Jacob Nelson stands inside his modest store in Preston, England. Outside, a line of 150 people stretches down the street. Some wait for over six hours, smartphones in hand, expectant and smiling. Surprisingly, they aren’t there for trendy hamburgers, but for an old-fashioned dish his family has sold for years: the baked potato, known locally as jacket spuds.
Not long ago, the scene was different. Jacob often stood in his quiet store, watching people pass him by for fast-food chains. To many, his potatoes were the plain and boring food of school cafeterias. Jacob realized his product “wasn’t sexy” —— it lacked the modern appeal younger customers wanted. He feared his family’ s business heritage would simply be forgotten by the modern world.
To save the business, Jacob and his brother turned to social media. They filmed their daily work, capturing the satisfying sound of crispy skin cracking and golden butter melting. These clever videos, seasoned with local humor, soon went viral online. Jacob was shocked to see teenagers from distant cities waiting at his window, eager to record their own videos of his ordinary potatoes.
His success grew into stardom—— the fame and popularity he never imagined. For Jacob, however, the real reward is the interaction with those around him. He treats regulars like old friends, sharing jokes and life stories across the counter. He even sponsors a neighborhood soccer team to give back. In a time of rising costs, his affordable meals provide a sense of regional pride, warmth and belonging.
Whether the potato boom is just a passing trend remains to be seen. But for now, the store remains a symbol of possibility. The humble potato has moved from boredom to stardom—— not through fancy changes, but by inviting a new generation to rediscover a simple, warm piece of home.
4. What does the underlined word “sexy” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Refreshing. B. Attracting. C. Healthy. D. Recyclable.
5. What did Jacob intend to do through the videos?
A. Record daily cooking. B. Show cooking skills.
C. Modernize brand image. D. Teach baking methods.
6. What does Jacob value most about his success?
A. Business expansion. B. Skill improvement.
C. Spiritual growth. D. Community bonds.
7. What can we infer about Jacob?
A. He enjoys filming cooking. B. He enjoys financial success.
C. He is creative and generous. D. He is stylish and modest.

Worrying about sleep has become common, largely because missing the uninterrupted eight-hour rest rule is seen as a highway to health disasters. Driven by such fears, many turn to sleep technology — from wearable trackers assessing quality to smart pillows promising the perfect rest. However, researchers find this constant monitoring turns a biological need into a measurable competition, making us more tired.
Kelly Baron, a researcher at Rush University Medical Center, warns of the constant pressure to reach a perfect sleep score on wearable devices. He believes people often develop insomnia (失眠) identities, labeling themselves bad sleepers simply because they fail to meet a digital target. Interestingly, a study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine reveals that about one-third of such people actually exhibit normal sleep patterns in laboratory tests. Their exhaustion, it seems, is a psychological product rather than a physical reality.
Another study by Kristi Erdal at Colorado College further suggests that our mindset around rest is crucial. Participants were given false feedback about their sleep quality. Those who were told they had a high-quality night — even if they actually slept poorly — performed better and reported better moods. By contrast, those who received negative reports showed decreased focus. This proves that it is a person’s belief about their sleep, rather than the objective truth, that affects how they perform the next day.
Underlying all of this is the reality that sleep is a natural process, not a product to be perfected. Constant monitoring shifts our focus from internal signals to digital screens. While helpful for some, the sleep industry may unintentionally teach us to distrust our own feelings. By turning rest into mere data points, we risk losing the ability to listen to what our bodies are actually telling us.
Ultimately, human biology is strong enough to handle occasional sleeplessness. The real danger lies not in lost sleep, but in the anxiety of pursuing a perfect digital score. To protect our well-being, it is time for a more relaxed attitude to the night.
8. What may be the result of constant device checking?
A. It helps to remove worries. B. Users feel more exhausted.
C. It helps to improve sleep quality. D. Users stick to eight-hour sleep.
9. What causes people to label themselves bad sleepers according to Baron?
A. Missing healthy targets. B. Doubting device reports.
C. Overrating body signals. D. Overtrusting digital data.
10. Why does the author mention Erdal’s research?
A. To argue against Baron. B. To question the accuracy of the data.
C. To prove tracking value. D. To highlight the impact of mindset.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Tracking or Feeling? B. How to Judge?
