Many inventors have left their marks on history in their own ways. Although there are inventors who you might not know, that doesn’t mean their contributions to science are less significant. Keep reading to learn about some famous inventors.
John Deere
John Deere is best known for being an inventor in the agricultural space. When the blacksmith noticed he was often making the same repairs to wood and cast-iron plows used by farmers, he began experimenting with more durable plow designs, which he then sold to local farmers. His steel plows exploded in popularity among many farmers, with Deere’s company (also called John Deere) producing 1,600 plows in 1850. That same year, the company started producing other tools in addition to plows.
Charles Babbage
If you’re reading this on a computer, you have mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage to thank. Although he didn’t invent the computer as we know it today, his ideas laid the groundwork for modern computers. Because of this, he’s often referred to as “the father of computing”.
Steve Jobs
Along with Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs was an inventor behind Apple Computers. As the now-famous story goes, Jobs and Wozniak started Apple Computers in Jobs’ family’s garage in 1976, and the work they did there made computers more accessible and more affordable for consumers. Jobs left Apple in 1985, but he returned in 1997 and revitalized the company, leading to the creation of products like the iPod and iPhone.
Joy Mangano
If you’ve ever used a Miracle Mop, you have Joy Mangano to thank. The 67-year-old created the innovative cleaning tool in 1990, which she marketed and sold herself. A couple of years after inventing the device, she appeared on QVC to sell it, where more than 18,000 mops were sold within a half hour. In addition to the Miracle Mop, Mangano is the creator of Rolykit, Huggable Hangers, and Forever Fragrant.

Would you take a trip if you couldn’t use your cellphone? A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder, Zach Beattie, is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. He’s hired guides for every trip but will help lead the first few himself.
The first trip is to Lisbon, Portugal, in July. It takes 7 to 10 days, with small groups of up to 16 people. Prices range from $1,500 to $1,650, including accommodations, meals and ground transportation. The plan includes at least three excursions (远足) and two social events, with an emphasis on unique experiences over bucket-list sightseeing. The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.
“When you’re somewhere new, there’s a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,” Beattie said. “Your phone can distract you.” The phone ban won’t be enforced quite as strictly as it seems at first glance. “We want it to be voluntary,” he said. “We’re not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”
Tour-goers also get a “dumbphone” without Internet access that’s loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. Participants may bring regular cameras, but Beattie is hiring a photographer for each tour so there will be plenty of photos to remember the trip. Once the trip is over, participants will have access to those photos for use in social media posts.
24.What can be learned about Zach Beattie?
A.He is always guiding every trip personally.
B.He set up his business at his own expense.
C.He forbids tourists to take along cellphones.
D.He used to earn his living in a tour company.
25.What do we know about the Lisbon trip?
A.Tourists experience water sports.
B.Participants live in homestays.
C.Air ticket is covered in the cost.
D.The trip features sightseeing.
26.What does Zach Beattie expect the participants to do?
A.Lock their phones in a trunk.
B.Free themselves from their phones.
C.Post their photos on social media.
D.Shift their focus onto dumbphones.
27.What can tour-goers do with the dumbphone?
A.Take photos. B.Access the Internet.
C.Record the trip. D.Contact group members.

This fall, students at the University of Massachusetts found a new menu at their canteens:the “diet for a cooler planet” menu. This meant herb-roasted lamb, raised with a carbon-friendly approach. It included sweet potatoes that had been picked from a local farm’s field. The options were plant-heavy,locally grown, and involved little or no packaging.
“We wanted to let students participate in climate action by making choices about their food,” says Kathy Wicks, sustainability(可持续发展) director for UMass Dining. The university is not alone in this effort.Increasingly,American consumers and institutions are thinking about how their food choices impact climate change. For many, small choices at the grocery store and restaurant can be more accessible than big-ticket options like buying a fuel-efficient car.
Small changes in eating habits may make a big difference.Studies point to the food system as a significant cause of global warming.According to Project Drawdown,a research organization that evaluates climate solutions, the way food is grown, transported, and consumed accounts for about 1/4 of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.Beef is a regular target.“If,on average,Americans cut 1/4 pound of beef per week from their diet,it’s like taking 10 million cars off the road a year,” says Sujatha Bergen, director of health campaigns for the Natural Resources Defense Council.Food waste ranks third among climate solutions. While much waste occurs before consumers are involved,Americans also throw out a lot of food they have purchased about $1,600 worth a year per family of four.
“People are beginning to understand that their food choices have a big impact on climate,” says Megan Larnner, director of regional food at the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in New York. But she adds that substantial change will need to come from the whole food system.
28. What is the purpose of the new menu at the University of Massachusetts?
A.To raise low-carbon awareness.
B.To reduce the cost of packaging.
C.To market the cold dishes.
D.To popularize the plant-heavy diet.
29. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A.Fuel-efficient cars are not affordable for consumers.
B.Food is a decisive factor for climate change.
C.Universities are working together in climate action.
D.Food choices matter much to global warming.
30.What does Sujatha Bergen say about beef?
A.It plays a significant role in American’s diet.
B.It is popular among millions of car drivers.
C.It has no relationship with gas emission.
D.It has great influence on carbon reduction.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Food System Reform:A Successful Trial
B.Global Warming:An Approaching Danger
C.Carbon Emission:A Killer,or Healer?
D.Low-carbon Diet:A Trend,or More?
D
When it comes to heart attacks, the first image that often comes to mind is that of a middle-aged man, clutching (紧抓) his chest and struggling with a pained expression. This is what you’re most likely to see when searching “heart attack” online. You’re far less likely to think of a female heart attack victim.
According to Forbes, medical research has traditionally been led by men, which undoubtedly leads to a lack of female-related data and information in medical research. From diagnosis to treatment, gender differences are often overlooked. For example, a 2017 study found that women are at greater risk of dying of heart attacks than men.
The reason lies in the difference in heart attack symptoms (症状) between men and women. According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the top-ranking hospitals in the US, women are less likely to have chest pains, which are considered as a typical symptom of heart attacks. Instead, they have more atypical symptoms, including shoulder pain and arm pain. As a result, many women were initially given a mistaken diagnosis (诊断), delaying access to the right treatment and increasing the fatality rate (死亡率).
Even if a female is correctly and immediately diagnosed with a heart attack, there’s another problem: medicine. Research has found that certain medicines used to dissolve blood clots (凝块) right after a heart attack can be helpful for a lot of men, but might lead to serious bleeding issues in women.
Although women are no longer seen as inferior in most parts of the world today, the fields of healthcare and medicine still see a male’s body as the ”standard” human body. For example, Valium has been promoted as the “mother’s little helper” for treating anxiety among women. However, a study noted that the medicine developer had never conducted a single trial involving women until 2003.
Take a look at the medicine you have taken recently. There’s always one recommended dosage (剂量) for adults. But who is this dosage meant for? An adult in general, or specifically an adult man?
32.What is the main point of the first paragraph?
A.There exists a gender gap in online searching.
B.Female heart attacks are often observed by researchers.
C.People have a fixed gender impression of heart attacks.
D.Researches on heart attacks are mainly conducted by men.
33.What does the underlined word “atypical” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Natural. B.Mild. C.Fatal. D.Unusual.
34.Why is the death rate for heart attacks higher in women than in men?
A.Symptoms on women are more severe.
B.Women resist proper treatment and medicine.
C.Women don’t seek medical help timely.
D.Symptoms on women are more misleading.
35.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Some medicines are more effective on female bodies.
B.Women’s health concerns were a priority in medical research.
C.Medicine trials involving women are being conducted.
D.Women are disadvantaged groups in the medical field.

