining brightly, and the waves were gently beating against the shore. There was nothing but sand, rocks and thick forest as far as I could see. My ship had been broken into pieces during the storm, and all the sailors had disappeared. I was completely alone, with no one to turn to for help.
At first I felt hopeless and afraid. I had no food, no clean water and no tools. I did not know where I was or how long I might survive in this wild place. But soon I realized that crying and worrying were completely useless.
I walked along the shore and saw our ship’s wreckage (残骸) nearby, and went over and climbed on board. I managed to take several useful things from it: some bread, rice, guns, bullets, daily tools, and even a few coins. I made a small raft to carry them to the shore, after which I built a simple tent near a hill and lit a fire for warmth and safety. Sitting by the fire, I promised myself I would never give up.
In the following days, I worked hard to survive on the island. I found safe wild fruits to eat, made a fishing net to catch fish for food, and made simple wooden tools such as an axe and a shovel. Every afternoon, I collected dry wood to keep a fire burning day and night, because the fire could scare away dangerous animals. Every night, I wrote down my experiences in my journal to encourage myself and stay brave.
Slowly, the island no longer seemed so terrible. I told myself again and again: I must keep going. I finally learned that __________________.

Two months ago, during the school holiday, a 13-year-old Australian boy, Austin Appelbee, went on a relaxing beach holiday with his mother and two younger sisters. One sunny afternoon, they went kayaking (皮划艇) in shallow water near the beach. The weather was perfect at first, with no big waves and just a little soft wind. They laughed and talked happily, enjoying the wonderful time by the sea. All of a sudden, a strong wind swept in, pushing their small kayak far out to the sea. Before they could take any action, they ended up over four kilometres away from land, with the daylight fading quickly and the sky turning dark. No one around could hear their cries for help at that time. Austin first tried to kayak to shore for help, but huge waves badly damaged his kayak. The boat took in water rapidly and flipped over (倾覆), and he soon lost his only oar (船桨) in the rough water. Realizing he was in deep trouble, Austin knew he had no choice but to swim back to land to raise the alarm.
He swam for four hours through shark-frequented waters, fighting against big waves. He kept swimming even when his body ached badly, as he only wanted to save his family. When he finally reached the beach, he was worn out. He collapsed (瘫倒) the moment his feet hit the sand, but he still stood up and ran two kilometres to the nearest phone to call for help. His call started a huge rescue operation, and the coastguards (海岸警卫队) soon found his mother and sisters unharmed. The members of the coastguard spoke highly of Austin, calling him a little hero.

I was lucky to grow up with a dad. My grandfather died when my dad was just a baby, and his mom didn’t remarry (再婚) until he was in high school. He grew up during the hard years of the 1930s and 1940s.
Instead of letting the hard times destroy him, my father became fiercely independent. He decided to create a better life for his own family. He didn’t just focus on money. He decided to give my sister and me the relationship he had never had. He wanted to be there for us all the time.
One of my favorite memories is him lying down beside me at night as I fell asleep. In bed, I would ask him about his past. I heard stories about waking up at 5 a.m. to deliver newspapers before walking to school. He told me about breaking windows with frozen newspapers because they were too heavy. He talked about coming to an empty house every day, fixing his own breakfast, and dealing with a difficult stepfather.
But he also told stories of 81 . He told me how selling his paper route gave him his first savings. He talked about a lucky conversation with a friend that led to a stranger offering him a full scholarship (奖学金). He arrived at college with a suitcase and less than $30.
Later, I learned about my great-grandfather, George. He was a man with a simple but powerful faith. My dad spent a summer with him, sitting on the ground and talking. “Come on, honey. Don’t be like that,” Mum said, looking at Jane worriedly in the car. “Anyone would think we were driving to the dentist’s and not a great castle for the weekend.”
Jane ignored her. London, friends, shops—she wanted all that, not a weekend learning French and history. She dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, but her mother suggested she spend half a term in France to study language and history. She thought neither of them had anything to do with fashion at all!
After one hour’s ride, they got to an 18th-century castle. Jane walked through the quiet halls alone. Most doors were closed, but one was slightly open. She pushed it gently and saw a room filled with shining dresses and jewelry. An old notebook on the desk quickly caught Jane’s eye and she couldn’t look away. It was old, but it was taken good care of.
“You have a good eye,” a soft voice said.
Jane turned to see a foreign lady smiling at her. She introduced herself as the curator (馆长). They began to talk, sharing ideas about the fashion industry, mostly in French. The curator’s rich knowledge left a deep impression on Jane.
“This notebook belonged to Madame Lee, the owner of the building and a fashion designer in her time,” she said, gently touching the cover. “In the past, women were rarely allowed to speak in public, so she decided to make their voices heard. To do this, she learned design, language and history and created bold (大胆的) designs.”
She went on to explain, “Fashion isn’t just about what’s hot. It has roots. You have to know its history.” Jane said nothing, but she held the notebook tightly.
As night fell, they had to leave. Her mother was waiting outside. Jane ran toward her and hugged her tightly. Jane said, “I think I finally understand why you brought me here. I have found my direction.”

