In an age of digital distraction, speed is celebrated. We skim news headlines, scroll social media, and jump between texts, treating reading as a task to finish quickly rather than an experience to enjoy. 1 Yet a quiet movement called slow reading is encouraging people to rediscover the depth and joy of reading at a gentle pace.
Slow reading is the practice of engaging with a text mindfully, taking time to understand ideas, appreciate language, and reflect on meaning. It contrasts sharply with speed reading, which prioritizes quantity over quality, and digital reading, which encourages skimming and multitasking. 2 It is a richer, more meaningful way to interact with written words. When we read slowly, we activate deeper parts of the brain involved in analysis, empathy, and reflection.
The rise of digital media has made slow reading harder to practice. Screens are designed for quick consumption, with hyperlinks, notifications, and short paragraphs that discourage deep focus. 3 This “digital attention deficit(缺失)” affects learning, work, and mental well-being.
4 It applies to any text, from articles to poems. Simple techniques can help anyone adopt the practice: setting aside dedicated time without devices, reading aloud, taking notes, and pausing to reflect on key points. These small changes turn reading from a hurried chore into a calming, rewarding activity.
The slow reading movement is not against technology or progress. It simply reminds us that reading is a human experience, not a performance criterion. By slowing down, we reconnect with the power of words to inspire, challenge, and transform us. In a fast-paced world, slow reading is not just a skill. 5 .
A.It is a form of self-care.
B.Slow reading is not just for books.
C.It reduces stress and improves mental clarity.
D.Advocates argue that slow reading is not inefficient.
E.A wide range of content is easily accessible on digital devices.
F.This rushed approach weakens comprehension, memory, and critical thinking.
G.Many people admit failing to read a long article or book without feeling restless.
【答案】1.F 2.D 3.G 4.B 5.A
1.前文“We skim news headlines, scroll social media, and jump between texts, treating reading as a task to finish quickly rather than an experience to enjoy.(我们浏览新闻标题,滚动社交媒体,跳转阅读各种信息,把阅读当作一项要尽快完成的任务,而非一种值得享受的体验。)”
2.前文“It contrasts sharply with speed reading, which prioritizes quantity over quality, and digital reading, which encourages skimming and multitasking.(它与注重数量而非质量的快速阅读以及鼓励略读和多任务处理的数字阅读形成了鲜明对比。)”
3.前文“Screens are designed for quick consumption, with hyperlinks, notifications, and short paragraphs that discourage deep focus.(屏幕的设计旨在实现快速浏览,其中包含超链接、通知以及简短的段落,这些都不利于深度专注。)”提到数字媒体设计本身不利于深度专注,G选项“Many people admit failing to read a long article or book without feeling restless.(许多人承认,他们在阅读长篇文章或书籍时难以不感到焦躁不安。)”
4.空后“It applies to any text, from articles to poems.(它适用于任何文本,从文章到诗歌)”提到它适用于任何文本,B选项“Slow reading is not just for books.(慢阅读并非只适用于书籍)”和后文内容完美对应,衔接紧密。
5.空格处是最后一句,应该是总结升华,前文“In a fast-paced world, slow reading is not just a skill.(在这样一个快节奏的世界里,缓慢阅读已不仅仅是一种技能。)”

Life is an incredible journey, and your teenage years are one of its most exciting chapters. 1 You are stepping into adulthood! Greater independence brings more opportunities to shape your own path. This is the perfect time to learn, explore, and understand yourself better. Equipped with knowledge and self-awareness, you can make thoughtful decisions that will build a meaningful future.
You might feel certain about your dreams, or you might still be searching for your passion. 2 Stay curious, keep learning, and the right path will gradually reveal (显现) itself to you.
3 It’s natural to seek more privacy and personal space. However, remember that your family remains a source of love and support. While becoming your own person, try to balance growing independence with gratitude and connection. At this stage, friendships often take center stage — choose friends who uplift and inspire you. 4
This phase is a bridge between youth and adulthood. Some people will walk alongside you for years, while others may only share part of the journey. Goodbyes — like leaving school — can be bittersweet, but each connection teaches you something valuable.
You are now the author of your life. No one can write it for you. Every choice you make from this point forward is yours. 5 Life is a gift — live it with purpose, kindness, and joy!
A.Either is completely normal.
B.You have the strength to handle them.
C.Value the friends who encourage you to grow.
D.Therefore, choosing wisely becomes your responsibility.
E.A genuine friend supports you through ups and downs.
F.Growing up brings both new freedoms and new responsibilities.
