A group of researchers at Germany's Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary
Anthropology has been trying to find out(41)
men tend to live shorter lives than
women.Their study examined over 1,000 animals to track down common evolutionarv
traits in species where one sex tends to live longer than the other. They discovcred that
(42).
genetics does seem to play a part, monogamy(一夫一妻制)and
child-rearing also affect lifespans.
In humans, women live an average of 5.4 years longer than men,but we're not the
only species (43)that happens.In fact,in 72 per cent of mammals,females
outlast their male counterparts by an average of 12 per cent.In birds, however,it's males
449
tend to live longer-by an average of five per cent in the majority of
species.
One of the leading explanations is chromosomes ()In mammals, females
have two X chromosomes, while males have one X and one Y chromosome. With only
one X chromosome, any harmful mutations (are more likely to have an impact,as
there isn't a second copy (45)
(make)up for it.(46).(compare)with
mammals, birds have reversed sex chromosomes.However,.not all bird species see
longer lifespans in males. The researchers think that mating might be another factor at
play,as birds generally tend to be monogamous, while only a small percentage of
mammals stick with one partner.
"Males often pay the price for reproduction,"said Dr Johanna Stark, the study's lead.
"To secure mates, they invest in certain traits and spend energy(47)(fight)rivais
which increases their risk of injury and shortens their lifespan."
The researchers also found that child-rearing seems to have an impact.48)
(ask)any parent and you'll know that bearing and raising children takes a lot of energy,
so you might expect the sex responsible for child-rearing to pay the price with a shorter
lifespan."Instead,we found (49)opposite-the caregiving sex often lives longer,"
said Stark."This seems especially true in species like primates, where the young remain
dependent for a long time."
齐一出五加女P池
Based on this,it would seem that being a loyal partner and a good parent hold the
key(50)】
a longer life for males-at least from evolution's point of view.

Our Online Behavior
In recent years, the Internet has become a particularly unstable place.Aggression on
social media is now commonplace. In a 2017 study of 4,000 people by the Pew Research
Center, four out of ten said they'd experienced harassment (online.
Does this growing aggression on social media give us a glimpse of our real human
51?Are we-at our core-belligerent (beasts?It's true that the leverf
public bitterness-especially online-is52.But as an
evolutionary
anthropologist,I don't believe that's because social media has unlocked our cruel human
instincts.
Over the past two million years,we have evolved from groups of apelike beings
53.with sticks and stones to the creators of cars, rockets, great works of art,
nations, and global economic systems. How did we do this? Our brains got bigger, and
our capacity for cooperation exploded. We are54 to cooperate,to create diverse
social relationships, and to solve problems together. This is the heritage that everyone in
the 21st century carries.
I would argue that the rise in online aggression is a product of our evolutionary
social skills, the social media55,and the specific political and economic context
in which we find ourselves. This explosive combination has opened up a space for more
and more people to 56 the flames of aggression and insult online.
We've all heard the expression "you are what you eat".But when it comes to our
behavior,a more appropriate expression may be "you are whom you.meet."How we
perceive, experience, and act in the world is57 by who and whar surround us on
a daily basis.This includes our families,communities,institutions,beliefs,and role
models. These sources of influence affect our neurobiology in subtle ways.Together, they
give humans what we call a58 reality, enabling us to cooperate effectively
-more so than most other beings.
But the "whom"in the expression "whom we meet"has been changing. We may
receive more information now from online sources than from physical social experiences.
We may hear more announcements from 24-hour news outlets than from conversations
with other humans. The ways we socially interact,59 on social media, are
6
increasing at time when we are more and more divided, both socially and economically
What may be the results of this?
_60,we have maintained harmony by displaying compassion and friendship, and
by developing connectedness when we get together. However,on social media, the
anonymity and lack of face-to-face interaction remove a crucial part of the equation of
human sociality. This opens the door to more frequent, and severe, displays of aggression.
Aggressive behavior-especially to those you don't have to confront face-to-face-is
easier than it's ever been. And for the aggressor, there are often no consequences.
IV.Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases
marked A,B,C and D.Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the
context.
The Case for Curiosity
As children,we would gaze up at the night sky, vividly imagining the thrill of
venturing into space as astronauts. We asked endless questions about the world around us,
driven by a natural curiosity.Yet as adults,we often walk beneath the same stars without
a second glance. Our childlike wonder is61 by routine, pressure, and the habit of
accepting things as they are.
The universe remains unchanged, its beauty and mystery as profound as ever.
62,instead of marveling at the unknown,we have grown accustomed to ignoring
it,treating the wonders of the world as ordinary and unworthy of our attention. What
transformed us from endlessly63children into impatient, unquestioning adults?
It can be 64 a single, frustrating phrase:"That's just how it is."
Time and again, our persistent inquiries were met with this65
reply.
Gradually,we 66 the belief that the world operates in a fixed, unchangeable way.
This convenient but empty answer protects us from the effort of thinking deeply, yet it
slowly 67our creativity and desire to explore.
Formal 68 has also contributed to this loss.In many systems,exam-oriented
learning and rote memorization have taken the place of real discovery.Curiosity is often
seen as a childish hobby, not a necessary skill for growth. To rebuild it,we must be brave
enough to seek knowledge that secms"69"-knowledge that brings joy rather than
practical gains.
We are also70 to make assumptions. While assumptions helped our ancestors
survive dangerous situations, they now prevent us from seeing new possibilities.Survival
alone cannot push humanity forward;curiosity can.As John A.Shedd wisely wrote:"A
ship in harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are for."Our71 is not merely to
stay comfortable,but to grow,to question,and to create.
Curiosity pushes us to re-examine what seems obvious, connect ideas that appear
unrelated, and imagine solutions others cannot see.It challenges our fixed thoughts and
inspires creative thinking that drives progress in every field. It opens doors to new worlds
and turns the impossible into reality,so a small, simple question today can become a
major_72_for humanity tomorrow.
After all,the sum of all human knowledge is only a single drop in the endless
73 of the unknown.Since every new discovery merely makes us comprehend
how much more we have yet to uncover,we can never74 exploring fearlessly if
we truly aspire to understand the intricate world better. The people who change the world
are not those who stop asking, but those who continue_75_longer than anyone else
around them.

