Whatever your taste, there’s a food festival to match — no matter how specialized. Meatopia This three-day, London-based festival takes place at the end of August and is a meat lover’s paradise. In addition to a range of legally sourced meat products, from juicy burgers to tender steaks, attendees can listen to live music, watch butchery demonstrations, and attend informal meat-based workshops. The National Honey Show If you have a sweet tooth, then it could be that the National Honey Show, which started in 1921 and is the largest event of its kind, is the place for you to be. This three-day event attracts many local entries who showcase their sweet golden honey, some of which is sold globally. The Orange Sauce Festival Have you heard about a festival that is devoted only to orange sauce? Held in Cumbria, this sweet, fragrant festival has been running for 3 years. What attracts people most is a competition to find the best homemade orange sauce. There are thousands of participants from over 30 different countries across the globe, bringing their local snacks to share here. The Ginger and Spice Festival If you’d prefer something with a little more kick to it, then you could attend The Ginger and Spice Festival held in Market Drayton. Unlike other food festivals, it celebrates its town’s historic connection to Robert Clive, who returned from India with ginger. Because of this, they specialize in baking gingerbread, but also sell a range of traditional spices from mild to hot. 21. What do Meatopia and the National Honey Show have in common? A. They are of the same duration. B. Both of them hold workshops. C. Both of them have a long history. D. Both of them originated from London. 22. Which festival is most attractive to a competition lover? A. The Meatopia. B. The National Honey Show. C. The Orange Sauce Festival. D. The Ginger and Spice Festival. 23. What is the text probably taken from? A. A business report. B. A history textbook. C. A travel guidebook. D. A food advertisement. B In today’s world, it can feel difficult to concentrate when your smartphone buzzes (嗡嗡响) every minute or two with reminders about updates, messages and much more. How can anyone get through a 500-page book when our brain is addicted to bite-sized content? Gloria Mark, professor at the University of California, has spent much of her career analysing how this affects us. She has used sensors to track attention duration on screens. When the studies started, in 2004, screen attention duration was about two-and-a-half minutes, but recently, has dropped to 47 seconds. According to Prof Mark, there were “a lot of things” that had made people more distracted. “When you switch your attention duration so rapidly, there are more errors. It takes longer to do any task and people get more stressed.” Aside from making us perform tasks less effectively, the ease with which we get distracted by one thing or another on the internet also means that we can waste time that could be spent on activities considered more worthwhile. People who have attention disorder tend to have less grey matter in brain’s parietal cortex (顶叶皮层), highlighted Nilli Lavie, professor of psychology and brain sciences at University College London. “We see greater grey matter volume in certain regions of the brain for people with a better attentional capacity,” Prof Lavie said. The good news is that while research has indicated that in today’s world we switch our attention more often than in the past, this change is not thought to have become hard-wired in our brains. “The solution is simple: first, decide to focus, then use strategies to remove distractions,” Prof Lavie said. Related to this, one strategy is to set an alarm that will go off after, for example, 20 minutes. And Prof Mark advises people to look ahead to the end of the day and to consider how they might spend time then, such as relaxing on the sofa after completing their work. “I want to feel accomplished because I’ve done my work,” she said. “That can help people stay on track.” 24. What is the main problem described in paragraph 1? A. People find it a struggle to focus. B. Bite-sized contents are addictive. C. Long passages are outdated. D. Smartphones often disturb people. 25. What can we know about the online distractions? A. They cause permanent changes to human brain. B. They have similar influences on different people. C. They increase the possibility for people to make errors. D. They offer people convenience to deal with various affairs. 26. What does Prof. Mark advise in the last paragraph? A. Set frequent alarms to take short breaks. B. Create a flexible timetable to work efficiently. C. Visualize after-work leisure time to keep daily focus. D. Seek a relaxing environment to minimize distractions. 27. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Save Your Brain to Stay Relaxed B. Can We Reclaim Our Lost Focus? C. Why Are We Losing Concentration? D. Bite-sized Reading Ruined Our Brains C If a stranger knocked on your door asking for using your phone, would you help? How about lending them five dollars for the bus, if they said they’d return and pay you back? Nowadays, many people find it hard to trust strangers. A recent study found that our ability to trust strangers may be more than just a social or psychological characteristic — it could be rooted in our DNA. This is important, as it turns out that trusting people might actually live longer and healthier lives compared to more skeptical (怀疑的) people. Two main theories have appeared to explain why some people are more trusting than others. One suggests trust is a stable characteristic shaped by early life experiences. The other thinks it’s influenced by a person’s ongoing evaluation of the social environment. We can easily imagine that the answer to the question “Would you say that most people can be trusted?” would depend on whether you’d been robbed the day before or if you’d had your missing wallet returned. This is where the recent research comes in. A professor of Lund University, Edgerton and his coworkers have been doing research about trust. In their most recent study, involving 33,882 Danish blood donors, they found a single gene (基因) — PLPP4, strongly associated with the personality of trusting others, and that the PLPP4 gene explained 6% of the difference in social trust within the study population. If you take two people who have similar education and life experiences, this gene alone could account for 6% of the difference in how much they trust others. They believe that the PLPP4 gene may somehow soften our “fight-or-flight” survival response. If our fight-or-flight system is less strong when we meet new people, it makes sense that trusting others could have huge health benefits. Indeed, if trusting others acts as something against stress, it may lower the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease. As people continue to uncover the mysteries of trust, one thing is clear: understanding its genetic roots may hold the key to developing healthier communities in the world. 28. What might affect people’s trust levels according to the two main theories? A. Childhood habits. B. Personal abilities. C. Social experiences. D. Communication skills. 29. What does the recent study focus on? A. The mental cause of trust. B. The ways to develop survival ability. C. The characteristics of different genes. D. The connection between trust and a gene. 30. What does the passage say about trusting others? A. It could bring health benefits. B. It reduces the strong stress in work. C. It helps to develop the world faster. D. It causes quicker survival response. 31. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The ability to trust others relates to a single gene. B. How trusting you are frees people from disease. C. Your understanding of gene accounts for developed communities. D. The PLPP4 gene lays the foundation of survival response. D Many people are told that certain activities are out of the question for them, but a new invention proves that where there is a will, there is a way. Dr. Zacharias Vamvakousis has come up with a creative way to improve the quality of life for countless people through the power of music. His invention is called EyeHarp, which enables individuals to make music using their gaze (注视) instead of their hands. “EyeHarp is the first musical application that allows people with disabilities to play music with eyes or head movements,” Zacharias explains. “Using an eye tracker, you can make melodies by looking at the notes on the screen.” EyeHarp uses the same type of digital eye-tracking technology used in some computer games. But instead of using it to aim weapons at digital opponents, EyeHarp uses it to track your eyes as they stay on different musical notes on a colorful circle on your computer screen. The application allows you to play three to four notes every second. However, users have to be careful not to move their eyes too quickly from one musical note to the next. So, much like any other instrument, playing a tune takes practice and concentration. Zacharias was inspired to create the magical application after a musician friend was badly hurt in a motorcycle accident. His friend was worried he’d never be able to play his guitar again, so Zacharias decided to find a new way to make music available to him. While his friend didn’t end up needing EyeHarp, Zacharias was on a mission to help others who thought music was forever lost to them. These are people who are so disabled that they don’t have the opportunity to do many things and learning music through EyeHarp gives them happiness, the purpose and the opportunity to play music. Zacharias agreed, saying that music builds social connections and raises self-esteem. He’s currently training music teachers to use EyeHarp so they can reach even more people with disabilities. This invention has the potential for changing so many lives. Hundreds of people with disabilities have used EyeHarp. “There wasn’t any instrument they could play. But now, they’re able to make their own music,” says Zacharias. “I hope it will light up the lives of more people like them.” 32. What is EyeHarp? A. A musical instrument played with disabled minds. B. A device that helps people play music with their eyes. C. A musical game using eye-tracking technology. D. A medical tool for improving ones’eyesight. 33. For what reason did Zacharias create the appliance? A. His love for music and technology. B. A need for a new form of musical therapy. C. A desire to help his musician friend. D. A sympathy towards people with disabilities. 