As a Ph. D. student, I loved standing in the rain, measuring how water drops move into the soil. I loved the outdoors, and was endlessly curious about what I saw in the field and thrilled to connect it to what I read. My ideas seemed to flow like the stream.
When I started my first teaching position, however, I lost the freedom to focus purely on research or think deeply. I was busy with some demanding tasks — writing endless progress reports for students, organizing extracurricular activities, and constantly chasing funding for my research. Consequently, my creative stream narrowed.
Later, I moved to a new university and returned to my Ph. D. research. I found that if I could be in the moment with my students and act as a sounding board for new ideas — and not be distracted by my mid-career responsibilities — then I could play a part in their creative thinking. Gradually, creativity crept back though I hadn’t yet found how to spark my deep thinking.
Another decade passed before I accepted a position in my hometown. During several months between jobs, I was free as a bird. One day at a gym, watching the rain fall and puddles (小水坑) form and coalesce (合并) outside, I suddenly was able to visualize similar processes that I had been trying to understand, a thought I worried had permanently dried up. It hit me that I needed to slow down and experience the rain more often! From then on, I’d think and write in the morning, in a room overlooking a river or cycle along banks, which helped me process new ideas and stay curious.
I now encourage my students to disconnect and take time out to think, to play, to have fun with their research. I tell them to make it a permanent habit and seek the conditions and places that foster curiosity and ability to think deeply. I hope the next generation avoids losing it along the way, as I did.
24. Why was the author less creative in his first teaching job?
A. He was tied up with distracting work.
B. He lost interest in his research.

A. By ignoring his mid-career duties.
B. By changing his Ph. D. research topic.
C. By helping students do Ph. research.
D. By getting involved in students’ thinking process.
26. How did the author feel during his free time in his hometown?
A. Energetic and proud. B. Inspired and refreshed.
C. Thrilled and supported.
D. Curious and adventurous.
27. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. Slow down and win the race.
B. East or west, home is the best.
C. Creativity is the mother of invention.
D. Small streams make great rivers.

Parents may worry that their children aren’t getting enough quality sleep. However, now there’s a smart bed to provide adults with sleep data through a smart app. The SleepIQ bed can send a signal of attention to parents when their children are asleep, as well as if they are risking out of bed. If a child is tossing and turning (辗转反侧), it can also be adjusted to make it more comfortable.
The bed was first introduced at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It claims to be the only one in the world, which adjusts with children as they grow. Children don’t need to wear a smart-band or alternative wearable device in bed. Instead, the quality of their sleep is measured by sensors in the bed, which monitor their present, average breathing rate, heart rate and movement. Then it assesses quality of sleep. They are given a SleepIQ score for each night’s sleep. Using an accompanying app, parents can see it clearly. It also allows parents to monitor routines that affect sleep, such as exercise, caffeine and screen time, helping children to develop a routine that helps develop a good night’s shut-eye.
The bed sends a signal to the app when it senses a child is out of bed or restless, such as if he is having a nightmare (噩梦). Its firmness can be adjusted to change the level of comfort and support to suit children as they grow. A “head tilt (倾斜)” feature for reading is built in, and parents can remotely turn a light out after reading time using the app. There are also fun features such as a “monster scanner”, which uses a mobile phone to check for and fight “monsters” under the bed. What’s more, an automatic light will guide children if they need to get up in the middle of the night.
The bed is available online and at Sleep Number stores in the US from around $499, almost the same as the beds we are sleeping on.
28. What effect does the SleepIQ bed have on children?
A. Their sleep quality will not be improved.
B. Their sports performance will be improved.
C. They no longer need to get up in the middle of the night.
D. They can sleep more comfortably when tossing and turning.
29. What can be inferred from having the SleepIQ bed?
A. Children won’t have a nightmare.
B. Parents’ worries can be decreased.
C. Children had better not read in bed.
D. Parents don’t need to care for children anymore at night.
30. What can be learned from the text?
A. The SleepIQ bed is the best bed around the world.
B. Children will never fall out of the SleepIQ bed.
C. The smart bed is as cheap as an ordinary one.
D. Another smart bed is needed with children growing older.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. How to get a good sleep. B. How parents take care of children.
C. The smart bed helps sleep better. D. Risks that children face when sleeping.

