W: Come on, let’s go and see what else they have here. 【答案】17.A 18.C 19.B 20.A 【原文】      W: Take care of your plants! They may “scream” if you treat them badly. According to an article published in a magazine Cell, plants can make sounds when they are stressed. “Plants interact with insects and other animals all the time, and many of these insects and animals use sounds for communication, so it would be very inconvenient for plants not to use sounds at all,” Lilach Hadany told BBC Science Focus. With this in mind, the research team started by recording plants’ sounds. They divided the plants into three groups. One group wasn’t watered for five days. Another group had the stems cut off and the last group remained untouched. The microphones caught sounds at a frequency of 40 to 80 kilohertz from the first two groups. The sounds grew louder and louder during the five days of water stress. They then began to decline as the plants dried out. The researchers haven’t yet discovered how the sounds are made. After the experiment, the team gathered the data and made software that could tell how plants “feel”. It could be useful for farmers in monitoring the conditions of their crops. 1.When will the man leave for the party? B Pedro Soto, a 56-year-old school teacher, had a sore throat, so he went to the doctor, believing he suffered from an infection by some virus. However, after his doctors did a blood test, they found it was type 2 diabetes (糖尿病). Medicine to get it under control was immediately recommended, but Soto was determined to try something different. Inspired by one of his co-workers whose husband ran the marathon, Soto applied to the TCS Marathon through an application specifically made for teachers. He had to share an article in which he spoke about his illness and was selected for the team in the end. As he trained and developed a running habit, he received regular blood tests, and three months later, his blood sugar became normal. The marathon took place last November. Soto wasn’t able to consistently train until the beginning of August, because in June, he was also diagnosed (诊断) with Lyme disease. It was also during this time that Soto’s father passed away. Still, he used his runs as opportunities to release bad feelings and to build his strength back from being sick. “For me, it is amazing. It is like a block party, but the block party is the whole city,” he says. “During the race, you’re pounding for hours, the same joints, the same bones and muscles. Something’s beginning to feel pain, but the noise of the people out there, the music, the cheers... everything is louder than your pain.” Another thing that kept him moving forward was his students. Soto shares that his students are a motivating factor for him to recover his health. “If I’m sick and don’t feel good, that is going to affect my instruction in the classroom, my relationship with the students, and eventually the quality of me as a teacher! Teachers get burned out because sometimes they don’t balance their lives. This TCS Marathon was a great opportunity for me to balance my life.” 24. Why did Soto take part in the TCS Marathon? A. It was a way to escape from busy work. B. It was specially organized for teachers. C. He desired an alternative to medicine. D. He hoped to display his physical strength. 25. What happened to Soto before the marathon in November? A. He ran to relieve bad emotions. B. He stuck to training constantly. C. His blood sugar got abnormal again. D. His family members left him one by one. 26. What do we know about Soto’s students? A. They take him as a role model. B. They play a role in his well-being. C. They are picky about teachers. D. They help him maintain a work-life balance. 27. What message does the text deliver? A. Prevention is better than cure. B. Sports can sometimes work wonders. C. A teacher’s love is the students’ motivation. D. Teamwork is fundamental to achieving goals. C Imagine being able to use energy from the sun all the time, even when it’s night. That’s the idea that scientists at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) are exploring. They’re working on collecting sunlight in space and sending its energy to Earth. Caltech’s scientists have created a special tool for this project. They call it MAPLE. MAPLE and two other devices are part of a project that was sent into space in January, 2023. MAPLE’s job is to test the idea of sending energy wirelessly from space to Earth. We’re used to using wires to move electrical energy from one place to another. But sending energy without wires is a lot tougher. The method used by Caltech’s scientists depends on the way waves act when they meet. Imagine two waves coming together as they travel in the same direction. If the tops of the waves line up, they combine to make a bigger wave. But if the top of one wave lines up with the low point of the other, the waves cancel each other out. The Caltech team has found a way to control the timing of lots of microwaves so that they can combine their power, and focus the energy in one direction. It’s a little like using a magnifying (放大的) glass to focus sunlight into a small, hot point of light. To prove that the system could work, MAPLE sent energy to two devices just 30 centimeters away in space. This energy was then turned into electricity, which made two small lights light up. Next, MAPLE sent energy all the way down to a lab at Caltech. The scientists were able to detect the energy, proving that it’s possible to send solar energy to Earth from space. Dr. Hajimiri, one of the project’s leaders, thinks that one day, the system could be extremely useful. He believes that in the future, we’ll be able to send energy to remote regions and areas destroyed by war or natural disaster. 28. What is the challenge in Caltech’s project with MAPLE? A. Wireless energy delivery. B. Sunlight collection in space. C. Sending devices into space. D. Using wires to move electricity. 29. How does the Caltech team focus solar power? A. D We’re all familiar with the trappings of on-screen science fiction, many of which expand the possibilities of real science. But science fiction is not a place for outlandish escapism (逃避现实的消遣活动)—it holds an important position in contemporary culture, and its influence can even be seen in the direction of some real scientific and technological advances. Sometimes, the language of science fiction shapes our thinking and approach to scientific investigations. But the connection between science fiction and science facts isn’t always metaphorical. Although not as extraordinary as visiting the Moon, many now-common gadgets (工具) were imagined in science fiction before entering the real world. The classic series Star Trek features several everyday technologies: video calls, automatic sliding doors and flip phones. And it’s not only generalized visions of the future that find their way into reality: certain gadgets have been specifically designed with the inspiration from fictional tech. In 2016, Nike produced a limited run of self-lacing shoes in 1989’s Back to the Future Part Ⅱ. This product wasn’t just fun: Nike partnered Michael J. Fox, who played Marty McFly in the Back to the Future series, to raise money for his foundation to fight Parkinson’s disease. The influence of certain works of science fiction can even shape scientific investigations. For example, a black hole simulation (模拟) was developed for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, a movie about astronauts traveling to the other end of the Galaxy to find a new home, which stars Matthew McConaughey. To create the images seen in the film, Nolan asked Paul Franklin, the film’s visual effects supervisor, to work with Interstellar’s scientific consultant, Kip Thorne. This was no small task for either of them. Thorne provided detailed equations (方程式) while Franklin and his team had to program new software to create the images. The resulting simulation provided new insights into gravitational lensing around black holes. The requirements of science fiction shaped the direction taken by a leading physicist in his own work. So, the influence of on-screen science fiction is not reserved for box-office takings, but can inspire real change in science and society. 32. What does the author say about science fiction in the first two paragraphs? A. It’s a reflection of the real world. B. It offers an escape from reality. C. It makes full use of everyday items. D. It inspires real scientific research. 33. Why were Nike’s self-lacing shoes developed? A. To promote a new movie release. B. To raise funds for a charitable cause. C. To compete with other shoe brands. D. To test new technology for future products. 34. How did Kip Thorne help with the film Interstellar? A. He contributed to the visual representation of black holes. B. He took measurements of actual black holes. C. He wrote the fictional storyline for the film. D. He tested out certain software for the film. 35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. The Development of Science Fiction B. The Role of Scientists in Film Production C. The Impact of Science Fiction on Real Science D. The Similarities between Science Fiction and Real Science 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 When you learn to play a musical instrument, you get the obvious reward of knowing how to make music and operate your instrument.
