Sustainable travel is an idea that many experts (专家) within the travel industry agree on. To continue enjoying this wonderful world, both travelers and the travel industry must learn to be more sustainable in actions. A report reads: “At this important moment in climate history, if there is no action, by 2040 many of the world’s favorite places will be forced to appear only online.”
What is sustainable travel? It is about traveling in a way that reduces bad influences on the climate and environment, as well as the communities and people we visit. For many years, the attention around sustainable travel was based on reducing environmental pollution. While it is still important, there is now an even more pressing issue. With the growth of personal market, that means local communities aren’t benefiting (受益) much from tourism as they should, change is needed more than ever.
To deal with the problem, we need to rethink how we see travel. Instead of just focusing on our own experiences, we should think about the needs of our hosts alongside our hopes for a fun-filled holiday. All it takes is a little thoughtful planning.
One of the most effective ways you can make a difference when traveling is to reduce your carbon footprint (碳足迹) . Wherever you choose to go, your transport will likely cause the majority of your CO2 emissions. By simple math, that means taking shorter trips and in a way that uses less fuel (燃料) will make a big difference. And by doing so, you can visit more places and benefit more communities and people.
And traveling out of peak season can be a more enriching experience. You’ll avoid the crowds at popular sights and find lower prices for hotels, restaurants and activities. For local people who work in tourism and are seasonal workers, the money they make outside of busy periods is much valued and needed.
Another useful way to be more sustainable is to stay in community-owned accommodation rather than chain hotels. It means the money you spend goes directly to local people who are serving you and need it most.
Sustainable travel
Why is it important?
If travelers and the travel industry continue 1 little about the environment, we may one day lose the opportunity to enjoy the world’s beauty in person.
What is it?
It is about reducing harm to the environment and bringing more benefits to 2 and people.
What can we do?
* Small 3 in travel plans can help make tourism more sustainable.
* Travel 4 distances and choose low-carbon transportation to reduce CO2 emissions.
*Avoid traveling during the busy season to get more fun and 5 less.
*Traveling out of peak season also helps seasonal workers support themselves better.
*Staying in community-owned accommodation makes sure your money 6 local people directly.
What else can you do to travel in a more sustainable way?

Nowadays, OpenAI company’s ChatGPT, Dall-E and Sora have been a hot topic all around the world. But perhaps most of us have never thought about what it takes to run such intelligent (智能的) products. One thing this technology depends on may get you surprised—plenty of water!
Why does a computer programme need so much water? In fact, in order to have the ability to write like a human, an AI system must first study a large amount (数量) of text written by humans. In the process, it not only uses much electricity but also produces much heat. So, on hot days, computer engineers use water to keep the computers cool.
Microsoft has worked with OpenAI for years. In a recent report, Microsoft shared how much water was used from 2021 to 2022. The total amount of water used in cooling machines is enough to fill more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools. It is believed the training of AI systems leads to the big rise.
Usually, AI supercomputing centres lie in places that are cool for most of the year. These centres can just use outside air to cool the computers. But in summer, the temperature goes to 30℃. The computer engineers have to use a large amount of water to cool all the machines.
ChatGPT also “drinks” water while chatting. Scientists have worked out the environmental costs of using AI products. For a conversation of 20 to 50 questions and answers, ChatGPT uses up a bottle of water, about 500 ml. The exact amount of water used in chatting changes with the seasons.
Many people are unaware of the problem. If you don’t know how many resources ChatGPT uses, how can you help to save water? The next time you are amazed at how smart ChatGPT is, think about how much water it’s “drinking”. Why not reduce the time of talking to machines—to help save the Earth’s water resources?
Around the world, intelligent products are discussed heatedly. However, the fact that much water is used in running them may 1 many people.

