Powerisers
The ability to jump two meters in the air may not be
something you have thought too much about. And most people
have never considered running at 30 kilometers an hour. But
just stop for a moment and think about how our new product
could change your life.
Your daily journey to your place of work is probably a mad dash (for the bus.
There is no point in taking your car because there are traffic jams, and anyway the car
parks are probably very expensive or,worse still, full. Here is where Powerisers can
help.It takes just a couple of minutes to put them on and then you are away, going past
others or even jumping over the object which blocks your way.
That is the practical use for our product, but then there is sport and exercise.
Powerisers are set to be the next extreme sport and the keep-fit tools. You can imagine
the 100 meters, the high jump or basketball performed by athletes wearing Powerisers.
And what better way to build your muscles and keep fit?
Our product is very simple. It is powered by a superlight spring, which uses the
gravitational (pull from your body weight and pushes you with superhuman
strength. There have been no records of serious injury related to the use of Powerisers,
but extreme caution is recommended. We strongly advise the wearing of protective
clothing,including at least a helmet(头盔).
Powerisers make you feel as if you were walking on the moon. Now we make two
different models:Basic and Professional. The Basic model is designed for the
occasional users and costs around $500.The Professional model, which is designed for
competitive use,has a strongly-made structure and different springs, though that comes
at the increased price of $800.Our Powerisers are guaranteed for 2 years and will be
replaced without question if they fail during that period. That is how confident we are.

Two-Man Ironman
On Sept.17,2022,Jeff and his son,Johnny, set out to begin the first of three legs-of
the Ironman competition, where competitors must complete a 140 miles of swimming,
bicycling and running in under 17 hours. Not that long ago,Johnny could barely walk a
few steps because he was born with cerebral palsy ()But his dream of being a
runner never stopped.
From the day Johnny was born,Jeff refused to let his son's disability hold him
back.Determined to show Johnny that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete,
Jeff helped him engage in running. They began waking up at 4 a.m.so Jeff could run
while pushing his son in a special wheelchair called a racing chair.Every morning, they
drove themselves to run increasingly longer distances.Soon, they were entering 5K
races,then on to Ironman competition.Jeff would act as Johnny's arms and legs;
carrying the weight of his son throughout the race.
The race began with a 2.4-mile swim.Settling Johnny into a kayak,Jeff eased
himself into the water.Swimming while dragging another person was very tough. But
worst of all,Jeff had to struggle with jellyfish."I occupied my mind by counting the
number of times I got stung (),he says.
After the two men completed the tough bike section in roughly nine hours, they set
their sights on the final leg of the race-a 26.2-mile marathon. They'd been competing
for 10.5 hours, leaving another 6.5 hours to make their time. But at Mile 19,Johnny saw
the clock ticking down and worried they wouldn't make the cutoff.Despite the tiredness,
Jeff was convinced they were going all right and then picked up the pace.
With minutes left and 200 feet to the finish line,Jeff stopped to help Johnny out of
his racing chair and handed him his rolling walker. After years of painstaking work,
Johnny was determined to finish his races on his own. After 16 hours,55 minutes and
35seconds,the father and son crossed the finish line together.