34. How does EyeHarp work according to the passage? A. By tracking the movement of players’ hands. B. By detecting the sound of a music note. C. By following the stay of the gaze on the screen. D. By recognizing the face of a disabled user. 35. What can we infer about EyeHarp from the passage? A. It is very difficult to play. B. It can be used by anyone easily. C. It has limited musical notes. D. It brings hope to many disabled people. Getting older means greater maturity and wisdom. ____36____ In a society that is aging fast, it has become crucial to find ways to prevent related mental and emotional disorders. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn’t afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions (荣誉奖)”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a shelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up. One summer’s day, the day before a big swim meet, I decided to tell my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. After I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, “Baby, remember these words. ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit’. Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that meet tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.” The next day, we arrived at the swim meet late, which meant that I missed my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I be allowed to swim with the older 17/18 age group. I knew she didn’t think I could win; she just didn’t want me to have taken such a long drive to get here for nothing. As I mounted the board, all the other girls looked at me. I realized that these girls were here to do one thing — beat me! All of a sudden, my grandma’s words rang in my head. “Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine.” “Yes, grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours,” I said to myself. SPLASH! 23. D. Bite-sized Reading Ruined Our Brains 【答案】24. A 25. C 26. C 27. 根据第一段“In today’s world, it can feel difficult to concentrate when your smartphone buzzes (嗡嗡响) every minute or two with reminders about updates, messages and much more. How can anyone get through a 500-page book when our brain is addicted to bite-sized content? (在当今世界,手机每隔一两分钟就会弹出更新、消息之类的提醒,嗡嗡作响,想集中注意力都难。我们的大脑都沉迷于碎片化内容了,谁还能啃得下一本500页的书呢?)”可知,该段描述人们发现集中注意力很困难的问题。故选A项。 根据第三段中“When you switch your attention duration so rapidly, there are more errors. (当你的注意力切换得如此频繁时,就更容易出现失误。)”可知,网络干扰增加了人们犯错的可能性。故选C项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“And Prof Mark advises people to look ahead to the end of the day and to consider how they might spend time then, such as relaxing on the sofa after completing their work. “I want to feel accomplished because I’ve done my work,” she said. “That can help people stay on track.” C If a stranger knocked on your door asking for using your phone, would you help? C 29. D 30. A 31. 根据第三段第一句到第三句“Two main theories have appeared to explain why some people are more trusting than others. One suggests trust is a stable characteristic shaped by early life experiences. The other thinks it’s influenced by a person’s ongoing evaluation of the social environment.(关于为何有些人比其他人更易信任他人,出现了两种主要理论。一种认为信任是一种由早期生活经历塑造的稳定特征。另一种则认为信任受个人对社会环境持续评估的影响)”可知,根据这两种主要理论,社交经历可能会影响人们的信任程度。故选C。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段第三句到最后一句“In their most recent study, involving 33,882 Danish blood donors, they found a single gene (基因) — PLPP4, strongly associated with the personality of trusting others, and that the PLPP4 gene explained 6% of the difference in social trust within the study population. If you take two people who have similar education and life experiences, this gene alone could account for 6% of the difference in how much they trust others.(在他们最近的一项研究中,他们对 33882 名丹麦献血者进行了调查。研究发现,有一种名为 PLPP4 的基因与信任他人的性格特征密切相关,并且该基因解释了研究对象群体中社会信任差异的 6%。如果选取两个有着相似教育背景和生活经历的人,仅这一基因就能解释他们对他人信任程度差异的 6%)”可知,这项最近的研究关注的是信任与基因之间的联系。故选D。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段最后一句“Indeed, if trusting others acts as something against stress, it may lower the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.(事实上,如果信任他人能起到缓解压力的作用,那么它或许还能降低患心血管疾病的风险)”可知,文章认为信任他人对健康有好处。故选A。 根据第四段最后一句“If you take two people who have similar education and life experiences, this gene alone could account for 6% of the difference in how much they trust others.(如果选取两个有着相似教育背景和生活经历的人,仅这一基因因素就足以解释他们之间 6%的信任度差异)”可知,信任他人的能力与一个特定的基因有关。故选A。 D Many people are told that certain activities are out of the question for them, but a new invention proves that where there is a will, there is a way. 32. B 33. C 34. C 35. SPLASH! I swam harder than I had ever swum before. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考答案: SPLASH! I swam harder than I’d ever swum before. As I drew my right arm back, I noticed I was tied with one person. I assumed we were battling for eighth place and I refused to finish dead last, so I added more kick on the last 200 yards. I hit the wall and looked to the left and to the right for the swimmers who had beat me, but no one was there. They must have gotten out of the water already. It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. I raised my head to see my coach screaming hysterically. My eyes followed her pointing finger and I couldn’t believe what I saw. The other swimmers had just reached the halfway point of the pool! That day, at age 15, I broke the national 17/18-year-old 400-freestyle record. I hung up my honorable mentions and replaced them with a huge trophy. “Yes, grandma, you’re right. Quitters never win and winners never quit.” 词汇激活 行为类 ①注意到:notice/observe ②设想:assume/conceive 情绪类 ①疯狂地:hysterically/like mad ②不相信:couldn’t believe/be unconvinced 【点睛】[高分句型1] As I drew my right arm back, I noticed I was tied with one person.
