Five Things: How to help our native bees
Discover five things you can do to bring native bees into your garden, as biologist Michael Batley discusses their importance, beauty and diversity.
Date: 7 September, 2024:10.30am-11.30am (followed by morning tea until 12.30pm)
Cost: $28 Adult Members, $25.5 Child Members, $35 Non-Member Adults, $31.5 Non-Member Children
Location: UG,Theatre
Ages: Recommended for 14+
Five Things is a series of talks by Australian ecology experts that offers real-world steps you can take to boost biodiversity and make your community a safe place for native wildlife. In our third talk, Batley will teach you five things about the gentle art of watching bees, sharing practical tips on how to identify native bees and encourage bee populations in your garden and local area.
There’re over 1,600 named native bees in Australia, and possibly another 1,000 that are yet to be discovered. They live among us, in near silence. One of the greatest concerns of biologists like Batley is that a species of bee will go extinct before being known to science. Batley is working hard to document bees and find ways to stop their decline.
Join us for a chat about Australia’s wonderful native bees, and discover ways to bring them to your garden. Plus, after the talk, Devonshire Tea will be served in Hintze Hall. Devonshire Tea is included in the price of your ticket.
21. How much should an adult member with a non-member child pay to participate in the talk?
A. $53.5. B. $59.5. C. $60.5. D. $65.5.
22.What is the purpose of the Five Things talk series?
A. To educate people about native bees’ behaviour.
B.To promote the study of Australian ecology.
C.To encourage the preservation of native plants.
D.To provide actionable advice to enhance biodiversity.
23.What is Batley concerned about?
A. The invisible disappearance of bees.
B. Naming some native bees in Australia.
C. Finding ways to raise native bees.
D. The issues with bee noise in local areas.

No one prepared me for the heartbreak of losing my first language, Cantonese, which is the only one I share with my parents, and, as it slips from my memory, I also lose my ability to communicate with them.
In the 1980s, my parents moved to the U.S. from Guangdong Province, China. The jobs they found in hot kitchens and crowded clothing factories came with long hours, leaving them no time to learn English. As a result, my parents relied heavily on the Chinese community in New York to survive.
When I first learned English in elementary school, I became bilingual(双语的)with help from ESL classes. I switched back and forth between languages smoothly. As I entered my teenage years, my social circle shifted. Upon meeting other Chinese American students who spoke English at home with their parents, I became upset that my parents weren’t bilingual. With nowhere to channel my anger, I spoke English to my parents, knowing that they couldn’t understand me. I was cruel.
Over time, Cantonese played a more minor role in my life. When I went away to college at Syracuse University, I heard it less often. And now, as an adult living thousands of miles away from my family, I understand it rarely. It didn’t occur to me that my Cantonese was regressing well beyond the tip of my tongue until it was too late.
On my mom’s 64th birthday, I became increasingly anxious about her health. Did I really want to spend the rest of our lives with a language barrier between us? I made it a goal to relearn Cantonese and rebuild my relationship with my parents.
Looking back, losing the language passed on to me from my parents was the cost of assimilation(同化). I feel guilty when I have trouble interacting with my parents, but I remind myself not to be discouraged. Now I call my parents weekly and stammer(结巴地说) through meaningful conversations with them, no matter how challenging it gets. Though Cantonese no longer feels natural for me to speak, it will always be my first language.
24.What annoyed the author during her teenage years?
A. The change in her social circle.
B. Her parents’ inability to speak English.
C.The encounter with other bilingual students.
D. Her parents’ reliance on the Chinese community.
25.What does the underlined word “regressing" in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Declining. B. Functioning. C.Expanding. D.progressing.
26. How does the author view the challenge of language loss?
A. As a regrettable result of cultural integration.
B. As a natural and positive development.
C. As a minor inconvenience in communication.
D.As a meaningful and personal choice.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A. Reflecting on my life abroad
B. Abandoning my native tongue
C. Learning a second language
D. Rediscovering my language roots