G.Your family has been your first and longest-lasting support system.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.F 4.E 5.D
1.根据 空 前“Life is an incredible journey, and your teenage years are one of its most exciting chapters. (人生是一场不可思议的旅程,而你的青少年时期是其中最激动人心的篇章之一)”可 知,上文在积述青少年阶段。空后“You are stepping into adulthood! Greater independence bringsmore opportunities to shape your own path.(你即将步入成年!更大的独立性带来更多塑造自己道路的机会)”开始引出变化与挑战,因此此处需一句承上启下、给予信心的话。B项 “You have the strength to handle them.(你有能力应对它们)”中“them”指代前文暗示的变化与挑战,自然衔接并鼓励读者, 符合语境。
2.根据 空 前“You might feel certain about your dreams, or you might still be searching for your passion.(你可能对自己的梦想很确定,也可能仍在寻找自己的热情所在。)” 空后“Stay curious, keep learning, and the right path will gradually reveal (显现) itself to you. (持好奇,持续学习,正确的道路会逐渐向你展现)”则给出了无论哪种状态都应采取的行动。因此,此处需一个过渡句,表明两种状态都是可接受的。A项“Either is completely normal.(两者都完全正常)”准确总结了前文,并为后文的建议铺平道路,符合逻辑。
3.此处为本段主题句。根据下文“It’s natural to seek more privacy and personal space. However, remember that your family remains a source of love and support. While becoming your own person, try to balance growing independence with gratitude and connection. At this stage, friendships often take center stage — choose friends who uplift and inspire you.(追求更多隐私和个人空间是很自然的事。
E项“A genuine friend supports you through ups and downs.(真正的朋友会陪你经历起伏)”具体阐述了真正朋友的特质,与前文 “选择朋友” 的建议形成递进,逻辑连贯。
5.空前“Every choice you make from this point forward is yours.(从现在起,你的每一个选择都属于你自己)”强调人生选择由自己决定。 D项“Therefore, choosing wisely becomes your responsibility.(因此,明智选择成为了你的责任。)”

As a child growing up there are many different paths available to navigate one’s way through adolescence into adulthood. I was fortunate to have had the guidance of my father, who had many hobbies in his life. 1 He loved talking about them to anyone who would listen.
2 I was always looking for pennies — whether given as change or picked up off the ground — and checking to see if they were “Wheaties”, pennies made from 1909 to 1958. Some Lincoln Wheat Cents were quite valuable, but for me, the real joy was the search itself.
My father passed away last week. Although he will be missed, there is no sadness in his passing. He lived nearly 97 years of a full and meaningful life. During his final moments, I whispered in his ear that I needed a sign after he left us. 3
The next day, my sister and I were going through his old clothes when something fell out and hit the floor — it was a 1928 Wheat penny. There was no way to know how long it had been there. Some might call it a coincidence. 4 The fact that it was also a Wheat penny proved what I already knew — it was him. It could have easily been put aside with the clothes, but it found its way to me.
Later, I was talking to my neighbor and told him the story. 5 However, a few days later, he came over with a bag of pennies he had. Inside it, he found two more 1928 Wheat pennies — one for each of my sisters. Our father is no longer with us, but he is still here.
A.He passed the habit on to me.
B.I figured he wouldn’t think any more of it.
C.To me, it was my father handing me the coin.
D.Old coins carried the quiet weight of the past.
E.Collecting coins was one of his greatest interests.
F.It specifically involved a 1928 coin — the year he was born.
G.His soft words and warm hands supported me through my youth.