To Mallerie Shirley and Christopher Pleasants, nothing felt "revolutionary"about
the way they were raising their two kids. Then a stranger called child protective services.
It started last November in Atlanta. With school closed on Election Day,the
couple's 6-year-old son,Jake, wanted to ride his scooter by himself to a nearby
playground while Mallerie and Christopher worked their tech jobs from home. They had
recently begun allowing Jake to play outside alone, and other kids and a group of parents
working a charity drive would be waiting for him at the park.
Permission granted,Jake strapped on his helmet, got on his scooter, and rode
one-third of a mile on a paved recreational path to the playground. On his way back,a
woman stopped him.She asked for his name, age, and where he lived."He felt like the

woman was just demanding answers,"Mallerie says."And then when she started
following him,it scared him."
Two days later,a caseworker from Georgia's Division of Family and Children
Services (DFCS)rang their doorbell. The caseworker said Jake was too young to be on
the path unsupervised."How old does he need to be?"Christopher asked."Like,13,"she
replied. He asked where that number came from."I'll have to look it up,"Christopher
recalls her saying. When he pressed further, she claimed that things aren't like they used
to be."People are weirder now."
"Then she informed me that she was going to interview the kids at their schools-
that she would come back later to look inside the house, make sure we had food, running
water,"Christopher says.
The family didn't lack basic necessities. But weeks later, they received a letter from
the agency.stating it had confirmed a finding of negleet against Mallerie. It was a letter
they had long dreaded.
"My fear has never been that Jake will be unsafe being out there by himself,"
Mallerie says."My fear has always been that the state will intervene."
This case was not just a random mistake by the system. It reflects a broader pattern:
Vague child-neglect laws, combined with a culture that increasingly believes children
need constant supervision, have expanded the government's reach into once-ordinary
parenting decisions, reshaping the boundaries of American childhood in the process.
76.Why did Jake ride his scooter to the playground alone?
A.His parents wanted to test his independence before school started
B.He refused to wait for the charity drive group to arrive.
C.He had a day off from school and his parents were working from home.
D.His parents were too busy with their tech jobs to accompany him.
77.What was the immediate reason why the stranger stopped Jake on his way back?
A.She witnessed Jake riding his scooter in a dangerous manner.
B.She believed a child of his age should not be unsupervised on the path.
C.She suspected Jake was lost because he could not answer her questions.
D.She was a caseworker conducting a routine inspection of the neighborhood.
78.According to the caseworker, what was theiprimary justification for her concern?
A.There were specific laws prohibiting children under t3 frem using the path.
B.The parents did not have adequate food or running water in the house.
C.Society has changed, and people have become more unpredictable.
D.Jake appeared frightened and unable to ride his scooter safely.?
79.
What is the main purpose of the final paragraph?
A.To argue that child neglect laws should be abolished immediately
B.To describe the specific steps parents must take to avoid state intervention
C.To suggest that this case represents a systemic issue affecting modern parenting.
D.To explain why children today require more supervision than in the past.

A good guide to good carbs:The glycemic index
If you have diabetes(糖尿病),you know all too well that when
you eat carbohydrates(a碳水化合物),your blood sugar goes up.

Low glycemic index(GI of 55 or less):Most fruits and vegetables, beans, minimally
processed grains,pasta,low-fat dairy foods,and nuts.
Moderate glycemic index(GI 56 to 69):White and sweet potatoes,corn,couscous,

"roller-coaster"indicate?
A.The digestion process takes a very long time to finish
B.High GI food makes people feel excited and happy.
C.Blood sugar levels go up and down very quickly.
D.Energy levels stay exactly the same for hours.
82.Whieh of the following meals would a person following a low-GI diet be advised to
avoid?.
A.A side dish of corn or white rice.
B.A sandwich made with whole-grain bread.
C.A breakfast consisting of bran flakes with milk
D.A meal including pasta or bulgur instead of potatoes.

