Smartphone apps make traveling easier than ever. Which one is the most helpful among so many new travel-related apps? Here are three apps that will make your next trip a little easier.
Talk to me
This is a great tool for anyone visiting a foreign country—it works like a translator in your pocket! When you speak into the phone in English, it translates what you are saying into the language you choose. You can choose different languages, such as English, Chinese, French.. This app is useful for tourists and businessmen. It’s also great for language learners.
Tripit
Are you always looking for your travel information when it’s time to check in for your flight? Many Canadian kids woke up to the smell of wildfire smoke in 2023. Some children are wondering: Is it dangerous? How can I protect myself?
CBC Kids News talked to two children’s lung experts, Tom Kovesi and Dan Hughes, to find out how kids could stay safe.
Is wildfire smoke dangerous?
For most people, the effect of wildfire smoke is only short-term. Effects can include irritation (刺激) to the eyes, nose and throat, causing coughing and shortness of breath. They will get worse the more time you spend outdoors, especially if you’re active outside — doing sports and other exercise.
I spend my summer around a campfire. ▲
“The difference between campfire smoke and wildfire smoke is that wildfire smoke is harder to avoid,” Hughes said. “When you’re camping, you usually don’t stay in front of a fire for too long,” he said. “And if it’s really smoky, you’d probably sit upwind from the smoke or take a break.” Wildfire smoke, on the other hand, is everywhere. Therefore, the effects can be more long-term and dangerous.
The key to staying safe? Stay inside.
Both Kovesi and Hughes agree that the best thing for kids to do is stay inside when wildfire smoke is in the air.
“It’s especially important for kids who are too active to stop those activities. This is not the time to go jogging, play soccer and other sports,” Hughes said. “Those activities make you breathe harder and deeper, which gives you greater exposure (暴露) to the smoke and the particles (微粒) the smoke carries.”
Other steps you can take.
It’s best to close your windows and doors when you’re inside. You can also use an air conditioner (空调).
6. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To give an example. B. To lead into the topic. C. To describe a story. D. To ask a question.
7. Wildfire smoke can make people ________.
A. die young B. be very active C. stop coughing D. feel breathless
8. Which sentence should be put into the ▲?
A. Where is campfire smoke from? B. How is it different from wildfire smoke?
C. What causes wildfire smoke? D. How can we stop them?
9. Which of the following can we do to stay safe from wildfire smoke?
① ② ③ ④
A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ①②③ D. ③④
10. In which section of a magazine could you read the text?
A. Culture. B. Technology. C. Health. D. Travel.

