Some schools ask their students to do volunteer work. Some students like doing volunteer work, while others don’t. So should students do volunteer work? I think they should. Here are my reasons.
Doing volunteer work can help students get into colleges. Many colleges look at the time students spend doing volunteer work. If they don’t do any volunteer work, they may not be able to get into a college.
Not all students go to college after leaving high school. If you think that those students don’t need to do volunteer work, you’re wrong. Students can get a lot of skills by doing volunteer work.
________. Everyone lives in a community. Doing volunteer work helps you know that you’re part of your community. When you know that, you’ll love your community.
Doing volunteer work can help those in need. It can improve some people’s lives. Research (研究) shows that when you assist others, you’ll be happier, too. So doing volunteer work is good not only for the receiver but also for the giver.
Now we can say that doing volunteer work is very important for students. So students should do volunteer work.
1.What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A.Many children enjoy volunteering at college.
B.Many colleges ask students to volunteer for them.
C.Many colleges organize volunteer work for their students.
D.Many colleges like students with experiences of doing volunteer work.

1.第二段提到:“Many colleges look at the time students spend doing volunteer work. If they don’t do any volunteer work, they may not be able to get into a college”,说明许多大学看重学生做志愿者工作的时间,不做志愿者工作可能无法进入大学,也就是许多大学喜欢有做志愿者工作经历的学生。
2.第四段提到:“Everyone lives in a community. Doing volunteer work helps you know that you’re part of your community. When you know that, you’ll love your community”,此段主要围绕做志愿者工作能让人融入社区展开,B选项“We cannot live by ourselves in this world”能很好地引出下文关于社区的内容。
3.第五段提到:“Doing volunteer work can help those in need. It can improve some people’s lives. Research (研究) shows that when you assist others, you’ll be happier, too”,根据前文说做志愿者工作能帮助有需要的人,可知这里“assist”意思是帮助。
Every Friday afternoon, you can see a group of students in the “Sunshine Book Corner” of No. 3 Middle School. They are the volunteer managers of the book corner, and they spend their after-school time taking care of this small but warm corner.
The book corner was set up three years ago. At first, there were only 200 books, most of which were donated by teachers and students. Now, there are more than 1,500 books here. The volunteers do a lot of work every week. They sort the books by different subjects, check the books to make sure they are in good condition, and help students borrow and return books. They also make special posters to recommend good books to their classmates.
Li Mei, a Grade 8 student, is one of the volunteers. “I joined the team last year. I love reading, so I want to share the joy of reading with more people,” she said. “Every time I see a student find his favorite book here, I feel very happy and proud. This volunteer job also helps me develop my communication and organizational skills. I have made many new friends here too.”
The book corner also has some special activities. For example, every month, they hold a “book sharing meeting”, where students can talk about their favorite books and exchange books with each other. They also send books to the village schools nearby twice a year. “We hope to pass on the warmth of books to more children,” said Li Mei.
Volunteering at the book corner is not always easy. Sometimes the volunteers have to spend a lot of time sorting hundreds of books, but they never complain. They believe that every small effort is meaningful, and can help build a better reading environment for everyone.

Do you often find yourself feeling tired and stressed? Do you wish to have more energy and a better mood? There is a simple solution: volunteering. Yes, helping others can actually help yourself!
First, volunteering improves your health. Studies show that people who volunteer regularly have lower blood pressure and live longer. The act of giving reduces stress and increases happiness.
Second, volunteering builds social connections. When you work with others for a common cause, you meet people who share your values. This can lead to true friendships. Unlike online communication, face-to-face volunteer work creates real bonds.
Third, volunteering gives you a sense of purpose. Many people feel lost after retirement or graduation. Volunteering provides meaningful activities that make you feel needed. It reminds you that you can make a difference in the world.
Finally, volunteering creates a ripple effect. Your small act of kindness can encourage others to do good. One person cleaning a park may inspire neighbors to join. Soon, the whole community becomes better.
So, why not start today? Find a cause you care about and give a few hours each month. The benefits are endless.

