Beavers are the largest rodents (啮齿目动物) in Britain. But these animals do much more than just being big —— they are excellent builders. Beavers knock down trees by chewing through the bottom. They use the wood to build dams (大坝) and homes. Their dams create ponds and wetlands. These become new homes for many other plants and animals. Beavers also dig small canals (渠道) away from the river. This slows down the water and helps it go into the ground. As a result, the river is less likely to flood. Scientists have also found that beavers help fight climate change. Over the last 200 years, humans have put too much carbon dioxide(CO₂) into the air. This gas keeps heat and warms the planet. Beavers store carbon naturally in the mud and the dead wood they use for their dams. A study in Switzerland looked at a river where beavers had lived for over ten years. Scientists studied the water, plants, riverbed, and air. They built a model to find out how much carbon the beavers had stored. The answer: over 1,000 tons of carbon. That is up to ten times more than rivers without beavers. Beavers almost disappeared from Europe by the early 1900s. They were gone from Britain for many years. In 2009, people started bringing them back. The study shows that if beavers were put back into all suitable places in Switzerland, they could offset almost 2% of its yearly carbon emissions(碳排放). This helped the air cleaner. So next time you see a river with fallen trees and a small dam, remember: those busy beavers are not just building homes. They are helping fight climate change, one tree at a time. 8. What does the passage mainly explain? A. A historical fact. B. A scientific finding. C. A natural behavior. D. An environmental benefit. 9. Which of the beaver’s behaviors can best help fight climate change? A. B. C. D. 10. What does the underlined word“offset” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Give up. B. Put out. C. Take up. D. Balance out. 11. What does the writer think of beavers? A. Cute. B. Strong. C. Helpful. D. Creative. B 9. A 10. D 11. 【8题详解】 第一段明确指出“New research has found that beavers play a powerful role in fighting climate change”,说明文章主要介绍一项科学研究发现。 【9题详解】 根据第三段“Beavers store carbon naturally in the mud and the dead wood they use for their dams”,可知海狸在泥浆和木头中储存二氧化碳,帮助对抗气候变化。 【10题详解】 由“This helped the air cleaner”可知,海狸能帮助清洁空气,减少二氧化碳年度排放量,“offset”意为抵消或减少,D项Balance out符合语境,意为”抵消“。 【11题详解】 最后一段写道“They are helping fight climate change, one tree at a time”,说明作者认为海狸是有帮助的动物。 D A new study shows that humans may not be fit for life in busy cities. Scientists say the study tells us how important nature is for people’s health and happiness. Our bodies are still used to the life of our early ancestors (祖先). In ancient times, early humans lived in natural settings, like forests, coasts, and mountains. To make a living, they had to take physical activities every day, such as hunting animals and collecting plants for food. They also walked a long way to find resources. The bodies and brains of early humans developed well for this kind of life. And this helped them stay safe from danger. For example, when they met a dangerous animal like a lion, their brains would send a warning quickly. Then their bodies could run fast to get away. The situation changed greatly in the late 1700s. The Industrial Revolution (革命) started, and machines began to do much work that people did before. Later, cars, trains and factories appeared. Many natural areas were destroyed (毁坏 ) to build houses and shops.Green space became less and less. The study says that human society developed much faster than our bodies. This made a mismatch between us and the modern environment. In the 21st century, we sit for long hours every day. Our stress usually comes from work, study or heavy traffic, not from wild animals. But our bodies and brains still send warnings all the time, just“like facing lions again and again”, said Daniel Longman, one of the study’s writers. This is bad for our immune (免疫) system and general health. To solve the problem, the scientists advise cities to have more green space. They also say people should spend more time in nature. This can help us keep healthy and strong in modern life. 12. What did early humans do to make a living in ancient times? A. They built houses and villages to live in. B. They invented and used tools to work. C. They hunted animals and gathered plants. D. They ran fast to send warnings to others. 13. When did the situation of human life change greatly according to the passage? A. In ancient times. B. In the late 1700s. C. In modern times. D. In the 21st century. 14. Why was there a mismatch between humans and the environment in modern times? A. Because there were fewer wild animals in the forests. B. Because society developed faster than human bodies. C. Because people were under pressure from their families. D. Because people did a lot of physical activities every day. 15. What’s the best title for the passage? A. Are There Ways to Reduce Stress? B. What Is the Industrial Revolution? C. Why Aren’t Humans Fit for City Life? D. How Can We Keep Healthy and Strong? C 13. B 14. B 15. 【12题详解】 第二段指出谋生方式:“To make a living, they had to take physical activities every day, such as hunting animals and collecting plants for food.”,说明远古人类通过狩猎动物和采集植物来谋生。 【13题详解】 第三段指出发生变化时间:“The situation changed greatly in the late 1700s.”,说明这一变化发生在18世纪末期。 【14题详解】 第四段指出不匹配的原因:“human society developed much faster than our bodies. This made a mismatch between us and the modern environment.”,说明社会发展的速度远快于人类身体进化的速度,导致了不匹配。 [After the discussion about My hero—Dr Norman Bethune, students are ready to share their opinions in class.] Teacher: So now who wants to try first? C New research has found that beavers play a powerful role in fighting climate change. A. Cute. B. Strong. C. Helpful. D. Creative. D A new study shows that humans may not be fit for life in busy cities. [After the discussion about My hero—Dr Norman Bethune, students are ready to share their opinions in class.] Teacher: So now who wants to try first?
