Last year, my English teacher asked us to read the classic novel Robinson Crusoe. At first, I thought it was just a common story for kids, and I had little 21 in it. I always loved short stories and funny videos, so a long novel seemed 22 and tiring. But my teacher smiled and said, “This book will change your mind. It’s not just a story, but a lesson about life and courage.” I decided to follow her advice and gave the book a try.
On the first night, I planned to read only ten pages, but I was so attracted that I couldn’t put it down. The writer told the story of Robinson Crusoe, a young man who loved adventures and wanted to see the 23 places in the world. He left his comfortable home and went to sea with a big dream. Unluckily, a strong storm destroyed his ship, and all the other sailors died. He was the only person alive and was washed up on a small, lonely island with no houses, no people, and not much food.
Life on the island was 24 difficult than he could imagine. He had to face hunger, illness, bad weather, and even wild animals. But he never lost hope. Every morning, he got up early to 25 food. He learned to grow corn, make tools and build a strong house to 26 himself from danger. He wrote diaries every day to drive away from 27 and record his hard life.
What touched me most was his strong mind. He worked 28 than anyone else to improve his life. He never gave up even in the 29 situation. Several years later, he saved a man from some bad men and 30 him Friday. They became close friends and helped each other. 31 , a passing ship saved them and took them back home.
This book has become one of my 32 books in my life. It tells us that life is full of difficulties, but we must be brave enough to face them. I will 33 this lesson deep in my heart. I hope more teenagers can 34 good reading habits and enjoy the fun of great books. Thanks to this book, I will keep trying to become the 35 version of myself.

In late November, a very special comic book (漫画书) was sold for $9.12 million. It’s the first issue (期) of the comic book series (系列) Superman. It was found in an attic (阁楼) last December, and now it’s the world’s most expensive comic book.
Superman is one of the most famous superheroes of all time. The character was created by two high school students, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Superman’s first comic book series came out in 1939. It was called Superman#1. Though it’s very common now, at that time, no comic book had ever focused on just one superhero. It was a sign of how popular Superman was, and how much the character would affect the comic book world.
In December, 2024, three brothers found a copy (副本) of Superman#1 and some other comics in their mother’s attic. She and her brother had led a simple life growing up in the 1930s and 1940s. But buying and reading cheap comic books was something they really enjoyed.
The brothers knew that their mother had a collection of comic books, but they had never seen the collection. The brothers only found them when they were clearing out their mother’s house after she died. They found the comics in a cardboard box in the back of the attic. The comics had been protected by some old newspapers.
Even though it was over 80 years old, the copy of Superman #1 was in excellent condition. Heritage Auctions, the group that sold the comic, said it was the most well -kept copy of Superman #1 that they’d ever seen.
In the end, the comic was sold for $9.12 million. That’s the highest price ever paid for a comic book. Lon Allen, who works for Heritage Auctions, said he was very excited about the sale.
Over nine million dollars is a lot of money for a comic book that only cost 10 cents when it first came out. But some things help make this copy of Superman #1 valuable. First is its excellent condition. Another important point is that the brothers’ copy came from the first printing of the comic.
The brothers say the sale isn’t just about a special comic book. They say it’s about “family, and the unexpected ways the past finds its way back to us.”
41.Who created the Superman character?
A.Two college teachers. B.Two high school students.
C.Two famous writers. D.Two movie directors.
42.Where did the three brothers find the comic book?
A.In their father’s room. B.In their mother’s attic.

43.Which is NOT a reason why the comic is so valuable?
A.Its excellent condition. B.It is from the first printing.
C.It was found by three brothers. D.It is the world-famous Superman #1.
44.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The brothers had seen the comic collection many times before. .
B.The comics were not protected by anything.
C.This Superman comic is the world’s most expensive comic book.

Stephen, a Frenchman, now fills his life with Chinese elements (因素): practicing qigong, visiting ancient towns, going to local markets, and chatting with friends in Mandarin (普通话).
“Twenty-five years ago, when I first came to China, I couldn’t speak a single word of Chinese. Now, my friends call me ‘China Hand’,” said the 65-year-old Stephen.

Can you imagine students managing their own library? That’s exactly what a group of students at Kensington Health Sciences Academy (KHSA) in the USA did.
Some years ago, the high school had no library. A determined group of students decided to take action and solve the problem themselves. They raised $1,000, bought a rolling cart (手推车), and collected free books from their community. They pushed the cart through the hallways to encourage students to read.
Their big break came when they won $20,000 in a local contest (比赛). With the prize money, they turned their small cart into a real library in a small room. They named it the Dream Escape Library. They hoped it would be a place for students to dream and escape (逃避) into books.
Their story touched the community, and help poured in. Thanks to the help, their library grew into a bright room. Now it is filled with everything from thousands of books to tables, comfortable chairs and computers.
The students do all the work. They open the library after school, organize books and help classmates find good reads. Now, the library is open for about an hour after school, three days a week, but the students have a plan. They hope it is open during lunchtime to reach more students.

Reading is one of the best habits a person can develop. It is like a key that opens the door to a whole new world. For middle school students, reading not only improves their language skills but also enriches their knowledge and shapes their personality. However, many teenagers spend too much time on phones and computer games, and they hardly have time to read books.
A recent survey was done among 500 eighth-grade students in our city. The result shows that only 35% of students keep a weekly reading habit. About 40% of students read books only when their teachers ask them to do homework. The rest of the students almost never read extra books after school. Most students said they had no time for reading because of too much schoolwork. Some others thought reading was boring and playing online games was much more fun.
In fact, reading can help us relax after busy study. When you read a storybook, you can forget your stress and troubles for a while. Reading history books lets us know more about the past and learn lessons from history. Reading science books opens our eyes to the magic of nature and technology. What’s more, reading can improve our writing ability. The more we read, the better we can write articles.
Parents and teachers should guide teenagers to form good reading habits. Schools can set up reading corners and hold reading sharing activities every month. Parents can set a good example by reading with their children at home every evening. Choosing interesting books that students like is also a good way to make them fall in love with reading. Never think reading is a waste of time. It is the most valuable investment in our life.

54.Why do many students hardly read extra books?

③ Like reading very much ④ Spend time on games
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④

A.Keeping us busy. B.Wasting our free time.

Audiobooks (有声书) are becoming more and more popular with young people. They are a great way to enjoy stories and discover amazing writers without reading a printed book.
The NLT (The National Literacy Trust), a charity (慈善机构), encourages people to read. Recently, it carried out a study about audiobooks. The result showed that in 2025, more than two fifths of young people enjoyed listening to audiobooks or podcasts in their free time. Almost all the children in the study said that listening to stories made them more interested in reading books.
Listening to audiobooks can also help people feel better. The research found that more than half of the listeners said audiobooks or podcasts helped them relax. Audiobooks make them feel calmer when they are stressed (有压力的) or worried.
Another advantage of audiobooks is that people can enjoy them in many situations. They can listen to them alone or together with friends or family. For example, audiobooks are perfect for listening during long car journeys or quiet evenings at home.
Today, there are many ways to get audiobooks. Some online platforms offer thousands of audiobooks for people to listen to. Public libraries also lend audiobooks for free, so everyone can enjoy great stories anytime and anywhere.

“Twenty-five years ago, when I first came to China, I couldn’t speak a single word of Chinese. Now, my friends call me ‘China Hand’,” said the 65-year-old Stephen.

The result showed that in 2025, more than two fifths of young people enjoyed listening to audiobooks or podcasts in their free time.