C. Data or Rule? D. What to Record?
D
Mastering a complex skill, such as playing a musical instrument or shining in a sport, does more than build a talent. It can actually reshape brain’s physical structure. To investigate whether birdwatching offers similar cognitive (认知的) advantages, Erik Wing and his team at York University studied 48 birdwatchers.
The birdwatchers, half experts and half beginners, were first shown an image of a bird for less than 4 seconds. About 10 seconds later, participants tried identifying the same bird in one of four images, each showing a different species. “We intentionally picked highly confusable bird species,” says Wing. Across 72 such trials, the performance data suggested a sharp difference: experts achieved significantly higher accuracy than beginners. This gap remained even when testing with non-local birds, proving the experts’ superior ability to process new visual information.
Beyond performance, brain scans during tasks show experts had higher activity in brain regions involved in object identification, attention, and memory. Compared to beginners, experts possessed more organized and complex brain structures, making visual processing more efficient. More importantly, these physical advantages appear to offer long-term benefits against ageing. While brain complexity naturally decreases over time, the decline was less noticeable in experts. This suggests intensive birding provides protection, effectively keeping the brain younger by maintaining its structural strength.
Yet, Wing emphasizes that birding itself isn’t magic; any hobby requiring similar sensory integration could likely produce these changes, provided the mind is consistently challenged. To really know whether the brain changes are due to birding, researchers would have to scan the brain multiple times over months.
Robert Zatorre from McGill University notes, “This suggests that maintaining brain activity through certain expertise is linked to reduced effects of ageing.” Though the idea has long been debated, Zatorre adds, “This research provides another bit of evidence in favour of the concept.”
12. What did Erik Wing’s study focus on?
A. Brain structures of musicians. B. Impact of music on the brain.
C. Impact of birding on the brain. D. Brain structures of athletes.
13. What were the participants required to do in the study?
A. Classify bird species. B. Collect visual information.
C. Group similar images. D. Identify target birds.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Beginners have more organized brains.
B. Birding weakens brain complexity.
C. Experts show slower brain aging.
D. Birdwatchers have poorer memory.
15. What is Robert Zatorre’s attitude toward the finding?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Critical.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Using digital tools helps us understand how our minds work— our cognitive processes. Recently, I have used DeepSeek to guide my thinking, which leads to a surprising conclusion. _____16_____ By reflecting our thoughts, it allows us to see our ideas from a fresh perspective.
I often start by asking AI to question my thinking. For instance, I might request an analysis that flags the difference between hard facts and my opinions. _____17_____ It reveals the hidden beliefs I hold and encourages more mindful thinking. Through this dialogue, the tool becomes a true partner in individual growth.
_____18_____ Accepting the AI’s response without our own reflection is digitally convenient but functionally useless. True learning requires personal effort. Without questioning how the response fits with our thinking, we lose the chance to sharpen our minds. It is the active engagement, not the tool itself, that creates the value.
Instead of seeing AI tools as sources of truth, we should treat them as cognitive aids. _____19_____ This provides a space to look into our inner thoughts clearly. It helps us identify our biases and improve our reasoning. By doing this, we turn digital feedback into an opportunity for self-discovery, ensuring we stay in control of the conversation.
The goal of using AI, the cognitive mirror, is not merely to obtain information quickly. _____20_____ By treating digital systems as partners, we gain a clearer view of our inner logic. This ensures that while technology may provide the answers, our human spirit of inquiry remains the driving force behind the evolution of our mental frameworks.
A. It is about saving our time.
B. The digital tool can act as a mirror.
C. The reply showcases my thinking patterns.
D. Yet having these convenient dialogues takes time.
E. It is about understanding and developing our minds.
F. We should employ them to test and challenge our ideas.
G. But the value of self growth depends on personal engagement.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It had rained for three days without stopping. The wind blew hard, and the river nearby rose higher and higher until it rushed into the streets. The water was strong and dark, carrying away trees and cars. People could only watch from far away as the flood destroyed their beautiful town. It was a frightening time that no one would ever forget.
Finally, the scary flood went away. But for people in the town, the silence it left behind was even louder than the roaring water. Many lost their beloved houses. Jeremy was one of them. His house was now nothing more than a pile of ruins. The front steps he used to jump off as a boy were gone. And more painfully, the kitchen wall, marked with pencil lines recording his height every year, was buried under broken bricks and mud. Everything that made it a “home” had disappeared, leaving only a cold, gray emptiness.
