作文
Dear judges and fellow students,
Good morning! I am Li Jin from Senior 2. Today, I am honored to speak on the topic "Self-management: The Key to Growth."
To me, self-management is the conscious ability to regulate our time, emotions, and behaviors to achieve personal goals. It serves as an internal compass, guiding us through distractions and challenges toward continuous improvement.
I would like to share my experience with time management and emotional regulation, two aspects that have transformed my life. In Senior 1, I struggled with procrastination and anxiety. I often delayed assignments until the last minute, which led to poor sleep and declining grades. My breaking point came when I failed a midterm exam. Determined to change, I adopted the "Pomodoro Technique" — studying in focused 25-minute intervals with short breaks. I also started journaling to process my emotions instead of suppressing them. Initially, sticking to this schedule made me feel restrictive. However, within a month, I noticed remarkable changes: I completed tasks ahead of deadlines, my anxiety decreased a lot, and my grade improved significantly . This experience taught me that self-management isn't about deprivation/loss but about creating structures that enable freedom and growth.
Dear friends, we live in an era of endless distractions. Without self-management, our potential remains untapped. I urge you to start small — set one clear goal, create a simple plan, and commit to it for 21 days. Remember, growth doesn't happen by accident—it is the result of intentional self-management.
Let's embrace this key and unlock our full potential!
Thank you!

A
When you're choosing a college, a lot of factors probably may be considered: the school's
reputation, the classes offered, and the professors in your major, to name a few. However,
considering the increasing competitiveness of universities to attract more and more applicants,
many schools now offer extra benefits to be enjoyed by all of their students. Here are some of
the coolest:
The University of Missouri
When you think of a campus gym, you probably picture a room equipped with old weights
and out-of-date machines. However, at the University of Missouri, you can enjoy one of the
best campus fitness centers in the country. It features an "indoor beach" complete with a
waterfall and a lazy river, as well as a full-service spa. Even if you don't normally enjoy
working out, Missouri's fitness center will give you a reason to go to the gym.
High Point University
If you see yourself quickly tired of dining hall food-something that happens to almost
all of us — High Point University in North Carolina has a great option for you: a private
steakhouse for students. It's a first-class restaurant, and, best of all, you don't have to pay for
the meal out of your own pocket. You can use your dining dollars instead.
Seton Hall University
If you're stressing out about the extra cost of technology when you start college, Seton
Hall University has great news for you; all freshmen are given free laptops through the
university's Mobile Computing Program. As a freshman, you'll receive a laptop already set up
with all of the software that you'll need as a student. Then, after two years, you'll receive a new
and updated laptop designed to carry you through until after you graduate.
New York University
If you're a fan of museums, NYU(New York University) is the perfect university for you;
not only is it located in the heart of a city featuring some of the best museums in the world, but
the university will even provide you with free admission to many of them. You can take
advantage of visiting free museums at any time you want-and you'll never be bored on the
weekends.

I was physically destroyed the first time I rode my bike home from Costco carrying a load
of groceries. The 11-mile round trip left me with dead legs and the suspicion that I had made a
mistake.
A month earlier, my 23-year-old minivan broke down for the last time. Rather than replace
it, I decided a new “car-free” reality would encourage a healthier lifestyle. My aching muscles
questioned the viability (可行性) of this plan.
Three years later, I now know that giving up my car was the first step toward solving a
lifelong struggle: maintaining consistent physical activity. What started as a necessity---I had
no car, so I must bike became a strategy: Errands (差事) are an opportunity for exercise.
I began seeking out new errands just for the exercise they would provide. Rain or shine, I
became an errand-running machine. For most of my adult life, I’d been trying, and failing, to
consistently exercise. Only now, as I hit my 60th birthday, did I feel I’d finally figured it out.
Michelle Fortier, a physical activity psychologist, mentioned that outside motivations, like
doctors warnings and weight insecurities, do not result in lasting behavior change. “That can
get people started, but it will not maintain their physical activity,” Dr. Fortier said.
My own behavior change, Dr. Fortier explained, was probably the result of combining two
intrinsically (内在地) generated motivations that had nothing to do with body-image fears or
outside pressures: I love to ride my bike, and I love the satisfaction of getting things done.
