B From the concert halls of Europe to the tech industries of the US, C. J. Santos has created a story across the globe. Born in Brazil, Santos moved to Switzerland at the age of 18, and earned degrees in both music performance and business administration there. During his next 10 years of “intense” career as a professional musician,he spent most of his time on the road. “I had the honor to perform in the top concert halls in Europe,” Santos said. “It really wore me out to be continuously traveling and performing, but it allowed me to see the world and understand it completely. This was a unique experience, and I carry its benefits with me to this day.” Through these experiences, Santos was able to become fluent in six languages. Having mastered these skills, Santos worked with his wife, who is also fluent in four languages, to develop a small translation business. “Running it with no former business experience was a challenging but exciting learning-by-doing experience,” Santos said. “In addition, the translation industry experienced a massive digital transformation in the last decade.” This brought Santos to an MBA/M. S. program in business analytics and information management, where he got rich experience, knowledge and perspectives (观点) in different industries. The program provided him with something he clearly enjoys in life: variety. “It helped me take the most advantage of the translation industry’s digital transformation. What I gained from the program is more than what I managed in the 15 years in Europe,” he added. As Santos continues to grow his business, he’s also working as an advisor. “The world’s digital transformation has advanced at high speed,” he said. “To me, it’s very exciting to be a valuable resource to those who need help to jump onboard the digital express.” 4. What did Santos think of his career as a musician? A. Respectable but stressful. B. Unique and enjoyable. C. Demanding and fruitless. D. Tiring but rewarding. 5. What drove Santos to take up the MBA/M. S. program? A. His strong desire for a Master’s Degree. B. His poor education background in business. C. The challenge from starting a new business. D. The demand for a learning-by-doing experience. 6. What is paragraph 5 mainly about? A. The great variety Santos enjoys in life. B. The benefits Santos got from the program. C. The application of digital transformation. D. Santos’s viewpoint on translation industry. 7. In which aspect does Santos probably offer help as an advisor? A. Digital solutions. B. Translation skills. C. Resources management. D. Business analysis. C Scammers (骗子) are becoming tricky, turning to the Internet to better cheat their targets out of money. This includes using deep fakes (冒充者) to present themselves as someone else. Now, AI is being used in the fightback with Telecom Company O2 applying an AI granny in the action. Daisy, an AI grandma created by British Telecom Company O2 as the cleverest scam fighter, is a new AI tool with the voice of a grandmother designed to talk with scammers and “waste as much of their time as possible”. Basically, she rambles on (絮叨) about anything and everything to keep them away from real people. While Daisy may sound like a human, she is actually an AI large language model with the character application of a grandma. The company worked with known scam artists to train Daisy and used a method called Number Seeding to get Daisy’s phone number added to a list of online “mugs lists” — lists used by scammers targeting UK users. She functions by listening to the scammers and translating their voice to text. The AI then searches its large database to find a suitable reply, based on the specific scam training she’s received, and translates that text answer to speech for Daisy to reply. All this happens in seconds with no additional input needed. The goal is to keep the scammer on the phone for as long as possible by trapping them in a lifelike, but lengthy conversation. “Daisy is turning the tables on scammers — outsmarting them at their own pitiless game simply by keeping them on the line,” Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud at O2, explained. O2 also hopes to draw attention to scams by warning users to be careful about who they may be speaking to. “No matter how good someone on the other end of the phone may be, they aren’t always who you think they are,” Murray said. “In terms of tips and tricks, whether you’re shopping online, reviewing your emails, or receiving an out-of-the-blue phone call, it’s important to always remain watchful.” 8. How does the AI granny fight against scammers? A. By telling scammers funny stories. B. By talking scammers into quitting. C. By taking up scammers’ time. D. By keeping scammers interested. 9. Why does Daisy receive scam training? A. To recognize scammers’ tricks. B. To react to scammers properly. C. To make herself more creative. D. To improve her translation skills. 10. What do the underlined words “turning the tables on” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Serving. B. Educating. C. Tracking. D. Defeating. 