"Dancing until you drop"is a well-known
saying, but would you really be able to dance
until you dropped dead?In 1374,in some Euro-
pean towns, people did exactly that. They were
struck by a dancing plague(瘟疫)that forced
them to dance.
This phenomenon(现象)was reported to
have happened throughout parts of Western Eu-
rope, affecting people from the 14th to the 17th
century.Hardly stopping to eat or even sleep,
they would dance, sometimes for days on end,
making this one of the strangest sicknesses in
Western history.
Over the next century, there were only a
few outbreaks.However,in the summer of
1518,it reappeared in the city of Strasbourg,
France. It all began with a woman called Mrs.
Troffea, who started to dance crazily in the
street.
She was soon joined by 34 people within a
week;by the end of the month, the crowd had
18
increased to 400,most of whom were women.A-
gain, people were dancing until they could no
longer continue, with some finally dying from
heart attacks or exhaustion. One report shows
that the plague was killing around 15 people per
day.
As the plague worsened,concerned nobles
(贵族)turned to the advice of local doctors,
who said that the plague was a "natural dis-
ease”caused by“hot blood”.So the nobles
encouraged more dancing.
The reason behind their actions was that
they believed the dancers could only recover
(康复)if they danced continuously night and
day.The nobles even paid for musicians to keep
the moving.
Then,as before,it disappeared almost as
suddenly as it had come.
While these events may sound highly unbe-
lievable, there is clear written evidence that it
did happen.
Now,historians and scientists are still try-
ing to find out the true cause of this phenome-

Hello,I'm Jan from Mrs.Lake's class.My
class wants to work together to help the public.
We think we have found a great way to do this
Last month,we did a class project on the high-
ways near our town.We learned about the A-
dopt-a-Highway Programme.This programme
brings people together to pick up litter along the
roads. We think it is a great idea for all
students in our school to join the programme and
adopt a highway.
Adopting a highway is not like adopting a
pet.When a highway is adopted,only part of
the highway is cared for by a group of people.
The group agrees to work every week to keep its
part of the highway clean. Each group gets its
UNT3检测卷O
own sign that has the name of the group printed
on it.The sign is put up at the side of the road.
This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that
area of the road.
The Adopt-a-Highway Programme is a
great way for people to help their environment
look nicer. Also, the government does not have
to send out many road workers. This saves mon-
ey.Finally, people may work harder to keep
roads clean if they see people, especially teenag-
ers like us,cleaning them up.
We need helpers to care for our adopted
highway. If you want to feel great and keep our
roads clean, please come with your parents to
the meeting next week.We will meet in Mrs
Lake's room at 6:00 p.m.on Wednesday.At the
meeting,we will talk about which roads are the
dirtiest as a result of people's unkind acts. Then
we'll try to pick an area to adopt and clean up.
I am looking forward to seeing you at the
meeting.Remember to keep our roads clean!

A.Giving names to the highways

A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees
with the total high rainfall spreading quite e-
qually through the year and the temperature
rarely falling below 16C.Rainforests have a
great effect on the world environment because
they can take in heat from the sun and adjust
the climate.Without the forest cover, these are-
as would reflect more heat into the atmosphere,
warming the rest of the world.Losing the rain-
forests may also influence wind and rainfall pat-
tems,potentially(潜在地)causing certain nat-
ural disasters all over the world.
In the past hundred years, humans have
begun destroying rainforests in search of three
major resources:land for crops, wood for paper
20
and other products, land for raising farm ani-
mals. This action affects the environment as a
whole. For example,a lot of carbon dioxide in
the air comes from burning the rainforests.Peo-
ple obviously have a need for the resources we
gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much
more than we will benefit.
There are two main reasons for this.First-
ly,when people cut down trees, generally they
can only use the land for a year or two.Second-
ly,cutting large sections of rainforests may pro-
vide a good supply of wood right now,but in the
long run it actually reduces the world's wood
supply.Rainforests are often called the world's
drugstore.More than 25%of the medicines we
use today come from plants in rainforests.How-
ever, fewer than 1%of rainforest plants have
been examined for their medical value. It is ex-
tremely likely that our best chance to cure dis-
eases lies somewhere in the world's shrinking
rainforests.
(
)32.Rainforests can help to adjust the
climate because they
A.reflect more heat into the at-
mosphere
B.bring about high rainfall through-
out the world
C.rarely cause the temperature to
drop lower than16℃
D.absorb the heat from the sun,
reducing the effect of heat
from the sun on the earth
)33.What does the underlined word“this”
in the third paragraph refer to?
A.We will lose much more than
we can gain.
B.Humans have begun destroying
rainforests.
C.People have a strong desire for
resources.
D.Much carbon dioxide comes
from burning rainforests.
(
)34.It can be inferred from the text that
A.we can get enough resources
without rainforests
B.there is great medicine potential
in rainforests
C.we will grow fewer kinds of
crops in the gained land
D.the level of annual rainfall af-
fects wind patterns
()35.What might be the best title for the
text?
A.How to Save Rainforests?
B.How to Protect Nature?
C.Rainforests and the Environment
D.Rainforests and Medical Devel-
opment

When you get back
home, you'll have lots of stories to tell your
friends and family.Even if something isn't very
fun,it will be funny to look back and laugh at
those awkward or harsh moments. For example,
I was travelling with a group of friends in Pisa

having to walk back.
When you travel, you expose yourself to
different people.38.
It's a great

person because you can share and exchange
your own ideas and opinions on a range of top-

of his ideas were shaped by his Iranian back-

what it took to play on a team."I'm no football

I received my congratulation letter. There was
rarely a game where Dad wasn't on the side-

Four years of hard preseason football
camps came down to my last game.I urged my
dad to bring our video camera.
I waved at my parents before the opening