Artificial (人工的) light comes from signs and streetlamps (路灯). It helps people see after the sun goes down. But too much artificial light becomes light pollution. This makes it hard to see the stars at night. It also harms animals and wastes energy.
For billions of years, all living things have depended on Earth’s day and night cycle. This cycle is part of their DNA.Humans are now changing this cycle by lighting up the night. Many insects fly towards light, but artificial lights can create a deadly attraction. When insect numbers drop, animals that eat them or depend on them for pollination (授粉) also suffer (遭受). Birds that travel or hunt at night use the moon and stars to find their way. Artificial light can make them lose their way and fly towards cities. Every year, millions of birds die after flying into brightly lit buildings and towers.
Using more light than needed or lighting places at the wrong time is wasteful. Wasting energy costs us money and hurts the environment. In an average year in the U. S. alone, outdoor lighting uses about 120 terawatt-hours of energy. Most of this is for streets and parking lots. That’s enough energy to power all of New York for two years.
Light pollution affects everyone and every living thing. Luckily, more and more people now understand this problem. Scientists, homeowners, and environmental groups are taking action to bring back the dark night.
From April 21 to 28, people celebrate International Dark Sky Week. This yearly event reminds people to reduce light pollution. A teenager started it in 2003. Now DarkSky International runs it. The group’s website says we should only use outdoor lighting when necessary. It also asks people to tell others about light pollution. Why not go outside with your family and friends to enjoy the beautiful night sky now?
Basic
information
Artificial light, 1 light from signs and streetlamps, helps people see when the sun goes down, but too much of it results in light pollution.
Bad 2
Animals
·Artificial light 3 a greater number of insects to die, as it attracts them in a deadly way.
·What’s worse, insects are closely 4 with other animals and plants because these living things depend on them for food or pollination.
·Artificial light puts the lives of birds in 5 because they may crash into the lighted buildings and towers.
Energy
·It is a 6 of energy to use overly bright lighting or leave lights on unnecessarily.
·On 7 , just in the U.S., outdoor lights use about 120 terawatt-hours of energy each year.
Actions taken
International Dark Sky Week is celebrated every year from April 21 to April 28.
·More and more people from all kinds of jobs are 8 of the importance of bringing natural night back.
·Dark Sky International’s website suggests:
■ 9 using outdoor lighting when it is not necessary.
■Spreading information about light pollution.

In recent years, China has tried its best to protect the environment and achieved great results. These achievements include many areas. Let’s take a closer look at some of these successes.
Leading in Renewable Energy
China is now the world’s largest producer of solar and wind energy. By building huge solar farms and wind turbines (涡轮机), the country offers clean power to millions of homes. For example, in 2022, China’s solar power reached over 390 million kilowatts (千瓦), becoming the top in the world. This helps cut coal use and air pollution.
Greener Lands and Forests
China has planted billions of trees to keep soil in place and fight against desertification (沙漠化). The Great Green Wall project, set up in 1978, has built forests covering over 46 million hectares — an area larger than Germany! The government has also returned over 34 million hectares of farmland to forests or grasslands since 1999, which is good for biodiversity (生物多样性) protection.
Clearer Skies in Cities
Air pollution used to be a serious problem in cities like Beijing. However, some laws have made air quality better. Beijing’s average PM 2.5 level dropped by about 63% between 2013 and 2021. Many cities now have more blue sky days than before.
Promoting Green Transport
In 2023, over 60% of the world’s electric vehicles (EVs) (电动汽车) were made in China. China leads the world in EV production and sales. Cities like Shenzhen have already used electric buses and taxis completely instead of oil-powered ones, lowering carbon emissions (排放) and noise pollution.
China’s environmental achievements show that progress is possible when people and government work together. As students, we can also take action to make a difference by saving energy, recycling and reusing. After all, protecting the Earth is everyone’s duty!
China’s Journey to a Greener Future

