In 2025, a team of scientists from China developed a new environmental tech called “Solar-Powered Algae (藻类) Mats” (SPA Mats), which has become a great achievement in cleaning polluted water. Unlike traditional water treatment (处理) methods that cost much and use lots of energy, SPA Mats use solar power to grow special algae that eat harmful things in rivers, lakes and even oceans. This technology has been tested in three Chinese cities since early 2026 and shown amazing results.
Each SPA Mat is a thin, flexible sheet that can be spread on water surfaces easily. It is covered with tiny solar panels that provide energy for the algae to grow fast. Every 1 m² of SPA Mats can clean 120 liters of polluted water per day, and it can work for up to 18 months without being replaced. The team first tested 50 SPA Mats in a small polluted river in Hangzhou. After two months, the water quality improved greatly. Encouraged by this, they added 150 more mats in the same area. In total, these mats reduced harmful chemicals in the river by 65% and made the water clear enough for small fish to return. Local people also noticed that the bad smell from the river was gone, and more birds began to stay nearby.
However, the technology still has room for improvement. The SPA Mats work best in areas with plenty of sunlight, but they don’t work as well on cloudy days or in dark water. Also, making the mats requires special materials that are not cheap yet. Scientists are now working to optimize the technology, hoping to make the mats affordable and suitable for different weather conditions.
The team behind SPA Mats hopes to bring this technology to more countries by 2027, for it shows environmental protection and scientific development can go hand in hand. Such green tech can surely grow fast in the future, solve more water pollution problems around the world and let more people see the great power of science and nature working together.
31.Why does the writer talk about the test in Hangzhou in Paragraph 2?
A.To explain how to use the SPA Mats in rivers.
B.To show where the SPA Mats were first made.
C.To tell how well the SPA Mats work in real life.
D.To compare the SPA Mats with other water cleaners.
32.Why don’t the SPA Mats work as well in some environments?
A.They need plenty of sunlight to work well.
B.They need to be replaced after a short time.
C.They need much water to keep the algae alive.
D.They can only be used in small rivers in China.
33.What does the underlined word “optimize” mean in paragraph 3?
A.To look for something. B.To stop using something.
C.To make something better. D.To change something totally.
34.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Scientists will soon work out all the problems of SPA Mats.
B.Traditional water treatment methods are no longer popular now.
C.SPA Mats have been widely used in many countries around the world.
D.Green tech will play a more important part in environmental protection.
35.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce a new water-cleaning technology and its effects.
B.To call on people to protect rivers and lakes from pollution.
C.To compare different methods of water treatment in China.
D.To explain why scientific development is important for the future.
【答案】31.C 32.A 33.C 34.D 35.A

When 14-year-old Lin Xia from Shanghai first arrived in London for a student exchange program, she was both excited and nervous. Her host family, the Thompsons, welcomed her warmly, but cultural misunderstandings soon appeared.
On her first morning, Mrs. Thompson served baked beans and toast for breakfast. Xia politely ate a few bites, though the salty beans couldn’t satisfy her taste buds. Later, she whispered to her roommate Emma, “Do British people eat beans every morning?” Emma burst out laughing. “No! Mum thought you might miss Chinese breakfasts. She read online that beans are popular in Shanghai!” Xia realized Mrs. Thompson had mixed up Shanghai’s sweet red bean desserts with British baked beans.
Another challenge turned up during a school project. Xia’s team needed to design a poster about climate solutions. While her British teammates freely debated (辩论) ideas, Xia hesitated (犹豫) to disagree with others, remembering her teachers’ advice in China: “Group harmony matters most.” Noticing her silence, the teacher Ms. Wilkins came up to her. “Your opinion is valuable, Xia. In Britain, respectful debates often lead to better solutions.” Taking a deep breath, Xia shared her idea of using algae (藻类) to take in carbon dioxide — a concept she’d learned from her scientist father. The team loved it and won the first prize.
By the trip’s end, Xia had grown bolder. She even taught the Thompsons to make dumplings, laughing as Mr. Thompson accidentally dropped one on the cat. “Cultural exchange isn’t about being perfect,” she wrote in her diary. “It’s about listening, adapting (适应), and finding joy in the messy middle.”

Now, people’s lives are full of choices. I want to choose this. Wait! That one seems better than this one. I should make a decision after looking through all of them. As a result, they often spend much time deciding what to buy. In the end, they usually lose the happiness of getting new things and forget what’s truly important.
The situation is quite normal for humans. And psychologists (心理学家) call it paradox (矛盾) of choice. These words first appeared in a book by an American psychologist Barry.
In the book, he found that many people were getting happier when they knew there were many products for them to choose. However, as the number of choices went up, people got more worried because they spend more time telling the differences between the products. The more time they spent, the more unhappy they seemed to be.
To solve the problem, Barry gave some advice in his book on shopping. Firstly, it’s important to know what we need a product for. Before we know it, if we have different needs at the same time, place them from the most important to the least important. Secondly, take the look of the products more seriously. Finally, if you have a few possible choices at hand, just choose any one. Stop thinking of how your life will be different if you choose.
根据短文内容判断对错,对的选“T”,错的选“F”。
41.People usually spend little time deciding what to buy because there are too many choices.
42.The “paradox of choice” was first put forward in a book written by an American psychologist Barry.
43.At first, many people felt happy when they knew there were a lot of products to choose from.
44.According to Barry, people should look through all the possible choices before making a decision.
45.Barry suggests that people should stop thinking about the differences that different choices will bring to their lives.
【答案】41.F 42.T 43.T 44.F 45.T

Our Family’s “Fitness Fun” Challenge
Bored with our sedentary routines, my family decided to start a “Fitness Fun” challenge. We downloaded an app that allowed us to track our daily steps and complete fun workout videos together.
The rules were simple: every day, we would all try to complete a 20-minute family workout and log our steps. My dad, usually a couch potato, surprisingly became the most enthusiastic, often challenging us to step contests. My mom turned the living room into our yoga studio. There were hilarious moments, like when our dog would try to join in the yoga sessions, or when my dad attempted dance fitness and created his own unique moves. We laughed, we sweated, and we encouraged each other.
After two months, the results were clear. We all felt more energetic and slept better. But the greatest gain wasn’t physical; it was the strengthened family bond. Those shared 20 minutes became a sacred time for us to connect, free from phones and work. The “Fitness Fun” challenge didn’t just get us moving; it brought us closer together, turning exercise from a chore into a cherished family activity.

Cooking helps discover future jobs.
When schools offer cooking lessons, students may show an interest in cooking. 48 This will give them the chance to practice their basic skills and be creative in the kitchen.
49
One of the main reasons why cooking should be taught in schools is that the students always spend a lot of money to buy take-out food, while in fact they could prepare a nice meal with less cost by buying the required ingredients (食材).
