Unit5 Nature's Temper
第一篇
There is a saying that “Earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do.” It seems sadly true. Is there a way to build earthquake-proof buildings? Engineers have some life-saving 1 (idea).
“Lift (抬起)” the house up
To stop earthquake waves 2 going through the building, one way is to “lift” the building above the ground, according to the company BigRenz in the US. The building can be built on top of pads (垫状物), which are 3 (usual) made of steel (钢) and rubber. During earthquakes, only the pads move and the building stays nearly 4 same. This can reduce the 5 (earthquake) intensity (强度) by 13 to 15 percent.
Right materials
Earthquake-proof materials must be easy to change their shapes without 6 (break). Some of these materials include steel, wood and bamboo. In Japan, most traditional houses are built with wood 7 it’s safer when an earthquake comes.
A strong shape
Triangles (三角形) are very strong shapes. When a force comes to one of the sides of the triangles, it will be weaker and less 8 (harm). During the earthquake, triangles can hold the building together when it 9 (shake). Many earthquake-proof buildings use this shape in their design, both inside and outside.
Engineers are now trying their 10 (good) to keep buildings standing stronger, and we highly expect their creative designs.

A very terrible fire happened in a Hong Kong neighborhood. It 1 (take) many lives. A brave fireman also lost his life who was trying to save others at that time.
The bamboo scaffolding around the buildings acted as fuel (燃料). It helped the fire grow fast. The buildings had a special arrangement (布局). This arrangement created a powerful “chimney effect”. This effect made the fire move upward 2 (quick) and become extremely hot. It 3 (be) like air flowing through a real chimney. The fire spread faster and spread to more buildings. Strong winds made it the 4 (bad) situation.
5 (fireman) faced great challenges during the rescue. The chimney effect made the fire too hot 6 get close to the building. Burning pieces kept 7 (fall) from above and thick black smoke made it hard to see and breathe. 8 the situation was very dangerous, these brave workers did their best to evacuate people caught inside. Thankfully, no more people lost their lives later.
Our thoughts are truly with all the families. These families lost their loved ones. We also remember the heroic firefighter and hope those injured people will become better soon. This terrible event greatly reminds 9 (we) how important safety is, because fire dangers are everywhere. Let's all learn from this and be more 10 (care). We pray many tragedies won't happen again and that everyone may live safely.

Last summer vacation, I took part in a local swimming club. The club needed someone to help kids learn to swim to stay 1 (health). In the past, I was very shy and quiet. But that summer, I 2 (make) a big decision to challenge myself.
At first, the kids were noisy and did not listen to me. I almost wanted to give up, but I didn’t give up. I knew I should be thankful 3 this chance. I told myself, “It is important for me 4 (keep) trying.”
My friend Lily also came to help. “How about 5 (have) some fun water 6 (game)?” she said. I thought it was a good idea. Soon, the kids enjoyed 7 (them) in the water. The games helped them calm down. After that, my teaching became much 8 (easy) than before.
Then I asked them to dive deeper to pick up rings (潜水环). A little boy named Tom tried his best and got the biggest ring of all. Seeing his smile, I felt full of 9 (happy).
Luckily, the five-day camp ended very well. And I didn’t know how much I loved teaching children until they hugged me. 10 (help) these children is really meaningful. I’m sure I will remember the five-day camp in my future life.
