My priceless heritage from my father is a box of yellow pencils. Some are barely used, some are worn-down, but each is unfailingly functional. They remind me of his love of solving crossword puzzles. They remind me of him sitting by the window, bathed in morning light, carefully filling in their tiny boxes.
In his 80s, my father would read the day’s newspaper cover to cover, with a pleasant smile on his face. “What are you reading that’s so funny, Dad?” I would ask. “Oh, nothing. I don’t pay much attention to the news. But reading reminds me of forgotten words that help me solve the crossword. Ah, got it! 12-D, CLASH!”
When he read the papers, our dog would curl up beside him, enjoying his soft touches for an hour or two, which left me free to write without being bothered by it. He would gladly put his paper down to engage with curious grandchildren, telling them stories about language, people and places. More importantly, he would listen. It’s a good life lesson for the little ones, as they grew to appreciate that not all grown-ups are pushy or impatient. In addition, he would live his life quietly helping people, never forgetting those who had lent him a hand. He believed that more wealth did not mean greater happiness, and that no kindness should be undervalued.
While my father used words for love, I did the same for a living as a professional writer. He understood this, and that may have been why he never asked me to suggest a word or help him with a puzzle. For him, my words were precious; each held value. Actually, I learned the worth of my work through his love for word puzzles. It did not matter how much I got paid for my writing. I wrote because I loved words and I enjoyed writing stories that brought ideas to life, often for or about non-profits.
24. Why is a box of yellow pencils mentioned?
A. To introduce the father’s hobby.
B. To stress the tool’s value.
C. To show the father’s collection.
D. To express the past regret.
25. Why did the author’s father read the newspaper page by page?
A. To read stories for amusement.
B. To know the latest news.
C. To find words to solve puzzles.
D. To kill his boring time.
26. Which can best describe the author’s father?
A. Humorous and outgoing. B. Patient and helpful.
C. Creative and ambitious. D. Grateful and strict.
27. Which is the suitable title for the text?
A. My Love for Crossword Game.
B. My Father’s Yellow Pencil Box.
C. My Gains from Word Puzzles.
D. My Father’s Crossword Magic.
A 25. C 26. B 27. D
根据第一段“My priceless heritage from my father is a box of yellow pencils. Some are barely used, some are worn-down, but each is unfailingly functional. They remind me of his love of solving crossword puzzles. (我从父亲那里得到的无价之宝是一盒黄色铅笔。有些几乎没用过,有些已经磨损,但每支都功能完好。它们让我想起他喜欢解填字游戏)”可知,这盒黄色铅笔让作者回忆起父亲酷爱解填字游戏。由此可推知,作者提及这盒铅笔,是为了引出父亲的爱好。故选A项。
I don’t pay much attention to the news. But reading reminds me of forgotten words that help me solve the crossword. Ah, got it! 12-D, CLASH! (“哦,没什么。我不太关注新闻。但阅读让我想起那些有助于我解填字游戏的遗忘的单词。啊,想到了!12-D,冲突!”)”可知,父亲把报纸从头读到尾,是为了找到那些遗忘的单词来完成填字游戏。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“He would gladly put his paper down to engage with curious grandchildren, telling them stories about language, people and places. More importantly, he would listen. It’s a good life lesson for the little ones, as they grew to appreciate that not all grown-ups are pushy or impatient. In addition, he would live his life quietly helping people, never forgetting those who had lent him a hand. (他会很高兴地放下报纸,与好奇的孙子们互动,给他们讲关于语言、人和地方的故事。更重要的是,他会倾听。这对小家伙们来说是一堂很好的人生课,因为他们逐渐意识到,并不是所有的成年人都咄咄逼人或缺乏耐心。此外,他会默默地帮助别人,永远不会忘记那些帮助过他的人)”可知,作者的父亲很有耐心,乐于助人。故选B项。
【27题详解】

