One summer day, Tom told Huck about his idea. “Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck. “It's hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted houses.” “Who hid it?” “Robbers (强盗). You can find a box with some dollars in it, or a chest full of diamonds.” So, on Saturday afternoon the boys went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place. And the boys were very frightened. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped. “What is it?” whispered Huck, going white with fright. “Keep still! There's someone downstairs.” The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard with a wide sombrero hat. The other was dirty and unpleasant-looking. The boys shook with fear. Then the Spaniard spoke. It was Injun Joe. Tom and Huck felt even more frightened. The men sat down on the floor and ate. They then lay down and fell asleep. When the two men woke up, the stranger said, “It's time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery?” “Let's keep $30 each and leave the rest here.” The dirty man went to the fireplace and moved a stone. The 72-year-old then planned to go to China on foot. This meant she would travel about 22,000 kilometers and walk through 15 countries. The journey would be full of challenges, but she wasn’t afraid. The traveler carried only a bag. “I also have a lot of interests with me,” she said. On August 29, 2024, she finally set foot on China’s land. Cammarota’s trip was encouraged by Marco Polo. The Italian explorer traveled to China along the ancient Silk Road more than 700 years ago. For her, the journey was more than following Marco Polo’s footsteps. She wanted to see what China’s Belt and Road Initiative (“一带一路”倡议) had brought to the land. By sharing her experiences, she now hopes her travels will help people in the West see the true beauty of China. Cammarota’s interest in China began more than 20 years ago. A Chinese student stayed in her home and told her a lot about the country’s rich cultural heritage (文化遗产). Cammarota plans to spend two years in China. She will visit key stops along the ancient Silk Road: first Kashgar (喀什), Dunhuang, and then the historic city of Xi’an. After that she’ll visit Suzhou, the city described as the “Venice of the East” by Marco Polo. She plans to end her trip in Beijing to mark the 750th anniversary of Marco Polo’s arrival to China. Cammarota calls herself an ambassador (大使) of cultural exchange and a modern-day Marco Polo. “I want people to know about the Silk Road,” she said. “I also want to send a message to women my age: It’s never too late to go for your dreams.” 58. What did Vienna Cammarota carry on her way to China? A. A bag. B. Italian food. C. Interesting maps. D. Some silk. 59. How long did it take Cammarota to reach China from Venice? A. Less than 2 years. B. About 2.5 years. C. More than 4 years. D. About 20 years. 60. Which of the following probably shows Cammarota’s travelling route (线路) in China? A. B. C. D. 61. What can we learn about Vienna Cammarota from the text? A. She was nervous about how difficult the journey would be. B. She wants to encourage young women to follow their dreams. C. She became interested in China after studying Chinese in China. D. She hopes to build a better understanding between the East and West. D The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. At its narrowest point, it is only about 33 kilometers wide. However, this small passage is one of the most important shipping routes in the world. About 20% of the world’s oil passes through it every day. Oil from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates must travel through this strait to reach global markets. For this reason, the Strait of Hormuz is often called the world’s “oil tap.” Since February 28, 2026, military conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran has severely disrupted this vital waterway. Although the strait is not physically blocked, the threat of attack has made most oil tankers avoid crossing it. Insurance companies have also stopped covering ships that enter the area. As a result, the strait is effectively closed. Oil producers in the region have been forced to cut output by at least 10 million barrels per day—the largest supply disruption in history. The impact on oil prices has been dramatic. Before the crisis, Brent crude oil cost about $71 per barrel. By March 9, 2026, the price had surged to $94 per barrel. At one point, prices briefly approached $120. The International Energy Agency (IEA) warned that if the closure continues, oil prices could go even higher. In response, IEA member countries agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from emergency reserves to help stabilize the market. The effects are being felt far beyond the Middle East. Asia receives about 84% of the oil shipped through the Strait of Hormuz. Countries like China, India, Japan, and South Korea are especially vulnerable. Higher oil prices mean higher costs for gasoline, heating, and everyday products. The IEA noted that flight cancellations and disruptions to gas supplies have already begun to hurt the global economy. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz shows how a conflict in one small area can affect the entire world. Whether the strait will reopen soon remains uncertain. Much depends on how long the military conflict continues. For now, the world watches and waits, hoping for a peaceful resolution to a crisis that touches every corner of the globe. 62. According to the passage, why is the Strait of Hormuz called the world’s “oil tap”? A. Because it is shaped like a tap. B. Because about 20% of the world’s oil flows through it. C. Because it is the only place where oil is produced. D. Because it was built by oil companies. 63. What does the author mean by saying the strait is “effectively closed” in paragraph 2? A. The strait is physically blocked by ships or barriers. B. Iran has built a wall across the waterway. C. Ships are too afraid to go through, even though it is not blocked. D. The strait has been permanently closed by international law. 64. Which is the right structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. 65. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage? A. How to Become an Oil Trader B. A Small Waterway That Powers the World C. The History of Iran and the United States D. At the table sat the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Dormouse. They were having a tea party. There were many cups and plates, but no one was eating or drinking. “No room! No room!” they cried when they saw Alice. “There is plenty of room,” said Alice, and she sat down in a big chair. The Mad Hatter looked at Alice and asked her a riddle, “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” Alice thought hard, but she could not answer. “I give up,” she said. “What's the answer?” “I haven't the slightest idea,” said the Hatter. Then the March Hare took out his watch. He looked at it angrily and then dipped it into his tea. “It was the best butter,” he said sadly. Alice looked at the watch. “That's a strange way to keep time,” she said. “Time is a person,” said the Hatter. “If you are friends with Time, he will let the clock do whatever you want.