Before the storm, Jeremy's house was a wonderful place. It was a warm brick house with a pretty garden full of yellow sunflowers and red roses. Inside, the rooms were always bright and smelled like his mother’s homemade cookies. For fifteen years, this house had been their world. It was where his family celebrated birthdays and shared happy stories.
“We can rebuild the walls, son,” Jeremy’s father said softly to him. “But we can’t bring back the stories these walls told. A home is more than just a building; it’s the memories it held.”
Emma, Jeremy’s best friend, was gifted in painting and felt Jeremy’s sadness as if it were her own. She felt a strong desire to help him. Though she didn’t have bricks to build a house, she had a different kind of power — a brush that could capture the soul of what was lost.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右。
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Emma decided to paint Jeremy's house.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. D 11. A
【解析】
【导语】本文主要讲的是过度依赖睡眠追踪设备对人们身心的负面影响,以及心态比数据更重要。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Driven by such fears, many turn to sleep technology— from wearable trackers assessing quality to smart pillows promising the perfect rest. However, researchers find this constant monitoring turns a biological need into a measurable competition, making us more tired.(在这些担忧的驱使下,许多人转向了睡眠科技——从评估睡眠质量的可穿戴追踪器,到承诺完美休息的智能枕头。然而,研究人员发现,这种持续的监测将一种生理需求变成了一场可量化的竞争,反而让我们更加疲惫)”可知,频繁查看设备可能导致用户感到更加疲惫。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“He believes people often develop insomnia (失眠) identities, labeling themselves bad sleepers simply because they fail to meet a digital target.(他认为,人们往往会形成“失眠者”的身份认同,仅仅因为未能达到数字指标就自我认定为睡眠不佳者)”可知,根据Baron的说法,过度信任数字数据导致人们给自己贴上“睡眠差”的标签。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Another study by Kristi Erdal at Colorado College further suggests that our mindset around rest is crucial.(科罗拉多学院的Kristi Erdal所做的另一项研究进一步表明,我们对于休息的态度至关重要)”可知,作者提及Erdal的研究是为了强调心态的影响。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是倒数第二段“Underlying all of this is the reality that sleep is a natural process, not a product to be perfected. Constant monitoring shifts our focus from internal signals to digital screens. While helpful for some, the sleep industry may unintentionally teach us to distrust our own feelings. By turning rest into mere data points, we risk losing the ability to listen to what our bodies are actually telling us.(这一切背后的现实是:睡眠是一个自然过程,而非一个需要被完善的产品。持续的监测将我们的注意力从身体内部的信号转移到了电子屏幕上。虽然对一些人有帮助,但睡眠产业可能在无意中教会我们不信任自己的感受。通过将休息变成冰冷的数据点,我们有可能失去倾听身体真实声音的能力)”和最后一段“Ultimately, human biology is strong enough to handle occasional sleeplessness. The real danger lies not in lost sleep, but in the anxiety of pursuing a perfect digital score. To protect our well-being, it is time for a more relaxed attitude to the night.(归根结底,人体的生物机能足够强大,足以应对偶尔的失眠。真正的危险不在于失去的睡眠,而在于追求完美数字分数所带来的焦虑。为了保护我们的身心健康,是时候对夜晚采取一种更放松的态度了)”可知,本文主要讲的是过度依赖睡眠追踪设备对人们身心的负面影响,以及心态比数据更重要,因此最好的题目是A选项“Tracking or Feeling?(追踪还是感受?)”。
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Critical.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. A

1.续写词数应为150个左右。

【答案】
Emma decided to paint Jeremy’s house. She sat at her desk and closed her eyes, trying to recall every detail she remembered about Jeremy’s house. She used her brushes to bring back the yellow sunflowers and the warm brick walls. She didn’t just paint a building. She captured the happy memories of Jeremy's childhood. This wasn’t merely a piece of art. It was a magical painting specially created to heal a broken heart. As soon as it was finished, Emma instantly handed the painting to Jeremy with eagerness.
Jeremy carefully took the painting from Emma. As his eyes swept over the familiar colors, tears welled up and blurred his vision. In the painting, his home was alive again, standing proudly among the fragrant flowers. While the flood did wipe out the bricks, it couldn’t wipe away fond memories of his family. The essence of his home remained in his heart. “Thank you, Emma.” Jeremy whispered. Emma was proud that her brushes were not simply for painting, but also had the power to bring comfort, warmth and hope to people.
