Three Inspiring Musicals
Musicals have long been an influential art form, combining attractive tunes, vivid performances and meaningful themes. They not only entertain people but also pass on valuable spirits. Here are three musicals that have touched a wide audience.
Hamilton
Hamilton, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the life story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers. Unlike traditional musicals, it mainly depends on hip-hop, rap and R&B to develop the plot, making historical events lively and easy to connect with. Through its creative music and powerful performances, the musical encourages people to fight for their dreams and value their own influence on the world.
Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen pays close attention to the inner world of teenagers. It centers on a student who struggles with social anxiety and finds himself trapped in a lie. By showing the troubles and growth of young people, it reminds the audience to care about teenagers’ mental health and learn to face themselves honestly. Its touching songs and realistic themes have won wide recognition among young viewers.
Le Rouge et le Noir
As a famous French musical, Le Rouge et le Noir is adapted from Stendhal’s classical novel of the same title. It tells the life story of Julien Sorel, a young man born into a poor family who fights to achieve his ambition in a society full of class differences. Through his pursuit of love and success, the musical reflects the youth’s desire for self-value and fairness. Its beautiful melodies and deep themes have attracted large numbers of musical lovers around the world.

Luke Woodmender struggled with reading and writing from kindergarten through the start of fifth grade. Today, however, he is a high school graduate preparing to attend Drexel University. Luke and his mother, Jenn, both credit the Agora Cyber Charter School for this remarkable change, saying it helped him enjoy learning, develop a love for reading, and set him on a path to future success.
“In public school, I had good teachers, but I didn’t like being separated from other students in a special class,” Luke explained. Ready for a change, he registered at Agora a week into fifth grade. His eight years there completely transformed his educational experience. “It opened a whole new world of learning and made Luke want to learn,” said his mother.
Luke thrived in Agora’s flexible online environment. Teachers were easily reachable through email and private chats, offering consistent support. He could rewatch class recordings when needed, and he found the online textbooks clear and helpful for review. A key factor in his growth was the strong support from staff like family coach Ashley Von Grossen, who provided quick and reliable help, acting as a vital safety net.
This supportive structure led to visible results. Luke’s grades improved significantly, and he was able to explore his interests through various courses, including computer programming and cooking. These courses perfectly matched his potential career interests in video game design and art.
His success at Agora cleared the way for college acceptance. While considering several universities, Luke chose Drexel because it felt like the right fit. He plans to major in game design and is excited about future opportunities like a possible cooperative education program in Singapore. As for his career, Luke will let his Drexel experience guide him. “I need this stepping stone before deciding what I want to do,” he said.
24. Why did Luke decide to attend Agora Cyber Charter School?
A. He wanted to try online learning as a child.
B. His teachers in public school were not patient.
C. His mother advised him to choose a new school.
D. He disliked the class separation system in public school.
25. What can we infer from Luke’s experience at Agora?
A. He received reliable support. B. He met difficulty at the start.
C. He contacted teachers mainly by email. D. He was separated from other students.
26. What is the “stepping stone” for Luke in the last paragraph?
A. His success at Agora. B. His major in game design.
C. His education program in Singapore. D. His experience in Drexel.
27. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To promote game design programs.
B. To tell the education story of a boy.
C. To criticize traditional public schools.
D. To introduce the advantages of online learning.

Each year, more than 1.2 billion smartphones are produced globally. The production of electronic devices (设备) uses a lot of energy and takes valuable natural resources. Meanwhile, devices are aging faster than ever — users replace their still-functional phones on average every 2 to 3 years. Although the most sustainable (可持续的) solution would be to change people’s behavior and consider more carefully whether their new model truly needs replacing, this is easier said than done.
Creativity often begins not with something new, but with a new way of thinking about the old. According to a research team, old smartphones can be successfully repurposed into tiny data centers, which have a wide range of applications. For example, they could be used in city environments like bus stops to track the number of passengers in real time, while guarding personal information. This would provide valuable decision-making guidance for city officials to improve public transportation networks.
In another project, the researchers took out the phones’ batteries and replaced them with outside power sources. Then, they put four phones together, added 3D-printed covers and holders, and made a working model. The model was then tested underwater, where it surveilled sea life. Normally, these kinds of tasks require a swimmer to record video and bring it to the surface for researchers to review. But with the model, the whole process was done underwater without human help.
Different devices have different hardware (硬件) abilities and setups, which makes it hard to reuse electronic waste widely. To solve this, software systems that can work with different devices are needed, no matter their power or resources. These systems need to give each device the right amount of work based on its abilities so that no device slows down the process.
The team’s results show that outdated technology doesn’t have to end up as waste. With fresh and wonderful ideas, these devices can contribute to the development of more environmentally friendly digital solutions. “Sustainability is not just about protecting the future — it’s about reimagining the present, where yesterday’s devices become tomorrow’s opportunities,” said Ulrich Norbisrath, an Associate Professor of Software Engineering.
28. What is the major problem about electronic devices?
A. Resource waste. B. Repair difficulties.
C. Slow performance. D. Costly advertising.
29. What is a possible application of old smartphones?
A. Checking passenger behavior at stops.
B. Supporting safe crowd data collection.
C. Showing traffic conditions to passengers.
D. Surveying passengers’ service satisfaction.
30. What does the underlined word “surveilled” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Easily saved. B. Clearly guided.
C. Carefully avoided. D. Closely observed.
31. What is important to reuse electronic waste widely?
A. Error-fixing ability. B. Large storage space.
C. Effective energy use. D. Adaptive workload.