Recognizing that day-to-day tasks often involve movement is an opportunity to build
physical activity habits into our everyday lives. But you’d better pay attention to the pleasure
principle, begin with what you like, and then work yourself into shape.
41. How did the author find his first-time biking trip to and from Costco?
A. Very confusing. B. Extremely tiring.
C. Rather worrying. D. Deeply embarrassing.
42. What problem did the author face before giving up his car?
A. He lacked enough money to buy a new one.
B. He was too busy to ride a bike to a grocery shop.
C. He had difficulty in doing physical activity regularly.
D. He found it challenging to drive a car over a long distance.
43. In paragraph 5, the author mentions Michelle Fortier to show _________.
A. the benefits of running errands
B. the challenges in behavior change
C. the importance of regular exercise
D. the importance of intrinsic motivations
44. What played an important role in the author’s lasting behavior change?
A. A sense of satisfaction.
B. Warnings from doctors.
C. Tips from a psychologist.
D. A fear for his growing weight.
45. What would be the best title for the text?
A. How I Overcame Outside Pressures
B. How I Turned My Errands into Exercise
C. Why I Became a Fast-Running Machine
D. Why I Dreamed of a “Car-Free” Lifestyle
C
Social media can be a powerful communication tool for employees, helping them to
collaborate, share ideas and solve problems. Research has shown that 82% of employees think social media can improve work relationships and 60% believe it can support decision-making processes. These beliefs contribute to a majority of workers connecting with colleagues on social media, even during work hours.
Employers typically worry that social media is a productivity killer; more than half of U.S.
employers reportedly block access to social media at work. In my research with 277employees of a healthcare organization I found these concerns to be misguided. Social media doesn't reduce productivity nearly as much as it kills employee retention(保留).
In the first part of the study, I surveyed the employees about why and how they used
platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Respondents were then asked about their work behaviors, including whether they felt motivated in their jobs and showed initiative at work. I found employees who engage in online social interactions with co-workers through social media blogs tend to be more motivated and come up with innovative ideas. But when employees interact with individuals outside the organization, they are less motivated and show less initiative.
In the second part of the study, I found 76% of employees using social media for work took
an interest in other organizations they found on social media. When I examined how respondents express to new careers and employers, I found that they engaged in some key activities including researching new organizations and making new work connection.
These findings present a dilemma for managers: employees using social media at work are
more engaged and more productive, but they are also more likely to leave your company. Managers should implement solutions that neutralize the retention risk caused by social media.
They can create social media groups in which employees will be more likely to
collaborate and less likely to share withdrawal intentions or discussions about external job opportunities. Managers can also use social media to directly reduce turnover (跳槽)intentions, by recognizing employees' accomplishments and giving visibility to employees' success stories?
46. What does previous research about social media reveal?
A. Most employees think positively of it.
B. It improves employees' work efficiency.
C. It enables employees to form connections.
D. Employees spend much of their work time on it.
47. What did the author's own research find about social media?
A. It influences employees' work negatively.
B. It does much harm to employee loyalty.
C. It kills employees' motivation for work.
D. It affects employers' decision-making.
48. What did the author find in his study about the effect of online social interactions?
A. It differs from employee to employee.
B. It tends to vary with the platform used.
C. It has much to do with whom employees interact with.
D. It is hard to measure when employees interact with outsiders.
49. What problem was found with employees using social media for work?
A. They seldom expressed their inner thoughts.
B. Most of them explored new job opportunities.
C. They were reluctant to collaborate with others.
D. Many of them ended with lower productivity.
50. What does the author suggest managers do to neutralize the retention risk?
A. Give promotions to employees for their accomplishments.
B. Create opportunities for employees to share success stories.
C. Acknowledge employees’ achievements through social media
D. Encourage employees to increase their visibility on social media.
D
Lao Zi once said, "Care about what other people think and you will always be their
prisoner." People-pleasing, or seeking self-worth through others' approval, is unproductive and an exhausting way to go through life. Why do we allow what others think of us to have so much power over how we feel about ourselves? If it's true that you can't please all people all of the time, wouldn't it make sense to stop trying?