During this year’s Spring Festival, Mount Taishan introduced wearable robotic exoskeletons (外骨骼) designed to assist hikers, making the demanding climbing more accessible especially for elderly and physically-challenged visitors. One 68-year-old tourist reported immediate relief from leg pain and a sensation of being assisted uphill, confirming the device’s practical effectiveness.
The 1.8-kilogram exoskeleton, co-developed by the Taishan Cultural Tourism Group and Shenzhen-based Kenqing Technology, wraps around the waist and thighs (大腿). Powered by artificial intelligence, it senses the wearer’s pace and movement to provide real-time assistance, effectively reducing tiredness and joint pressure. Officials stated that the exoskeletons were introduced specifically to enable elderly visitors to experience the mountain’s natural beauty firsthand, as traditional cable cars often limit scenic immersion. This innovative application has generated broader discussions about the technology’s potential in addressing elderly care challenges within China’s rapidly aging society.
The newest data reveals that by the end of 2024, China had 310 million citizens aged 60 or above, accounting for 22% of the total population. This proportion is projected to rise to 30% by 2035. Recognizing this vast market, Kenqing Technology has developed a dedicated lightweight exoskeleton system for elderly users, integrating advanced sensors and motion control to assist with walking, running, and climbing. The company plans to release an upgraded model this year, featuring lighter materials and more intelligent algorithms (算法) for better adaptability.
Government policy actively encourages this sector’s development. National guidelines promote new models of intelligent health and elderly care, support the use of service robots, and foster the assistive recovery device industry. Industry experts and company executives agree that such policy support, combined with market forces, is essential to achieve large-scale adoption. They emphasize that widespread use will ultimately reduce production costs, making these assistive technologies more affordable for families across the country.
28. According to paragraph 1, what is one reported effect of using the exoskeleton?
A. Complete relief from joint pain. B. Feeling of being supported upward.
C. Immediate increase in hiking speed. D. Significant weight reduction for users.
29. The underlined word “immersion” in paragraph 2 refers to the experience of being ______.
A. visually restricted B. financially supported
C. physically surrounded D. technologically assisted
30. What is the primary reason for developing a new exoskeleton model this year?
A. To better serve elderly users’ needs. B. To target younger hiking enthusiasts.
C. To compete with cable car companies. D. To reduce government policy reliance.
31. What is the government’s attitude towards the future of robotic exoskeletons?
A. Uncertain. B. Dismissive. C. Concerned. D. Supportive.
B 29. C 30. A 31. D

Scientists have known that sperm whales communicate through patterns of clicks known as codas. These sounds are not random. Instead, they form complex sequences that whales use when interacting with members of their family groups. Yet the real meaning of these signals has long remained a mystery. Hidden within the ocean’s depths is a communication system far more complicated than researchers once imagined. Many experts believe that such a system may even include something similar to a basic language, but no one has been able to fully figure it out so far.
To solve this long-standing puzzle, scientists have turned to AI for help. By feeding thousands of whale recordings into advanced computer models, scientists have begun to detect patterns that human ears alone could never recognize. Similar to the way large language models learn patterns in human speech, AI systems can analyze enormous collections of whale codas and identify repeating structures within them. In early experiments, these systems were able to predict the type of coda and even identify which whale produced it with remarkable accuracy.
Inspired by these results, researchers launched Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), an international collaboration bringing together marine biologists, linguists, engineers and computer scientists to interpret the communication system of sperm whales. By combining underwater recording devices with powerful AI models, the team hopes to map the hidden structure of whale sounds and eventually understand how whales exchange information.
If successful, the project could transform how humans understand animal intelligence. Not only might it reveal that whales possess a complicated communication system, but it could also show that language-like structures exist far beyond the human world. In this sense, AI may become more than a technological tool. Properly used, it could help humans listen, perhaps for the first time, to the voices of another species.
32. What can we learn about sperm whales’ codas from paragraph 1?
A. They can only be heard in the deep ocean.
B. They are simple signals for daily communication.
C. They carry meanings that are waiting to be explained.
D. They differ greatly from other sea animals’ sound patterns.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A. The importance of large language models.
B. The process of collecting whale recordings.
C. The role AI plays in studying whale codas.
D. The achievements in whale protection research.
34. What does the author say about Project CETI?
A. It has solved the mystery of animal intelligence.
B. It aims to make whale research a separate discipline.
C. It helps develop advanced underwater recording devices.
D. It may improve human understanding of animal language.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. AI: A Bridge to Sperm Whales’ Hidden Communication.
B. Sperm Whales: Creatures with Special Languages.
C. New Discoveries in Ocean Ecosystem Protection.
D. International Efforts to Study Ocean Animals.
C 33. C 34. D 35. A

通读全文,根据第二段“By feeding thousands of whale recordings into advanced computer models, scientists have begun to detect patterns that human ears alone could never recognize. Similar to the way large language models learn patterns in human speech, AI systems can analyze enormous collections of whale codas and identify repeating structures within them. In early experiments, these systems were able to predict the type of coda and even identify which whale produced it with remarkable accuracy.(通过将数千条鲸鱼的记录输入先进的计算机模型,科学家们已经开始检测出仅凭人类耳朵永远无法识别的模式。与大型语言模型学习人类语音模式的方式类似,人工智能系统可以分析大量的鲸鱼尾音,并识别其中的重复结构。在早期的实验中,这些系统能够预测尾音的类型,甚至能够以惊人的准确性识别哪只鲸鱼产生了尾音。)”可知,本文围绕借助人工智能破解抹香鲸的交流之谜展开,A项“人工智能:通往抹香鲸隐秘交流的桥梁”最能概括文章主旨,适合用作标题。故选A。