2. She wanted to become a fashion designer
3. An old notebook on the desk

5. She learned design, language and history and created bold designs.
6. She will go to France to study language and history. Because she understands that fashion has roots and she needs to know its history to be a good fashion designer.(答案不唯一,推测合理即可)

Have you ever wished you could turn back time and do something differently? Maybe you’ve said something hurtful or failed a test. Everyone makes mistakes; the important thing is not to panic. Remember that messing up from time to time is part of being human.
Mistakes are important
When you mess something up, it’s easy to feel depressed about yourself. However, mistakes give your brain an opportunity to adjust what it’s doing and learn, so you get things right in the future. In fact, they are such an important part of being human that your body often knows that you have made them before you do. Scientists say when you make a mistake, like falling off a bike, your brain creates electrical activity. This sends a signal to the rest of your brain before you even hit the ground. Studies show these signals teach you to be more careful next time.
How can they help?
Making mistakes teaches you resilience, which means being able to bounce back (恢复) from disappointments or challenges. England footballer Lauren Hemp, who won the women’s Euros with the Lionesses this summer, says sometimes the team makes“mistake after mistake” in matches, but this just makes them more determined to play better. “Even when things aren’t going our way, we can still try to turn it around,” she says. What seems like a disaster at the time can sometimes be funny afterwards, so next time if you say the wrong thing in class, you could ____________.
Face up to failures
The best way to learn from your mistakes is to face up to them, says Professor Pragya Agarwal. Try to feel comfortable when things go wrong. It might feel like a strange way to deal with failure, but it’s “a more positive way forward”, she explains. This is because you often feel embarrassed by your mistakes, so you try to hide them from others, which makes you more likely to repeat them. When you’ re not being hard on yourself, it’s easier to learn and this helps you do things differently next time, Agarwal says.

Why?

3.Why is taking part in the projects good for people according to Sabrina Romanoff?
4.What do Citizen science projects encourage people to do?
5.In The Big Garden Bird-watch project, how does the result people get help scientists?
6.What does taking part in citizen science projects mean to Nick Wilson?

Why?

2.Did Lucy use her own life experiences to write the story?
3.What does the underlined word “mistake” in paragraph 2 refer to?
4.How is Anne’s childhood life on the farm?
5.What can be filled in Ben’s review? (No more than 6 words)

1.The writer had a mixed feeling about his Dad’s plan, didn’t he?
2.Why didn’t the writer notice that he had arrived at the campsite?
3.What did the writer probably do? Complete the sentence with no more than 8 words.

He often repeated George’s words to me: “Jill, when you have to run your head through a brick wall, start running and trust that there will be a hole.”
My dad’s stories were not just words. They became a part of me.
1. Did Jill’s grandfather die when her father was a baby?
2. What kind of parent did Jill’s father decide to be?
3. What examples show that Jill’s father lived a hard life?
4. Fill in the blank with one word in the sentence “But he also told stories of ______.”
5. What are the “brick walls” in the life of Jill’s father?
6. Jill described her father as “fiercely independent”. What other good qualities did Jill’s father have? Explain why.

1. Was Jane excited about visiting a castle at first?
2. What job did Jane want to do?
3. What attracted Jane most when she entered the room?
4. Why did the curator say the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?
5. How did Madame Lee make women’s voices heard?
6. What do you think Jane will do after going back? Why?

1. Do mistakes help the brain adjust and help people do things right later?