11. What is Murray’s suggestion to the users? A. Stop answering calls. B. Use particular software. C. Raise anti-scam awareness. D. Avoid shopping online. D Based on a three-year-long study on millions of phones in ninety-eight countries, researchers found the global network of Android smartphones makes a useful earthquake early warning system (地震预警系统哪), which can detect (探测) earthquakes and give users valuable seconds to act before the shaking starts. Many countries have used traditional earthquake early warning systems with networks of earthquakes sensors to detect quakes and issue warnings across the affected area. Building such networks is expensive, and many areas where earthquakes are common do not have them. What they do have, however, is smartphones, which have built-in movement sensors. Using Android smartphones — which make up 70% of the global smartphone market — researchers developed the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system. “Although AEA is not always as timely as the traditional network detection, it can still detect small shaking during strong earthquakes,” says Allen, the leader of the study. Working on the same way as traditional earthquake detection systems, AEA system will send two types of warnings to the phone after detecting an earthquake. For earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher, the system sends “Take Action” warnings to users. These warnings are designed to draw users’ attention immediately and remind them to take protective actions. It also delivers “Be Aware” warnings to areas expected to experience a shaking of magnitude 3 or 4. To test how effective these warnings were, the researchers used search engines to collect voluntary answers. Results from around 15.5 million people showed that 87% of them did experience shaking, with 36% receiving the warning before the ground began to move, 28% during and 23% after. Now, the researchers are focused on improving the AEA system. “We think that we can continue to improve the quality of earthquake detection, and also improve on our strategies to deliver effective warnings,” says Allen. In the future, Allen and his teammates hope to use the same information to produce other disaster-reducing tools. Maps of ground shaking, for example, could help the emergency rescue after an earthquake. 12. What is AEA’s advantage over the traditional way? A. It has smarter sensors. B. It requires less funding. C. It sends earlier warnings. D. It detects smaller quakes. 13. What decides the type of warnings? A. Result of the earthquake. B. Site of the earthquake. C. Magnitude of the earthquake. D. Reason of the earthquake. 14. What do Allen’s words mean in paragraph 5? A. Technological advances prevent disasters. B. Researches on earthquakes are in demand. C. Quality of rescue tools requires improvement. D. The warning system needs further development. 15. What is the purpose of this text? A. To introduce a warning system. B. To compare two types of alerts. C. To raise public safety awareness. D. To promote a disaster rescue tool. You could call Casey and Jason Lawrence Pied Pipers of gardening. While others worked neatly, he tapped his pencil and whispered sound effects. Once, he was so absorbed in drawing a fighting warrior that he even didn’t notice the math teacher’s questions. “Marcus, again?” his teacher would sigh, while his classmates exchanged amused glances and giggled. Nobody tried to get to know him. At break, while others poured out in noisy, laughing groups, Marcus slipped away alone to a quiet corner. Deep down, Marcus believed he was simply not worth knowing — not smart enough, not neat enough, not anything enough. Even Mr. Adeyemi, the new English teacher, had heard about the “problem” boy — until one Tuesday, during yard duty, he found Marcus sitting alone and bending over a thick, worn adventure novel. “That’s an interesting read!” Mr. Adeyemi said. Marcus looked up, nodding eagerly. His whole face lit up and he started talking non-stop about the myths (神话) and heroes in the story. When the bell rang, Marcus closed the book and murmured quietly, almost to himself, “But no one ever cares about what I’m talking about.” He walked back inside alone. In the weeks that followed, Mr. Adeyemi watched more carefully. Marcus always buried himself in reading — adventure stories, encyclopedias, myths from countries he’d never visited. He also noticed that when the librarian struggled with a heavy box of books, Marcus appeared and lifted it without being asked. The following Thursday, Mr. Adeyemi stood before the class. “Today, we will finish a writing assignment (任务),” he said, “you’ll work in teams to create a short adventure story which can be imaginary or real.” He had arranged the groups carefully. Marcus, Jake, and Sofia were placed together. Jake had a gift for choosing the right words. Sofia had a sharp eye for structure. Marcus, as Mr. Adeyemi quietly noted, was full of wild ideas and had read more myths and adventure stories than anyone else in the room. At first, the three of them just sat there awkwardly, not knowing what to write. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning, Mr. Adeyemi said, “I’d invite one student to share their story.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025—2026学年第二学期质量检测 高一英语试卷 本试卷分第Ⅰ卷和第Ⅱ卷两部分,共10页。 1. 8. C 9. B 10. D 11. 12. B 13. C 14. D 15. Adeyemi said, “I’d invite one student to share their story.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文: At first, the three of them just sat there awkwardly, not knowing what to write. Marcus sat nervously, unsure whether to speak. Jake and Sofia looked at each other in silence. Gathering his courage, Marcus softly shared fantastic ideas from the myths he’d read. His rich imagination surprised them greatly. They soon started discussing excitedly, with Jake writing down wonderful ideas and Sofia organizing the structure. Working together smoothly, they finished the story perfectly. The next morning, Mr. Adeyemi said, “I’d invite one student to share their story.” He looked straight at Marcus. Marcus stood up slowly, his hands shaking slightly. As he read aloud, his voice became steady and confident. The thrilling plot and creative imagination held the whole class’s attention. Everyone listened carefully and applauded warmly when he finished. His classmates looked at him with new admiration. For the first time, Marcus felt seen and valued, realizing he truly had something wonderful to offer. 词汇激活 行为类 ①完成:finish/complete ②组织:organize/arrange 情绪类 ①焦虑:nervously/anxiously ②自信的:confident/assured 【点睛】【高分句型 1】As he read aloud, his voice became steady and confident.(运用了As引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型 2】Working together smoothly, they finished the story perfectly.(运用了现在分词作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