【答案】1.E 2.A 3.F 4.C 5.B
1.根据上文“I was fortunate to have had the guidance of my father, who had many hobbies in his life.(我很幸运有父亲的指导,他一生中有很多爱好)”以及下文“He loved talking about them to anyone who would listen.(他喜欢跟任何愿意听的人谈论它们)”可知,此处应引出父亲的某一个爱好,E选项“Collecting coins was one of his greatest interests.(收集硬币是他最大的爱好之一)”承上启下。
2.根据下文“I was always looking for pennies — whether given as change or picked up off the ground — and checking to see if they were “Wheaties”, pennies made from 1909 to 1958.(我总是在找便士 —— 无论是作为零钱得到的还是从地上捡来的 —— 并检查它们是否是“小麦币”,即1909年至1958年制造的便士)”可知,父亲将收集硬币的爱好传给了“我”,A选项“He passed the habit on to me.(他把这个习惯传给了我)”符合语境,引出下文。
3.根据上文“During his final moments, I whispered in his ear that I needed a sign after he left us.(在他最后的时刻,我在他耳边轻声说,他离开我们后,我需要一个信号)”可知,此处应说明“我”需要的信号是什么,F选项“It specifically involved a 1928 coin — the year he was born.(这个信号具体是一枚1928年的硬币 —— 他出生的那一年)”承接上文说明信号的具体内容。
4.根据上文“The next day, my sister and I were going through his old clothes when something fell out and hit the floor — it was a 1928 Wheat penny. There was no way to know how long it had been there. Some might call it a coincidence.(第二天,我和姐姐在整理他的旧衣服时,有东西掉了出来,掉在地上 —— 是一枚1928年的小麦便士。无法知道它在那里放了多久。有些人可能会称之为巧合)”以及下文“The fact that it was also a Wheat penny proved what I already knew — it was him.(而它也是一枚小麦便士这一事实,证明了我已经知道的事情 —— 是他)”可知,此处应体现“我”对这枚硬币的不同看法,C选项“To me, it was my father handing me the coin.(对我来说,这是父亲递给我的硬币)”呼应下文it was him,符合语境。
5.根据上文“Later, I was talking to my neighbor and told him the story.(后来,我和邻居聊天,把这件事告诉了他)”以及下文“However, a few days later, he came over with a bag of pennies he had. Inside it, he found two more 1928 Wheat pennies — one for each of my sisters.(然而,几天后,他带着一袋自己的便士过来了。在里面,他又找到了两枚1928年的小麦便士 —— 给我每个姐姐一枚)”可知,“我”原本以为邻居不会把这件事放在心上,B选项“I figured he wouldn’t think any more of it.(我以为他不会再想这件事了)”符合语境,与上下文逻辑紧密。

How to Appreciate A Classic
Classics are often seen as books read by literature majors or intellectuals. They seem rather exclusive and distant. 1 The classics and I began as acquaintances, grew to be friends, and finally became close confidantes (密友) with private jokes between us. So how does one approach a classic?
Find your classic era. The term classic applies to a wide range of books across a long period of time. 2 Not every classic is as thick as Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Like all forms of literature, there are genres (类型) within the classics selection of a bookstore. By finding your era, there’s always something that may appeal to you.
Read slow and get immersed. Classics aren’t written in our modern tongue. They bear clear traces of the time when they were published. Given the challenges involved, I suggest reading your first classic slowly. 3 It’s like immersing yourself in a different world. It would take a few interactions to get the hang of it, but you do get it eventually.
4 Once immersed, you rather get a hang of the language, and it is best to read another one. Maybe read a book from the same author. In this way, the next book becomes easier to read. The ease in the language and the context is reward itself and may motivate you to read more classics.
Try again. If the first classic you got was a miss, find another one. You can even start with thinner books like Peter Pan or a child’s classic such as Alice in Wonderland or even Anne of Green Gables. Don’t jump from “I don’t read classics” to “The Brothers Karamazov” all too suddenly. 5
Once you employ the proper methods and proceed step by step, you will come to appreciate the joy of reading classics.
A.Learn more about the author.
B.Reading classics requires pacing.
C.Follow through with another classic.
D.My love for classics was a gradual affair.
E.Many classics also teach us valuable life lessons.
F.Allow yourself to adapt to the book and the language.
G.It’s wrong to assume that all classics are created equal.