Solar cells (电池) are an important part of the green transition(转变),and more structures and roof areas throughout the world are being equipped with the power-generating panels (电池板). But their size still limits their use. Now a group of scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed a method to produce very light solar cells that can be fixed on anything.
The solar cells are made from nanomaterials(纳米材料) in the form of a kind of electronic ink. Because they are so thin and light, the solar cells can be placed onto many different surfaces: integrated into a boat sail to supply power on the ocean, glued onto tents in disaster camps, or even placed on the wings of drones (无人机) to extend their battery life and allow them to be airborne for longer periods. The solar cells are thinner than human hair, weighing around 1/100th as much as conventional solar panels, and generating some 18 times more power per kilogram.
One challenge that scientists are trying to solve before the solar panels can be ready for mass production is how to provide protection to the solar cells against oxygen and moisture(湿气). Traditional solar cells are protected by glass, but adding a layer of glass would remove the current advantage of the new water-thin cells, so scientists are working on finding an alternative way to protect them against the elements.
Australia is also doing research in similar areas. The Centre for Organic Electronics at the University of Newcastle has pioneered the development of water-based solar paint with which long sheets of flexible solar panels can be printed at a relatively low cost. In ‘The Charge Around Australia’ project last year, their scientists spent three months driving around Australia in a Tesla recharged entirely from rolls of solar panels.
28.What is a challenge facing traditional solar cells?
A. Size restriction. B. Structure complexity.
C.Weather dependence. D. Geographical limitation.
29. How do the new solar cells outperform traditional ones?
A. They can last longer.
B. They are diverse in form.
C.They can be mass-produced.
D. They are more flexible with a larger capacity (容量).
30. What factor may make glass inappropriate as a protective layer?
A. Its possibility to break easily. B. Its poor energy-efficiency.
C. Its weight. D. Its high cost.
31.Why does the author mention the Australian research?
A. To highlight the breakthrough in a charging project.
B. To emphasize global innovation in solar technology.
C. To show the use of water-based solar paint.
D.To represent the application of solar panels in vehicles.

A start-up has begun planting fungi (真菌) collected from healthy forests at a tree plantation in the US state of Georgia. The effort to “rewild” the soil microbiome (微生物组) may help grow trees that store more carbon.
Fungi and other microbes in soil are important factors for tree growth and health. They help roots access nutrients in exchange for carbohydrates(碳水化合物) produced by the trees. Colin Averill, founder of Funga, the company behind the Georgia project, is using soil from healthy forests to introduce it to newly planted trees to make them grow bigger and faster.
The planting is straightforward: a bit of soil from an area of healthy forest is added to a hole where a young tree is planted. Identifying precisely which soil to dig is more complicated. Over the past years, Funga researchers analyzed tree growth rates and studied the DNA of soil microbes in 500 pine forests to identify which composition of microbes is associated with the most growth. They then collected these candidate microbes from the test site and introduced them to new trees in Lexington, Georgia.
They also planted trees without the added soil to establish a baseline(基准线) against which to compare any additional carbon stored by the treated trees. Results won't be available until the end of this year, but similar methods increased forest productivity between 30 and 70 percent at a research site in Wales.
Averill and his co-workers also analyzed 81 experiments that examined how introducing wild microbiomes to soil affected various types of plants in different ecosystems. They found a range of effects, from a small reduction of biomass(生物量) to a more than 700 percent increase. On average, plant biomass increased 64 percent.
“It's going to do something,” says Jennifer Bhatnagar at Boston University, though she says how much depends on a lot of factors.
“Sourcing the soil poses another challenge,” says Cindy Prescott at the University of British Columbia in Canada. “Many species of fungi can’t be cultured (培育), and at larger levels, soil removal could degrade the collection sites.”
32. How do fungi influence tree growth?
A. By storing carbon within the trees.
B. By supplying carbohydrates.
C. By facilitating trees’ nutrient absorption.
D. By gathering nutrients in the soil.
33. What can be inferred from the soil identification?
A. It made the tree planting process easier.
B. It identified the perfect fungi for older tree growth.
C. It reduced the need for studying the DNA of the soil.
D. It helped choose the best microbes for the newly planted trees.
34. Why is a baseline needed?
A. To increase forest productivity.
B. To assess the impact of the added soil.
C. To analyze the activity in wild microbiomes.
D.To determine the overall health of the planted trees.
35. What is Cindy Prescott's attitude toward transplanting fungi?
A. Positive. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.

Do you sometimes get caught up in overthinking and don't know what to do about it? If so, you might benefit from trying one of these three methods to help manage overthinking, and allow your mind to rest:
● 36
Setting aside time for space with your thoughts can help stop your worries from affecting the rest of your day. This time could be spent going through any worries, considering any problem-solving, or just thinking about what you need. And if something crops up outside this time, you can try to set it aside until your ‘thinking time’, so that it doesn’t affect your mood.
● Change course.
The more you actively tell yourself not to think about something, the more impossible it becomes to consider anything else. 37 If you’re watching TV and your mind wanders into worries, grab a book, call a friend, or ask someone to play a board game. 38 However, changing what you’ re interacting with can help the overthinking from sticking.
● Physically let things go.
39 First, write a list of all the things bothering you, divided into what you can control, and what you can’t. Tear the list of uncontrollable things up, or put it in the bin! Seeing what you can’t control clearly can help loosen the hold these worries have on you, and leave you with a list you can actively work on. Second, if you’re not even sure how to write that list, simply write down everything that’s concerning you. 40 . Again, you could destroy the page when you’re done as a means of symbolically letting go.
A. See the ‘bigger picture’.
B. Schedule a ‘thinking time’.
C. It doesn't really matter what you do.
D. Instead, redirect your attention elsewhere.
E. There are two ways writing can help with this.
F. When it’s in writing, it’ s easier to see what’s worth your worrying, and what isn’t.
G.Write down five things that have gone right over the past week and your role in them.

