Passage 1
(2026·河南驻马店·二模)
Last summer, I went to visit my cousin in a small mountain village. The village was quiet and beautiful, with green hills around it. However, something unusual caught my attention.
Behind my cousin’s house, there was a little girl who always sat alone under a big tree. She never played with other children. Day after day, she just sat there, drawing on the ground with a small stick. I asked my cousin about her. He told me her name was Mei, and she couldn’t hear or speak. Most villagers ignored her because they thought she was different.
One sunny afternoon, I saw Mei drawing again. Her pictures were amazing — birds, flowers and a bright sun with long rays (光线). I walked to her quietly and gave her a box of colored pens. She looked up at me, surprised. For a moment, she didn’t move. Then she smiled widely and began to draw a picture for me. We didn’t say a word, but I felt we understood each other.
Day by day, we became good friends. I taught her to write simple words on paper, and she taught me that happiness does not need sound. Her world was silent, but it was full of colors and warmth. She showed me that a person’s value is not in what he doesn’t have, but in what he can give.
When I left the village, Mei gave me her drawing of two hands holding together. I still keep it on my desk. That summer, I learned that kindness can break down any wall. And sometimes, the quietest people have the most colorful hearts.

Passage 3

I felt nervous when getting home from school. Every day, my room was something different.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed as if nothing was wrong. But I was still doubtful about it. Yesterday, around the mouth of my favorite figurine (小雕像) was some chocolate. Clearly, Callie, who had just turned three, had enjoyed the chocolate so much that she wanted to share it with my figurine.
I looked around for Callie. I didn’t see her, but I heard the TV playing in the other room. As I checked the family room, I found it was pretty messy. There were toys all over the floor, but none of them seemed to be mine. “Maybe she didn’t enter my room today.”
I pushed my room door open and was shocked to see the mess! There were a few headless dolls, some broken blocks and a couple of toys with juice. “She did it again!” I shouted in anger.
Mom ran up to me. She promised to put a special lock on my door. Knowing that soon my room would truly belong to me, I felt better. However, I decided to tell my little sister how she had made life unpleasant for me.
“Callie…” I started when I got to the family room.
“Hooray!” she shouted. Callie jumped off the sofa and hugged my knees with such happiness that I could only look down at her and smile. Passage 2
(2026·河南鹤壁·二模)
One day, a young king went out to hunt deer when he accidentally became separated from his companions. Wandering (漫步) around, the king saw a hut (小屋) surrounded (围绕) by a garden, and a young woman was tending the garden.
The king spoke to her, saying, “Tell me, what plants are you growing here?” “I am raising pumpkins as you can see,” the woman replied. She had a quick glance at the pile of pumpkins behind her and gave a quick smile to the king. He couldn’t help but smile back.
As the king returned toward the city, an idea began to grow in him. He thought, “Perhaps I might think up a test to see just how smart this young woman might be.”
The king then ordered a soldier to carry a new jar (罐子) without handles (把手) to the young woman’s house. The soldier’s orders were to tell the young woman that the jar was from the king, and that she was to put a whole pumpkin inside the jar with a small opening at the top, and that both the jar and the pumpkin must remain whole.
The young woman returned a message to the king that such a task might take some time. Indeed, it was several months before the young woman arrived at the palace. In her hands, she held the same jar, and sure enough, an entire pumpkin sat inside it. The king had completely no idea how she could have brought this about!
This was her answer to the riddle: She had placed a pumpkin bud (花蕾), which was still connected to a vine (藤蔓) in the ground, inside the jar through its small opening. Over time, the pumpkin bud grew into a full-sized pumpkin.

Passage 3
(2026·河南周口·二模)
It was very hard to describe how sad and helpless the four men felt. They had come so close to rescuing (拯救) the woman, but still could not stop what was happening. Sir Francis stood quietly, biting (咬) his fingers nervously. Passepartout was full of anger and began shouting. The Indian man had to try to calm him down. Mr. Fogg, however, looked just as calm as ever. He didn’t seem to feel any fear or sadness.
“I think we should go now,” said Sir Francis in a low voice.
The Indian man nodded slowly. “There is nothing more we can do.”
Passepartout did not speak. He kept looking at the fire and the people around it.
“Let us wait a little longer,” said Fogg. “I don’t need to be in Allahabad before tomorrow morning. I still have some time.”
“But what are you hoping for?” asked Sir Francis. “Soon, the sun will rise. And when it does, she will be burned.”
“The chance we are waiting for may come at the last moment,” answered Fogg with the same quiet voice.
Sir Francis could not understand what Fogg was thinking. What kind of plan could this cold Englishman have? Did he want to run into the crowd and take the woman away just as the fire began? That would be very dangerous. But Fogg was not a foolish man, so Sir Francis decided to trust him and wait.
The young Indian led them back to a safer place behind the trees, where they could see everything but not be seen.
Passepartout sat on a low branch and started to think. At first, he thought his idea was silly. “It won’t work,” he told himself. But after a while, he changed his mind. “Maybe it’s our only chance,” he said. Quietly, he began to move along the tree branches, which bent (倾斜) toward the ground.

Passage 3
(2026·河南周口·二模)
Fifteen-year-old Leo is a lover of the outdoors. Every Saturday, he visits his grandparents’ farm and helps them with the farm work.
One Saturday, after finishing planting tomatoes in the vegetable garden, Grandma suggested taking a walk in the nearby forest. The forest was beautiful and full of life. Leo was excited to explore it until he noticed some rubbish.
“Grandma, look! Someone has left their rubbish here,” Leo said.
“That’s not good,” said Grandma. “Rubbish can harm wildlife. Let’s clean it up.”
Together, they picked up all the rubbish and placed it into a bag Grandma carried.
“________ Don’t they care about the environment?” Leo asked.
“Sometimes people just don’t think about the results of their behavior,” Grandma replied. “But every small effort counts. If we all do our part, we can make a big difference.”
Feeling encouraged, Leo decided to raise awareness (意识) in his school about protecting nature. The following week, he shared his idea with his teacher, Mrs. Thompson. With her support, Leo organized a clean-up activity at the local park. All his classmates took part and collected a lot of rubbish, making the park a better place.
After the clean-up, everyone felt a sense of pride. Leo suggested that they do this every month and help protect wildlife. However, Leo never let anyone else touch the player. He was afraid it might get broken or lost.
