Last month, I completed my Level 2 Chinese lessons. As the class ended and we said goodbye to our teacher, there was little confusion in my mind on what to do next: to visit a sacred spot built in honor of a man who laid the foundation for China’s modern educational system thousands of years ago.
On a bright Sunday afternoon, I visited the Confucius Temple. Once inside, I quickly realized that this was actually my second visit. The first in late 2009 had been a rushed affair as I had unfortunately included it in a trip to the Yonghegong Lama Temple, which took much longer to explore. Since I did not remember much in the way of details from back then, this second visit, thankfully, felt as good as new.
What stood out vividly as soon as I entered the courtyard was a statue of the great man right before the doors. Visitors were busy taking photographs and a middle-aged man was urging a young boy, possibly his grandson, to pose and pray. It must seem amazing and impressive for the little one. As he grows up, the schoolboy will no doubt come to appreciate what a groundbreaking change this man brought on basic education by giving everyone an equal opportunity to attend school, an unheard-of thing in those days.
There is much to thank Confucius for: his great contribution to the country’s moral guide, his near-single-handed effort to teach future generations the value of honesty, hard work, and respect for others — in short, the Confucian ethos (道德观) — that are basically still very common in Chinese society, even today.
As I explored every corner of the temple with crowds of well-behaved citizens, the fruits of a seed sown long ago became quite apparent to me. This visit to the Confucius Temple was not merely a tour; it was a pilgrimage (朝圣), allowing me to pay respect to the profound wisdom that has continued to shape Chinese society for thousands of years.
24. Why did the author find the second visit as good as new?
A. He was quite familiar with it. B. He spent more time in exploring it.
C. His memories of the first visit faded. D. The temple had changed quite a lot.
25. What contribution did Confucius make to the Chinese educational system?
A. He made education accessible to all people. B. He invented a new method of teaching.
C. He established the first university in China. D. He built the Confucius Temple.
26. What can be learnt about Confucianism in China today?
A. It is far more influential than before. B. Its values are still widely practiced.
C. It has nothing to do with today’s society. D. It is followed and practiced by few scholars.
27. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The author’s teacher advised him to visit the Confucius Temple.
B. The author was satisfied with his first visit to the Confucius Temple.
C. The author will pay a third visit to the Confucius Temple.
D. The author felt honoured to visit the Confucius Temple.

Doctors have transplanted a pig kidney (肾) into a 62-year-oldman living with end-stage kidney disease. The patient Richard Slayman, was recovering well and was expected to be discharged from the hospital within days.
Strictly speaking, this isn’t the first ever pig-to-human kidney transplant. The procedure has been performed five times in the past, all in people who were declared brain-dead and kept on life support. The most recent of those took place in July 2023 by Robert Montgomery at NYU Langone Health and his workmates. However, Slayman’s operation is the first time that a pig kidney has been transplanted into a living human. Thanks to the efforts by thousands of scientists and physicians over several decades the operation is a great success, which makes it a significant milestone in the field of the transfer of animal organs to humans.
Slayman has type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease. He had previously received a human kidney from a donor in December 2018. However, the organs showed signs of failure about five years later. He started dialysis (透析) in May last year, but experienced complications, requiring visits to the hospital every two weeks.
The organ was provided by a company called e Genesis, which raises pigs genetically engineered to carry certain human genes and to lack a particular set of pig genes that are harmful to humans. These genetic changes reduce the possibility of transplant rejection, when the immune system attacks the organ and causes it to fail. Slayman is also receiving a cocktail of immune-suppressing drugs to further lower the risk. So far, there is no sign of rejection and Slayman is able to walk on his own.
More than 100,000 people in the US are waiting for an organ transplant, 17 of whom die each day. The US Food and Drug Administration authorized the experimental transplant for Slayman due to a lack of other treatment choices. “Our hope is that this transplant approach will offer a lifeline to millions of patients worldwide who are suffering from kidney failure.” said Tatsuo Kawai at Massachusetts General Hospital in a statement.
28. Why is the pig kidney transplant considered a milestone?
A. No animal-to-human organ transplant has been done before.
B. It is the result of many scientists and physicians’ joint efforts.
C. It is the first successful pig kidney transplant into a human.
D. It has been performed in people who are declared brain-dead.
29. What can we know from the passage?
A. Slayman has received kidney transplant only once. B. Pigs used for transplant carry no human genes.
C. Many people in need of organ transplant. D. Slayman needn’t take any drugs after the transplant.
30. What is Tatsuo Kawai’s attitude towards pig kidney transplant?
A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Critical D. Uninterested
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Why is Kidney Transplant Important B. Human Receives Pig Kidney
C. The Future of Kidney Transplant D. A Milestone in Human History