CHINA TO THE RESCUE!
The China International Search and Rescue Team (CISAR) was set up in 2001 and is now made up of several hundred rescue workers and about 20 trained dogs. The team brings help and hope to those poor people after a storm, flood, earthquake, or any other natural disaster. Some even lost their homes and families.
After years of strict and careful training, the team took on its first international rescue tasks in 2003. That year, the Chinese team helped save lives after earthquakes in Algeria and Iran. It was the first time that a Chinese team worked abroad, and the team won high praise for their bravery and professional skills.
Since then, the CISAR has finished many tasks. The list of people to whom help has been given is long. The team treated more than 3,000 injured (受伤的) people in the 2006 earthquake in Indonesia, and spent several months giving help to over 25,000 people of the 2010 floods in Pakistan.
Being a rescue worker isn’t easy. They need to learn how to find trapped people, treat injuries and give out food, water and other supplies. They have to work in dangerous and difficult conditions: after a disaster, there’s often no electricity or clean water, and diseases and accidents may break out. Rescuers fight to save lives, but they also have to face the danger of death. So they need to be strong both in body and mind.
Rescue workers also need to be kind-hearted. It takes a lot of love and courage to risk your own life to save others. The members of CISAR have plenty of both, and they’ re always ready to go wherever they’ re needed.

Different people like different festivals. For me, I like International Volunteer Day best. It’s on December 5th. Luckily, I was born on that day.
I once worked as a volunteer at a Children’s Hospital in a small Town in South Africa. My job was to help make the kids feel happy while they were staying in the hospital. It maybe sounds interesting. But some people can’t understand why I did it.
I did volunteering mainly because it could help build a better future for people, no matter who or where they are. In this big world, so many people are in need of help.
Look at the children in the hospital where I worked. They felt scared (害怕的) and lonely when they faced all the difficulties since their parents also had other kids to care for. So, why not try to help as many people as possible?
Volunteering in Africa and helping people there let me see other parts of this planet (星球). And volunteering at the hospital showed me a side of the world I did not know about before. I met people from all over the world who have their own ideas, experiences (经历) and dreams. We got to share so much with each other.
I really felt close to these people. We shared amazing memories (记忆) and grew together. I wanted to go back to my country with new experiences and ideas so that, together, we can help more people and make a better future for everyone.
If everyone can lend a helping hand, the world will be more and more beautiful!

“Excuse me, may I have a purple crayon, please?” five-year-old Leah asked a nurse. “I want to colour the butterfly.”
“Sorry, but I can’t find one,” said the nurse. “I’m afraid you’ll have to draw a grey butterfly.”
This conversation happened in a waiting room at Sunshine Hospital. The hospital provided colouring books for young patients. But there were never enough crayons. Why? Well, crayons may carry viruses and spread diseases. They can only be used once. Then they must be thrown away. The hospital had many new patients every day. It just couldn’t afford new crayons for every child.
Leah was born with a serious disease, and she made many hospital visits. “A lot of the time she’s in great pain,” her mum said. “But colouring has helped her get through it.” Leah didn’t want other young patients to feel her disappointment. “It can be boring to wait for X-rays and treatments. I want them to feel good,” she said. “There must be something for me to do.”
Leah planned to buy 500 boxes of crayons for the hospital. However, all her pocket money was only enough for about 40 boxes. Because of her illness, she couldn’t do chores for money, either.
It might sound impossible, but Leah didn’t give up. With the help of her family and friends, she held many activities to raise money. And she would always be there in her wheelchair. Word spread fast, and Leah’s story went public. So far, she has collected 2,675 boxes.
“She is a kind girl,” said one nurse. “She’s added colour to this hospital. The waiting rooms are now filled with happier kids and brighter pictures!”

Have you ever noticed you feel happier after helping someone else? Volunteering isn’t just great for the people you support, but it can bring you happiness too.
Volunteering means that you give your time, energy or skills to help others but don’t expect others to give you anything back. There are more than one billion volunteers helping others all over the world, and there are lots of ways you can join them, including raising money for charity, helping in your local community, or even carrying a neighbour’s shopping goods home.
According to Susan Albers, a psychologist, volunteering can reduce stress and make you feel better about your life. This is because being kind and doing things for other people activates (激活) the reward part of the brain and releases (释放) feel good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. Albers says that volunteering has other benefits (益处) too, such as feeling part of a community, making friends and learning skills.
There are lots of ways you can volunteer. Albers recommends finding something that is meaningful to you. If you love sports, say, then ask if your club needs help like coaching younger players. If you’re passionate about protecting the environment, organize a litter pick or beach clean. You could also ask at your local library, community center or school for volunteering opportunities (机会). Before you start, remember to make sure you check with your parents. What’s more, Albers says volunteering is an activity that everyone can do. You needn’t have a lot of skills or spend much time.”