Most Americans love Chinese food. However, the Chinese food served in most American restaurants is very different from the authentic cuisine (烹饪) enjoyed daily by people living in China. The history of westernized Chinese food started in the mid-1800s. 36 To make a living, some of them opened restaurants. Over the years, Chinese cuisine has made its way into the mainstream and has been adapted to reflect Western influences.
One of the main differences between authentic and westernized Chinese food lies in cooking methods. The Chinese food found in Western restaurants is mainly cooked through frying. Many dishes are cooked using various frying methods. 37 Instead, methods such as baking, steaming, boiling and stewing (煨), are more commonly used.
38 Westernized Chinese food features vegetables that are common in Western cuisines. Some ingredients-like broccoli (西兰花), carrots, onions, tomatoes and dairy products (乳制品)-are not often used in authentic Chinese cooking.
In addition, most Western cultures are pretty conservative about the meats they consume. Authentic Chinese food, in contrast, uses a wider variety of protein sources, including snake, chicken feet, and duck blood etc. 39 Meanwhile, many of the most popular Chinese dishes in the West are not served in Chinese restaurants at all. Sweet and Sour Chicken, for example, has no equivalent in traditional Chinese cuisine. 40
A. However, traditional Chinese food is rarely cooked through frying.
B.Similarly, the fortune cookie is a completely American invention.
C.Many Chinese immigrants had trouble landing a job in America.
D.There are so many traditional Chinese dishes in China.
E.Westerners generally wouldn’t choose to eat them.
F.Another big difference is the ingredients used.
G.Most cultural groups brought their customs and cuisines along with them.

Lisa Sweeney is a 32-year-old mail carrier in Staten Island, New York. Four months ago, she noticed that something wasn't right at one of the homes on her route. It was her quick action that made all the difference.
One afternoon in August, an old woman named Marie Boyer, who lived alone, fell at the foot of the stairs in her home. She was just lying unconscious(昏迷的) on the floor.
The next afternoon, her regular mail carrier, Lisa Sweeney, passed by and noticed something unusual. Though she and Marie hadn't had much conversation over the years, Lisa knew her habits. She was surprised not to see Marie working in her garden, because she usually spent most afternoons there when the weather was fine.
“I just had a feeling in my heart that Marie was inside. ” Lisa recalls. She went straight round to the back of the house, thinking that the old woman might be in the kitchen, but she didn't find anybody there. Puzzled, Lisa returned to the front of the house and knocked hard on the door. There was no answer. She thought that this was very strange, so she knocked on a neighbor's door, but he'd been away on vacation and arrived home just a short time before so he didn't know anything. Just then Lisa noticed that Marie's bottle of milk, which was delivered early in the morning, was still on the doorstep. It was a clear warning sign.
“I must get in to see what's happened,” Lisa said to herself. ____________________________

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you a pleasant journey bound for the vast mountain area last weekend. This was the first time that I had been aware of the vastness of nature, which took our breath away.
Hiking along the path, we appreciated breathtaking natural sights all the way. Massive green woods surrounded us until we reached the mountain peak.Wonderful scenery arose constantly in front of us. Besides, delicate local crafts and antiques attracted me greatly.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded by nature not only left us a deep sense of peace but also offered a much-needed break from the intense school life. In a word, it was not just an journey; it was a moment of connection with nature that I truly cherished.
Yours,
Li Hua
