Stadler from California is the owner of two dogs-two-year-old Remi and 15-year-old
Madi."It was a tough introduction,"Stadler recalled."Madi can be spirited,and bringing in
an energetic puppy wasn't her favorite thing."Now,the dogs get along well.Still, they
sometimes show the deeper bond they've formed in their own way.
Recently,Stadler realized that what she thought was a behavior issue with Remi was
actually his way of helping his older sister.Stadler explained that she had trained Remi to ring
a bell by the door when he needed to go outside. But as time passed,he began ringing it much
more often.
At first, she assumed Remi simply wanted to go outside to play. But she soon realized
what was truly happening.Madi had never learned to ring the bell.Instead, she used to sit by
the door to signal that she needed to go out.Now that Madi had gone blind, she could no
longer find the door as she once did-and Remi had noticed.
Remi started pressing the bell more frequently about two weeks earlier.Stadler admitted
that at first,it confused her.She thought Remi was ringing it just to play, and when Remi
wouldn't relieve himself and only stared at her,she felt frustrated.Since both she and her
husband work upstairs, the bell is how Remi gets their attention.
Clarity came when Stadler took Remi outside, brought him back, and he rang the bell
again-but this time, while looking directly at Madi.Stadler then took Madi out instead, and
the older dog immediately relieved herself. That was the moment Stadler understood:Remi
hadn't been ringing the bell for himself but for Madi.Stadler's experience shows that
understanding and compassion can often be found where we least expect it,offering a gentle
reminder about the depth of connection between animals.
24.How did Madi initially respond to Remi's arrival?
A.Annoyed.
B.Curious.
C.Suspicious.
D.Affectionate.
25.What does the paragraph 3 suggest about Remi's frequent bell-ringing?
A.It's a trained response for his own needs.
B.It's an attempt to teach Madi a new skill.
C.It's a playful act to attract more attention.
D.It's an act of awareness to Madi's difficulty.
26.What caused Stadler's frustration with Remi's bell-ringing?
A.A failure of Remi to take action.
B.A misinterpretation of Remi's intent.
C.A pressure of her own workload.
D.A refusal of Remi to obey her order.

You're embarrassed and then there it is:a flush, sudden reddening of the face,up your
neck and across your cheeks. The more you think about it,the hotter and redder you get.If
someone asks“are you blushing(脸红)”,it only makes you blush more..So,why do we do
it?When we're already self-conscious,this involuntary response can feel like an added
punishment. But the scientists suggest blushing may actually have social advantages.
Blushing is our body's visible reaction when we feel emotions such as embarrassment or
self-consciousness.It's caused by increased blood flow to the skin of the face. When an
emotion causes blushing, the sympathetic nervous system-which controls automatic body
function一releases adrenaline(肾上腺素).In the body,adrenaline tightens blood vessels(血
)but in the face,it does the opposite-they dilate. This means more blood flows to the
skin and makes the face feel hot.
People blush when they are feeling self-conscious,which is brought on by unwanted
social attention. So even though the "fight-or-flight"system is involved, blushing isn't about
preparing for danger.Instead, scientists think it became a social signal,a way of showing
others that we recognize a mistake or feel embarrassed. This can actually help build trust,
because people often see blushing as a sign of honesty-especially as it's involuntary.Blushing
can signal a non-verbal apology for a social misstep, which can help maintain social bonds
after a mistake.
Because blushing is an involuntary reaction, you can't stop a blush once it's coming on.
However,if you have a blush that lasts more than a few days,is accompanied by pain,or
makes you feel painful, talk to your health professional. But for most people, blushing won't
require medical intervention. If you can get through the embarrassment, this involuntary
response can be a chance to reflect on your body's signals, and what they reveal about you and
how you connect with the world.
28.What function does the first paragraph serve?
A.To show a feature of blushing.
B.To explain the causes of blushing.
C.To lead in the topic of the text.
D.To describe a personal scene of blushing.
29.What does the underlined word "dilate"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Expand.
B.Weaken.
C.Bend
D.Leak.
30.What can be inferred about the "fight-or-flight"system from the text?
A.It is unrelated to the blushing process.
B.It is active during the blushing response.
C.It is responsible for a different role.
D.It is crucial for building trust by blushing

31.What is the author's suggested attitude toward normal blushing?
A.Treating it as a common medical issue.
B.Viewing it as a source of self-awareness.