1.根据上文“Classics are often seen as books read by literature majors or intellectuals. They seem rather exclusive and distant. (经典常被视为文学专业学生或知识分子阅读的书籍。它们显得相当排外且遥远。)”可知,这里描述了大众对经典作品“高不可攀、有距离感”的普遍印象。下文“The classics and I began as acquaintances, grew to be friends, and finally became close confidantes with private jokes between us. (经典与我始于相识,发展为朋友,最终成为可分享私人玩笑的亲密知己。)”以作者自身经历为例,描述了与经典作品从生疏到亲密的关系演变。D选项“My love for classics was a gradual affair. (我对经典的热爱是一个渐进的过程。)”承上启下,表达了作者对经典作品态度转变过程,符合题意。该选项中的“gradual affair”直接对应了下文作者与经典作品关系的逐步发展。
2.根据上文“Find your classic era. The term classic applies to a wide range of books across a long period of time. (找到你的经典时代。“经典”一词适用于跨越漫长时期的各种书籍。)”可知,本段核心是“经典涵盖范围广,时期长”,建议读者找到自己喜欢的时代。下文“Not every classic is as thick as Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Like all forms of literature, there are genres (类型) within the classics selection of a bookstore.(并非每本经典都像托尔斯泰的《安娜·卡列尼娜》那么厚。就像所有文学形式一样,书店里的经典作品也有不同的类型。)”是在进一步说明经典的多样性(篇幅、体裁),从而支持“找到你的时代/喜好”这一观点。因此,本空需要一个句子,能承接“经典范围广、时期长”,并进一步强调经典的差异性。G选项“It’s wrong to assume that all classics are created equal. (认为所有经典都是一样的,这是错误的。)”进一步说明了经典的多样性,并引出了下文关于经典作品差异性的讨论。
3.根据上文“Given the challenges involved, I suggest reading your first classic slowly. (考虑到其中涉及的挑战,我建议你的第一本经典要慢慢读。)”可知,本段核心建议是“慢读”,以应对经典语言的挑战。下文“It’s like immersing yourself in a different world. It would take a few interactions to get the hang of it, but you do get it eventually. (这就像沉浸在一个不同的世界里。需要几次互动才能掌握要领,但你最终会掌握的。)”描述了沉浸式阅读的效果和过程。F选项“Allow yourself to adapt to the book and the language. (让自己去适应这本书和它的语言。)”解释了“慢读”的具体做法或目的,并与“沉浸、掌握”联系起来。
4.本题是选择段落小标题。根据本段内容“Once immersed, you rather get a hang of the language, and it is best to read another one. Maybe read a book from the same author. In this way, the next book becomes easier to read. The ease in the language and the context is reward itself and may motivate you to read more classics. (一旦沉浸其中,你大致掌握了语言,最好再读一本。也许读同一作者的书。这样,下一本书会变得更容易读。语言和背景的轻松感本身就是一种回报,并可能激励你阅读更多经典。)”可知,本段的核心建议是在成功读完一本经典、适应其语言后,应趁热打铁,继续阅读另一本经典(尤其是同作者的),以巩固阅读能力并形成良性循环。C选项“Follow through with another classic. (接着读另一本经典。)”完美概括了本段主旨,其中的“Follow through (继续/接着做)”体现了行动的连续性,与段内“read another one”、“the next book”等表述高度一致。
5.根据上文“Don’t jump from ‘I don’t read classics’ to ‘Brother Karamazov’ all too suddenly. (不要突然从“我不读经典”跳到《卡拉马佐夫兄弟》。)”可知,这里警告读者不要好高骛远,一开始就挑战难度过高的经典。本段标题是“Try again. (再试一次。)”,强调的是如果第一次尝试不成功,不要放弃,应选择其他合适的经典重新开始。B选项“Reading classics requires pacing. (阅读经典需要循序渐进。)”能对上文的警告进行总结或补充,重申循序渐进、选择合适起点的原则。符合题意。

We get frustrated all the time. The line won’t move. The WiFi won’t work. From life’s biggest goals to its tiniest annoyances, frustration is in our daily life.
1 Unlike anger, which often targets an external cause, or stress which can arise from too many demands, frustration happens when things are not progressing in the way you anticipate. Now scientists are uncovering its surprising upside. Frustration can be transformed into motivation, pushing people to optimize solutions to overcome difficulties. So how can we employ the unexpected upsides of feeling frustrated?
· 2
Instead of seeing frustration as failure, view it as evidence that you’re being challenged at the right level. For example, academic tests will grow more difficult as you perform better — that’s because you are good enough. 3
·Acknowledge obstacles to be functional.
The first step is being aware that everything has roadblocks — work, learning a new hobby, or even re-learning the skill you once mastered. Frustration is an input to (not a side effect of) our pursuits. 4 If you know this in advance, you will anticipate obstacles, which can motivate self-growth, especially when you are told they are necessary parts of progress.
·Analyze the signal from the situation.
When faced with frustration, try to analyze the signal conveyed by the situation. This initial analysis helps you avoid being overwhelmed by negative emotions. 5 In this way, frustration is no longer a roadblock but a stepping stone toward personal growth.
Keep in mind that by reflecting on the obstacles, learning from the experience and applying the gained knowledge to subsequent challenges, you can truly benefit from frustration.
A.Look on frustration from a different angle.
B.Regard frustration as an academic challenge.
C.There is a reason for the existence of frustration.
D.Furthermore, you will center on practical solutions.
E.On a regular basis, it’s not going to get you to feel right at first.
F.Therefore, such a struggle isn’t a setback but proof of personal growth.
