Sometimes animals are so badly injured that common medicine cannot help them.
However, animal lovers can still come to save them.In Brazil,a group of them use their
knowledge of medicine and computer technology to create man-made body parts for
those injured animals.
The technology is called three-dimensional(3 D)printing, which can create all
kinds of objects from a cup to a toy truck. It takes a lot of plastic. Now a Canadian
company has solved this problem. It has invented the ProtoCycler, which can turn waste
plastic, such as bottles, into the plastic that can be used in a 3 D printer.
The Brazilian team used 3 D printing to help a poor tortoise(),Freddy.A

forest fire had burned 85%of his shell, the hardest part of his back.In other words, his
shell was nearly gone. The whole team worked together to give his another chance of
life.
First, they took photos of Freddy and a healthy tortoise with a complete shell.
Then, they used a computer program to design a new shell that would fit him exactly.A
3 D printer created the new plastic shell. After that, the finished shell was attached to

Birds don't have very large brains, but they are super clever!
Recently,researchers in New Jersey,discovered the Cooper's Hawk
(库珀鹰)can understand how to use human traffic rules to hunt,so
they hunt more easily and successfully. This was discovered by Vladimir
Dinets, who is both an animal expert and a mathematician, and his
research was published on May 23,2025,in Frontiers in Animal Behaviour.Other
studies have pointed out that birds often use human buildings and vehicles()to
help them hunt, but recognizing traffic lights is a first.
In the winter of 2021,Dinets saw a young Cooper's Hawk standing in a tree near
the traffic lights. It flew low over with the cover of stopped cars, and disappeared into
the front yard across the street.A moment later,it reappeared, catching a sparrow
)This hunt left a deep impression on Dinets. It seemed to know when the traffic
light was red.
Through continued observation(),Dinets believes it recognized traffic lights
through the buzzing sound when the red light was on at a certain time. Also, the hawk
knew that sparrows would be at a certain house because the owner put out rubbish every
day. So,the hawk used the cars which lined up to get close to the sparrows without
being seen, making it easier to catch them
八年级下册Unit5单元素养调研第2页(共6页)
This is more difficult than imagined.
The Cooper's Hawk can't see its prey()from the tree.So it has to remember
the surroundings()and work out its way. Also,it has to know that some buzzing
sounds have something to do with traffic lights. This behaviour must come from careful
calculations(计算),a great memory,and complex(复杂的)thinking skills.In a word,
to have this hunting skill needs a lot of intelligence().
Maybe other animals can do the same, but this Cooper's Hawk is the first wild
animal they've discovered. These birds fly through here when migrating(if)in
summer and winter. This means the Cooper's Hawk probably learned to do this in just a
few days or weeks.
Finally,Dinets also saw a Cooper's Hawk hunting in the same manner the following
winter(2022),and he believes it is the same hawk, now an adult. However,in the
summer of the year after that, the sound signal of the streetlight was gone, the people
living there moved away, and there were no longer any sparrows there. From then on,
until the article was published,Dinets never saw the Cooper's Hawk nearby again.
(
)16.What did the Cooper's Hawk use to judge the traffic lights?
A.Traffic lights'colours.
B.The surroundings.
C.The stopped cars.
D.The buzzing sound.

word“cover”?
A.A dust cover hung over the painting.
B.I read the magazine from cover to cover.
C.The boys used the shop as a cover for hide-and-seek.
D.Once the forest cover is destroyed, rains wash away the soil.
(
)18.How does the writer support the idea "This is more difficult than
imagined.”?
A.By offering examples.
B.By giving numbers.
C.By making comparisons.D.By presenting facts.
)19.What do we know about the Cooper's Hawk?
A.It is the first wild animal to use buildings to hunt.
B.It caught its prey with the help of the house owner.
C.It may learn the hunting skill in a short period.
D.It appeared for the last time on May 23,2025.
)20.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.A discovery about the Cooper's Hawk
B.Traffic lights'role in directing hunting
C.The influence of human life on animals

In science museums, you usually see animal specimens (lying silently. Now
they are not quiet anymore. Thanks to AI,visitors to a museum in England can talk to
them now.
The museum works with an AI company so that it is possible for people and the
natural world to communicate with each other. It brings 13 of its specimens back to life.
Visitors only need to use their smartphones to scan the QR codes()next to
the specimens to begin talking with them-either by text or voice. The animals will
reply as if they're still alive.
八年级下册Unit5单元素养调研第3页(共6页)
This is a new way for people to learn about animals. The museum wants to see how
this can help people connect with nature better.
"This is just a try using AI technology in nature science. Will it help people know
more about the specimen animals? Will it influence people's opinions about them? For
example, will people like the mouse better after hearing its voice? We are not sure,"
said Jack Ashby,a worker of the museum.
And you don't have to speak English,by the way-the animals are multilingual,
so no matter what languages you speak, the animals can talk to you in a way that's easy
for you to understand.
The project engineers hope to make people care more about the biodiversity crisis
(生物多样性危机).According to the most recent research, wildlife populations
dropped by 69%between 1970 and 2018.And animals are dying out at a faster speed.
Let's hope the new technology will be both fun and helpful.

()24.Why does the museum work with the AI company?

C.Because the museum would like to help visitors and the natural world
communicate with each other.
D.Because the museum wants to teach visitors how to use smartphones in
the museum.
(
)25.What does the writer hope the new technology will be like?
A.Interesting and useful.B.Cheap and smart.

Today,if a kind of animal is an endangered species(物种),it means there are
very few animals of that kind left on Earth. The animals could face extinction ()
26.
When a type of animal is extinct,it is gone forever.
One problem for animals is that they have fewer and fewer living places. As human
populations increase, more and more space is needed.Building houses for people to live
in makes animals leave their natural homes.Humans cut down trees to make room for
homes and houses. The animals lose their living places. They have nowhere else to go.
27.

28.
Better planning can make a difference. It is still possible to keep so
many kinds of animals in the nature parks or zoos so that they don't need to worry about
the food problem.
Another major problem is over-killing by humans.29.
So the governments
around the world must agree on laws about protecting animals. Some animals may have
large enough populations so hunting will not put them in danger, but others not.
30.
Some organizations are working hard to create living places for them.
Producing programs by governments are helping animal populations increase. We all
have to know the problem and think before we act.The things we do can have an effect
on more than just ourselves.
A.Extinction is when all the animals of that kind die
B.However, they can be helpful to the lovely animals
C.Killing animals is a world-wide problem.
D.It is also important for animals to have enough food to eat.

Dear School Newspaper,
Last month, our school held an English Week. There
were English speech contests,English plays, and many more.
Among them, the English play The Trojan Horse that I
participated in left the deepest impression on me.In the play,
we acted out the story of the clever Greeks'strategy for
defeating the Trojans by hiding soldiers inside a giant wooden
horse. It was a thrilling journey for me to portray my character
and bring this ancient tale to life.
Participating in this event has brought me many
benefits. It has greatly increased my interest in learning
English.Besides,I have become more confident when
speaking English. What's more,I have learned the importance
of teamwork.
All in all, this English Week is a valuable experience
that I will always treasure.
Best regards,
Li Hua