Exhaust gases from home fireplaces, and industrial facilities release carbon dioxide(CO2)
into the air.Scientists have developed a new type of electrode designed to address this
problem by capturing ()COz directly from the air and turning it into a useful chemical
called formic acid(甲酸).
Pulling carbon dioxide out of the air may seem straightforward, especially since plants do
it naturally. The greater problem lies in transforming that caught gas into something useful.
In real industrial exhaust,CO2 is usually mixed with other gases, including nitrogen (
and oxygen. Most existing conversion (systems only work efficiently when carbon
dioxide has already been separated and concentrated, which limits their practicality.
To overcome this obstacle, scientists set out to build a system that could operate under
realistic conditions. The research team designed an electrode that allows gas to pass through
it,trap carbon dioxide, and convert it at the same time. The device is made up of three
layers, among which captures CO2.Together,these components enable the direct conversion
of carbon dioxide gas into formic acid.
Formic acid is an important chemical used in a range of applications, including fuel cells
and other industrial processes.Producing it directly from exhaust gases could make carbon
reuse more practical and cost effective. When tested with pure CO2 gas,the new electrode
showed about 40%higher efficiency than existing carbon conversion electrodes. The
advantage became even clearer when researchers used a gas containing 15%CO2,8%oxygen
gas,and 77%nitrogen gas.
The electrode also proved capable of capturing carbon dioxide at concentrations similar to
those found in the atmosphere, showing that it can function in normal air.According to the
researchers, this approach offers a promising path toward integrating carbon capture into real
industrial applications. They also suggest that similar designs could eventually be adapted to
capture and convert other greenhouse gases.
32.What is the main challenge mentioned in CO2 conversion?
A.Developing safe storage for CO2.
B.Turning CO2 into valuable products.
C.Finding a profitable market for it.
D.Keeping CO2 concentrated in exhaust.
33.Why was the test conducted with two different gas mixtures?
A.To prove its edge in realistic contexts.
B.To determine each layer's specific role
C.To confirm its limitation to ideal labs.
D.To assess different CO,sources'costs.

Arthur,a 15-year-old high school student, was an active volunteer at the local animal
shelter. The shelter was running out of funds to buy food for the rescued dogs,so Arthur
decided to organize a small fundraising event. He spent his entire week after school baking
hundreds of chocolate chip cookies. He carefully packed them into transparent bags and tied
each with a colorful ribbon.
On a bright Saturday morning,Arthur set up a small wooden table in the community
park.He placed a large,hand-painted cardboard sign that read,"Delicious Cookies!Help
Feed the Shelter Dogs!"For the first two hours, business was slow, but Arthur remained
optimistic, greeting every passerby with a bright smile.
Suddenly, the weather took an unexpected turn.Dark clouds rolled in quickly, blocking
out the sun. Before Arthur could even gather his boxes,a heavy rain began. The strong wind
blew his cardboard sign away, and the heavy rain soaked through the thin plastic cover he
quickly tried to throw over his table.Water leaked into the boxes, turning his beautifully
baked cookies into a wet, ruined mess.
Heartbroken,Arthur sat under the shelter of a nearby large tree, watching his hard work
being washed away in the rain.He felt a lump in his throat and couldn't hold back his tears.
He had promised the shelter manager that he would bring back at least fifty dollars, but now
he had nothing. He wiped his eyes and looked at the broken cookies lying in the mud.He felt
like giving up completely.Just then,a small bird landed near him and shook off the rain,as if
telling him to stay strong. He took a deep breath, thinking maybe he should wait a little
longer.
Just as Arthur was about to give up and pack his ruined cookies into the trash bin,a
woman holding a large red umbrella walked up to his stall. She was holding the hand of a
little girl.
