My grandmother grew up in a world different from me. She experienced many things in her long life.
Though she never told stories, her stories were in the way she ate — she savored (品味) her food, cherished (珍惜) it. Often she would be the first to sit at the dinner table, and the last to leave. Food had been really scarce (缺乏) when she grew up.
Her stories were in the way she handed me lucky money. From a young age, my grandmother was brought up to understand the importance of hard work and the necessary of saving. Every Chinese New Year, I would be handed, or sent, a small red envelope that contained money, but never more than twenty dollars. When I was young , I didn’t understand why my grandmother gave me such a small amount of money. As I grew older, I realized that she wasn’t teaching me about money, but about tradition and hard work and family. The money was insignificant. I would probably spend it on any toy that I would lose soon after; it was the meaning behind her gift that mattered. It was her saying, “ I love you; I am your family and I want you to work hard as your family has before you.”
My grandmother’s stories were lessons. But they were never told in words. From the time that I was very young, up until she could barely remember my name, I remember her calling me “good girl”. Those two little words, in the course of my growing up, were a constant reminder that I was still so young, with still so far to go.
Now my grandmother is gone, but I see her every day. I see her in the women around me and in the mirror. She lives with me, inside me, and in the legacies(遗产)that I will create. And I know she would be proud.
4. The Author’s grandmother spent so much time eating at the table because ________.
A. she had no teeth B. she had nothing to do
C. she was preparing to clear the table D. she really wanted to enjoy the food
5. What did the author learn from the way her grandmother gave her lucky money?
A. Her grandmother didn’t have much money.
B. Her grandmother preferred boys to girls.
C. It was a shame to accept others’ money.
D. It was important for her to work hard.
6. What did the author realize hearing her grandmother call her “good girl” ?
A. She was really a good girl.
B. She needed to continually improve herself.
C. She should be proud of her manners and behaviors.
D. She was always a good girl in her grandmother’s eyes.
7. What can we know about the author’s grandmother after reading the passage?
A. She loved telling stories.
B. She had never worked in her life.
C. She set a great example for the author.
D. She was a mean woman with old-fashioned values.
C
We already know how watching other people’s lives on social media can negatively affect our self-esteem (自尊) and satisfaction with our own lives. Apparently, using apps to track your own calories or fitness activities can have a similar effect. New research from scientists at University College London (UCL) suggests that fitness apps can actually become major demotivators.
The researchers analyzed nearly 60,000 posts on the X platform. This data is particularly valuable because unlike traditional surveys, people tend to share honest, unfiltered (直白真实的) opinions online. The posts included feedback on popular apps, such as MyFitnessPal. Around 13,000 posts contained negative keywords the researchers tracked — and over half mentioned the calorie-counting app MyFitnessPal.
At first glance, MyFitnessPal seems to offer everything you need to stay on top of your fitness and diet. It allows users to track calorie intake, monitor proteins, and set personalized goals. You can simply import recipes or scan bar codes from food packages — the app will do the rest offering you guidance on what and when to eat. It sounds like working with a personal dietitian.
However, many people are not necessarily that gratified by it. Senior author Dr. Paulina Bondaronek explained, “In these posts, we found a lot of blame and shame, with people feeling they were not doing as well as they should be. These emotional effects may end up harming people’s motivation and health.”
MyFitnessPal is also pretty easy to “fool”, since it’s up to users whether to log or skip a meal. This creates a false sense that if something isn’t recorded in the app, it “didn’t happen”. Many admitted cheating (e.g., not recording a post-dinner cup of ice cream) to feel better, but this only led to more guilt. In some cases, people quit the app and their healthy habits altogether.
It’s important to note the study only analyzed negative posts, so there’s no scientifically proven data on fitness apps’ benefits. However, their drawbacks are hard to ignore. This is a clear wake-up call for developers to consider their products’ unintended consequences.
8. What do we know about MyFitnessPal?
A. It tracks health through exercise data.
B. It provides personalized dietitian services.
C. It automatically records every meal intake.
D. It may cause the discontinuation of healthy practices.
9. What do the underlined words “gratified by” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Puzzled about. B. Satisfied with.
C. Astonished at. D. Concerned about.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards fitness apps?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Convinced. D. Indifferent.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Fitness Apps: Unexpected Harms
B. Fitness Apps: A Double-edged Sword
C. Social Media: A Threat to Self-esteem and Health
D. MyFitnessPal: A Convenient Tool for Diet Control
D
Scientists can now conduct space research on Earth as China’s “ground space station” has been put into trial operation, reported Xin hua. The facility is called Space Environment Simulation and Research Infrastructure (SESRI).
SESRI simulates (模拟) conditions in space and is designed for studying basic space science. This will help scientists do experiments that they normally do in space. SESRI is jointly developed by the Harbin Institute of Technology and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
“Space is very different from the environment on Earth and can have different effects on spacecraft. What we do here is to explore how the effects take place and why,” Li Liyi, executive deputy director of SESRI, told Guangming Daily.
At the facility, there is a device that simulates the space environment from 100 kilometers away from Earth to the sun. In this area, more than 99 percent of visible matter is in a plasma (等离子体) state in which gas is in a highly charged and energetic state of matter. By re-creating the environment, the device can test how plasma affects spacecraft.
Also, one of the biggest problems manned space travel faces is when spacecraft enter Earth’s atmosphere, they are surrounded by plasma, leading to communication blackouts (黑障). The test center can also help solve this issue as researchers now have more opportunities to do tests.
The researchers faced many challenges when building the simulation system, as connecting various parts of the device can be very complicated. “We held more than 700 meetings over a connection problem alone.” Jin Chenggang at the facility told Heilongjiang News.
SESRI also has simulation systems for the moon and Mars, which can re-create the vacuum, extreme temperatures, and space radiation that astronauts would encounter on these space bodies. The systems will help astronauts prepare for their missions to these places in the future, reported Guangming Daily. In the future, the platform will also play an important role in areas including brain science, life and health research, and the development of high-end instruments.
12. What is the main benefit of simulating space environment?
A. Supporting space research on Earth. B. Reducing the cost of space missions.
C. Studying the effects of space on humans. D. Improving our understanding of black holes.
13. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The challenge of space exploration. B. The risk of experiments at the SESRI.
C. The benefit of space exploration. D. The function of the device at the SESRI.
14. Why does the author quote Jin Chenggang’s words?
A. To share a personal story about the building process.
B. To show the difficulties of building the simulation system.
C. To highlight the importance of preparations for the research.
D. To emphasize the challenges of working with other research teams.
15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Space simulation may be costly.
B. Space simulation raises social concerns.
C. International cooperation is crucial for space simulation.
D. Space simulation has great potential for future exploration.