G.In short, frustration is of vital significance in developing our hands-on ability.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.F 4.E 5.D
1.下文“Unlike anger, which often targets an external cause, or stress which can arise from too many demands, frustration happens when things are not progressing in the way you anticipate.(与通常指向外部原因的愤怒,或是由过多需求引发的压力不同,挫败感产生于事情未按你预期的方式发展时。)”
2.下文“Instead of seeing frustration as failure, view it as evidence that you’re being challenged at the right level.(不要把挫败感看作失败,而要将其视为你正面临恰当难度挑战的证明。)” 故选A。
3.上文“For example, academic tests will grow more difficult as you perform better — that’s because you are good enough.(例如,随着你表现越来越好,学科测试会变得更难——这是因为你足够优秀。)”
4.上文“Frustration is an input to (not a side effect of) our pursuits.(挫败感是我们追求目标过程中的一种投入,而非副作用。)”点明了挫败感在追求目标过程中的正向属性,下文“If you know this in advance, you will anticipate obstacles, which can motivate self-growth.(如果你提前明白这一点,就会预见障碍,这能推动自我成长。)”
5.上文“When faced with frustration, try to analyze the signal conveyed by the situation. This initial analysis helps you avoid being overwhelmed by negative emotions.(面对挫败感时,试着分析处境所传递的信号。这种初步的分析能帮助你避免被负面情绪压垮。)”点明了面对挫败感时分析处境信号的做法,以及该做法的第一个积极作用——摆脱负面情绪的困扰。下文“In this way, frustration is no longer a roadblock but a stepping stone toward personal growth.(通过这种方式,挫败感不再是障碍,而是个人成长的垫脚石。)”

Human personalities are typically sorted into two categories: the introverted (内向的) and the extroverted. Introverts prefer quiet reflection, while extroverts lean toward lively interactions. These differing tendencies shape distinct behaviors, often causing misunderstandings. Thus, it is vital to understand them.
Introversion and extroversion are at opposite extremes, yet most people fall somewhere in between. 1 For instance, people often become more introverted as they age, a shift driven by changes in motivation, energy levels, and lifestyle. Context also plays a crucial role. Someone who lacks regular social interaction might become outgoing in a new environment. 2 Instead, recognize their dynamic personalities shaped by time and circumstance.
When a friend’s behavior unsettles you, first trace the root to their basic nature, which naturally shapes their everyday actions. An introvert may perceive a private question as impolite, while an extrovert might intend friendliness with it. 3 In this way, a solid bond can be formed.
Since these character differences easily cause tensions, open dialogue becomes crucial when conflicts arise. 4 And since this is a shared effort, you and your friend must both speak up. If you’re more introverted, you can request pauses to share your ideas; if your friend is more extroverted, he can focus on listening more, which fosters balanced interaction.
5 Introverts do well in quiet reflection, offering others a sense of calm and ease. Extroverts, by contrast, shine with energy, lifting spirits and breaking the stillness. This is why we should embrace each friend with an admiring mindset. We must reject rigid labels, honor differences, and bridge gaps through respect.
A.Personality styles are never fixed.
B.The first step is to clearly voice your needs.
C.However, these conflicts can be worked out.
D.Such misunderstandings don’t come from rudeness, just differences.
E.Given these differences, set aside judgment and respect these distinctions.
F.Every personality, whether introverted or extroverted, has remarkable strengths.
G.Therefore, avoid labeling friends simply as absolute “introverts” or “extroverts”.