Kids aren’t born with good manners. They learn manners firstly from parents, so the most important way you can pass good manners to your kids is to show an example and keep talking about good manners at home.
You can’t avoid these two passwords in your home: “please” and “thank you”. Start by modeling them when your children are only months old. As they get older, remind (提醒) them gently when they forget. They will get in the habit of saying “May I please have a glass of milk?” instead of “I want milk!”
My daughter went through a shy phase (阶段). She found it difficult to say “thank you” to people she didn’t know well. I knew that she wasn’t being impolite—she just wasn’t used to talking with strangers. We came up with a good idea. She would try her best to look at the person who helped her and smile. I’d then jump in and say, “She’s saying thank you with her eyes.” It wasn’t long before she said the words herself, and I helped her get there.
Picking nose, talking while eating, running around. These acts are usually seen in childhood. For all these acts, you can find a simple password that gives your child a sign to show it’s not the best choice of action in public places. We use the word “inappropriate (不恰当的)”, it doesn’t mean these actions are always bad. It only tells children that these actions have a time and a place, but “not here, not now”.

Teaching good manners can seem like a lot of work, but it is as important as brushing teeth twice a day. Actually, just give time and any child can learn to be polite. Here are some tips on how to help kids remember good manners in their daily life.
Sometimes children may be willing to listen to someone instead of their parents. Turn to friends, family, and teachers and encourage them to practice good manners at all times. If an uncle burps (打嗝) at the dinner table, have him say “Excuse me.” or “Pardon me.”. If your children jump on the sofa at Grandma’s house, have her explain that jumping on furniture is impolite. This shows that a different person can be more effective (有效的) than the same one who is heard all the time. If no one plays down (对……轻描淡写) bad manners, your kids won’t either.
Prepare for different situations in which your kids need to behave politely. If you’re in your backyard where a child has been on the swings (秋千) too long, he doesn’t notice others waiting. Show how you would politely ask the child to give everyone else a turn. With practice, your child will have the confidence to deal with any situation with politeness and good manners.
Family dinners are perfect situations for practicing table manners, such as learning how to use utensils (餐具), eating properly, your child has a chance to experience and eat new foods in a safe environment. This will encourage him to be open and excited about new dishes and situations. If he doesn’t like the food, teach him how to refuse it without complaining about it. Advise him to eat his favourite food in small and slow bites with practice.
When my child used to point out someone’s bad manners, I would ask him what that person should have done differently. Talk about different situations, ask what words he can use to sound polite when talking to an adult. Ask your child to share his ideas with you. Encourage him to practice them as soon as possible and ask him to report what happens and if the result is good.

Get others to help

▶A different person can do 3 work than the same one who is always heard.
Role-play situations
▶Help kids to 4 good manners in different situations.
▶In this way, kids will be 5 to deal with any situation.

▶Teach kids to use utensils, eat and talk 6 .
▶Tell kids not to 7 about the food they dislike.

In Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, the Twelve Hours of Chang’an is a cultural street with a Tang Dynasty theme, which shows a clear and lifelike picture of Tang Dynasty (618—907) city life. Changed from a former shopping mall, the 24,000-square-meter block opened in April 2022. Sitting near the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and within the busy Datang Everbright City, the block has several metro lines to get there and has since drawn over 4 million visitors across the world.
The street recreates the busy streets, ancient buildings, and lively markets of ancient Chang’an. Visitors can walk slowly through the 12 themed Tang-style streets, enjoying the smell of local snacks such as Hu-style pancakes. Young ladies in Hanfu and Tang-style makeup can be seen everywhere. They take wonderful photos to record their special “time-travel” experience.
A highlight of the block is the interactive (互动的) shows. They can interact with actors dressed as Tang poets, such as Li Bai and Du Fu, reading aloud classic poems and learning about Tang literature. Visitors can watch and enjoy the famous Rainbow Skirt and Feather Coat Dance, pipa music and shadow puppetry. For food lovers, the first floor underground has a variety of real Tang-style snacks, allowing visitors to taste the delicious foods loved by ancient Chang’an citizens.
Modern technology plays an important role in improving the experience. VR and AI technologies are used to create immersive scenes (沉浸式场景), allowing visitors to “walk into” ancient paintings like Court Ladies Wearing Flowered Headdresses or share a drink with Li Bai through holographic projections (全息投影). There are also robot guides in Tang costumes, helping visitors find their way around the block and joining them in fun poetry games. According to Zou Linfeng, chairman of Shaanxi Cultural Tourism Co, the block makes great efforts to put together traditional culture and modern technology.
Last year, the city received 278 million tourist visits, up 33.1% year-on-year. This block not only provides a fun way for young people to learn about Chinese history but also successfully shows the charm of traditional Chinese culture to the world.

Maps mark seas, countries, cities and our homes, and guide us through the world. To know them better, let’s take a look at how maps have changed over the centuries.
Many ancient countries used maps. One of the first is thought to have been drawn on the wall in Lascaux, France, around 16,500 years ago. Hidden among the drawings of birds and bulls (公牛) is a map of the stars. The Babylonian Map of the World is the oldest known earthly map, which shows Babylon and its neighbouring towns on the stone.
Claudius Ptolemy made maps go worldwide. Born in Egypt around 100 CE, he was the first person to try to make a world map. With the help of Maths, Ptolemy marked around 10,000 locations from Britain to Asia and Africa.
Perhaps the most commonly used world map is the Mercator projection. It was introduced in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator. An important part of maps is the imaginary lines of longitude, latitude and the equator (赤道).
Mercator took the globe and made it flat, but to do this, he had to make the areas further north and south larger, while the areas nearer the middle stay about the right size. The reason for this is that the Earth is like a ball, but a map is flat. It is easy to find places, but some people said it was unfair because places, including Canada, the UK and Europe, appeared much bigger than they really were.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, modern technology allowed mapmakers to produce maps showing locations exactly. Today, many people view maps on their phones. Researchers are working to map the floor of the oceans and to locate every tree on Earth. Scientists are also trying to map the past by using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This invention will collect light from stars and may find the secrets about the beginning of the universe (宇宙).

In the 1960s, people asked about your star sign. In the 2000s, they wanted to know your website. These days, having a web address is almost as important as a street address. Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and potentially, millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The Web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is some time and creativity.
Think of your home page as the starting point of your website. Like the table of contents of a book or a magazine, the home page is the front door. Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.
While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout (布局). At the top of the page is a banner (大标题) GRAPHIC. Next comes a greeting and a short description of the site. Pictures, texts, and links to other websites follow.
Before you start building your site, do some planning. Think about whom the site is for and what you want to say. Next, gather up the material that you want to put on the site. Draw a rough layout on a sheet of paper.
While there are no rules you have to follow, there are a few things to remember:
START SIMPLY
If you are too ambitious (野心勃勃的) at the beginning, you may never get the site off the ground. You can always add something to your site.
LESS IS BETTER
Most people don’t like to read a lot of text online. Break it into small pieces.
SMALLER IS BETTER
Most people connect to the Internet with a modem (调制解调器). Since it can take a long time to download large image files, keep the file sizes small.
HAVE THE RIGHTS
Don’t put any material on your site unless you are sure you can do it legally (合法地).
Now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start building. Learning the Net Communities provides tools to help you build your site.

