The Beauty of Chinese Comic Strips

Chinese comic strips, also called lianhuanhua, have a history of over one hundred years. They tell stories with pictures and simple words, and were once very popular among people of all ages.

In the old days, there were no TVs or smartphones. Lianhuanhua became the main way for common people to enjoy stories. Most stories came from Chinese classic novels, history stories and folk tales. Each page has one picture and several lines of words below it, making it easy to read and understand.

Many famous artists spent their lifetime drawing lianhuanhua. They drew carefully and paid much attention to clothes, hairstyles and facial expressions of every character. Their works are not only story books, but also fine works of art.
