B A few years ago, I resented (愤恨) how much my sense of being alive in the world was affected by my screen time, such as playing video games and reading romance novels. So I decided to draw a sketch (素描) every day. I had always wanted to draw, but I was embarrassed about starting out because I was so bad at it. One day, I finally took a notebook and a pencil and went out. I spent 10 minutes quickly drawing some cows and wild horses. It was a happy and meaningful moment. One quick, simple sketch seemed not bad for a beginner. Next, I drew our cat sleeping, then our dog running behind a mouse in our kitchen. Beside each sketch, I wrote the date and little notes. Having the pencils and sketchbooks within easy reach — in my car or lying around the house — meant these small moments built up. Within weeks what might otherwise have been buried in photos on my mobile phone became a gentle profile (档案) of my life unfolding on pages. Now, my favourite drawings are often those of people. My daughter Elizabeth is usually furious when she realizes I’m drawing her secretively. But I think the process is full of fun since I enjoy the element of danger. Will I get caught? Can I finish the drawing before she storms off? Drawing different people also helps to pass the time on long journeys instead of spending it on a screen. Art is known for being life-changing and having magic powers, and I’ve surely felt the benefits. Like most people, I am anxious about different things, but drawing makes me pay attention to the moment and brings me back to the real world, making me happier and more patient. My daughter will soon leave home for college but when I look at those drawing diaries, I know we were together when I made them. 4. Why did the author start drawing? A. She was interested in drawing. B. She decided to record daily life. C. She was attracted by online videos. D. She wanted to avoid screen control. 5. What does the underlined word “furious” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Curious. B. Annoyed. C. Nervous. D. Relaxed. 6. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To explain how to draw sketches of animals and people step by step. B. To describe how daily sketching helped the author move away from screens and find more meaning in real life. C. To argue that parents should spend less time on mobile phones and more time with their children. D. To compare the advantages of digital photos with those of paper sketches. 7. Where is the text most probably taken from? A. A personal blog post. B. A research paper. C. An introduction to a book. D. An essay on the art of drawing. C My mother-in-law asked me to climb a mountain in her rural village to find some wild treasures. We went through a tall and weedy expanse of grass, pulling ourselves up with the help of smooth bamboo trees. Weathered grey rocks dotted the tracks which are only visible to an experienced hiker. The view we were rewarded with halfway up the mountain — the colourful fields and whitewashed homes set against the deep green hills and a sky so blue that it looked digitally polished — was a side benefit of being there. Our eyes were mostly on the wild eatable plants that grew on the mountainside. We first came upon the wild mountain bamboo, a plant that was the main part of my mother-in-law’s salted bamboo shoots which, once preserved, could be used all year long in cooking. Along the way, we also encountered another precious wild food — fiddlehead ferns (蕨菜). Those delicate leaves, when stir-fried, were a tasty treat. I once purchased fiddlehead ferns at a market in the US. Yet there we were, picking this prized vegetable on our own, with only our labour as the cost. What we had collected that afternoon looked the same as any other wild mountain bamboo shoots and fiddlehead ferns I had seen before in my mother-in-law’s kitchen. And yet, they felt different to me because I had used my own hands to help pick them and carry them back down the mountain. Spending time and energy gathering these wild plants gave me a deeper appreciation of the food that ended up on the dinner table. “Many generations have kept this natural lifestyle. We depend on the mountains for our life,” my mother-in-law says. Those mountains and rivers supporting her life aren’t some (某个) abstract concept. They are right there, outside her door and within her rural village. Once I saw them from her angle that afternoon, I realized they were closer to me than I had ever imagined. 8. Why was the author asked to climb a mountain? A. To pull some bamboo shoots. B. To enjoy its beautiful scenery. C. To get some wild vegetables. D. To take some digital pictures. 9. What made the picked fiddlehead ferns different to the author? A. The fresh leaves. B. The rich nutrition. C. The input of labour. D. The help from the mother-in-law. 10. What does the author want to show by quoting her mother-in-law? A. Nature feeds villagers and sustains their life. B. Urban people want to settle down in mountains. C. Rural areas are inaccessible to some outsiders. D. Farmers dream of changing the natural lifestyle. 