Recycling is not only good for the environment, but also gives something that seems not so valuable a chance to be something else. Mateo Lange, a 15-year-old boy from Michigan, US, is bringing 1 to the environment and his community through his weekend recycling efforts. At 11 years old, while playing baseball, Lange 2 his team needed money for competitions. He soon came up with a plan. In Michigan, cans and bottles can be 3 and redeemed (兑换) for money. The amount is 10 cents per item and is added as an extra fee (费用) at the time of buying to 4 litter and protect the environment.
With the help of his 5 , Lange started a recycling programme, raising $7,500 in just a few weeks. “We’ve raised so much money, 6 why not continue as long as we can?” he said. This success made him 7 and encouraged him to continue the project with his father.
In 2019, Michigan stopped its recycling programme, leading to bottles and cans 8 accumulating (堆积) in people’s homes.
Lange’s recycling 9 offered a solution. With his father’s help, they helped people get rid of their recyclables and 10 did pickups from people’s homes. “I’d just run out, knock on the door and say, ‘I’m here to 11 litter.’ I’d catch the bags and pull them to the truck,” Lange said.
Since 2020, Lange’s recycling plan has raised $350,000 and helped over 50 local youth groups. Besides, it has prevented more than 2 million bottles and cans 12 polluting Michigan’s roadsides, lakes and rivers. “It has kept our community a lot 13 ,” Lange said.
In 2023, Lange received the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, recognizing 14 environmental efforts and community impact (影响). He believed the world would become a much better place.
Lange always said, “Be 15 . Have an idea and build on it,” whenever he was asked about his cleanup achievements.

Last year, my English teacher asked us to read the classic novel Robinson Crusoe. At first, I thought it was just a common story for kids, and I had little 1 in it. I always loved short stories and funny videos, so a long novel seemed 2 and tiring. But my teacher smiled and said, “This book will change your mind. It’s not just a story, but a lesson about life and courage.” I decided to follow her advice and gave the book a try.
On the first night, I planned to read only ten pages, but I was so attracted that I couldn’t put it down. The writer told the story of Robinson Crusoe, a young man who loved adventures and wanted to see the 3 places in the world. He left his comfortable home and went to sea with a big dream. Unluckily, a strong storm destroyed his ship, and all the other sailors died. He was the only person alive and was washed up on a small, lonely island with no houses, no people, and not much food.
Life on the island was 4 difficult than he could imagine. He had to face hunger, illness, bad weather, and even wild animals. But he never lost hope. Every morning, he got up early to 5 food. He learned to grow corn, make tools and build a strong house to 6 himself from danger. He wrote diaries every day to drive away from 7 and record his hard life.
What touched me most was his strong mind. He worked 8 than anyone else to improve his life. He never gave up even in the 9 situation. Several years later, he saved a man from some bad men and 10 him Friday. They became close friends and helped each other. 11 , a passing ship saved them and took them back home.
This book has become one of my 12 books in my life. It tells us that life is full of difficulties, but we must be brave enough to face them. I will 13 this lesson deep in my heart. I hope more teenagers can 14 good reading habits and enjoy the fun of great books. Thanks to this book, I will keep trying to become the 15 version of myself.
