A new study has found that the brain goes through five clearly different stages between birth and death.
Scientists have found the ages — 9, 32, 66, and 83 — when the way our brain cells connect with each other begins to change. The brain’s “teenage” stage lasts until age 32, they discovered. After that, it enters a period of relative calm until early aging begins at 66.
Between 66 and 83, some parts of the brain form stronger groups, but they don’t connect as well with other groups.
After 83, in the late aging stage, the connections between different brain areas start to break down. The brain then depends more on separate areas and a few heavily used pathways (路径) between them, said Alexa Mousley, a brain scientist at the University of Cambridge.
She wants to know whether these changes in the brain make it more open to certain brain-related health problems. This is because there seems to be a bridge between the five stages and some common illnesses.
For example, most autism diagnoses (自闭症诊断) happen in young children, up to 75% of mental health conditions begin by the time a person is in his/her early 20s, Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默) disease usually appears during the early aging stage.
Heart health, staying socially connected, and exercise are all linked to better brain health as we age. It’s possible that these also play a role in how the brain rewires (重组) itself later in life.
52. According to the passage, until what age does the brain’s “teenage” stage last?
A. 9 years old B. 32 years old C. 66 years old
53. What happens to the brain during the late aging stage?
A. Some brain areas form stronger groups.
B. Different brain areas connect less strongly.
C. The brain becomes more active than before.
54. When does Alzheimer’s disease usually appear according to the research?
A. During the teenage stage B. During the late aging stage C. During the early aging stage
55. Which of the following is mentioned to help keep the brain healthy?
A. Taking medicine B. Staying alone C. Doing exercise
56. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The brain’s self-development under any situation.
B. The five different stages of the human brain with age.
C. The connections between brain development and physical health.

Cats are experts at relaxing. They spend almost two-thirds of their lives sleeping. If you’ve ever noticed your cat friends covering their faces as they nap (a short sleep, especially during the day), you may have wondered why it turns out this simple action helps them sleep better. Many pet experts believe cats cover their eyes to block out sunlight. Cats usually try to get sunny places for naps, but bright light can hurt their sensitive (敏感的) eyes and keep them from getting sleep. By covering their faces, they create a dark environment for themselves, which makes it easier to fall asleep.
The pet food brand Canidae explains that cats often cover their faces when they are sleeping for safety. They know their faces are weak, so covering them is a way to feel safe. Their whiskers are especially sensitive, helping cats sense parts of their environment they may not see or feel otherwise. If something touches their whiskers too much, it can cause their senses to get overloaded (使负荷过重). So, by covering their faces, cats protect their whiskers from being touched too often. This is very important for a cat’s daily life.
If there is no good place to hide their face, such as in a box or behind a blanket, cats may simply use their paws. Paws work just as well. Another reason is warmth. A cat’s nose can get cold when the room is cool. Covering the face with paws or a tail helps keep the nose warm. This makes the cat feel much better.
Finally, it is also possible that cats sleep this way just because it is comfortable. It is similar to a person curling up like a fetus (a baby or a young animal before it’s born) in bed which may remind them of when they were kittens sleeping next to their mother. That feeling is safe and warm.
Whether for comfort, safety, darkness, or warmth, face-covering is just one of the many clever ways cats catch some Z’s. Next time you see your cat sleeping like this, you will know why.

Today, privacy (隐私) has become an important part of our lives, but teenagers often pay no attention to it, especially the ones using social media. As they post, share, and interact online, they leave behind pieces of personal information, known as their “digital footprint”.
Digital footprints can be divided into two kinds. One is active digital footprint—information you choose to share, such as social media posts and photos. The other is passive digital footprint—information that is collected without you knowing it, like cookies (缓存文件) on websites that record your visits. Apps that collect location information are also passive digital footprints. Both types of footprints matter because they lead to a person’s online character and these footprints are not easy to clear completely. That’s why it’s important for teenagers to develop safe online habits. Do you know how to develop safe online habits?
Use privacy settings. This is the first line of defense. Teenagers should manage who can see their posts and personal information, and only accept connections from people they know.
Never overshare personal information. Teenagers may not realize that even small details, like their school name or vacation plans, can be misused by strangers or cybercriminals (网络罪犯), or can lead to unexpected attention.
Understand the risks of public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi networks, like those in coffee shops, are convenient but not safe. Cybercriminals can easily get information on them. So teenagers had better not use private accounts on public Wi-Fi without protection.
Respect digital manners. Teenagers should treat others with respect and think before posting or commenting, especially when angry or upset. Good digital manners help stop teenagers from harming others and also stop them from creating troubles.
By understanding privacy risks, managing personal information carefully, and developing safe online habits, teenagers can protect themselves better.

【答案】52. B 53. B 54. C 55. C 56. B

【52题详解】
文中明确提到“The brain’s ‘teenage’ stage lasts until age 32, they discovered.”,意思是科学家发现大脑的“青少年”阶段持续到32岁。

【54题详解】
文中提到“Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默) disease usually appears during the early aging stage.”,即阿尔茨海默病通常出现在早期衰老阶段。
【55题详解】
文中说“Heart health, staying socially connected, and exercise are all linked to better brain health as we age.”,意思是心脏健康、保持社交联系和锻炼都与随着年龄增长更好的大脑健康有关,所以做运动有助于保持大脑健康。
【56题详解】
文章开篇就指出 “A new study has found that the brain goes through five clearly different stages between birth and death.”,即一项新研究发现大脑在出生到死亡之间会经历五个明显不同的阶段,后面围绕这五个阶段展开描述,包括每个阶段大脑的变化以及与一些疾病的关系等,所以最佳标题是The five different stages of the human brain with age。

A colour walk is not only a form of physical activity, but also a way to connect with the natural world. It’s especially powerful when the seasons change, as there’s so much to see.
As joyful as they are, colour walks might not be fit for everyone. Maybe the view from your front door is low on colour. ____70____ Try using your other senses while you walk. You could notice different sounds, or pay attention to how cool or warm the air feels. You could also try an alphabet walk, where you choose a letter and look for things that start with it.
Whatever method you choose, the goal is to keep your mind focused on the present moment. ____71____ It’s also important to get some sunlight, as it’s a good way to get vitamin D.
A. Dress up in colors.
B. Let’s say you picked yellow.
C. That’s where a colour walk comes in.
D. Walking offers lots of health benefits.
E. This can help you feel much more relaxed.
F. Besides, there are still similar activities you can do.
【答案】67. B 68. D 69. C 70. F 71. E
空前说走路时如果一直想烦心事,走路也会有压力,空后说色彩步行能让你专注周遭,C选项“That’s where a colour walk comes in.”
F“Besides, there are still similar activities you can do.”引出还有其他类似活动可以尝试。
【71题详解】
空前说不管选什么方法,目标都是让大脑专注当下,空后说晒太阳补维D的另一个好处,E选项“This can help you feel much more relaxed.”符合,介绍专注当下的好处。