Hydrogen fuel-cell (氢燃料电池) vehicles aren’t just sources for science fiction or far-out experiments. Cars fueled by hydrogen, like the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, are already here, and hydrogen fuel-cell technology is actively evolving and benefiting from billions of dollars in federal research. So then, why are hydrogen cars virtually non-existent on U.S. roads today?
“The answer is simple: economics, “Sergey Paltsev, a senior scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative told Popular Science. Politicians and automakers once advocated (支持) the fuel cell, which turns the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity to drive an electric motor, as the future of passenger automobiles, but the falling cost of batteries and a large number of electrical fueling infrastructure (基础设施) have propelled (推 动) battery-electric cars well into the lead.
A big switch to hydrogen cars would require cost-cutting and enormous infrastructure development. The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center shows 55 public hydrogen fueling station locations in the U. S. today, almost all in California, while more than 68, 000 active public electric vehicle charging stations across the country.
“Nothing is going to change next year, or probably not in the next five years, but there are brighter pathways for hydrogen vehicles, “said Paltsev. It turns out that hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles have advantageous applications in medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks and aviation (航空). Besides, battery-electric vehicles can be problematic when you have problems with range or fueling time or heavy loads.
The current impractical application of hydrogen passenger vehicles in places like the U.S. is not a reason to “just give up” on hydrogen fuel-cell tech. “We may need it for many other reasons in the future, “ cautioned Paltsev, citing geopolitical issues as a factor that could disrupt (中断) access to raw materials for batteries, thus making hydrogen cars suddenly more economically workable.
32. Why are hydrogen cars not commonly seen on U. S. roads today?
A. High costs and the lack of infrastructure.
B. Lack of public awareness.
C. Limited research and development.
D. Unavailability of hydrogen fuel.
33. What is Sergey Paltsev’s attitude towards hydrogen vehicles in the future?
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Disappointed. D. Indifferent.
34. What can be learned about hydrogen fuel-cell tech from the passage?
A. It is already cost-effective for passenger vehicles.
B. It fails to solve the problems with range or fueling time.
C. It is practicable due to potential issues resulting from geopolitics.
D. It has unsatisfactory applications in heavy-duty trucks and aviation.
35. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Battery-Electric Vehicles: A Glorious Era
B. Why Are We Driving Electric Powered Cars?
C. How to Build a Public Hydrogen Fueling Station?
D. Hydrogen Vehicles: Struggling Yet Promising

Why is cycling becoming increasingly popular? The exact reasons may be complex, but understanding this trend is not difficult. 36 As concerns over the ecological state of cities grow worldwide, governments encourage citizens to use the cleanest modes of transport. Besides, cycling offers great convenience. Many cities have built separate bike lanes to reduce traffic jams, which gives cyclists a big advantage in heavy traffic. 37
However, traditional bicycles may not meet the demands of an increasingly dynamic time. 38 Some new kinds of bikes are already being developed, such as bikes with an Internet connection that allow riders to work while riding. This integration of technology could transform cycling into a mobile workspace.
Moreover, future bikes will become smaller in size and more user-friendly. One promising example is the “sandwich bike,” which almost anyone can assemble (组装). These bikes come in a small flat box, and developers claim that an ordinary person can assemble the bike from the provided wooden and aluminum parts within 45 minutes. 39
40 This reflects the growing need for practical, eco-friendly city transportation. As cities expand and environmental concerns deepen, the bicycle — especially smart and easy-to-assemble versions — will likely play an even greater role in our daily commute.
A. Future bikes will have to change.
B. In fact, most design efforts focus on city bikes.
C. Various concepts are involved in designing bikes.
D. The bicycle is an environmentally friendly vehicle.
E. More citizens are turning to bikes for a faster commute (通勤).
F. This helps to relieve the concern for the ecological state of cities.
G. This ease of assembly saves shipping costs and encourages consumers.

It was a beautiful spring morning in Falmont Primary School. Surrounded by green trees and blooming (盛开的) flowers, the five-floor teaching building looked bright and lively. The sunlight flooded in, warming the students and their wooden desks. High in the tree, a group of tiny birds chirped (啁啾叫) happily on the branches, their beautiful calls bringing the whole school to life.
In Classroom 103 on the 4th floor, Mrs. Brown was teaching a geography lesson. “The Earth’s plates move very slowly,” she explained, pointing to a dynamic picture. “When they push against each other, earthquakes can happen. Remember, when an earthquake hits, calmness is the first step to self-rescue. Next you should...” Such earthquake safety lessons were held every month and earthquake safety procedures (程序) were practiced twice each term at Falmont.
“Again! We have never experienced an earthquake before. Is this really necessary?” Tom whispered to his desk-mate Lisa. “You never know.” Lisa continued taking notes attentively.
Feeling bored, Tom looked out of the window. Suddenly, he noticed the birds flying away as if something terrible was happening. Then, a strong and loud noise, like a train made of thunder came from the north. It started with a slight shake. But the next second, the entire classroom shook heavily, and dust rained down from the ceiling. The lights in the classroom moved from side to side wildly, and the deafening crash of breaking glass rang out.
“Earthquake!” Lisa shouted, with obvious fear in her voice. On hearing Lisa’s words, Tom jumped to his feet, crying and trying to rush out. Fear spread quickly among the class — some students stood still in their seats, their faces turning pale with terror; some students cried out, covering their ears with their hands. Everyone seemed to be out of control.