A new air-powered robot can practically walk right off the 3D printer. One day, robots like this could work underwater or in dangerous environments, its creators say.
Yichen Zhai, a mechanical engineer at the University of California, and his colleagues gave their robot six flexible legs, like an insect. Air from a canister (小罐) flows through tiny tubes and chambers (腔) in the robot’s body to power it. As the pressure in each of these chambers changes, it opens and closes different tubes. That moves air into different sets of chambers, and the process starts again. This cycle moves the robot’s legs to head forward.
The robot’s design is quite interesting. Typically, making a robot involves designing different parts from different components and combining them, but this one’s body is a single piece made of just one material. The robot may be soft, but its shape actually makes it quite stable (平稳). Having six legs helps it stay upright on rough and uneven ground. Whenever it takes a step, three of its legs move at once while the other three stay on the ground, which helps it not fall over easily. And because the design doesn’t contain any electronics, it’s also water-resistant.
The six-legged walker could work in areas where electronics might be a fire risk, such as in mines. But the new soft robot isn’t quite ready for these conditions yet. The robot has to be able to move faster first, which will let it move farther on a single air canister. As of now, the insect-like robot moves along at a leisurely pace of 4 centimeters per second. That’s a little faster than a snail, but slower than a turtle.
The researchers are currently building a faster version of their machine, while hoping to find a way for the robot to avoid blocks. “Until the robot gets these upgrades, it won’t be doing heavy-duty work. But now, people can still enjoy interacting with it. The robot is like a toy and it can be cheaply and easily 3D printed. If they love it, people can make it. That’s enough,” Zhai says.
32. Why are tubes and chambers applied in the robot?
A. To store air for energy supply. B. To control movement with air.
C. To strengthen its leg structure. D. To spare pressure for extra tasks.
33. What is special about the new robot?
A. It can survive hard falls and knocks. B. It has six legs for improved mobility.
C. It takes shape from a single material. D. It employs 3D printing to reduce costs.
34. What can we infer about the new robot from paragraph 4?
A. It operates well in fire-risk areas. B. It moves faster on a single air canister.
C. It uses electronics to avoid overheating. D. It shows a notable limitation in speed.
35. What do Zhai’s words mainly imply about the new robot?
A. It plays a satisfying role at present. B. It hardly makes sense in reality.
C. It leaves little room for advancement. D. It goes beyond original expectations.

Cheerful and smart, Sara was a typical high school student. When she was free, she took great pleasure in music and performing magic — a hobby that brought her popularity among her peers.
One morning, as she walked into the classroom, she caught an excited murmur. A crowd had gathered around Alice, her best friend, who was showing off her new wireless Bluetooth earphones with pride. The earphones were delicately designed and offered exceptional sound quality, leaving everyone in awe. Fascinated by the earphones, Sara made her way over to Alice, hoping to have a go. However, the class bell rang just then, cutting her off. Kids took their stuff and rushed to the lab for an experiment.
During the experiments, Crystal, their teacher, needed extra copies of the experiment guide and sent Sara to fetch them from the classroom. Back in the empty classroom, Sara spotted Alice’s earphones on the desk. After a brief pause, her strong desire to try them got the better of her. She picked up the earphones and was ready to dive into the tunes. Just then, Ms. Crystal’s voice came through the classroom PA system (广播系统), urging her to return immediately. In a hurry, Sara stuffed the earphones in her pocket and dashed back to the lab.
Immediately the experiment ended, students rushed to have lunch. After the lunch break, all the students got back to the classroom. Alice soon realized her earphones were gone and, in a fit of anger, ran to Ms.Crystal, tearfully accusing someone of stealing them.
Ms.Crystal calmed the chattering class and asked who had seen the earphones. Everything happened so quickly and unexpectedly. Sara, among the students, unconsciously reached for her pocket and felt the earphones.

