The Joy of Helping a Friend
Last month, my deskmate Tom was very upset. He failed his math exam and didn’t know what to do. He told me that he couldn’t understand the teacher’s explanations in class. I decided to help him.
Every afternoon after school, we sat together at the library. I explained the math problems to him slowly, using simple words. When he made a mistake, I didn’t laugh. I just showed him the right way again. Sometimes he still felt confused, but I never gave up on him. We practiced for two weeks.
Finally, Tom passed the next math exam with a good grade. He ran to me with a big smile and said, “Thank you! I couldn’t have done it without you.” Seeing his happy face, I felt a warmth in my heart. I was even happier than when I got a good grade myself. I learned that helping others brings real joy. Giving is truly better than receiving.

Finding Mimi
Last Saturday afternoon, I saw my elderly neighbor, Mrs. Li, walking slowly in the garden. Her eyes were red, and she looked very sad. I went over and asked what was wrong. She told me that her little cat, Mimi, had been missing since the night before. Mimi was old and couldn’t see very well.
Without thinking twice, I said, “Don’t worry. I’ll help you find her.” I searched everywhere — under the bushes, behind the trash cans, and along the street. I called “Mimi, Mimi!” softly again and again. After about an hour, I heard a tiny “meow” coming from under a big parked car. I lay down on the ground and saw Mimi hiding there, shaking. I carefully pulled her out and carried her home.
When Mrs. Li saw Mimi, she hugged the cat and then hugged me. Tears of joy ran down her face. “Thank you, dear. You are an angel,” she said. I felt a warmth spreading in my chest. That day, I learned that helping others in need brings a happiness that no toy or game can ever give.