When the children arrived at the tunnel, they looked up and saw something strange. The trees on the hill were moving down the hill! It was a landslide.
The children knew the trees would fall on the railway line. If the train hit the trees, there would be a big accident. They had to stop the next train. The next train was arriving at 11:29, only five minutes away, and it was just 15 kilometers from them.
“We can run towards the train and wave to the driver,” Phyllis said.
“He won’t think there is anything wrong,” Roberta said. “We always wave to him.”
“We need something red to wave,” Peter said. “Red is for danger.”
“My skirt is red,” Phyllis said. “I’ll tear pieces off.”
Phyllis tore strips (条) from the bottom of her skirt.
“We need sticks to tie the strip to,” Peter said.
The children ran to a nearby tree. With his knife, Peter cut off three thin branches (树枝). He tied each of the strips of red skirt to one of the branches.
“Now we have red flags,” he said. “When we wave these, the engine driver will know something is wrong. He will stop the train and ask us what the matter is.”
The children ran through the tunnel and waited at the other side for the train to come. When the train arrived, the children waved their flags. Roberta was so excited that she fainted (晕). The engine driver saw the red flags and stopped the train at once. All the passengers cheered for the children.

Foxes with nine tails, animals with human faces and fish bodies, turtles with bird heads and snake tails, these magical animals are from Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas). This old book played an important role in the world and inspired (给予灵感) today’s works. Let’s learn more about it!
Shan Hai Jing took shape before the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). Like an encyclopedia (百科全书), it writes about the world in the eyes of people at that time. The 30,000-word book records about 40 states, 550 mountains, 300 rivers, more than 100 people in history and 400 interesting animals.
Shan Hai Jing had a deep influence (影响) on the culture of mythology (神话学) in the world. It was taken to Japan during the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties, or much earlier. In Japan, it was popular. People there once saw it as a guidebook for traveling in China. The book’s monsters (怪兽) were also popular.
Shan Hai Jing has inspired many works. Liu Siliang is a teacher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He said the book inspired the writing of Journey to the West and Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio《聊斋志异》. Pop culture works also borrow ideas from the book. Some of the animals in the book even go into movies, such as Zouwu, the star monster in Shan Hai Jing. It has a tiger-body with stripes of five colors. Its tail is longer than its body. It can travel 1,600 kilometers in a day. We can see it in the popular movie Fantastic Beasts II in 2021.

三、U6单元话题热点预测
Our culture is the system we use to build our identity (身份). All living creatures are part of a culture. Even animals have a culture!
So what is culture? It’s the way we behave in a group. It begins with each individual family. Within our families we do things to build relationships with each other. This can include routines for doing things. It also includes traditions. Traditions are activities that are repeated on a regular basis.
Culture is not limited to individual family groups. The real strength of culture is in larger community groups. These larger groups are called societies. Every society makes rules for itself. It decides how people should act in different situations. Some of these rules are written down. Some are just things that are automatically expected of all members of that society. Often, cultures can be identified by what the people believe. Cultures are also known by what they choose to include in their art. Sometimes a society forms around people who speak the same language. Cultures may also be known for their customs, including the foods they make and the things they do.
Our cultures help us understand who we are and what we believe. There are very strong emotions connecting us to our own society. Two different cultures may disagree on something, especially if they both feel strongly about it. When that happens, war is a common result.
People are learning better ways to communicate. The more we learn, the more we understand the differences in cultures.