【答案】28. A 29. B 30. D 31. D

【导语】文章讲述智能手机产量大、淘汰快造成严重资源浪费,研究将旧手机改造再利用,可用于城市客流统计、水下观测,需适配系统合理分配任务实现环保价值。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The production of electronic devices (设备) uses a lot of energy and takes valuable natural resources. Meanwhile, devices are aging faster than ever — users replace their still-functional phones on average every 2 to 3 years.(电子设备的生产消耗大量能源,耗费宝贵的自然资源。与此同时,设备更新换代比以往更快,用户平均每2至3年就更换仍能正常使用的手机。)”可知,电子设备存在的主要问题是资源浪费。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“According to a research team, old smartphones can be successfully repurposed into tiny data centers, which have a wide range of applications. For example, they could be used in city environments like bus stops to track the number of passengers in real time, while guarding personal information. This would provide valuable decision-making guidance for city officials to improve public transportation networks.(某研究团队表示,旧智能手机可被成功改造为微型数据中心,应用场景十分广泛。例如,它们可用于公交站台等城市场所,实时追踪乘客数量,同时保护个人信息。这将为城市管理者优化公共交通网络提供有价值的决策依据。)”可知,旧智能手机可应用于安全采集人群相关数据。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Normally, these kinds of tasks require a swimmer to record video and bring it to the surface for researchers to review. But with the model, the whole process was done underwater without human help.(通常这类任务需要潜水员下水录制视频,再带出水面供研究人员查看。但借助该装置,整个过程可在水下无人协助下完成。)” 可知,该装置在水下用来近距离观测海洋生物,所以猜测“The model was then tested underwater, where it surveilled sea life.(该模型随后在水下进行了测试,用于surveilled海洋生物。)”中surveilled意为“密切观察、监测”。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“These systems need to give each device the right amount of work based on its abilities so that no device slows down the process.(这些系统需要根据每台设备的性能分配合适的工作量,避免某一台设备拖慢整体运行进程。)”可知,大范围再利用电子垃圾的关键是具备适配性的任务分配机制。

【导语】科研人员研发出一款3D打印气动六足机器人,单材料一体成型、靠气流驱动且防水稳定,但速度较慢,暂不适合重载,可作简易趣味装置。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Air from a canister (小罐) flows through tiny tubes and chambers (腔) in the robot’s body to power it. As the pressure in each of these chambers changes, it opens and closes different tubes. That moves air into different sets of chambers, and the process starts again. This cycle moves the robot’s legs to head forward.(气罐里的空气流经机器人体内的细管道和气腔来为它提供动力。当每个气腔内的压力发生变化时,就会开合不同的管道。这会将空气送入另一组气腔,循环往复。这一循环带动机器人的腿部向前移动。)”可知,管道和气腔的作用是借助空气来控制机器人的运动。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Typically, making a robot involves designing different parts from different components and combining them, but this one’s body is a single piece made of just one material.(通常,制造机器人需要用不同零件设计并组装各个部件,但这款机器人的机身是由单一材料一体成型的整体构件。)”可知,这款新机器人的特别之处在于采用单一材料成型。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“As of now, the insect-like robot moves along at a leisurely pace of 4 centimeters per second. That’s a little faster than a snail, but slower than a turtle.(目前,这款仿生昆虫机器人以每秒4厘米的缓慢速度行进。它比蜗牛稍快,却比乌龟还要慢。)”可知,这款机器人目前在行进速度上存在明显短板和局限。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Until the robot gets these upgrades, it won’t be doing heavy-duty work. But now, people can still enjoy interacting with it. The robot is like a toy and it can be cheaply and easily 3D printed. If they love it, people can make it. That’s enough,(在完成升级之前,它还无法承担重型作业。但现在,人们依然可以和它互动玩乐。它就像玩具一样,能通过3D打印低成本轻松制作。只要人们喜欢、可以自制,这就足够了,)”可知,翟的话暗示这款机器人目前已经具备让人满意的使用价值。

Try to attend some of the less popular events. These can offer unique experiences, and may lead you to your new favorite activity.

Gathering up her courage, she stepped forward, her voice a bit shaky but clear. “ Ms. Crystal, I... I took Alice’s earphones but I didn’t mean to steal them”.
Hearing Sara’s words, the class was shocked. Some students began to murmur about how disappointed they were, casting judgmental glances at Sara. However, Ms.Crystal swiftly regained control of the situation. “Sara has shown great courage by admitting her mistake”, she said firmly. Alice’s anger gradually melted as she saw the sincerity in Sara’s eyes. On that day, Sara learned a valuable lesson about trust and communication, strengthening her friendship with Alice and winning praise of her teacher and classmates.
