Plants need many different minerals in order to grow strong. Learning about what types of matter plants grow best in can help farmers discover what they should put in compost (堆肥) when creating new soil to grow fruits and vegetables in. Materials: Green bean seeds, some containers, some clean water, a marker, potting soil, waste paper, left-over pieces of fruits and vegetables, such as orange or banana skins, the centers of apples, vegetable ends like carrots, etc. Steps of the experiment: 1. Label the containers: “Soil/Control”, “Paper”, “Left-over”, and “Mixed Waste” (Waste Paper & Left-over). 2. Fill the container with different types of materials. 3. Plant the seeds in the pots as directed on the back of the seed package. 4. Water the plants with clean water. Do not use plant food. 5. Place the plants in a warm, sunny place outdoors. You should not keep them in the house because they may attract flies. In fact, it may even help the waste turn into soil. 6. Water the plants daily and record their growth height on a chart as below. PLANT GROWTH CHART Group Time Soil/Control Paper Left-over Mixed Waste Day 1 0cm 0cm 0 cm 0cm Day 2 0 cm 0cm 0 cm 0cm Day 3 0.4cm 0 cm 0.2cm 0.1cm Day 4 1.0cm 0.1cm 0.7cm 0.3cm Day 5 1.8cm 0.1cm 1.5cm 0.6cm *Waste: “Paper”, “Left-over”, and “Mixed Waste”. 1. What is the main purpose of this experiment? A. To find out why waste turns into soil fastest. B. To see which material helps plants grow best. C. To prove what plants can grow without compost. D. To compare how much water different plants need. 2. How many experimental groups were set up besides the control group? A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six. 3. What do the results in the chart show? A. Mixed-Waste plants grew tallest of all. B. Soil plants hit 1.8 cm, beating all wastes. C. Every group matched at 0.8 cm on Day 5. D. Paper plants cleared 1.5 cm and outgrew Soil. B 2. A 3. 根据第一段“Learning about what types of matter plants grow best in can help farmers discover what they should put in compost (堆肥) when creating new soil to grow fruits and vegetables in. (了解植物在哪种物质中长得最好,可以帮助农民知道制作新土壤时应该在堆肥里放什么)”可知,实验目的是看哪种材料最有助于植物生长。故选B。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据Steps of the experiment中步骤1“Label the containers: “Soil/Control”, “Paper”, “Left-over”, and “Mixed Waste” (Waste Paper & Left-over). (在容器上贴上标签:“土壤/对照组”、“纸”、“剩余果蔬”和“混合垃圾”(废纸和剩余物))”可知,除对照组外还有三组。故选A。 B。 B I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree. It’s a special tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of people nearby. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden. The black walnut also gives off a chemical substance as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several plants. There have been many new plants that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they died. What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important since they attract beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress. Have I thought of moving this giant pain out of my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it. Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before the sun rises. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves. Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing? Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut tree offers cover to wildlife and a reminder to me. 4. Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden? A. To protect the injured skull. B. To avoid being hit by the nuts. C. To prevent herself from sunburn. D. To protect herself from falling over. 5. What is the tree’s survival strategy? A. It accepts new plant varieties. B. It attracts beneficial pollinators. C. It lets out poison to drive away pests. D. It produces a chemical deadly to some plants. 6. What is the writer’s attitude towards the walnut tree? A. Pleased. B. Conflicted. C. Curious. D. Disapproving. 7. The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ________. A. It’s better to accept than to resist B. It’s better to act than to think C. It’s better to compete than to give up. D. It’s better to protect than to destroy. B 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第二段中“In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of people nearby.