Are you a high school student who loves to be outdoors and likes to experience new challenges, learn new skills and meet new people? WTA offers first-time participants (参与者) front country trips and returning students have the choice to go on trips in the back country.
Front Country Trips
Our front country trips provide chances for people to experience projects near the ocean, in the Cascade Mountains and in northeast Washington. Our trips also provide you with experienced leaders, a great project, some camping tents, sleeping bags and all your meals for the week.
Advanced Back Country Trips
On these trips you will be backpacking to the work site and will have a chance to develop your trail and leadership skills with the help of a WTA leader.
Trip Details
In 2026, trip fees for WTA members will be $195 for the first trip and $145 for each additional trip. Non-members will pay an extra $40 for their first trip and can be members in the second trip. Because our trips are popular, please submit (上交) your payment and application within two weeks. If a trip is full and you would like to be added to the waiting list, please call us at 206/625-1367 or email trail-teams@wta.org.

Powerlifting, a strength sport where people try to lift the most weight possible, is often seen as a sport for the young and athletes. But Faith O’Reilly, an 82-year-old grandma from Colorado, is ready to challenge this idea. She’ll soon get to show her abilities at a national competition.
Born in St. Louis, O’Reilly moved with her family to Des Moines. She then attended the University of Iowa, where she discovered weightlifting. “While I was in law school, I met some people who were doing weightlifting, and they invited me to go to a powerlifting meet,” she said. “I watched it and thought, ‘Well, I can do that.’” And she indeed did it.
O’Reilly did well, even winning some state championships. However, she had to move to St. Paul, Minnesota for work, which resulted in her having less and less time to practice, finally leading her to drop lifting completely.
After she retired (退休) in 2007, O’Reilly rediscovered her love for the sport. She had visited a small town called Saguache in Colorado with her granddaughter and loved it. So she decided to live there. With more free time and green landscapes, she started lifting again. She even set up her own gym with special safety bars, so she can train anytime she wants. Now, she is among great older lifters like 95-year-old Catherine Kuehn and 81-year-old Nora Langdon.
O’Reilly believes lifting is good for everyone. “It’s good for your body. As you get older, you may have problems with bone density and losing muscle tone (肌张力),” she says, “so this helps you stay fit.”
O’Reilly last competed at the 2024 Summer Showdown and Team Cup in Colorado, where she was the oldest competitor. “Besides working out, it gives you the chance to be part of an athletic adventure. The people here are very open and friendly, “O’Reilly says about competing. “You make many friends and get support.”