The pilot, Antoine De Saint-Exupéry, who wrote The Little Prince, died long ago, but the fictional pilot, who told the story, is as alive today as he was many years ago, along with his Prince, the fox, the rose and the snake.
This timeless tale touches upon childhood and growing up. It opens with the reminder: All grown-ups were once children—but few of them remember it. The pilot in this story loses that part of himself. After a stay in the desert with the little prince, he finds his inner child again. It is a simple story with life lessons. Here are some.
One only understands the things that one tames (驯服). Seeing the thousands of roses that look just like his rose makes the prince feel as if he was tricked by his flower. The fox shows him taming someone takes time. The prince understands the nature of relationships: the time he has wasted on his rose makes her so important.
The fox, as his parting gift, shares his secret with the prince: “One can see rightly with the heart. What is essential (very important and necessary) is invisible (not seen) to the eye.” When the pilot shows his picture about the snake eating the elephant, adults only see it as a hat. Adults can’t see what’s inside the snake. What is on the surface is not what matters. This truth sets the little prince free. He decides to join his rose back on his planet.
Has he returned to his planet and his rose? The ending exists in the imagination of every reader as well as the pilot. After all, it is a book with something for everyone.

【导语】本文主要介绍了可持续旅行的重要性,解释了什么是可持续旅行,并从多个方面给出了让旅行更具可持续性的具体做法。
1.第一段中“To continue enjoying this wonderful world, both travelers and the travel industry must learn to be more sustainable in actions.”以及“if there is no action, by 2040 many of the world’s favorite places will be forced to appear only online.”,表明如果旅行者和旅游业在环境方面继续不采取行动(少关心环境),可能有一天会失去亲自欣赏世界美景的机会。题干中“continue”后接动词-ing 形式,“care little about”都表示“在……方面几乎不关心”,所以第一空应填“caring”。
2.第二段“It is about traveling in a way that reduces bad influences on the climate and environment, as well as the communities and people we visit.”明确说明了可持续旅行是对环境和我们访问的社区及人们减少伤害,所以第二空应填“communities”。
3.第三段“To deal with the problem, we need to rethink how we see travel. All it takes is a little thoughtful planning.”以及第四段“One of the most effective ways you can make a difference when traveling is to reduce your carbon footprint (碳足迹) .”等内容表明旅行计划中的一些小改变就能让旅游业更具可持续性,“Small”后接名词复数,“change”的复数形式“changes”或不可数名词形式符合语境,所以第三空应填“changes/change”。
4.第四段“By simple math, that means taking shorter trips and in a way that uses less fuel (燃料) will make a big difference.”指出更短的旅行和使用更少燃料的方式能减少二氧化碳排放,所以第四空应填“shorter”。
5.第五段“You’ll avoid the crowds at popular sights and find lower prices for hotels, restaurants and activities.”说明在淡季旅行能避开人群,还能在酒店、餐厅和活动方面找到更低的价格,也就是花费更少,“and”连接两个并列的动词原形,“spend/pay”符合语境,所以第五空应填“spend/pay”。
6.第六段“It means the money you spend goes directly to local people who are serving you and need it most.”
7.题目问还有什么能让旅行更具可持续性,答案不唯一,只要是合理可行的可持续旅行做法即可,如“Choose greener transport./Avoid using plastic bags./Refuse to watch animal shows./Reduce waste... ”(选择绿色出行、避免使用塑料袋、拒绝观看动物表演、减少浪费)等。

8.LESS IS BETTER部分“Most people don’t like to read a lot of text online. Break it into small pieces.”说明大多数人不喜欢在网上读大量的文字。把文字拆分成小片段。本句为一般现在时,主语Most people是复数,需填动词原形,prefer A to B表示“比起B更喜欢A”,因此第八空填“prefer”。
9.SMALLER IS BETTER部分“Most people connect to the Internet with a modem.”说明大多数人用调制解调器连接互联网,空前为to,需填动词原形;固定搭配connect to the Internet表示“连接互联网”,因此第九空填“connect”。