(在9月下旬或10月初,像棒球一样坚硬的坠落的果实会威胁到附近人的头骨)”以及“and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.(至于我,我在花园里干活时会戴上自行车头盔)”可知,作者在花园里工作时戴自行车头盔是为了避免被坚果砸到。 根据第三段中“The black walnut also gives off a chemical substance as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several plants.(黑核桃树还会释放一种化学物质作为竞争策略。它对几种植物有毒)”可知,这棵树的生存策略是产生一种对某些植物致命的化学物质。故选D。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.(我和一棵黑核桃树有着18年的爱恨情仇)”以及最后一段“Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires.(就像任何一段好的关系一样,我永远不会满意。我被这棵树困住了,所以我会倾听它的需求,给它所需的空间)”可知,作者对这棵黑核桃树的态度是矛盾的。故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut tree offers cover to wildlife and a reminder to me.(我被这棵树困住了,所以我会倾听它的需求,给它所需的空间。作为回报,我的核桃树为野生动物提供了庇护,也给了我一个提醒)”可知,作者从树那里得到的提醒是接受比抗拒更好。故选A。 C With a sun hat made of solar panels, a tea picking robot snakes its way through rows of Longing tea bushes in Hangzhou’s West Lake scenic spot, East China’s Zhejiang province. The 550-kg robot picker is a godsend for local tea planters this season. The upcoming Qingming Festival, which falls on Wednesday this year, is the major harvest period for early spring tea, and the local tea gardens are quite understaffed these days. Longing tea, also known as West Lake Dragon Well tea, is a kind of green tea. “The beautiful forms of a bud with one leaf or a bud with two leaves are often acknowledged as quality tea. And the picking work of such tea leaves has relied largely on hand-operated work, very difficult to be replaced by machines,” said Jia Jiangming, developer of the robot. However, most of the tea pickers in the production areas of Longjing tea are all in their 60s, few are in their 50s, and young people are not willing to land jobs in the industry. “If so, the Longjing tea industry may face great embarrassment when there remains nobody to help pick the leaves,” Jia said when explaining why his team started to develop tea-picking robots as early as 2019. Jia’s team introduced the model of convolution neural networks (卷积神经网络) in deep learning, enabling the robot to study many tea tree bud and leaf image data. Using binocular stereo (双目立体) vision, the robot can position where the target bud and leaf are, cut them off accurately, and then suck the leaves into its basket. Earlier this year, Jia’s robot helper developed into its fifth generation. The upgraded robot’s overall tea-picking success rate rose from 40 percent to 60 percent. “The new generation robot can do as well as a human tea picker,” said Chen Jianneng, another researcher of the team, adding that though the robot is still in its trial operation, they plan to improve its practicability, thus allowing the tea industry to enjoy benefits brought by modern mechanization in the coming future. 8. Why is there a lack of human tea pickers in the Longjing tea industry? A. Because machinery has taken the place of human tea pickers. B. Because the tea-leaf picking work can only be done by humans. C. Because human tea pickers are not capable of picking the target tea leaves. D. Because the young generation are not interested in the demanding job. 9. What can we learn about the robot tea-leaf picker? A. It can suck the damaged leaves into its basket. B. It can increase the quality of the early spring. C. It can help pick tea leaves accurately and intelligently. D. It can reach a higher tea-picking success rate than humans. 10. What does Chen Jianneng think of the new generation robot? A. The robot’s picking efficiency has been greatly increased. B. The robot cannot be put into use for it hasn’t been tested yet. C. The benefits of the robot are being enjoyed by the tea industry. D. The robot still needs improvements before coming into common use. 11. What is the best title of this text? A. Robot Joins Longjing Tea Harvest B. The Newest Robot Picker Enjoys Popularity C. Advanced Technology Is Used in Tea Industry D. Longjing Tea-Leaf Picking Work Faces Challenge 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第二段““The beautiful forms of a bud with one leaf or a bud with two leaves are often acknowledged as quality tea. And the picking work of such tea leaves has relied largely on hand-operated work, very difficult to be replaced by machines,” said Jia Jiangming, developer of the robot.”(该机器人的开发人员贾江明说:“一片叶子的花蕾或两片叶子的芽的美丽形状通常被认为是优质茶叶。而这种茶叶的采摘工作在很大程度上依赖手工操作,很难被机器取代。”。)