When living or travelling in another country, we notice the differences between cultures before seeing the similarities. At first, some differences are easy to notice. Over time, however, there are some surprising similarities between how people in the UK and China communicate. Indeed, people in both countries often complain about having to read what local people really mean, because it is often different from what is said.
In the UK, outsiders often get confused when they realize that a person saying something rude is actually showing love. In situations like this, context (语境) is everything. In China, outsiders must infer most meaning from context and from what is not said, rather than from what is said. You also need to read between the lines. Otherwise, misunderstandings may happen.
Both the British and Chinese try to avoid conflict (冲突), which greatly influences how people communicate. The British will do everything to avoid conflict. For example, they will probably tell the waiter it was lovely even when they are served with poor quality food. In business, a British business partner who is deeply unhappy with your plan will probably say “there are just a couple of small problems.”
Chinese communication shows a very similar way of preventing conflict. They often avoid talking about challenges, mistakes, or problems directly. Instead, people talk about working towards further goals, rather than directly say that the situation is far from satisfactory. Chinese people like to keep a sense of harmony (和谐) within all environments, and so avoid open criticism (批评) of each other. For example, instead of saying a person is rude, a Chinese person might say he is “very confident”. In this sense, the British and Chinese can understand each other better because both value harmony.
38. What does the phrase “read between the lines” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. To read every word carefully. B. To understand the hidden meaning.
C. To write between two lines of text. D. To translate a foreign language.
39. How do British and Chinese people communicate when they are unhappy with something?
A. They use indirect or polite words. B. They stay silent and say nothing.
C. They express their anger directly. D. They complain to a third person.
40. What can you infer when a British business partner says, “There are just a couple of small problems in your plan”?
A. He is very satisfied with the plan. B. He is unhappy with the whole plan.
C. The plan has two small problems. D. The plan can be carried out at once.
41. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Avoid Conflict in Communication
B. Cultural Differences Between the UK and China
C. Similarities in British and Chinese Communication
D. The Importance of Guessing Meaning from Context
D
Education used to be done only by humans. Teachers gave lessons, checked students’ grades, and managed classroom environments. However, the rise of digital technology led to the development of online learning platforms (平台), digital classrooms, and online courses. And when we add AI (artificial intelligence), education can be brought to a completely new level. ①
Every student has their own learning style, speed, and set of strengths and weaknesses. Traditional education systems often find it hard to meet each student’s needs because of class size, limited resources, and the one-size-fits-all method. ②AI can change that. With AI-driven learning platforms, students can learn through materials at their own speed. For example, platforms like Coursera, Khan Academy, and Duolingo use AI to see how the students are doing and then offer content, quizzes, and exercises for them.
③Traditionally, teachers are often busy with tasks such as grading, lesson planning, and tracking student progress. AI can take over some of these tasks, giving teachers more time to work directly with students. For example, AI tools can grade homework, exams, and quizzes much faster than humans. This is especially valuable for large classes where grading might take days or even weeks. Moreover, AI can help teachers with lesson planning by reading a lot of materials and suggesting resources that best match student learning needs.
With AI, students who have trouble with language disabilities have more chances to receive education. AI-powered tools, such as Google Classroom and Microsoft Word, are developed to support students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADHD. ④Text-to-speech, real-time translation, and sign language identification technologies can help students who face challenges in traditional educational environments.
Looking ahead, AI’s role in education will continue to develop. As technology improves, we can expect AI to become part of learning platforms, making education more interesting and fun.
42. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. AI can help teachers grade homework faster.
B. Traditional schools are perfect for every student.
C. AI allows students to learn at their own speed.
D. Online platforms like Coursera are free for all students.
43. How does the writer support the idea that AI helps teachers?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling stories. D. By showing surveys.
44. Where can we put the following sentence in the passage?
Moreover, AI tools are making it easier for students who can’t see or hear well.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
45. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce famous online learning platforms.
B. To explain how teachers use AI in daily life.
C. To show the important role of AI in education.
D. To discuss problems of traditional education.

Snow forests make up about 30% of the world’s total forest areas. These wonderful woodlands are not as famous as the Amazon rainforests, but they are just as important.
Snow forests are found in the far north of the world, in areas that are quite cold and usually have a lot of snowfall. They lie across parts of Canada, China, Finland, Japan, Norway, Russia, Sweden and America. Snow forests have very cold winters that can last up to six months. But even so, they are home to many kinds of animals, including foxes, mice and wolves. In the US and Canada, as many as five billion birds from more than three hundred species live in the snow forests in the breeding (繁殖) season.
These woodlands perform an important job: helping to take in harmful gases. The gases are given off by burning coal, oil and gas, which can cause climate change. However, snow forests are facing several problems. Trees are being cut down faster and faster for their wood, which can be used for building. Some forests are being cleared to make space for new roads and houses, or to allow coal and gas industries to grow. What’s worse, as the world gets warmer, Canada and Russia have seen terrible fires spread through the forests.
Luckily, environmental and wildlife groups around the world are working hard to protect snow forests. This means that cutting down trees is controlled in some areas and the forests are seen as areas of special scientific interest. When wood is needed, planting plans and careful forest management help to reduce the human influence so that the forests are managed in a way that they can survive and regrow.
56. What percent of world forests are snow forests?

My progress in English
My three-year middle school life will be over. Looking back, I want to share my progress in middle school with you.
I have made great progress in English. In Grade 7, I was weak in English and afraid of speaking. But now, I can express myself freely in class. How did I make it? First, I read English stories every morning for 20 minutes. Second, I wrote diaries in English and asked my teacher for help. Third, I joined the English corner to practice speaking with others.
I feel very proud of my progress. It tells me that hard work pays off. Also, I become more confident and active in learning. I believe I will do better in the future.