【答案】1.A 2.G 3.D 4.B 5.F
1.上文“Introversion and extroversion are at opposite extremes, yet most people fall somewhere in between.(内向和外向处于两个相反的极端,但大多数人都介于两者之间)”指出大多数人的性格并非处于极端位置,A选项“Personality styles are never fixed.(性格类型从来不是固定不变的)”承接上文,进一步说明性格不仅分布连续,而且具有动态变化的特征;下文“For instance, people often become more introverted as they age, a shift driven by changes in motivation, energy levels, and lifestyle.(例如,随着年龄增长,人们往往会变得更内向,这种转变是由动机、精力水平和生活方式的改变驱动的)”通过举例具体说明性格如何随时间变化,与A选项中的“never fixed”相呼应。
2.上文“Context also plays a crucial role. Someone who lacks regular social interaction might become outgoing in a new environment.(环境也起着关键作用。
3.上文“An introvert may perceive a private question as impolite, while an extrovert might intend friendliness with it.(内向者可能认为私人问题不礼貌,而外向者则可能以此表达友好)”分析了同一行为因性格不同而产生的理解差异,D选项“Such misunderstandings don’t come from rudeness, just differences.(这种误解并非源于无礼,仅仅是差异所致)”承接上文,对这种差异进行了定性——不是礼仪问题,而是性格差异;下文“In this way, a solid bond can be formed.(这样,就能建立起牢固的关系)”说明正确理解这种差异后的积极结果,上下文语意连贯。
4.上文“Since these character differences easily cause tensions, open dialogue becomes crucial when conflicts arise.(由于这些性格差异容易引发紧张关系,当冲突出现时,开放的对话变得至关重要)”指出冲突发生时开放对话的重要性,B选项“The first step is to clearly voice your needs.(第一步是清晰地表达你的需求)”承接上文,具体说明了开放对话的第一步该做什么——说出自己的需求;下文“And since this is a shared effort, you and your friend must both speak up.(而且由于这是双方共同的努力,你和你的朋友都必须说出自己的想法)”进一步强调双方都应表达自己,与B选项中的“voice your needs”形成递进关系。
5.下文“Introverts do well in quiet reflection, offering others a sense of calm and ease. Extroverts, by contrast, shine with energy, lifting spirits and breaking the stillness.(内向者擅长安静地反思,给他人带来平静和轻松的感觉。相比之下,外向者充满活力,振奋精神,打破沉寂)”分别阐述了内向者和外向者各自的优点,F选项“Every personality, whether introverted or extroverted, has remarkable strengths.(每种性格,无论是内向还是外向,都有显著的优势)”指出内外向性格都各具优势,准确概括了下文主旨,上下文语意连贯。

For years, I kept a careful distance from the people around me. Living in a busy city apartment, I learned to move through shared spaces quietly. 1 It wasn’t that I disliked others; keeping to myself just seemed easier. Independence mattered to me, and needing no one felt like part of being a grown-up.
2 Without warning, the power went out. The building fell into complete darkness. I sat alone in my apartment, the cold air pressing in as my phone went dead. The silence was familiar. Yet this time, it seemed different. Less comforting. More exposed.
A soft knock broke the stillness. It was my neighbour from 3B, someone I recognised but hardly knew. She held a candle and mentioned that a few residents were gathering in the hallway and invited me to join them. I hesitated. Staying alone felt safe, but something felt unsettled. 3
People sat on the floor, sharing blankets, tea, and quiet conversation. I listened more than I spoke. The man I had once assumed was unfriendly turned out to be a retired doctor with a dry sense of humour. 4 I realized how easily distance can turn into detachment (疏离).
When the lights finally returned, the hallway looked the same, but it felt different. I didn’t suddenly become outgoing, nor did I abandon my need for space. 5 It’s about knowing when to let them in. Now, when I step into the elevator, I don’t automatically lower my eyes. Sometimes, I look up.
A.After a moment, I stepped outside.
B.I avoided eye contact and unnecessary conversation.
C.I began to question my decision to join the conversation.
D.Most neighbours in the building kept to themselves as well.
E.As the night progressed, my long-held belief began to loosen.
F.But I understood something new: maturity isn’t about shutting others out.
G.That belief was challenged one night when a violent storm swept through the city.
【答案】1.B 2.G 3.A 4.E 5.F

Ways to Boost Your Self-Discipline
Contrary to popular belief, self-discipline does not come along by denying yourself something or being strict with yourself. 1 . In other words, it is a positive effort, not one of denial or negativity. This is how you get there.
Set clear goals so when it comes down to it, you can think first, and act later. When you have knowledge that a greater reward is at stake (得失难料), you are going to have an easier time letting go of immediate satisfaction. 2 . When following this process, you will think twice before acting on a sudden urge.
Motivate yourself to win and remember that life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you. Anxiety arises from the belief that you are not in control of your life circumstances but are a victim of them. Change your mindset to being a victor of your life. 3 .
Know your triggers and control the stress response. Certain situations, people or even foods will cause your stress response to be triggered. 4 . Who and what causes you to feel impulsive It could be lack of sleep, or it could be a tendency to feel overly criticized by your boss. By knowing your triggers, you can either avoid them or develop ways to deal with them.
5 . Either invite friends or family members to join you or ask for their support to remind you of your long-term goals. The key here is that no one is allowed to criticize you or cause you to feel guilt or shame. Instead, they are to remind you to love yourself and help you get back on track when you slip up.
A.Your job is to pay attention.
B.Seek some reliable partners.
C.Ask for some critical reviews.
D.It is about loving yourself and developing new habits.