Unfortunately, sense often isn't driving our behavior. For social beings who desire love and
belonging, wanting to be liked, and caring about the effect we have on others, is healthy and allows us to make connections.
However, where we get into trouble is when our self-worth is dependent upon whether we
win someone's approval or not.
This need to be liked can be traced back to when we were children and were completely
dependent on others to take care of us: Small children are not just learning how to walk and communicate, they are also trying to learn how the world works. We learn about who we are and what is expected of us based on interactions with others so, to a four-year-old, if Mommy or Daddy doesn't like him or her, there is the danger that they will abandon them. We need to understand that when we desperately want someone to approve of us, it's being driven by that little kid part of us that is still terrified of abandonment.
As you become more capable of providing yourself with the approval you seek, your need
for external validation will start to vanish, leaving you stronger, more confident, and yes, happier in your life. Imagine how much time we lose each moment we restrain our authentic selves in an effort to be liked.
If we base our worth on the opinions of others, we cheat ourselves of the power to shape
our experiences and embrace life not only for others but also for ourselves, because ultimately, there is no difference. So embrace the cliché (老话) and love yourself as it's highly doubtful that you'll regret it
51. What can we conclude from Lao Zi’s quotation?
A. We should see through other people's attempt to make a prisoner of us.
B. We can never really please other people even if we try as hard as we can.
C. We can never be truly free if taking to heart others' opinion of us.
D. We should care about other people's view as much as they care about our own.
52.What will happen if we base our self-worth on other people's approval?
A. Our desire to be loved will be fulfilled.
B. Our life will be unfruitful and exhausting
C. Our identity as social beings will be affected.
D. Our sense of self will be sharpened and enhanced.
53. What may account for our need to be liked or approved of?
A. Our desperate longing for interactions with others.
B. Our understanding of the workings of the world.
C. Our knowledge about the pain of abandonment.
D. Our early childhood fear of being deserted.
54. What can we do when we become better able to provide ourselves with the desired approval?
A. Enjoy a happier life
B. Exercise self-restraint
C. Receive more external validation
D. Strengthen our power of imagination
55. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Embrace life for ourselves and for others.
B. See our experiences as wealth.
C. Base our worth on others’ opinions
D. Love ourselves as we are

“Where’s my list?” I asked, searching through papers on the breakfast table. My husband
John smiled, joking about my constant to-do lists. For me, lists were not just organization —
they were a way to calm my worries. Now, with our children grown, John and I were preparing
for a major change: selling our home after nearly 30 years and moving somewhere new.
I began imagining our future: a place near the water, easy for family visits, with good
transport links. But before any of that, we had to sell our house. Throughout my life, I had
always believed in finishing tasks before allowing myself to enjoy what came next. Yet again
and again, something interrupted — a sudden family crisis, a friend’s last-minute need, even a
worldwide pandemic that no one predicted — and my well-made plans would fall apart. Each
time, I felt like starting over from the beginning.
I reminded John how long it took to sell our first home, a place filled with early memories.
Our first son, Jay, was born while we were still waiting for a buyer. That small house witnessed
his first steps, his first words, and the news that I was pregnant with our second child, Mark. In
my eagerness to move forward back then, I almost missed the beauty of those everyday
moments.
Sitting at our kitchen table now, I looked around. This house, too, held a lifetime of joy:
the boys walking to school, friends gathering in the yard, grandparents living nearby, and
countless family meals, stories, and laughter. For three decades, these walls had contained so
much happiness. Why had I spent so much time planning for “someday” while overlooking the
precious “now”?
I gently pushed my lists aside. “The right buyer will come at the right time,” I said to
John. “We’ll end up exactly where we’re meant to be.” He looked at me, surprised. “What’s
changed?” he asked.
“My outlook has changed,” I replied. “I don’t want to be so focused on the future that I
fail to appreciate the present — whether our house sells in two weeks or two years.”
As it happened, our home sold much faster than I expected. Now, in our new place, my
to-do list remains long, and not everything goes according to plan. But I am learning, day by
day, to enjoy the journey itself.