Reading books can be a great way to pick up new vocabulary and develop your understanding of a language while enjoying your time. ____16____ But are you feeling confused by what to read? Here are some useful tips for you.
For beginners, I would recommend starting with something short and simple. Avoid the classics, for they often use very old English words and the themes are sometimes hard to understand. Children’s books can be a great place to start with. ____17____ His books are written in perfect rhyme (押韵) and they are all very funny. Starting with something like this means you are more likely to finish the book and want to read more.
____18____ This book isn’t too difficult and if you’ve seen the film, it may be easier to follow. If you like reading about historical events, Anne Holm’s I am David is a good read.
If you’re not quite ready to read a full book, why not try Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes?____19____ Or, try a very short book like one from Roger Hargreaves’s Mr Menand Little Miss series. Although they are intended for young children, they are a good way to pick up some more basic vocabulary.
My last piece of advice is to read something that interests you. Look at the short summary of the book on the back cover and see if it looks like something that you will enjoy. Think about the type that is in your own language and find that type in English. ____20____
A. For example, Dr Seuss’s books are sure to make you laugh.
B. All in all, the key to success is choosing the right book for you.
C. It means reading books can bring you knowledge as well as fun.
D. How much you can understand a book depends on your vocabulary.
E. You’re more likely to enjoy reading rather than see it as a headache.
F. For more advanced learners, you could try Wonder by R. J. Palacio.
G. It contains lots of short stories, based on fairy tales, all written in rhyme.

