Miss Martha owned a small bakery (面包店). She was forty, a kind woman with a big imagination. She often wondered about the customers in her shop.
One customer made her very curious. He was a middle-aged man with glasses, who always wore old clothes, but clean. He came twice a week, and each time, he only bought two loaves (条) of hard bread. He never looked at her delicious pies or fresh cakes.
Miss Martha decided he must be a poor, hungry artist. She imagined him living in a very small, cheap room, thinking only about his painting so much that he forgot to eat. The idea touched her kind heart. She began to wish she could help him.
The next time he came to the shop, she acted quickly while his back was turned. She took two hard loaves, made a small hole in each, and put a large piece of fresh butter inside. Then she wrapped them up as usual.
Her heart beat fast as she handed him the bread. She spent the rest of the day dreaming that he would discover her kindness and thank her.
Suddenly, the quiet of the afternoon was broken. The shop door flew open, and the man stormed in. His face was dark with anger. He threw the bread down hard on the table.
“I am an architect (建筑师)!” he shouted. “For the past three months, I have been working on a building plan. I draw in pencil, and I use pieces of hard bread as erasers. It works better than a rubber eraser! But now… look.”
He held up his drawing. A huge, dirty mark from the butter ran across the clean, straight lines.
“You filled my bread with butter!” he shouted. “My work is damaged!”

Have you ever heard of “vertical farming” (垂直农业)? It is a way of growing food in tall buildings, not on flat farmland. Inside these buildings, plants grow under special LED lights, with water and nutrients delivered directly to their roots.
Why is vertical farming becoming popular? First, it saves land. As cities grow, farmland decreases. Vertical farms can be built in cities, close to where people live. Second, it saves water. Vertical farms use up to 95% less water than traditional farms because water is recycled. Third, it allows year-round farming. Weather doesn’t matter inside a vertical farm.
However, vertical farming has challenges. The biggest one is energy cost. The LED lights use a lot of electricity. Scientists are working on more efficient lights. Also, not all crops can grow well indoors. Rice and wheat still need large fields.
Despite these challenges, many countries are building vertical farms. Singapore, a small country with little farmland, has some successful vertical farms. “This is the future of farming,” says agricultural scientist Dr. Li. “We need to feed 9 billion people by 2050. Vertical farming can help.”
33. According to the passage, how much water can vertical farming save?
A. 95% B. 85% C. 75% D. 50%
34. What is the biggest challenge of vertical farming?
A. It takes too much land. B. It uses a lot of energy.
C. It cannot grow vegetables. D. It pollutes the water.
35. Why is vertical farming good for Singapore?
A. Because Singapore has no sunlight.
B. Because Singapore has too much farmland.
C. Because Singapore doesn’t like traditional farming.
D. Because Singapore is a small country with little farmland.
36. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. LED lights are bad for growing plants.
B. Singapore has the most farmland in the world.
C. Traditional farming is better than vertical farming.
D. Vertical farming is a new way to grow food in cities.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a common tool in our daily lives. From helping us draw and write to finding answers in seconds, AI is getting smarter every day. With its rapid development, some people worry that AI might one day take over human jobs and even replace (替代) humans in many areas. However, I believe AI will never truly replace humans. Here are some reasons to support this view.
First of all, AI doesn’t have feelings. It can generate a beautiful painting in just a few seconds, but it does so without any feeling. It does not experience joy, sadness, or love while creating. Human art, on the other hand, is full of emotion. Only humans can truly express what is in their hearts, and only humans can care for others in a deep and meaningful way.
Secondlv, humans are naturally creative. We can think in new ways and come up with original (独创的) ideas. AI, by contrast, can only work with the data (数据) it has been given. It learns from what we teach it and cannot produce anything truly new or original. Human imagination allows us to dream, explore, and innovate in ways that machines simply cannot.
Third, humans have the ability to tell right from wrong. We make decisions based on values, morals and empathy (价值观、道德和同理心). AI may follow data and logic, but it does not truly understand the importance of its actions. It cannot feel guilty, sympathy, or a sense of justice.
In conclusion, AI is a powerful and helpful tool, but it is not a replacement for human beings. It can help us, make us more efficient, and inspire new ideas, but it cannot feel, imagine, or judge like we do. To succeed in the future, we must continue to develop our hearts and minds — qualities that make us unique (独特的) human.
37. What can AI do according to the passage?
A. It can feel happy or sad. B. It can think like a human.
C. It can tell right from wrong. D. It can help us draw and write.
38. How many reasons did the writer give to support his or her view?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
39. Which of the following would the writer most likely agree with?
A. Creativity is not important in the age of Al.
B. AI can teach humans how to be more creative.
C. Humans should keep learning and growing their own abilities.
D. To succeed in the future, we should let AI do everything for us.
40. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain how powerful AI is. B. To encourage the use of AI.
C. To compare human with AI. D. To tell AI can’t replace human.

In Tongren city, Guizhou Province, there is a special embroidery called leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣). This type of embroidery began in the Song Dynasty. It was used for communication among different ethnic groups in southwestern China.
Making leaf-vein embroidery is not easy. It takes a lot of steps, including choosing the right leaves, drying them, creating the designs and embroidering. Yang Li, a master of this craft, mentioned that in the last ten years, only about 20 people could complete the whole process by themselves. Because of the long, hard work, passing on the traditional craft faces challenges. “I have introduced this art to universities, communities and villages, but very few people have continued to do it,” Yang said. “I feel a duty. In my lifetime, I must pass on leaf-vein embroidery.” she said.
In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou embroidery intangible cultural heritage base (黔绣非物质文化遗产基地) and started to share traditional skills of leaf-vein embroidery by making short videos online. “Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure. I hope more young people will return to their hometowns to continue its legacy.” Yang said.