及第三段“However, most of the tea pickers in the production areas of Longjing tea are all in their 60s, few are in their 50s, and young people are not willing to land jobs in the industry.”(然而,龙井茶产区的采茶工人大多都是60多岁,50多岁的人很少,年轻人也不愿意在这个行业找到工作。) 根据第四段“Using binocular stereo (双目立体) vision, the robot can position where the target bud and leaf are, cut them off accurately, and then suck the leaves into its basket.”(利用双目立体视觉,机器人可以定位目标芽和叶子的位置,准确地将它们切掉,然后将叶子吸入篮子。)及第五段““The new generation robot can do as well as a human tea picker,” said Chen Jianneng, another researcher of the team”(该团队的另一位研究员陈建能说:“新一代机器人的性能和人类的采茶者一样好。”) 根据最后一段““The new generation robot can do as well as a human tea picker,” said Chen Jianneng, another researcher of the team, adding that though the robot is still in its trial operation, they plan to improve its practicability, thus allowing the tea industry to enjoy benefits brought by modern mechanization in the coming future.”(该团队的另一位研究员陈建能说:“新一代机器人的性能和人类的采茶机一样好。” 根据第一段“The 550-kg robot picker is a godsend for local tea planters this season. The upcoming Qingming Festival, which falls on Wednesday this year, is the major harvest period for early spring tea, and the local tea gardens are quite understaffed these days.”(这个重达550公斤的机器人采摘机在这个季节对当地的茶园主来说是天赐之物。 故选A项。 D It is generally believed that coffee relates to increased watchfulness and faster heart rates, so people with atrial fibrillation (AF) — the most common irregular (不规则的) heartbeat condition — are often told to avoid it. However, a new study suggests that advice may need a rethink. Researchers followed 200 people in the US, Canada, and Australia who were about to go through an operation for AF. All were present or former coffee drinkers. Half agreed to avoid coffee for six months; the other half agreed to drink at least one cup per day. Across the six months, the researchers tracked AF recurrences (复发) lasting over 30 seconds. In the coffee-drinker group, 47 percent had suffered from AF, compared with 64 percent of those who didn’t. “The results astounded us,” says Christopher Wong, a professor from the University of Adelaide in Australia. “Unlike traditional wisdom, we found the coffee drinkers experienced an obvious reduction in AF compared to those who avoided coffee and caffeine (咖啡因).” Lots of explanations for the finding are possible. We know coffee can improve exercise performance, which could protect against AF. It also contains something acting to help reduce high blood pressure, a risk factor for AF. While it doesn’t show the direct cause and effect, the study adds some valuable evidence to the connection between coffee and heart conditions. “It makes sense for health care professionals to let their AF patients consider experimenting with caffeinated drinks that they may enjoy, such as caffeinated tea and coffee,” says Marcus, a medical researcher from the University of California, San Francisco. This is the first attempt to look at the connection between caffeinated drinks and the happening of AF. The researchers now want to look at the effects on those who weren’t coffee drinkers to begin with, and how other caffeine drinks might have an influence. 12. How did the researchers make the finding? A. By explaining reasons. B. By undertaking comparisons. C. By making interviews. D. By reviewing former studies. 13. What does the underlined word “astounded” probably mean in Paragraph 3? A. Shocked. B. Troubled. C. Discouraged. D. Uplifted. 14. What does Marcus think of recommending caffeinated drinks to AF patients? A. Impractical. B. Uncertain. C. Influential. D. Reasonable. 15. What may the researchers do in the future? A. Change measuring tools. B. Apply the latest findings. C. Broaden research subjects. D. Collect indirect evidences. B 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第二段中的“Half agreed to avoid coffee for six months; the other half agreed to drink at least one cup per day. Across the six months, the researchers tracked AF recurrences (复发) lasting over 30 seconds. In the coffee-drinker group, 47 percent had suffered from AF, compared with 64 percent of those who didn’t. (一半人同意六个月内不喝咖啡;另一半人同意每天至少喝一杯。在这六个月里,研究人员追踪了持续30秒以上的房颤复发情况。喝咖啡的组别中,47%的人出现了房颤,而不喝咖啡的组别这一比例为64%)”可知,研究人员将研究对象分为两组做对比实验,通过对比两组的房颤复发数据得出研究发现。