The Fall and Rise of a Star
I was certain that every student in my high school drama class noticed the paper shaking in my hands as I stood up to try out for the lead role in the play. I wasn’t there by choice, but rather because the teacher insisted that each of us have a try for a part.
As a “model” student, I went along with the request, even though it filled me with fear. I was small for my age, wore secondhand clothes, and cried easily. I desperately wished to remain in my seat and disappear into the background. However, there I was standing, on stage. Reading lines, at least, was something I adored. So, I began to read.
Within moments, the fear was gone. I was reading the part for the main character, “Star,” who possessed an optimistic view on life despite being an orphan (孤儿). I wasn't an orphan myself, but I felt like one. My father had left us, and my mother worked during the day, attended school at night, and spent her weekends buried in homework. It was easy for me to believe that Star's words were also my own.
I finished reading and quickly returned to my seat. When the teacher announced the cast list and called my name, I was lost in my thoughts.
“Patty,” she repeated, “you are Star. Come and collect your lines.” This cannot be! How is it possible? With a racing heart, I approached the teacher to get the pages.
I practiced every day---while walking to school, during lunch breaks, before bedtime, and even on weekends. Initially, I was worried about forgetting my lines, but I managed to learn them by heart. My confidence was gradually growing.
Then came the rehearsals(排练). It was during this phase that I began to doubt my confidence once again. I was too nervous to act. I frequently forgot my lines. Then after several failures, I finally reached my breaking point. I ran out towards the stairs and started to cry, “I can’t do it!”

Dear Chris,
How's everything going? I'm thrilled to share that I won first prize in the English Poetry Contest held in our school!
My poem, titled “Seasons of Growth", describes a tree’s journey through the changing seasons, symbolizing personal growth during challenging times. Inspired by my own experiences in high school, I used personification like “branches embracing sunlight" to express hope and balanced rhyme with free-flowing lines for rhythm.
Creating this poem has taught me the beauty of simplicity. I realize poetry isn't just about words--it's a bridge between my heart and the world. The experience has not only boosted my confidence, but also given me a deep insight into the true meaning of growth.
Looking forward to your opinion on my poem attached.
Yours,
Li Hua

Suddenly, I felt several gentle hands on my arms. Voices enveloped me, and a warm hand took hold of mine. Through tear-filled eyes, I looked up at concerned faces. Four of my classmates had followed me.“Please don't quit,” one of them said firmly.“You can do it. Come on!” All of a sudden, the feeling of being like an orphan disappeared. My heart was filled with warmth and care.Greatly encouraged and deeply moved, I bravely returned to the stage after wiping away my tears. The rehearsals eventually went smoothly, setting the stage for the final performance.
The day finally arrived and the performance received an enthusiastic response. Thunderous cheers filled the air, and as I looked across the stage, I spotted my teacher beaming with pride, which made me feel like a bird soaring through the sky. My classmates showered me with praise: “You're amazing!” “Great job!” Their genuine congratulations brightened my day, which was an episode in my life that I would never forget. From that day on, whenever I felt discouraged, I chose to persevere and face adversity with confidence and optimism. I will never forget that I was once a “fallen star” who managed to rise and shine through my own efforts.

M: Oh, this is embarrassing ... I was being stupid without reading the instructions. I’ll keep it.
W: Of course.

W: Brenton, did you guys go to the beach last weekend?
M: Yep. Actually, we go to the beach every Saturday afternoon to do beach cleanups.
W: When did you start doing that?
M: Last August. My friend Linda went through Heal the Bay’s Speakers Bureau training last April and said it was an amazing experience. With her recommendation, I joined the Adopt-A-Beach program and started doing beach cleanups. Then my parents joined me. We enjoy hearing from others that they appreciate our efforts while we’re doing cleanups.
W: Very meaningful. Do you think there’re any appropriate programs for me?
M: Of course. You adore animals, so the Aquarium will be a good choice for you. Besides, there’s also Beach Captains and Saturday Warriors. And the people at Heal the Bay are enthusiastic and kind-hearted. They do incredible work and take collective action to solve issues that affect every single one of us.

Good evening, everyone. Welcome to “Net Travel”! After such a long year of work, you must be eager to get away and have a wonderful holiday trip. In today’s show, I’d like to introduce an awesome but very economical tour package—a 4-Night All-Inclusive Accommodation Package to the Caribbean. The tour package’s available from January 5th, 2022, to May 20th, 2022, and costs only $1,430 now—that’s 50% off. With this package, you can enjoy 5 days and 4 nights of pure luxury in a sea-view room. The room can hold 2 adults with 2 kids at maximum—perfect for families. This package means a Limitless All-Inclusive service, which includes all the meals, entertainment, tours, golf, and baths to the maximum without any worry. However, transportation from and to the airport is not included. Besides, because of the discount offer, this package is not combinable with other promotions and does not apply to large groups or weddings. Last but not least, due to the tourist boom, the rooms are booked up quickly. So here’s my suggestion, no more hesitation and book your ideal package now!