Everyone in the classroom was shouting and crying.”以及第三段“My house suffered some damage (损坏).”可知,先是乔治认真听老师讲课,然后同学们开始喊叫哭泣,接着老师带学生去操场,最后乔治看到房子受损。所以顺序是③②④①。
4.第一段提到:“I was scared and even thought of the end of the world.” 说明乔治一开始很害怕;第三段提到:“But I felt happy that we were all safe.” 说明看到大家都安全后他很高兴;第四段提到:“I was sad to hear that.” 说明听到很多人失去家园和家人他很伤心;最后一段提到:“I know how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters and I feel more hopeful about safety now.” 说明他现在对安全更有希望了。所以乔治的感情变化是scared→happy→sad→hopeful。
5.最后一段提到:“Looking back on this experience, I know how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters.” 这表明乔治从这次事件中学到了为自然灾害做好准备的重要性。
One Saturday Maria and I had a 30-mile bike ride. At 10:30 a.m., when we stopped for a rest, a cold wind came. That was when our perfect day began to change.
By noon, we knew a big storm was moving our way. Dark clouds rolled up out of the southwest. There was no way to stay out of the storm. We would have to wait it out, but where?
Then ▲ . The temperature fell suddenly. I looked up and saw the sky had now turned dark green. I looked around and saw no animals.
Then a blue car stopped beside our bikes. The driver shouted, “Get in!” She looked afraid, and so did we. We did as she said. That was when the hail (冰雹) started. Ice, the size of golf balls, hit the windows of the car.

1.第一段指出:“Maria and I had a 30-mile bike ride”,说明作者当时在骑自行车。
2.前文描述天气恶化(第二段“a big storm was moving our way” “Dark clouds rolled up”),后文提到天气进一步恶化(第三段“The temperature fell suddenly” “the sky had now turned dark green”),因此空缺处应填“things got worse”。
3.第二段指出:“By noon, we knew a big storm was moving our way. Dark clouds rolled up out of the southwest.”,乌云密布是龙卷风来临前最先发生的事情。
4.故事顺序为:第一段“Maria and I had a 30-mile bike ride”(②骑车出发)→第二段“a big storm was moving our way”(③风暴逼近)→第四段“‘Get in!’ She looked afraid...we did as she said”(⑤进入女士的车)→第四段“Ice...hit the windows of the car”(④冰雹砸车窗)→第五段“She drove fast...There’s an overpass ahead...We’ll stay under it”(①开车到桥下),因此正确顺序为②③⑤④①。

The Floating Gardens of Bangladesh (孟加拉国)
In Bangladesh, a country that experiences frequent floods, farmers have found a clever way to grow food even when their land is underwater. They create floating gardens.
For centuries, farmers in this South Asian nation have used water hyacinths (水葫芦) to build floating rafts(木筏). They collect the plants, let them dry slightly, and then layer them together to form a platform. On these floating beds, they grow vegetables like spinach, eggplant, and pumpkins.
“When the floods come, our land disappears under water,” explained farmer Muhammad Islam, “but our gardens float. We don’t lose our crops.”
The floating gardens do more than just provide food. They also create jobs for women in rural (乡村的) communities. Women help build the rafts and harvest the vegetables, earning money for their families.
Climate change has made flooding more terrible in Bangladesh. Sea levels are rising, and storms are becoming stronger. For many farmers, floating gardens are no longer just a tradition, they are a necessity.
Scientists from around the world have come to study these gardens. They believe the technique could help farmers in other flood-prone (易涝的) countries, such as Vietnam and Myanmar.
“This is traditional knowledge that is becoming more valuable every year,” said Dr. Amina Rahman, a researcher from Dhaka University.“The farmers figured out how to live with nature instead of fighting against it.”
Today, more than 100,000 families in Bangladesh use floating gardens. The government is helping to spread the technique to other regions. As one farmer put it, “The water used to be our enemy. Now we have learned to make it our friend.”
1.What problem do farmers in Bangladesh face?
A.They don’t have enough land for farming.
B.The soil is too dry for growing vegetables.
C.Their land often floods and goes underwater.
D.They don’t have enough workers to farm.

A.They build wooden platforms above the water.
B.They use water hyacinths to build floating rafts.
C.They grow vegetables directly in the river.
D.They use rafts to take water out of the fields.
3.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.the water B.the technique C.the floating garden D.the land
4.What can we infer from the passage?

B.Floating gardens suit flood-prone areas.
C.Only simple fruits are grown here.
D.It is a new modern invention for farming.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Terrible floods in Bangladesh.

