Do you do the same thing every Saturday? Do your homework, play some games, watch TV? It sounds nice, but it can get boring, right? You can try something different. More and more teenagers are choosing to do volunteer work in their free time.
Volunteering means offering to do something without expecting any payment. There are lots of ways you can volunteer, including raising money for charity (慈善机构); helping in a park; or even carrying someone’s shopping home. Volunteering not only helps others, it also has advantages for your own well-being.
Volunteering can lower stress and make you feel better about your life. It also teaches you some important skills, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving and task planning. You will need these skills in your workplace when you grow up. Many teenagers offer to teach and say that they have found the job they wanted to do all their lives. Volunteering has other advantages too, such as improving self-confidence and making friends.
So, what could you do?
There are many ways to volunteer. Think about what you like as well as what you would like to try. If you love sports, you can help coach younger players. If you want to protect the environment, then join a litter-picking group. Many teenagers happily spend many hours helping at an animal shelter near their home. Eve, aged seventeen, helped out at a food bank near her home. She said giving food to people who were less lucky made her feel happy and proud.
Don’t forget that you already have lots of knowledge (知识), skills and energy that could be really useful to the team you volunteer with. Organizations (组织) report that teenagers bring new ideas and help them do things that would be impossible without young volunteers. You can get a lot out of volunteering, and you have a lot to give, too. So why not give it a try?
41.What does volunteering mean?
42.According to the passage, what skills will you need in your future workplace?
43.How did Eve feel about her volunteer work?
44.If possible, what volunteer work would you like to do? Why? (Give at least two reasons.)

It was a rainy evening in a small town in southern China. A heavy rainstorm hit the mountain road, and a large rock fell onto the highway, blocking half of the road.
Li Wei, a 38-year-old truck driver, was driving home with his 10-year-old daughter after a long day’s work. He was driving slowly on the right lane when he noticed two cars ahead suddenly disappear around the curve. Knowing something was wrong, he slowed down and stopped his truck right away.
After getting out of the truck, Li Wei saw the huge rock blocking the road. His truck was only 10 meters away from the danger. “If I had kept driving, we would have hit the rock for sure,” he said later. Li Wei didn’t hesitate. He asked his daughter to stay in the truck and call the police, while he tried to stop the coming cars.
At first, he used his truck’s warning lights and waved his arms, but some drivers didn’t see him in the rain. Two cars almost hit the rock because they were driving too fast. Then Li Wei took out his bright flashlight and stood in the middle of the road, waving and shouting loudly to every car that came by.