I’m Tom. When I was 15, I said to my class that I was going to write my own books. All the students nearly fell out of their chairs, laughing at me. “Don’t be silly. Only geniuses (天才) can become writers. And you are getting a D this term,” they said. I was deeply hurt and I couldn’t help crying. That night I wrote a short, sad poem about my broken dream and mailed it to the Weekly Newspaper.
To my surprise, they published it, and sent me two dollars. I was a paid writer! I showed it to my classmates. They laughed again. “Just luck,” they said. However, I had tasted the joy of success because my first poem was published.
By the time I finished high school, I had collected all my published works together. But I never talked about my writing dream to my classmates again. I just kept my dream to myself and kept writing.
Later, I wrote a book about how I understood and felt about my life. It took me nine months to finish it. I chose a publisher and mailed my book.
A month later, I received a letter, with an invitation for publishing the book. It came out in 15 languages and became a bestseller. People often ask what college I studied in and what degrees I have got. The answer is none. I just write. I’m not a genius and I’m not talented. I just write. To all those who dream of being a writer, I should say, “Yes, you can be writers. Always keep writing!”
11. What was the writer’s dream when he was 15 years old?
A. To write his own books. B. To become a publisher.
C. To make much money. D. To translate books into Chinese.
12. When the writer told his classmates his dream, what did they do?
A. They said nothing. B. They laughed at him.
C. They encouraged him. D. They offered to help him.
13. What does the underlined word “bestseller” mean?
A. 滞销品 B. 绝版书 C. 盗版书 D. 畅销书
14. What do we know about the writer from the passage?
A. He gave up his writing dream. B. His book was not very popular.
C. He became a successful writer. D. He kept sharing his dream with others.
15. What can we infer about the writer from the passage?
A. He once got a D in a school term. B. He learned writing in a top college.
C. He gave up writing after being laughed at. D. He only wrote poems in his life.
D
China’s high-speed rail technology keeps reaching new heights. On September 18th, 2025, a new kind of train made its first appearance in Qingdao, China. It is China’s first fully self-developed Smart Regional Train (智能市域列车). This train is a big step forward for China’s train technology.
This smart train uses many technologies. Although its top speed can reach 200 kilometers per hour, these technologies make the train safer. Besides, they make the inside of the train quieter and more comfortable for passengers. They also help the train save more energy. What’s more, these set new examples for regional trains.
What makes the train special is its cool new technologies. All technologies are made by Chinese engineers. For example, it can run without a driver—no people need to control it when it’s moving. It also has the ability of self-checking. It can find its own problems by itself.
This Smart Regional Train will work on the Beijing-Xiong’an High-speed Line. This important railway connects Xiong’an New Area and Beijing Daxing International Airport. It is about 86 kilometers long. When it starts running, it will take only 30 minutes to go from Xiong’an to the airport. This will bring great convenience to people living in Xiong’an and those near Beijing Daxing International Airport. It will also make the travel network in the Beijing-Hebei region more convenient.
The birth of this smart train shows China’s strong ability in making high-tech train parts. It is another important success in China’s train industry.
16. Where did the Smart Regional Train first appear?
A. Qingdao. B. Beijing. C. Xiong’an. D. Hebei.
17. How fast can the new train run?
A. 100 kilometers per hour. B. 200 kilometers per hour.
C. 300 kilometers per hour. D. 400 kilometers per hour.
18. Which of the following is NOT a special feature (特征) of the Smart Regional Train?
A. It is safe and comfortable. B. It can run without a driver.
C. It can find its own problems by itself. D. All technologies are made by Chinese engineers.
19. What can we infer (推断) from Paragraph 4?
A. The train has been already in use. B. The train will increase the cost of people’s trips.
C. The train will bring people in different areas closer. D. It will take 50 minutes to go from Xiong’an to the airport.
20. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To guide people how to take this new train.
B. To show the achievements of China’s high-speed rail.
C. To introduce the history of China’s train development.
D. To ask people to take the train.

Robot Sharks Are Here to Help
Two sharks were swimming fast in West Lake. Their bodies were dark and shiny, and their fins (鱼鳍) cut through the water like knives. Wait a second—sharks in a lake? How could that be? They are not real sharks, but robots! Their job is to help visitors find lost phones and other things in the water. Let’s hear what their engineer (工程师) has to say.
Why sharks?
Sharks are great swimmers. About two thirds of their bodies can bend (弯曲) and twist (扭动). So they can swim fast and turn quickly. When a robot shark swims in a pond, goldfish often follow it. Because they think it’s their new friend!
Can it swim like a real fish?
Not quite yet. Real fish are faster because of their soft muscles (肌肉). The robot shark’s body is harder. But scientists are still improving it. Maybe one day, it’ll swim just like the real fish!
46. What is the job of the robot sharks in West Lake?

A. Culture. B. Technology. C. Health. D. Travel.
【答案】6. B 7. D 8. B 9. B 10. C
根据“Effects can include irritation (刺激) to the eyes, nose and throat, causing coughing and shortness of breath.”可知,野火烟雾会使人感到呼吸困难。
【8题详解】

_____________________________________________________
47. Why do goldfish follow the robot shark?

48. How long can the robot shark swim with its battery?