故选B项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第一段中的“It is generally believed that coffee relates to increased watchfulness and faster heart rates, so people with atrial fibrillation (AF) — the most common irregular (不规则的) heartbeat condition — are often told to avoid it. 故选A项。 根据第四段中的““It makes sense for health care professionals to let their AF patients consider experimenting with caffeinated drinks that they may enjoy, such as caffeinated tea and coffee,” says Marcus, a medical researcher from the University of California, San Francisco. (医疗从业者让他们的房颤患者考虑尝试自己喜欢的含咖啡因饮品,比如含咖啡因的茶和咖啡,这是合理的)”可推知,Marcus认为向房颤患者推荐含咖啡因饮品是合理的。故选D项。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“The researchers now want to look at the effects on those who weren’t coffee drinkers to begin with, and how other caffeine drinks might have an influence.(研究人员现在想要研究该饮品对原本就不喝咖啡的人的影响,以及其他含咖啡因饮品可能产生的作用)”可知,研究人员未来会拓宽研究对象,将原本不喝咖啡的人纳入研究,同时研究其他含咖啡因饮品的影响。 Scrolling through social media often makes us feel left behind by others’ seemingly perfect lives. While admiration for others’ achievements is natural, constant comparison can harm your confidence. Here are practical solutions: ____16____ It’s hard to compare yourself to others if you’re crystal clear about your personal values. For example, if family time matters most, don’t measure yourself against career-driven people. Write down what success means to you and revisit the list whenever envy strikes. Replace comparison with curiosity. When seeing others’ achievements, ask “What skills can I learn from them?”. A classmate’s high scores could inspire better study methods rather than self-doubt. ____17____ Be selective about social media. Social media can be both a blessing (恩赐) and a curse, depending on how you use it. ____18____ Follow those sharing real struggles and positive messages instead. Taking care of what you see on social media can help keep you calm. Set daily time limits for social media. ____19____ Activities like hiking, cooking with family, or quiet reading build real happiness that no “likes” can replace. Physical world connections reduce screen addiction. Practice gratitude to break the comparison cycle. Each night, write three things you’re thankful for — a good grade, a friend’s kindness, or sunny weather. ____20____ Remember, someone else’s success doesn’t erase yours. Run your own race guided by your values. Start building mental strength today! A. Develop your own understanding of success. B. Real fulfillment comes from offline experiences. C. Establish measurable goals for self-development. D. This mindset turns anxiety into chances for growth. E. Social media requires strict time management strategies. F. Unfollow accounts showing unrealistic beauty or wealth. G. This simple habit trains your brain to focus on existing blessings. A 17. D 18. F 19. B 20. 根据下文“It’s hard to compare yourself to others if you’re crystal clear about your personal values. For example, if family time matters most, don’t measure yourself against career-driven people. Write down what success means to you and revisit the list whenever envy strikes.(如果你对自己的个人价值观了如指掌,就很难再去和别人比较。例如,如果家庭时光对你最重要,就不要拿自己和以事业为导向的人比较。写下成功对你的意义,每当嫉妒袭来时,就重温这份清单。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是明确个人价值观以避免比较。选项A“Develop your own understanding of success.(形成自己对成功的理解。)” 故选A。 When seeing others’ achievements, ask “What skills can I learn from them?”. A classmate’s high scores could inspire better study methods rather than self-doubt.(用好奇心代替比较。当看到别人的成就时,问问自己“我能从他们身上学到什么技能?”。同学的高分可以激励你寻找更好的学习方法,而不是陷入自我怀疑。)”可知,上文讲述的是用好奇心代替比较,不要陷入自我怀疑。选项D“This mindset turns anxiety into chances for growth.(这种心态能将焦虑转化为成长的机会。)” 【18题详解】 根据上文“Be selective about social media. Social media can be both a blessing(恩赐)and a curse, depending on how you use it.(有选择地使用社交媒体。社交媒体是福也是祸,取决于你如何使用它。)”可知,上文建议选择性使用社交媒体。选项F“Unfollow accounts showing unrealistic beauty or wealth.(取消关注那些展示不切实际的美貌或财富的账号)”延续上文内容,自然引出空后的“Follow those sharing real struggles and positive messages instead.(转而关注那些分享真实奋斗和积极信息的人。)” 【19题详解】 根据下文“Activities like hiking, cooking with family, or quiet reading build real happiness that no “likes” can replace. Physical world connections reduce screen addiction.(像徒步旅行、和家人一起做饭或安静阅读这样的活动,能带来真实的快乐,这是任何“点赞”都无法替代的。现实世界中的连接能减少对屏幕的沉迷。)”可知,本段建议人们多做一些现实中的事情。选项B“Real fulfillment comes from offline experiences.(真正的满足感来自线下体验。)”