空后下文“Research suggests that loneliness increases the risk of heart disease, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure and even early death.”(研究表明孤独增加得心脏病,焦虑,绝望,高血压以及过早死亡的风险。)可知是针对孤独的研究,而空前“Experts praise the virtues of social connectivity. It’s linked to better resistance to stress and even longer life.”(专家表扬社交联系的重要。 可知空前没有提到孤独,所以空处需引出孤独这个话题,结合选项,只有C项“Being alone, on the other hand, is often associated with loneliness.”(另一方面,独处常常和孤独联系在一起)与下文一致,故选C项。
空前“Experts praise the virtues of social connectivity. It’s linked to better resistance to stress and even longer life. ___1___ Research suggests that loneliness increases the risk of heart disease, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure and even early death.”(专家表扬社交联系的重要。 可知,空前是讲社交联系的好处,独处的坏处,而空后“Doing things by yourself allows you to enjoy activities you love at your own pace and in your own way.”(自己独自做事情允许用自己的步伐和自己的方式去做一些你喜欢的活动。)是在讲述独自做事情的好处,空前后句意相反,所以空处需要表转折的句子,结合选项,E项“ However”表转折,且后半句“research is increasingly showing that doing things alone does pay off.”
空处位于句首,是段落主题句,空后“It is an important part of self-development. It allows you to get to know yourself.”(这是自我发展的一个重要部分。 以及最后一句“Taking time on your own gives you a critical opportunity to make creative choices and focus your attention without worrying about what other people are thinking.”(花时间在你自己身上是给你一个重要的机会去做一些创造性的选择并且只关注你自己不用担心别人在想什么。)可知本段主要讲述自己独自做事情的好处,结合选项,B项“Being alone gives you time to focus on your interests.”(独处给你时间专注于你的兴趣)与本段文意相符,故选B项。
空后“But research has found that people are often better at solving difficult problems when they work on their own.”(但是研究已经发现当人们在独自工作时,他们更擅长解决难题。)可知,空处语意需与空后意思相反,且结合最后一句“solo work encourages creativity without added social pressure.”(自工作鼓励创造性没有额外的社会压力)可知,本段是针对创造性讲的,F项“Brainstorming together”与空后work on their own相反,且generate new ideas产生新想法与下文creativity一致,故选F项(集体思考通常被认为是产生新想法的最佳方式之一)。
综合全文看,文章主要讨论social connectivity和being alone这两个话题,且空前“Having friendships and a strong social support system is important for your mental health and well-being.”(拥有友谊和一个强大社会支持体系对你的精神健康和身体健康是很重要。) But being alone occasionally may make you appreciate those connections even more.(但偶尔的独处会让你更加珍惜这些联系)符合语境,故选G项。

Growing up with ADHD (注意缺陷多动障碍), I struggled all the time to concentrate. If a subject didn’t grab my interest, my brain simply shut down. The frustration of not being able to absorb information made school extremely difficult.
By high school, I had fallen so far behind that attending class seemed pointless. My grades were always at the bottom and publicly posted for all to see, which fueled my shame and anxiety. Eventually, I began skipping classes. No one seemed to care about my potential, and I certainly didn’t see it myself.
Everything began to change when my teacher. Ms. Carter, found me hiding in an empty classroom, writing down my struggles and making drawings in a notebook one day. Ms. Carter watched me quietly for a while before gently saying, “You know, you have a real talent in writing. Why not try writing for the school newspaper?” I had never considered writing for others to see. Hesitantly, I agreed to give it a try. At first. I contributed small pieces, but over time, I took on more responsibility and became an editor.
One day, after a particularly well-received edition, Ms. Carter smiled and said, “You’ve come so far - I’m proud of you.” At her words, I felt my self-confidence rise to new heights. For the first time, I saw myself as bright and smart.
As my confidence grew, so did my expectations about the future. Ms. Carter encouraged me to consider college. All I needed to do was prepare a personal statement that showed my strengths, goals, and why I was a good fit for the college. Despite the push forward, there was still a cloud of uncertainty in the back of my mind. I expressed my thanks to Ms. Carter but said I would think about it.

When college applications opened, I hesitated. The thought of applying seemed daunting, given my past struggles and the low expectations I had always held for myself. However, I remembered Ms. Carter’s words of encouragement and the sense of accomplishment I had felt as an editor for the school newspaper. Taking a deep breath, I decided to face my fears and submit my application, hoping that my passion for writing and the growth I had experienced would shine through. Finally, my application was approved.
I called Ms. Carter as soon as I got the good news. My voice trembled with excitement as I shared the news of my acceptance letter. Ms. Carter’s joy was palpable through the phone line; she congratulated me warmly and reminded me of how proud she was of my progress. I realized that with the right support and encouragement, I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Ms. Carter had been my guiding light, and I couldn’t wait to embark on this new chapter of my life, ready to face the challenges and opportunities that awaited me.

A. Uncertain. B. Dismissive. C. Concerned. D. Supportive.