A century and a half before Apple marketed iPads to schools,in 1857,Harvard
professor Evangelinos Apostolides Sophocles held a bonfire (of newly introduced
"blue books",pen-and-paper exam booklets meant to replace oral recitations. These
booklets would trouble generations of students before giving way to computerized testing.
Now,blue-book sales have more than doubled from 2022 to 2024,and oral exams are
seeing a comeback.
From high school to university, teachers are rethinking the role of technology in
their classrooms.Laura Lomas,a literature professor at Rutgers, requires attendance at
plays with changing endings, assigns oral presentations instead of slides.Port Brock,a
high-school English teacher in New York, insists on handwritten exercises in class.Such
reversal is spreading.A 2023 survey by Intelligent found that 66%of high-school and
college instructors were changing assignments to make them harder to complete with a
few clicks.
The reason is not just ChatGPT and the mass cheating it makes possible.Teachers
also point to students'wandering eyes during lessons. In 2025,56%of educators said
laptops, tablets or desktops are a major source of distracted attention, according to a
EdWeek Research Centre survey.
Cheating itself is not new, though AI has intensified it.Studies have shown that
classroom teeh-can help pupils leamn math concepts, but evidence of improved outcomes
in other areas is thin.By contrast, the benefits handwriting offers for cognition (are
gaining new respect, even beyond the humanities.A computer science teacher at Hunter
College High School in New York recently brought back handwriting for coding
assignments because it helps with memory as well as critical-thinking.
But not everyone who wants to go old-school can.Derek Vaillant,a historian notes
there is a growing agreement among university educators that teachers need to "get back

to basics"by prioritizing original,in-person,pen-and-paper exams.Yet large public
universities are not providing resources up to the challenge by hiring enough teaching
assistants. The university administrators,he says, are"speaking out of both sides of their
mouths'”.
Among parents,it is the wealthy and educated who want less tech in the classroom.
A Pew Research Centre report in December 2024 found that 58%of Hispanic and 53%
of black teenagers reported being on the internet almost constantly, compared with 37%
of white teenagers. The digital divide has flipped.
Theses changes require rethinking the purpose of time in the classroom. At Hunter,
an 11th-grade English teacher assigned five literature responses to be written by hand,
each taking up a whole period. In the past that was not considered a good use of a
teacher's effort.But today,with digital heat-seeking missiles soaking up attention,maybe
the best thing we can do in the classroom is give young people the gift of quiet,
undistracted time.
83.According to Paragraphs 2-4,which of the following is a reason for the reversal
towards traditional methods?
A.Traditional methods reduce the burden of lesson planning.
B.Teachers find tech devices inefficient in their teaching.
C.Handwriting proved to be effective in boosting creativity.
D.Technology causes distraction and academic dishonesty.
84.What is Derek Vaillant's attitude toward university administrators?
A.Critical
B.Doubtful
C.Neutral
D.Supportive
85.What can be inferred from the statement "The digital divide has flipped"in
Paragraph 6?
A.The digital gap between different ethnic groups has been completely bridged.
B.White teenagers now have more access to the Internet than minority teenagers.
C.The group that used to lack digital access is now overexposed to digital devices
D.Wealthy parents are less concerned about the impact of screen time on children.
86.Which of the following would be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.The Return of Classroom Disciplines B.Learning like the Ancients
C.Teachers'Fear of Teehnology
D.Technology Disturbs Classroom Focus

television.More millennials say they would prefer to meet their favourite podcast host
than a beloved film or TV star.Overall, about 40%of Americans listen to podcasts and
half of them consider podcasts to be more truthful than traditional news media.
Hollywood is listening.
,says Helen Hoehne,president of
the Golden Globes. In 2026 the Globes will become the first major film and television
award ceremony to honour podcasting.A new category-which debuts in the 83rd
edition of the awards on January 11h-will recognize the best podcast of the year.
With over 4.5 million podcasts worldwide, choosing a winner will not be easy. The
Globes have shortlisted the top 25 based on audience size and market presence, including
news and true-crime shows,as well as programs hosted by Tucker Carlson.
88.The word "podcast",to describe downloadable audio shows,
was coined in 2004.Since then the format has gone from an emerging medium to a
cultural force. In 2026 some 600m people will listen to a podcast.
The new category also reflects the link between podcasts and the screen.Hit TV
shows such as"Severance"now offer companion podcasts including interviews with the
cast and crew.89.Some popular podcasts have been adapted for
television."The Dropout",about the rise and fall of Theranos,a blood-testing startup,
became an award-winning drama.
Meanwhile, podcasts themselves are growing more like television.Hosts share
video versions of their shows to expand their audience, and time spent watching video
podcast content on Spotify rose by 44%in 2024.Some fans worry the form will turn into
yet another set of people making cheap TV.
Yet the shift towards video is part of a wider change in the media business.Just as
online filmmakers are shaking up television by building fan bases to rival streaming
platforms,a short-video platform has emerged as the leading destination for podcasts,
drawing a billion viewers a month by 'one couint.

In this context,
the Golden Globes'decision to pay attention speaks volumes.