11. How does the author sound when telling the story? A. Humorous. B. Satisfied. C. Anxious. D. Tolerant. D The science of linguistics (语言学) may help advance our understanding of the human mind and behavior. A new study by researchers of the University of Chicago uses AI models to decide the timing of an important language milestone for children: when children are able to say something novel that they have not heard before by using a language rule. Language learning is the process where humans achieve the ability to understand and produce language, and linguistic productivity is the ability to understand and produce an unlimited number of expressions from a limited set of parts and rules. A difficult problem in describing language learning is knowing when children go beyond copying what they have heard and start producing their own organized expressions — that is, to achieve linguistic productivity, the symbol of human language. To solve this, the researchers used numerous real-world behavioral data collected over a long period of time and an AI model to make sense of the data. The behavioral data used includes records of over a million natural utterances (话语) of 90-minute communication between 64 English-learning children and their parents at home collected every four months during the ages of 14 months to 58 months, which was taken from a study published in 2014. From this great database of utterances, the team aimed to use computer models to make clear the start and development pathways of when the children started using determiner-noun combinations (结合体) in English, such as “a book” and “the book”, and more. The research team discovered that on average, children began to make productive determiner-noun combinations at the age of 30 months, which was about nine months after saying their first determiner. The researchers proved that they could computationally model the start and pathways of linguistic productivity. As to next steps, the researchers say that they can use the same model to understand the possible contributing factors that lead to the different timing and rate of productivity in the future. 12. What is the focus of the new study? A. Parents’ role in language learning. B. Children’s language development. C. AI’s application in scientific study. D. Behavioral changes among children. 13. What can be inferred about linguistic productivity? A. It stands out in using noun phrases. B. It relies on excellent listening skills. C. It shows children’s language creativity. D. It leads to faster vocabulary learning. 14. How did researchers conduct their study? A. By analyzing earlier data. B. By doing surveys on young kids. C. By reviewing related studies. D. By collecting data with AI models. 15. What will the researchers explore in the future? A. Other AI models for linguistic research. B. Practical applications of language development. C. The whole process of language learning. D. Individual differences in linguistic productivity. Many of us are so busy with our work, study and home life that there is often no time left to do something that we enjoy. D 5. B 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“A few years ago, I resented (愤恨) how much my sense of being alive in the world was affected by my screen time, such as playing video games and reading romance novels. So I decided to draw a sketch (素描) every day. (几年前,我愤恨于自己活在世上的感觉被屏幕时间影响的程度,比如玩电子游戏和读言情小说。所以我决定每天画一幅素描。)”可知,作者开始画画是因为想要摆脱电子产品的控制。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段中“My daughter Elizabeth is usually furious when she realizes I’m drawing her secretively. But I think the process is full of fun since I enjoy the element of danger. Will I get caught? Can I finish the drawing before she storms off? (我的女儿伊丽莎白意识到我在偷偷画她时,通常会很furious。但我认为这个过程充满乐趣,因为我喜欢这种危险元素。我会被发现吗?我能在她气冲冲地离开之前完成这幅画吗?)”可知,女儿发现作者偷偷画自己时会生气,furious意为“愤怒的、恼火的”,与Annoyed意思相近。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其根据最后一段中“Art is known for being life-changing and having magic powers, and I’ve surely felt the benefits. Like most people, I am anxious about different things, but drawing makes me pay attention to the moment and brings me back to the real world, making me happier and more patient. A. Humorous. B. Satisfied. C. Anxious. D. Tolerant. C 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第一段中的“My mother-in-law asked me to climb a mountain in her rural village to find some wild treasures.(我的婆婆让我去她乡下的村子里爬山,寻找一些野生珍宝)”以及第二段中的“Our eyes were mostly on the wild eatable plants that grew on the mountainside.(我们的目光主要集中在山坡上生长的野生可食用植物上)”可知,作者被要求爬山是为了获取一些野生蔬菜。 根据第三段中的“And yet, they felt different to me because I had used my own hands to help pick them and carry them back down the mountain.(然而,它们对我来说感觉不一样,因为我是用自己的双手帮忙采摘它们,并把它们搬下山的)”可知,是劳动的投入让采摘的蕨菜对作者来说不一样。 根据第四段中的““Many generations have kept this natural lifestyle. We depend on the mountains for our life,” my mother-in-law says.(“世世代代都保持着这种自然的生活方式。我们依靠大山生活,”我的婆婆说)”可知,作者引用婆婆的话是为了说明大自然滋养着村民,维持着他们的生活。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文可知,并根据倒数第二段中的“Spending time and energy gathering these wild plants gave me a deeper appreciation of the food that ended up on the dinner table.(花费时间和精力采摘这些野生植物,让我更加珍惜端上餐桌的食物。)”以及最后一段中的“Once I saw them from her angle that afternoon, I realized they were closer to me than I had ever imagined.(那天下午,一旦我站在她的角度看待他们,我便意识到,他们比我想象中离我更近。)” D The science of linguistics (语言学) may help advance our understanding of the human mind and behavior. B 13. C 14. A 15.
