Have you ever wondered why some places, surrounded (环绕) by water bodies, still face problems with drinking water? Let's look at Taiwan. Taiwan is an island, but sometimes there isn't enough water for everyone. This is a big problem, and there are a few reasons behind it.
First, the weather is changing. Taiwan now gets less rain than it did before. Also, big storms called typhoons (台风), which bring a lot of water, are not coming as often. In 2021, few typhoons hit the island. This caused a very dry year, and the water level in the lakes became very low. It's a serious situation when there is no rain for a long time.
Another reason is the way water is managed. Some of the pipes (管道) that carry water to homes and factories are old and have holes. This means a lot of water is lost before it even gets to people. Also, it's difficult to send water from the rainy parts of the island to the drier parts where more people live and work.
People and factories also use a lot of water. Since water is very cheap in Taiwan, people might use more than they need. Big factories, like those that make chips (芯片) for our phones and computers, need a huge amount (数量) of water every day. Farming, especially growing rice, uses a lot of water too.
Finally, the shape of the island makes it hard to save water. Around two-thirds of the island is covered with high mountains and hills. The Central Mountain Range runs through the middle of Taiwan, with many peaks over 3,000 meters high. When it rains, the water moves to the sea very quickly because the mountains are steep (陡峭). It's difficult to collect and store that rainwater.
21.How does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By listing facts. B. By giving reasons.
C. By raising a question. D. By making comparisons.
22.Which of the following are the reasons for Taiwan's water shortage?
①Old and broken pipes lead to a waste of water.
②Factories and farmers use lots of water.
③The number of typhoons that bring rain has increased.
④It is hard to send water to drier parts of the island.
A.①②③ B.①③④
C.①②④ D.②③④
23.Which picture might show the shape of the island according to the last paragraph?
A. B.
C. D.
24.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Water will become more expensive in Taiwan in the future.
B. Taiwan's large population has gotten in the way of sending water.
C. It's difficult to collect rainwater because of the shape of Taiwan.
D. Many people in Taiwan realize the importance of saving water.
25.Which of the following would be the best title?
A. How to Solve the Water Shortage Worldwide
B. The Importance of Saving Water in Daily Life
C. Taiwan: An Island Surrounded by Water Bodies
D. The Main Reasons for Water Shortage in Taiwan

In the past, satellites (人造卫星) have always been made of metal. Now, scientists are testing the idea of a wooden satellite called LignoSat. The satellite is in the shape of a cube (立方体) and it's about 10 cm wide. It has electronics inside, but the sides of the cube are made of wood.
The idea of using wood for satellites sounds strange, but there are some good reasons to try it. Wood is cheap and it doesn't pollute. And in space, wood is stronger than it is on the earth, since there's no water or O2. If the test works, wooden satellites could help lower pollution in space. Satellites usually burn up as they come back into the earth's atmosphere (大气层). Burning metal satellites leave behind a cloud of pollution. But when wood burns, it only leaves water and CO2 behind.
The idea for LignoSat came from Takao Doi, who's a scientist and astronaut. He and other scientists thought it might be possible to build a satellite out of wood. The idea was simple, but the project wasn't easy. First of all, the team had to do research on what kind of wood would work best. In 2022, they sent three kinds of wood to the International Space Station (ISS) for testing. After eight months, the tests showed that all three kinds of wood worked well in space. For the final satellite, the researchers chose wood. The wood is light and strong, and doesn't break easily.
Last November, a SpaceX rocket carried LignoSat to the ISS. Over the next six months, sensors (传感器) from the satellite will help the researchers know how well the wood holds up. The project is a test to see if wood could be a good building material for space.
26.What is special about LignoSat?
A. It's made partly of wood. B. It's quite huge in size.
C. It has electronics inside. D. It can stay in space forever.
27.How does the writer support the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. By asking questions. B. By explaining reasons.
C. By listing lots of numbers. D. By providing research results.
28. What did the researchers need to do first for the project?
A. Come up with an idea. B. Send wood to the ISS.
C. Build a wooden satellite. D. Find the best kind of wood.
29. What is the purpose of the project?
A. To see how well a SpaceX rocket works.
B. To see how long the satellite can stay in space.
C. To learn about whether wood is a good choice for space building.
D. To learn about whether the sensors can work properly in space.
30.Which is the best title for the text?
A. The future of metal satellites B. The development of satellites
C. Space pollution and satellites D. A project about a wooden satellite

阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题。(注意每小题的词数要求)
With the development of technology, the use of smartphones for learning among middle school students has become a hot topic of discussion.
A 2024 survey shows that 65% of students use social media when doing homework on their phones. Supporters argue that using phones saves time. Teachers can check homework quickly, and parents receive quick and direct comments about their children's progress. 58% of parents believe digital check-ins have made progress in tracking (跟踪) study habits. Students also like to use various apps to practice English and work out difficult math problems. Educational apps like Study Master can even correct mistakes automatically (自动地), making learning more efficient.
Doctors warn that long screen time harms children's eyesight. Some middle school students now spend over 3 hours daily on educational apps, leading to eye strain or fatigue. The blue light from phones also influences sleep patterns, making it harder for students to fall asleep.
Li Ming, a 14-year-old student, says, "I want to finish my math homework first, but I always end up watching funny videos instead." This distraction reduces the quality of work. What's more, as students write less by hand, the reliance (依赖) on digital tools may have long-term effects on their ability to write clearly and effectively.
Some teachers are trying to solve the problems. Ms. Zhang from Beijing, for example, only asks students to send voice recordings for English homework. She believes, "Phones are tools. We need to teach kids to use them wisely." A few schools have developed rules limiting phone use for homework to 30 minutes per day. This method helps students stay focused while reducing health risks.

Dear Mike,
It is very glad for me to hear from you. AI is changing my life in many ways.
To begin with, AI is a great helper in my study. I often use AI to check my English homework and learn new words quickly. Besides, in our daily life, it can tell me the weather and play my favorite songs. AI cameras can help us take beautiful photos. At home, smart systems can turn on the lights or clean rooms by themselves, which really saves us a lot of time and energy.
As the saying goes, every coin has two sides. In my opinion, AI is useful, but we should use it wisely and carefully. I’m sure AI will bring us more surprises in the future.
Yours,
Li Hua