C
There is a connection I feel with horses that is unlike anything I have ever
experienced. They can be frightening because of their size, speed and unpredictability,
but they also force you to be calm.I think that was the smartest thing my first riding
teacher taught me when I was seven:if you're calm, they will be calm.
I have never owned a horse,but for a year I got to take care of a pony,Baronet,that
I had found abandoned when I was 11.I had moved to England for the second time in
my short life. This period was filled with anxiety and instability and there were a lot of
unaccompanied moments.
I saw him one day while I was out walking in the woods. He was staring at me
from where he stood, wild and dirty.I just went to him and he came to me.I found the
farmer who owned him,who said he was a lost cause:"Too difficult,"he said.When I
asked if I could care for him,he didn't hesitate:"Sure, take him."
He wasn't trained. He was stubborn and picky and angry. He had been labelled
"difficult"just as I was labelled "Sunshine Girl".It's not a good thing to be labelled.
"Sunshine Girl"made me feel like I couldn't complain.I didn't want to.make anyone
unhappy.I always felt I had to go with the flow.
Baronet saved me that year.He gave my life a.sense of purpose and meaning.I
would wake up early and walk two miles to the barn to feed him and try to train him,
and the moment I came home from school I would run back to the barn to spend time
with him.
Looking back,I see Baronet as a wonder. In some magical way I found Baronet when I
needed him most and,as sad as I was to leave him at the end of the year, when we
moved yet again,I saw the progress we had made together.Seeing that I could make a
difference was a huge awakening for me as a child.
36.How did the writer probably feel when moving to England?
A.Worried.
B.Surprised.
C.Puzzled.
D.Excited.
37.What did the farmer probably mean by saying"he was a lost cause"?
A.Baronet was always alone.
B.Baronet could easily get lost
C.Baronet could hardly survive.
D.Baronet was hard to deal with.
38.How did Baronet influence the writer?
A.It taught her not to complain.
B.It inspired her to be easygoing.
C.It helped her to get over loneliness.
D.It encouraged her to accept her label.
D
Pacing and Pausing
Sara tried to befriend her old friend Steve's new wife, but Betty never seemed to
have anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didn't hold up her end of the conversation,
高二英语期中考试
第5页共9页
Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to
do with expectations about pacing and pausing.
Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, there's no problem.
But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before I'm finished or fail to take
your turn when I'm finished. That's what was happening with Betty and Sara.
It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between
turns,is British,and Sara,who expected relatively shorter pauses,is American.Betty
often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself
doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard
time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel.
The general phenomenon, then,is that the small conversation techniques, like
pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but
about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often the basis for
dangerous stereotyping(思维定势).And these social phenomena can have very
personal consequences. For example,a woman from the southwestern part of the US
went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel
Department got together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to break in
-and never found it.Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident,
in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end
of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up.
That's why slight differences in conversational style -tiny little things like
microseconds of pause-can have a great effect on one's life. The result in this cause
was a judgment of psychological problems-even in the mind of the woman herself,
who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training.
39.What did Sara think of Betty when talking with her?
A.Betty was talkative.
B.Betty was an interrupter.
C.Betty did not take her turn.
D.Betty paid no attention to Sara.
40.According to the passage, who are likely to expect the shortest pauses between
turns?
A.Americans.
B.Israelis.C.The British.D.The Finns.
41.We can learn from the passage that
A.communication breakdown results from short pauses and fast pacing
B.women are unfavorably stereotyped in eastern cities of the US
C.one's inability to speak up is culturally determined sometimes
D.one should receive training to build up one's confidence
42.The underlined word "assertiveness"in the last paragraph probably means
A.being willing to speak one's mind
B.being able to increase one's power
C.being ready to make one's own judgment
D.being quick to express one's ideas confidently

六、书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40,41题各2分;第42题3分;第43题5分,共12
分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
In today's fast-paced,achievement-oriented society,productivity is often
associated with time management. We often think that to be productive,we need to
master time-management techniques. But have you ever noticed that when you're
emotionally worn out,you struggle to stay organized or motivated?Or when you're
overwhelmed, tasks like answering emails or doing laundry pile up?
Unresolved emotions, such as fears of disappointing others or missing out on
opportunities,often drive people to over-commit.Even with a well-organized calendar,
you may find yourself squeezing in extra tasks, only to feel overwhelmed and rushed,
which can lead to anxiety or even depression. The problem is not your
time-management skills,but emotional overload.
True productivity isn't about doing more in less time;it's about managing your
energy, emotions, and well-being over the long term.Research shows that employees
who practice emotional regulation experience 20-30%higher productivity than those
who rely only on time management.
The good news is that emotional management isn't about grand gestures-it
grows in small, intentional shifts.Start by pausing before agreeing to new commitments.
When someone asks you to take on an additional task, don't immediately agree.Ask for
some time to consider it and review your other obligations.Besides, separate your work
outcomes from your self-worth.By shifting from a perfectionist mindset to a
growth-oriented one,you will focus on learning rather than only on achieving perfect
outcomes.
To get out of a seemingly cruel cycle,it takes patience and sensibility within
yourself.Change is hard,but every step,no matter how small,is a step toward
reclaiming your well-being.