【导语】本文介绍了孟加拉国农民为应对频繁洪水,发明的一种可持续农业模式——漂浮菜园,包括它的制作方法、多重作用,以及对全球易涝地区的借鉴意义。
1.根据文章第一段“In Bangladesh, a country that experiences frequent floods, farmers have found a clever way to grow food even when their land is underwater. They create floating gardens.”可知,孟加拉国农民面临的核心问题是洪水频发导致土地被淹没,无法耕种。
2.根据文章第二段中“For centuries, farmers in this South Asian nation have used water hyacinths (水葫芦) to build floating rafts(木筏). They collect the plants, let them dry slightly, and then layer them together to form a platform.”可知,农民是用水葫芦搭建浮筏来打造漂浮菜园的。
3.根据文章最后一段中“As one farmer put it, ‘The water used to be our enemy. Now we have learned to make it our friend.’”再结合上下文语境,这里的“it”指代的是前文提到的“the water”,体现了农民从对抗洪水到利用洪水的转变。
4.根据文章第六段中“They believe the technique could help farmers in other flood-prone (易涝的) countries, such as Vietnam and Myanmar.”,这说明漂浮菜园这种模式适合洪水多发、易涝的地区,是对全文内容的合理推断。

五、U1-U4单元话题热点预测
The Dead Sea is located in the Jordan Rift Valley in Asia. It sits at about 430 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point on earth’s land.
What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with a salt concentration (含盐度) of more than 30 per cent, which is about ten times saltier than typical seawater. This makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth.
The Dead Sea stays so salty due to its special natural conditions. Each year, it receives very little rainfall, and only a small amount of fresh water flows into it. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate (蒸发) quickly, which makes the salt concentration even higher. So it is also known as the Salt Sea.
If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life—no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to survive there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t let the name or not having any sea life scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float well, without the need for life buoys (救生圈). In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation. If you walk along the shore (海岸), you’ll likely see many people floating in the water, reading books or newspapers.
1.Where is the Dead Sea?
A.In the middle of a desert. B.On top of a high mountain.
C.In a rift valley in Asia. D.In a deep valley in America.
2.Why did the Dead Sea get its name “Dead Sea”?
A.It has no living things. B.No water runs into it.
C.It has very little rainfall. D.No people live around it.
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Swimming in the Dead Sea is tiring.
B.The Dead Sea is a popular place for tourists.
C.The salt in the Dead Sea is bad for people’s skin.
D.The Dead Sea is dangerous for people who can’t swim.
4.What’s the purpose of this passage?
A.To show how the Dead Sea formed.
B.To explain how the Dead Sea got its name.
C.To let people know more about the Dead Sea.
D.To teach people how to float in the Dead Sea.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B 4.C

4.本文围绕死海展开,介绍了死海的地理特点和名字由来。C项符合文章主旨。
One night, my older brother Tommy and I started fighting in the kitchen. He said I was weak (虚弱的) and silly. I felt really hurt, so I ran to my room and shut the door. I sat on my bed and cried.
About 20 minutes later, I heard Mom walking outside. She knocked on my door and asked in a low voice, “Kevin, do you want to talk with me?” I didn’t answer. I was too sad to speak. She tried again. Still, I said nothing.
Then I saw a piece of paper slip under my door. It said, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.” I read it but still didn’t want to reply. I just sat in the dark, feeling sad.
Half an hour later, I finally picked up a pen. I wrote down everything that was in my heart. My note said, “No one in this family loves me. I am not the youngest or the oldest, and I am not the smartest. Tommy thinks I am too weak, and Dad wishes he had another Kevin who is better at basketball. You’re never around to even notice me.” I pushed the note out under the door.
Soon, Mom wrote back: “Kevin, I do love you, and everyone in this family loves you.”
I was still crying softly. A few minutes later, I wrote another note: “Thanks!” She asked, “For what?” I replied, “For loving me.”
From that night on, our family tried harder to care about each other. Whenever someone is unhappy, we smile and say, “Write it on a note.”

B.Animals and humans have the same kind of culture.

D.To teach people how to float in the Dead Sea.