In the ever-changing world of health trends, the claim (声称) that green tea is a powerful fat-burner has caught the public’s fancy. Driven by marketers and the spread of information in the media, this idea has become a hot topic. Being the curious cat I am, I reached out to two experts for their thoughts: computer scientist Chris Johnson, who’s really good at seeing through false claims, and physicist Philip Taylor, who bases his ideas on research.
Green tea has a long-standing reputation for health benefits, but the recent craze about its fat-burning abilities has taken it to new heights. Health magazines and online articles are full of stories and supposed scientific evidence suggesting that a few cups of green tea a day can speed up metabolism (新陈代谢) and burn fat effortlessly.
However, Johnson warns that such claims are often not based on scientific research. “The green-tea-for-fat-loss industry is a classic case of people just following the crowd,” he says. Companies are going along with the trend, making grand promises without scientific backing to support them. This over-promotion of green tea as a fat-burner is risky. Consumers, hoping for a quick and easy way to lose weight, may waste their money on ineffective products. When these products fail to deliver, it can lead to disappointment and a loss of trust in the health and wellness industry.
Taylor, though he knows what’s going on, has a more balanced view. From his research, he thinks there might be a little bit of truth to the claim that green tea can aid in fat loss, but only when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
So, does green tea really burn fat? Well, it’s not a simple yes or no. There might be some small effects on your metabolism, but it’s definitely not a magic pill for losing weight. As consumers, we should be careful about these claims and only believe information that’s based on real evidence. In the end, a healthy and lasting way to lose weight involves proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and a realistic understanding of what different foods and drinks can do for our bodies.
32. Why did the author ask two experts for their thoughts?
A. To satisfy his curiosity. B. To find new consumers.
C. To test a theory. D. To join the crowd.
33. Which may Johnson agree with about the green-tea-for-fat-loss industry?
A. It does the trick for people’s health.
B. It lacks reliable evidence to support the claims.
C. It encourages consumers to buy fitness products.
D. It transforms people’s understanding of getting into shape.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Green tea can be made into a magic pill.
B. Green tea is the first choice for weight reduction.
C. Proper diet and exercise contribute to weight loss.
D. It’s easy to tell the weight-loss effect of green tea.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Does Green Tea Really Burn Fat?
B. Does Green Tea Remain a Mystery?
C. Green Tea: A Magic Weight-Loss Solution
D. Green Tea: A New Focus of Scientific Research

Whether it’s practicing with a hitting bag or facing another boxer, boxing can be a hard form of exercise and give a full-body workout. ____37____ And it can also increase anaerobic (无氧的) fitness — allowing someone to work out harder, for longer. Dr. Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this teamwork can create a sense of belonging. _____40_____

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Six-year-old Leo was born with a problem in his right leg. He needed a stick to walk. When he said he wanted to learn swimming, his whole family was surprised. “In the water, there’s no ground to stop me. I can ‘run’ like everyone else,” Leo said, holding his hands closely with strong hope in his eyes.
When Leo walked into the swimming pool for the first time, the cold water reached his stomach. Suddenly, his right leg lost control, and he started to sink (下沉). Coach Lisa quickly caught him and said softly, “Don’t be afraid. The water will hold you up.” But the training was much harder than Leo had thought. Kicking, which others learned easily, made Leo struggle a lot. His right leg just couldn’t move in the proper way. He could only swim two meters before choking (窒息) on water.
After about one month, Leo watched other kids swimming freely. He sat by the pool and wiped his tears: “I can never do this. I want to give up.” His mom sat by his side and said, “Look, Leo. At first, you couldn’t even stand in the water. But now you can swim five meters — that’s progress!” Coach Lisa also came over with a float (浮板): “Let’s try a new way. We’ ll practice using your left arm to swim first, and use a float for your right leg.”
The days of trying again were still full of challenges. One night, Leo’s right leg hurt so badly that he couldn’t fall asleep at all. The next morning, Leo refused to go to the pool, but his mother still drove him there. When Coach Lisa came to check on him, she brought along some good news. “The city’s disabled swimming competition is coming soon,” Coach Lisa said. “You’re getting faster and stronger, Leo. And I’ve signed you up for this competition.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

W: That sounds OK. So we start here at the car park and walk along the path to the waterfall?
M: Right. Then we turn left and walk up this small hill. The view from the top of the hill is worth the climb. We can eat snacks there.
W: Then we’ll follow this path down to the foot of the hill. We can see an old building there.
M: We can stay there for about two hours. Then we walk along the path and come back to the car park.
W: How long do you think it will take us to complete the walk together?
M: I think it’ll take about four hours, including the breaks.
W: That’s fine. Are there road signs along the way in case we get lost?
M: Yes, there are.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing those words, Leo felt greatly encouraged.

The competition day soon came, and Leo appeared at the starting point confidently. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Hearing those words, Leo felt greatly encouraged. He forgot the pain in his right leg at once and looked at Coach Lisa with bright eyes. Every day after that, he trained harder than before. He practiced arm strokes hundreds of times until his shoulders ached, and kept trying kicking even when his leg felt weak. His mom cheered for him by the pool, and Coach Lisa always corrected his postures patiently. Leo never complained again — he knew the competition was his chance to prove he could do it. He even started to imagine himself swimming bravely in the pool, with everyone cheering for him.
The competition day soon came, and Leo appeared at the starting point confidently. He knew he was well prepared. When the gun rang, he jumped into the water and swam as hard as he could. His right leg still didn’t move as smoothly as others, but he tried his best to push forward. The cheers from his family and Coach Lisa kept him going. Finally, he touched the finish line! Though he took third place, Leo raised his head proudly with tears of joy. Holding the medal, he realized he had not only shown everyone he could swim, but also found true freedom in the water — freedom from limits, freedom to chase his dreams.