与下文内容形成因果关系,强调了线下活动的价值。故选B。 【20题详解】 根据上文“Practice gratitude to break the comparison cycle. Each night, write three things you’re thankful for — a good grade, a friend’s kindness, or sunny weather.(练习感恩,打破比较的循环。每天晚上,写下三件你感恩的事情——一次好成绩、朋友的善意或晴朗的天气。)”可知,本段倡导感恩练习,每日记录三件幸事。选项G“This simple habit trains your brain to focus on existing blessings.(这个简单的习惯能训练你的大脑关注现有的美好。)” For most of her life, Grandma Joy had never experienced much beyond her small hometown of Duncan Falls. While others worked neatly, he tapped his pencil and whispered sound effects. Once, he was so absorbed in drawing a fighting warrior that he even didn’t notice the math teacher’s questions. “Marcus, again?” his teacher would sigh, while his classmates exchanged amused glances and giggled. Nobody tried to get to know him. At break, while others poured out in noisy, laughing groups, Marcus slipped away alone to a quiet corner. Deep down, Marcus believed he was simply not worth knowing — not smart enough, not neat enough, not anything enough. Even Mr. Adeyemi, the new English teacher, had heard about the “problem” boy — until one Tuesday, during yard duty, he found Marcus sitting alone and bending over a thick, worn adventure novel. “That’s an interesting read!” Mr. Adeyemi said. Marcus looked up, nodding eagerly. His whole face lit up and he started talking non-stop about the myths (神话) and heroes in the story. When the bell rang, Marcus closed the book and murmured quietly, almost to himself, “But no one ever cares about what I’m talking about.” He walked back inside alone. In the weeks that followed, Mr. Adeyemi watched more carefully. Marcus always buried himself in reading — adventure stories, encyclopedias, myths from countries he’d never visited. He also noticed that when the librarian struggled with a heavy box of books, Marcus appeared and lifted it without being asked. The following Thursday, Mr. Adeyemi stood before the class. “Today, we will finish a writing assignment,” he said, “you’ll work in teams to create a short adventure story which can be imaginary or real.” He had arranged the groups carefully. Marcus, Jake, and Sofia were placed together. Jake had a gift for choosing the right words. Sofia had a sharp eye for structure. Marcus, as Mr. Adeyemi quietly noted, was full of wild ideas and had read more myths and adventure stories than anyone else in the room. At first, the three of them just stared awkwardly at the blank page. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning, Mr. Adeyemi said, “I’d invite one student to share their story.” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 At first, the three of them just stared awkwardly at the blank page. Marcus sat nervously, unsure whether to speak. Jake and Sofia looked at each other in silence. Gathering his courage, Marcus softly shared fantastic ideas from the myths he’d read. His rich imagination surprised them greatly. They soon started discussing excitedly, with Jake writing down wonderful ideas and Sofia organizing the structure. Working together smoothly, they finished the story perfectly. The next morning, Mr. Adeyemi said, “I’d invite one student to share their story.” He looked straight at Marcus. Marcus stood up slowly, his hands shaking slightly. As he read aloud, his voice became steady and confident. The thrilling plot and creative imagination held the whole class’s attention. Everyone listened carefully and applauded warmly when he finished. His classmates looked at him with new admiration. For the first time, Marcus felt seen and valued, realizing he truly had something wonderful to offer. B I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree. C With a sun hat made of solar panels, a tea picking robot snakes its way through rows of Longing tea bushes in Hangzhou’s West Lake scenic spot, East China’s Zhejiang province. Longjing Tea-Leaf Picking Work Faces Challenge D It is generally believed that coffee relates to increased watchfulness and faster heart rates, so people with atrial fibrillation (AF) — the most common irregular (不规则的) heartbeat condition — are often told to avoid it. Scrolling through social media often makes us feel left behind by others’ seemingly perfect lives. Adeyemi said, “I’d invite one student to share their story.” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