E.It will help you follow your heart and improve your performance.
F.That will set the stage for you to regain your power and your inner motivation.
G.Then you can prioritize your list according to what you want to achieve in the future.
【答案】1.D 2.G 3.F 4.A 5.B
1.上文“Contrary to popular belief, self-discipline does not come along by denying yourself something or being strict with yourself.(与普遍看法相反,自律不是通过克制自己或对自己严格来实现的)”说明自律并非人们以为的那样。空处需承接上文,对自律进行正确定义,且与后文“In other words, it is a positive effort, not one of denial or negativity.(换句话说,它是一种积极的努力,而不是否定或消极的)”相呼应。
2.上文“Set clear goals so when it comes down to it, you can think first, and act later. When you have knowledge that a greater reward is at stake (得失难料), you are going to have an easier time letting go of immediate satisfaction.(设定明确的目标,这样关键时刻你可以先思考再行动。当你明白更大的回报悬而未决时,你就更容易放弃即时满足)”说明设定目标的好处。空处和前文为顺接关系,进一步说明设定目标后的具体做法。G项“然后你可以根据未来想要实现的目标来排列优先级。”符合语境,该项中的Then与上文“Set clear goals”形成逻辑递进,符合语境。
3.上文“Motivate yourself to win and remember that life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you. Anxiety arises from the belief that you are not in control of your life circumstance but are a victim of them. Change your mindset to being a victor of your life.(激励自己去赢,记住生活不是发生在你身上,而是为你而发生的。焦虑源于你认为自己无法掌控生活环境而是受害者。改变心态,成为生活的胜利者)”说明要从受害者心态转变为胜利者心态。空处和前文为顺接关系,说明这种心态转变带来的结果。F项“这将为你重新获得力量和内在动力奠定基础。”符合语境,该项中的That指代上文“Change your mindset to being a victor of your life”。
4.上文“Know your triggers and control the stress response. Certain situations, people or even foods will cause your stress response to be triggered.(了解你的诱因并控制压力反应。某些情况、人甚至食物会触发你的压力反应)”说明要了解触发压力的因素。空处和前文为顺接关系,进一步说明具体做法。下文“Who and what causes you to feel impulsive?(谁和什么让你感到冲动?)”
5.下文“Either invite friends or family members to join you or ask for their support to remind you of your long-term goals.(要么邀请朋友或家人加入你,要么请求他们的支持来提醒你的长期目标)”说明要寻求他人帮助。且后文“The key here is that no one is allowed to criticize you or cause you to feel guilt or shame.(关键是不允许任何人批评你或让你感到内疚或羞愧)”说明这些人应该是可靠的、支持性的。 符合语境,适合总领全段,与下文内容完全呼应,其中reliable与“no one is allowed to criticize you”相匹配。

Have you ever taken a personality test? If you’re like me, you’ve consulted BuzzFeed to discover which Taylor Swift song perfectly matches your soul. 1 But even some “serious” personality tests used to guide educational and career choices are also problematic. They assume your personality is fixed — implying you’re forever stuck with the personality you’re born with.
But modern personality research suggests that personality can and does change over time. 2 If you shift your mindset to believe that “being on time shows respect”, take pride in arriving early, and develop consistent habits like setting an alarm, you are changing. If you maintain these changes in your thoughts, emotions and behaviors over time — voila! — you are reliable. Personality: changed.
Data confirms this idea. Generally, personality changes across a person’s life span. As people age, they tend to experience fewer negative emotions and more positive ones. They are more responsible, more positive, and are less judgmental of others. 3 You can accelerate this transformation through intentional cognitive-behavioral changes.
First, you must examine your thinking patterns. For example, if you believe that “people only care about themselves,” you are more likely to act defensively. This leads to the second step: changing your behavior. If you are always defensive, others might snap at you or walk away. This only confirms your belief that you can’t trust others. 4 If you try behaving more openly — perhaps sharing your difficulties with a co-worker — you may see that they respond with kindness. This positive experience helps change your outlook.
In the end, these strategies work because your personality is simply your usual way of thinking and acting. 5
A.To break this cycle, try a new response.
B.But you don’t have to wait for time to do the work.
C.Suppose, for instance, you’re not super dependable.
D.It might be obvious that such quizzes are not scientific.
E.Some people change a lot and some people hold pretty steady.
F.You may believe they describe you accurately, even when they don’t.