McCall,64, spent the night in a hotel in the tiny town of Cleveland, Tennessee. The retired electrician was driving from Florida to Michigan to visit a sick relative. Her budget was tight, and her head was full of questions. In the previous two years, McCall had lost her husband to cancer, and their 21-year-old grandson to violence. And a workplace accident had left McCall partially disabled and unable to work.
“I’m still looking for a place in the world,” says McCall. “I was married for almost 43years. I’m not sure where I’m supposed to be.” But even as everything changed around her, the future held one certainty: She’d have her two cats, Tucker and a 20-pound cat that she calls Fat Cat. The companionship and the routine of having to care for the animals were a lifeline when all else was turned upside down. “Honestly, after all the deaths, I was ready to give up,” says McCall. “If it hadn’t been for those two cats, I don’t think I would’ve made it.”
McCall planned to spend the night in Cleveland and drive on. But Tucker had other ideas. When McCall returned from breakfast the next morning, ready to pack up and hit the road again, the big black and white cat was gone from her hotel room. Panicked, she searched along the busy road for hours, hoping Tucker hadn’t been hit by a car. But he was nowhere to be found. As night fell, McCall realized she had to go. She could not afford to stay another night. Heartbroken, she got in her car and got back on the road.
“I’ d just been through all this tragedy. And now I’d lost Tucker,” she recalled. “We drove off with Fat Cat, crying all the way. Where’s my dear Tucker? I thought he was gone forever.”
The next day, Lillard, 27, went to wash the back windows of her shop, just down the road from the hotel where McCall had stayed.

D 5. D 6. B 7. C
由第二段“she savored (品味) her food, cherished (珍惜)it. Often she would be the first to sit at the dinner table, and the last to leave.”
由第三段“As I grew older, I realized that she wasn’t teaching me about money, but about tradition and hard work and family. It was her saying, “I love you; I am your family and I want you to work hard as your family has before you.”可知,随着年龄的增长,作者意识到祖母教给自己的不只是关于钱,而是关于传统、努力工作和对家庭的责任。祖母说:“我爱你;我是你的家人,我希望你像你们的家人一样努力工作。所以作者从她祖母给她压岁钱的方式中学到了自己要努力工作,这是很重要的。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。由倒数第二段“Those two little words, in the course of my growing up, were a constant reminder that I was still so young, with still so far to go.”
由最后一段“Now my grandmother is gone, but I see her every day. I see her in the women around me and in the mirror. She lives with me, inside me, and in the legacies (遗产) that I will create.”

D 9. B 10. B 11. A
根据第五段最后一句“In some cases, people quit the app and their healthy habits altogether. (有时,人们会放弃这个应用,甚至连健康习惯也一起放弃。)”可知,因为弃用这个应用可能会导致健康习惯的中断。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段前两句“However, many people are not necessarily that gratified by it. Senior author Dr. Paulina Bondaronek explained, “In these posts, we found a lot of blame and shame, with people feeling they were not doing as well as they should be.
但文章最后一段第一句“It’s important to note the study only analyzed negative posts, so there’s no scientifically proven data on fitness apps’ benefits.
故选A项。

Suddenly, Lillard noticed some noises coming from the dustbin. Curious, she approached it and peered inside. To her surprise, there was a big black and white cat, looking scared and weak. It was Tucker! He had apparently been trapped in the dustbin all night. Lillard felt a pang of pity for the poor creature. She carefully reached in and gently lifted Tucker out. The cat, though a bit shaken, seemed to recognize that he was being rescued. Lillard decided she had to find its owner. She checked Tucker’s collar and found a tag with a phone number on it. Without hesitation, she called the number.
On hearing Tucker’s voice on the phone, McCall couldn’t contain her excitement. Her heart leaped with joy. “Is that really you, Tucker?” she cried out, tears streaming down her face. She had been in such despair after losing him, thinking she’d never see her beloved cat again. Lillard explained how she had found Tucker and assured McCall that he was safe. McCall was over the moon. She thanked Lillard over and over again, her voice filled with gratitude. “You don’t know what this means to me,” she said. “Tucker is like family to me. I can’t thank you enough.” She quickly made arrangements to turn back and pick up Tucker. When she finally held Tucker in her arms again, it was as if a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
