We can't remember clearly since when we started to take our mobiles to a dinner table.Once a dish
comes, instead of lifting our chopsticks,we take out our 1 and click.Later,we post the photos onto
Weibo or WeChat, waiting to be "liked".Then we check our mobiles from time to time during the meal,to
see whether we get“liked”or not..
Does that sound 2 to you?Do you do that often? If not,how do you 3 when others do that when
having dinner with you?
A recent study suggests that what we are 4 to doing is not so good.Spending time taking photos of
5 makes the food less pleasant. To test this, some researchers did an experiment. Some people were asked
to take photos before they could enjoy food.As a result,it showed that the more photos they take, the less
delicious the food seemed to them.
Besides the scientific result, there are also some other 6 influences of taking photos of food before
meals. After 7 the photos onto the Internet, one will not be able to control himself and check his mobile
many times."Does everyone like my photos?I hope a lot of people like them!"It seems that your mobile
secretly calls your name all the time, even when you are with real people.
So,next time you 8 with your family or friends, how about not taking photos of food?Let the food be
delicious as it is,and 9 your life with people around you.Trust me,it will be a 10 time.

Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists recently found that they were used
in historic paintings,too.
To keep Danish (paintings,a group of researchers studied what ancient paint was made form.
They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the original()
artwork.
56
According to their research, grains and yeast (were found on the base of the paintings.
Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent grains
and yeast. The study showed that they were used to provide a stable ()painting surface.Researchers
also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a"glue"because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the
paint can also dry faster.
Besides beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as
Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci.A recent study published in Nature Communications may have "cracked"
the secret of how eggs can help keep artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (to oil paint. They then looked
into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the yolk's proteins helped slow the oxidation (
of the paint. They could also make the paint smoother.
However, the oil pant with added egg usually takes longer to dry.It seemed fine for artists-they were
willing to accept to have their work kept for longer.
"The more we understand how artists chose and used their materials, the more we can realize what they
were doing",Ken Sutherland,an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago,US,told Science News.Sutherland
added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.

When considering the kind of experience that makes life better, most people first think that happiness
depends on experiencing pleasure:good food, good jobs, all the comforts that money can buy.If we couldn't
57
have these,we might as well sit in front of the television on a quiet evening.
Pleasure is an important part of the quality of life, but by itself it doesn't bring happiness. When people
think further about what makes a worthy life, they tend (to move beyond pleasant memories and
begin to remember other events, other experiences that overlap(与…部分重叠)pleasurable ones but fall
into a group with a separate name:enjoyment.Enjoyable events take place when people have not only satisfied
a need or met some earlier expectation, but also achieved something unexpected.
Enjoyment is characterized by a sense of curiosity,of achievement.Playing a tennis game that improves
one's ability is enjoyable,as is reading a book that shows things in a new light,as is having a conversation that
leads us to express ideas we didn't know we had.None of these experiences may be especially pleasurable
when they are taking place, but when we think back on them afterwards,we would say."That really was fun"
and wish they would happen again. After an enjoyable event we know that we have changed, and grown.
Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different. For
example, everybody takes pleasure in eating. However,to enjoy food is more difficult-you have to pay
enough attention to a meal,so as to sense and tell its various tastes. As this example suggests,we can
experience pleasure without any psychic energy, while enjoyment happens only as a result of full attention.
A.person can feel pleasure without any effort,as long as certain parts in his brain are stimulated ()But
it's impossible to enjoy a tennis game or a book without full attention. It's for this reason that pleasure does not
last long, nor does it make us grow.Growth requires full attention to goals that are new, that are relatively
challenging.
Without enjoyment, life will go on,and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily on luck and the
external ()environment.To achieve personal control over the quality of experience, however,we need
to learn how to build enjoyment into what happens day in,day out.
()16.You will most probably experience enjoyment when you
A.buy expensive shoes
B.order a delicious meal
C.talk with friends for new ideas
D.sit quietly in front of a television
)17.What do you know about pleasure and enjoyment from the passage?
A.Enjoyment grows out of pleasure.
B.Pleasure and enjoyment come hand in hand.
C.Pleasurable experiences are part of enjoyable ones.
D.Some experiences provide both pleasure and enjoyment.
(
)18.The words "psychic energy"in Paragraph 4 are closest in meaning to
A.attention
B.interest
C.ability
D.knowledge
(
)19.Which of the following will the writer probably agree?
A.Pleasure is the key to a happy and worthy life.
B.A worthy life depends on luck and environment.
C.Feeling enjoyment comes with achieving growth.
D.Feeling pleasure stops people from achieving growth.
58
)20.Where is the text probably taken from?
A.In a diary.
B.In a magazine.
C.In a news report.
D.In a science fiction.

One day a professor entered her classroom and told her students about a test. The students took their seats
and waited for the test to begin. The professor put a test paper on each student's desk with the text facing
down. She then said they could turn the paper over and begin.
The students didn't expect to see no questions, but just a single black dot in the centre of the paper. The
professor said,"I just want you to write down what you see on this paper.
The students did as they were told.At the end of class, the professor took their tests and started reading
their answers aloud. Each student tried to describe the black dot-its size, its position on the paper. After the
professor finished reading, the class was silent.
She started to explain,"Don't worry. There is no right answer to this test. But I want you to think about
something.Imagine that this paper represents your life. The white area represents all of your life experiences-
the black dot just stands for the bad things you've gone through.Life gives us many things-loved ones,
enjoyable moments, and even miracles (from time to time. And yet our eyes are always captured by
the black dot in our life. Our problems and difficulties can beat us.
"From now on,I want you to think about the big picture more often.Don't just focus on the black dots in
your life.Remind yourself how lucky you are sometimes."Hearing this, the students finally understood the

第二节短文填空(六选五)
A.Researchers did a scientific test to find the answer.
B.Audiobooks have become quite popular these days.
C.Young people are more likely to choose audiobooks than the old.
D.However, you can listen to audiobooks anytime and anywhere you like.
E.One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks,we need to deal with several tasks.
F.The result showed that listening to audiobooks makes almost the same parts of the brain active as reading
does.
When you go to the park, you might notice many older people listening to audiobooks (instead
of reading paper books.26.Why are more and more people choosing audiobooks over traditional books?
Is listening to an audiobook just as useful as reading a book?
Reading needs us to pay attention to the words in the book, and we also need to find time and a place to
sit down and read.27.At the same time,it gives your eyes a break.
But the big question is,do we get knowledge from audiobooks as effectively(有效地)as we do from
paper books?28.Volunteers in Group One were asked to listen to an audiobook while volunteers in
Group Two read a book of the same article. It turned out that they remembered the same amount (of
information, whether they listened to it or read it.
Another study further supported the result above. In the study, researchers studied people's brains when
they listened to and read books.29.
However, some people still believe that we learn better from reading paper books.30.If we're
trying to learn while doing two things,we're not going to learn as well.