G.By making small, daily changes, you can craft the personality you desire.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.B 4.A 5.G
1.前文“Have you ever taken a personality test? If you’re like me, you’ve consulted BuzzFeed to discover which Taylor Swift song perfectly matches your soul.(你是否曾经做过性格测试?如果像我一样,你曾通过浏览BuzzFeed来找出哪首泰勒·斯威夫特的歌曲最能与你的灵魂相契合。)”提到BuzzFeed上的娱乐性性格测试,后文“But even some “serious” personality tests used to guide educational and career choices are also problematic.(但即便是那些用于指导教育和职业选择的“严肃”性格测试也存在一些问题。)” D 选项“It might be obvious that such quizzes are not scientific.(可能很明显这类小测验并不科学。)”
2.前文“But modern personality research suggests that personality can and does change over time.(但现代性格研究表明,性格是可以而且确实会随着时间而改变的。)”提出“性格可以改变”的核心观点,后文“If you shift your mindset to believe that “being on time shows respect”, take pride in arriving early, and develop consistent habits like setting an alarm, you are changing.(如果你转变思维模式,认为“准时意味着尊重”,为早到的行为感到自豪,并养成诸如设置闹钟之类的习惯,那么你就是改变了。)” C 选项“Suppose, for instance, you’re not super dependable.(比如,假设你不是特别可靠。)”
3.前文“Generally, personality changes across a person’s life span. As people age, they tend to experience fewer negative emotions and more positive ones. (一般来说,一个人的性格在其一生中会有所变化。随着年龄的增长,人们往往会经历较少的负面情绪,而更多积极的情绪。)”说明性格会随年龄自然变化,后文“You can accelerate this transformation through intentional cognitive-behavioral changes.(你可以通过有意识的认知行为改变来加速这一转变。)” B 选项“But you don’t have to wait for time to do the work.(但你不必等待时间来完成这项工作。)”
4.前文“For example, if you believe that “people only care about themselves,” you are more likely to act defensively. This leads to the second step: changing your behavior. If you are always defensive, others might snap at you or walk away. This only confirms your belief that you can’t trust others.( 例如,如果你认为“人们只关心自己”,那么你更有可能采取防御性的态度。这就引出了第二步:改变你的行为。如果你总是采取防御姿态,别人可能会对你发脾气或者走开。这只会进一步证实你认为自己无法信任他人的想法。)”描述了“消极思维→消极行为→更消极思维”的恶性循环,后文“If you try behaving more openly — perhaps sharing your difficulties with a co-worker — you may see that they respond with kindness.(如果你尝试更加坦诚地表现——比如与同事分享你的困扰——你可能会发现他们会以友善的态度回应。)” A 选项“To break this cycle, try a new response.(要打破这个循环,尝试一种新的回应方式。)”
前文“In the end, these strategies work because your personality is simply your usual way of thinking and acting.(最终,这些策略之所以有效,是因为你的个性其实就是你通常的思考和行为方式。)” G 选项“By making small, daily changes, you can craft the personality you desire.(通过每天做出小小的改变,你可以塑造出自己想要的性格。)”

Self-reflection is a mindful practice of turning your attention inward to observe your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It needn’t be long. In fact, quick pauses bring powerful insights. 1
Do a morning intention check. Before you jump into your day, take a moment to ask yourself, “What is one thing I want to focus on today?” For example, you might decide, “Today, I’ll focus on being patient” or “I’ll stay calm.” 2 Instead of reacting automatically, you’re more aware of your goal.
Enjoy mindful moments during the day. Pause briefly to check in with yourself. 3 It could be when you are waiting in line, or even just before replying to a message. Ask yourself, “How am I feeling right now?” For example, you might notice tension building before a meeting or realize you’re feeling distracted. Acknowledging these feelings helps you stay grounded and make conscious choices. These small mindful moments connect you to yourself during chaos.
4 At the end of your day, take a few minutes to reflect. Ask yourself questions like, “What went well today?” and “What could I have done differently?” For instance, you might realize you handled a difficult conversation better than expected, or left a project until the last minute. This reflection isn’t about judgment; it’s about learning and growth.
Self-reflection is a simple yet powerful habit that can transform the way you understand yourself and manage life. If you’re new, don’t overdo it. 5 Additionally, trust that every thoughtful pause brings you closer to a more mindful and fulfilling life.
A.Conduct an evening review.
B.Engage in nighttime learning.
C.It could be during a coffee break.
D.Just start small and be patient with yourself.
E.Below are easy examples you can try anytime.
F.This tiny pause can replace casual reactions with thoughtful responses.
G.The key is to avoid distractions and stay focused on the present moment.
